Book Description

This is an introductory text for materials science and engineering. This book takes an integrated approach to materials, with an organization focusing on properties rather than classes of materials. Schaffer's Science and Design of Engineering Materials, 2nd Edition will now be complemented by an e-Text. An e-Text is pdf. files of the mian text on CD-ROM. The entire contents of the Materials in Focus CD-ROM, which has previously complemented the book are also on the e-Text. Because the text and the Materials in Focus CD-ROM are now together on one CD-ROM, students are able to move back and forth between the two seamlessly. Instructors will benefit from the e-Text because they will better be able to tie the text material to lectures and homework problems.

Vague, Verbose, Quasi-scientific.......2007-05-16

The explanations in this text are not carefully worded. If you're actually trying to learn concepts and understand the material in any deep fashion this text will confound you and leave you with a shallow overview with some "tools". They throw up some formulas and wave their hands around a lot. When it comes to precise explanations and scientific concepts, this book is lacking. It gives you the vocabulary necessary to recognize the topics and ideas, but not the depth of knowledge necessary to actually UNDERSTAND and assimilate the science on any deep level.

Overall, it's a sloppy text that does a sloppy job of introducing this topic.

Verbose and poorly written.......2005-01-14

We used this book for our materials science class, and while it contained a lot of information the information was very poorly presented. The text would often refer to figures and tables nowhere in the vincinity, and it was written in such a way that it was extremely difficult to follow. They didn't emphasize the important parts, so it was unclear what we should've known.

Most Complete Introductory Materials Science Text Available.......2004-03-19

This textbook is, by far, the most thorough text available for introductory materials science students. I have used this text book both to assist my students in Intro to Materials Science and to review for my PhD examination.

The text examines each topic in its fundamental scientific meaning; then relates it to individual materials. This technique is accomplished in a much more complete manner than Callister's text and is far superior to the material classification approach that Askeland takes.

I highly recommend this text for anyone wanting to review core materials science topics or studying for an introductory materials science course.

GREAT BOOK.......2003-10-01

A wonderful overview of introductory materials science. It is every bit as good as Callister's textbook, and contains lots of detail

GREAT TEXT.......2003-09-14

This text is a gem, but not as widely-used for introductory materials science classes as similar books (cf. Callister). However, this book is clear, offering lucid explanations and pedagogically sound diagrams to support the explanations. I only wish this book would catch on at more universities...

Focus on Crystals is quite simply the best crystal book I have read. Covering a wide range of crystal healing techniques and therapies in great depth, easily understandable to both the novice and advanced practicioner alike. Edmunds depth of information is expansive and unlike many such volumes this book contains a very practical aproach to all aspects of crystal healing.
