Numerous illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent spectroscopy book.......2007-05-17
There was really no need for my short review to convince anyone interested or even marginally active in the field of molecular spectroscopy that the SYMMETRY AND SPECTROSCOPY-Introduction to Vibrational and Electronic Spectroscopy by D.C. Harris and M.D. Bertolucci is an excellent presentation of the underlying physical principles, the laws and parameters involved in the measurement and, above all and in accordance with the title, the involvement of symmetry on the appearance of virbrational and electronic spectra.
Recommended, in my opinion, to both students and tutors, and to those interested in the application or the theoretical part of the aforementioned spectroscopic fields.
loved this book .......2007-03-29
I used this book to supplement my molecular spec. course many years ago. As others have noted - very friendly in its tone.
For other classic books in this area look at:
1. Introduction to Molecular Spectroscopy by Gordon M. Barrow, McGraw-Hill, 1962 (You should avoid his more commonly found book with a similar title: The Structure of Molecules: An Introduction to Molecular Spectroscopy, published by W. A. Benjamin, 1964. This book is too basic.)
2. Introduction to Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy by William A. Guillory, Allyn and Bacon, 1977
Check out my other reviews for other chem books.
Great book........2007-03-17
Got this book to study for a Spectroscopy of Optical Materials course and it was wonderfull. Easy to follow and complete.
Great book for a difficult subject.......2006-02-26
Harris and Bertolucci do a great job of covering every detail needed to know to understand the subject. Good guide to confusing subject.
Great book.......2006-02-24
This was an optional text in my grad-level chemical engineering spectroscopy class, and I absolutely love it. The book is readable, the examples clear and concise, and the problems throughout the text are very instructive. A great book for those new to spectroscopy.

Book Description
The first comprehensive examination of the cinematographer's art, Making Pictures presents incisive analyses of 100 visually stunning films-radical classics like Battleship Potemkin (1925), Jules et Jim (1965), and The Elephant Man (1980)-along with a complete technical and creative history of the cameraperson's unique craft. Illustrated with 500 images in both color and black-and-white, it features a wealth of location shots and expository stills. Contributions by such seminal figures as director Bernardo Bertolucci, actor Marcello Mastroianni, and Ingmar Bergman's long-term collaborator, cinematographer Sven Nykvist, make this a unique study.
This remarkable book examines 100 European films that represent the art of cinematography at its best; they were specially chosen by a panel of cinematographers to represent either technical or creative mastery by the cameraman. This book will be an essential reference for all film students and cinematographers.

An Inspirational Book.......2006-04-17
This is such an inspirational book, and a must for any aspiring cinematographer and those with a real interest in cinema. It covers the history of Europeon cinematography and is wonderfully illustrated. At the beginning there are pieces from Jack Cardiff, Sven Nykvist, Guiseppe Rotunno and Bernardo Bertolucci.
One of the things I liked best about this book are the pieces on the 100 different top rated films. For each film we are given the story and this is told with the emphasis on how the film was shot, how light was used and how effects were created. It outlines each cinematographers approach. It made me want to watch all 100 of these films.
At the end there is a large section on 'Tools of the Trade' describing many different camera systems, lighting and filters and the history of many great camera companies, among others Panavision, Auri, Kodak, Fuji and Aaton. This is a truly fascinating book. Christie Barraclough
A "must have" book.......2006-01-26
Sometimes, seeing a movie is not enough for photographers. Sometimes it is better to freeze everything around us, and take the time one wants to admire a beautiful composition, or lighting or an unforgettable face. This is what I found in this book. As if it wasn't enough, it has the most interesting information about the cinematographers who achieved all this in the most sublime stage of cinematic art. I encourage all of you, interested or practicing photography to buy this book, You will never regret it.
A must buy for Cinematographers!.......2005-05-28
An extraordinary book on many levels. It examines in surprisingly great detail the cinematography on over 100 films by Bergman, Fellini, Kubrick, Lean to name a just a few. The gorgeous accompanying stills from the films and also of the DP's setting up shots sealed the deal for me.

Two cups of Communism and a tablespoon of Freud..........2004-07-12
"The more important the shadows are, the more value and meaning the film will have." --B.B.
As with other installments of the Conversations With Filmmakers series of books, the themes that the director holds dear pop up in several of the interviews. The two persistant subjects in this book are those "great" ideas of the 20th century: Communism and Freudianism. Bertolucci wouldn't be Bertolucci without these two influences.
These interviews span over 30 years of Bertolucci's career and include discussions of some of his movies that aren't currently released on DVD, like The Conformist and La Luna. The most current film discussed is 1998's Besieged.
My favorite chapter was the conversation between Bertolucci and fellow filmmaker Wim Wenders from 1981 in which they essentially predict the coming popularity of reality TV.
While it would probably be best to actually view the films first, this book would serve as a good introduction to Bertolucci. The book will be most valuable, however, to those familiar with his work already and those who want to know what makes Bertolucci tick.

JESUS WHAT A DISASTER; SO BADLY WRITTEN, IT HURTS.......2002-10-16
This thing is abyssmal, just terrible and amatuerishly written. Nuff said.
Beautiful, absolutely touching.......2001-11-13
This movie is unbelievably bello, carino, it is beautiful. The story is touching, the landscape is like candy, and the ending is beautiful as well. Lucy is a girl almost a woman, who is searching for her the answer to an intriguing passage she found in her mother's diary. She is also searching for the boy, now almost a man also, who she kissed the last time she visited the breathtaking Italian villa four years past. This movie will leave you feeling like you have just witnessed a moment of beauty so strong and so intense that you will feel changed.
Not as good as the movie.......2001-06-05
This book was a spin-off from the movie, Stealing Beauty, and like most books based on movies, the book fails to capture the mood and romance of the original. Description of the Italian countryside in this books pales in comparision to Bertoluccis' masterful use of the camera. The magnetic appeal of the film is lost in second-rate descriptive attempts and clumsy use of words. Regretfully, the author gets caught up in retelling the movie's blocking and action scene by scene and forgets to focus on the characters and the story being told.
However, if you enjoyed following Lucy's coming of age story and want to relive the moments, you could like this book.
For people who loved the film, Stealing Beauty may be worth a look. For everyone else, I'm sure you could easily find a more thoughtful, worthwhile and enjoyable book to read.
