From beloved award-winning author Max Lucado comes Traveling Light, refreshing words wrapped around the biblical passages of the 23rd Psalm to reenergize weary spiritual travelers. In his inimitable, pastoral voice that both soothes and exhorts, Lucado gently unpacks the verses of the psalm while helping readers lay down the burdens of doubt, anxiety, perfectionism, and fear. "You can't enjoy a journey carrying so much stuff," Lucado writes. "Why don't you just drop all that luggage?" Lucado mixes personal transparency with his trademark humor, offering uncomplicated counsel. Change your focus. Make time for rest. Know you are not alone. Be humble. Trust God. It's only when we set down our "luggage" and let God carry it for us, says Lucado, that we are free to share grace, offer comfort, and help lift the load of others. As you read Lucado's words and work through the study questions, you'll find your own load feeling a little lighter. --Cindy Crosby

Book Description

Weary travelers. You've seen them-everything they own crammed into their luggage. Staggering through terminals and hotel lobbies with overstuffed suitcases, trunks, duffels, and backpacks. Backs ache. Feet burn. Eyelids droop. We've all seen people like that. At times, we are people like that-if not with our physical luggage, then at least with our spiritual load. We all lug loads we were never intended to carry. Fear. Worry. Discontent. No wonder we get so weary. We're worn out from carrying that excess baggage. Wouldn't it be nice to lose some of those bags? That's the invitation of Max Lucado. With the Twenty-third Psalm as our guide, let's release some of the burdens we were never intended to bear.

Amazon recommended this book to me based on my viewing of another book recommended by Amazon. (Will the circle be unbroken?) Once again, based on a glance at the synopsis and posted reviews, I'll offer the opinion that this book is probably not worth your time unless your mind needs some gussying up with threadbare platitudes.

Traveling Light: Releasing the Burdens You Were Never Intended to BearRate this a "10". Got a backpack full of worries, burdens, sruggles, heartaches, etc., you are lugging around? Read this book and learn how to lighten the backpack and leave it at home. This is one of his best books on learning how to live in this world and enjoy every second of living not only with yourself but with GOD. Makes a great gift. Again, Max should be considered the "Nora Roberts" of the religious genre.

This treatment of the classic Psalm 23 is wonderful. The reader would come away from this book truly encouraged to travel light, indeed. This is a great work. I highly recommend it. We were never designed to shoulder our burdens. We must turn them over to God. This work is to that end.

I enjoy all Lucado's books - this one definitely made you look at things in a different point of view. Lucado is witty and makes your spiritual walk a bit more fun & personal, not so rules oriented and boring. I'd recommend all his books.

This is a beautifully written book that is an easy, inspiring read. I read a chapter every evening before bed and I slept easier, as my burdens were definitely lifted, as the title suggests. It is a MUST READ if you are suffering from some emotional dispair. We all need to "Travel Light."

Rising divorce rates inspired Dr. James Dobson, founder and president of Focus on the Family, and his wife, Shirley, to author a devotional for couples in an attempt to strengthen the marriages of younger generations. Night Light: A Devotional for Couples contains six months of daily devotions stemming from the Dobsons' 40 years of marriage experience. Beginning on Sunday, an inspirational story addresses a relevant theme, such as communication, money, forgiveness, or conflict resolution, which is expounded upon throughout the devotions for that week. Scripture, probing questions, and short anecdotes encourage intimacy between the couple in an attempt to ward off stagnation and habitual laziness in spiritual growth. While the questions and suggestions will affect every couple differently, this devotional stimulates conversation about weighty issues of the heart and turns the head toward what matters for eternity. Knowing that most couples are too exhausted by the end of the day to analyze every facet of their marriage, however, the Dobson's have crafted the devotions to be completed within 10 minutes. One would expect this to be most helpful for newlyweds, but it is a revitalizing aide for those who have had poor communication throughout their marriage or are looking to refocus their marriage on Christ. Night Light is a wonderful way to set your mind on the Lord before turning out the light and for drawing closer to your mate in the process. --Jill Heatherly

Book Description

The challenge of sustaining an intimate, faith-based marriage in today's "hurry-up" society has never been greater. Now Night Light, the inspired, first-ever couples' devotional from Focus on the Family ministry founder Dr. James Dobson and his wife, Shirley, brings spouses together each evening, helping them stay connected with each other and their Lord. Stories that strike an emotional chord, Scripture readings, provocative questions, prayers, and personal commentary from the Dobsons encourage men and women in their homes and spiritual lives. More than just another devotional, Night Light is a practical, uplifting guide for every couple who longs to experience the joyous, intimate, "three-person" marriage covenant God intended.

5 out of 5 stars A true blessing.......2007-06-05

My husband and I had been married for 23 years and were Christians. We were feeling like we had grown apart and needed something to bring us back together. This book did it for us! Each night we read our pages together and answered, truthfully, the questions at the end. It opened a whole new chapter in our marriage and we have recommended it to all our friends. Matter of fact, we are going to read it again!

5 out of 5 stars Great book, great stories, great idea.......2007-05-11

Devotional reading at night in our home used to be tiring. As a belated wedding gift we began to read this book together in place of some other books. We both enjoy the daily messages and the stories at the beginning of each week. Highly recommend this book. Each reading is 1-4 pages max. Helps in situations were your spouse tends to fall asleep.

My husband and I have read this devotional and LOVED it!! The questions after the stories spark deep conversations and it's a great way to spend some one on one time with your spouse after a long day.

4 out of 5 stars Jessica's review of the above book:.......2006-08-29

This devotional for couples has been a delightful read thus far. Please note, however, that my husband and I have only read the Sun., Mon. and Tue. devotional. Every day you and your spouse read a 1-2 page story or article and one bible verse relating to the same. The reading is followed by questions that you both answer to help you get to know each other's thoughts on certain topics that come up in marriage. I think the questions are an important part of this devotional, as they really create the opportunity to discuss topics you may not have brought up otherwise. After you read the story and answer the questions there is a short prayer that you and your spouse pray together. This is an easy way to introduce praying together into your relationship. This devotional has the potential to really solidify the bond you already have or create one, if needed. Please note that if you are looking more for a devotional that will allow you to complete a bible study together you may want to look for something else. This book definitely prods you to include God in your relationship, but it doesn't specifically focus on "bible study". Also, you may note that each daily devotional will only take about 15 min., which is good if you are tried for time. Please remember this review is only based on three days of reading; I have no idea if the book is going to do a complete turn around. Enjoy and may God bless your marriage!

A challenging look at today's evangelical church in the light of the early Christians.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Some wonderful insights to early Christianity.......2007-04-08

This book, which was brilliantly written by one Mr. Becot, was good at showing some of the flaws and differences that modern evangelicalism holds with early Christianity. It demonstrated how there are many doctrinal and sacramental practices that have been omitted or changed in modern evangelicalism that where once practiced by the first Christians. One example would be the ordinance of baptism, which Mr. Bercot shows was an essential doctrine of first and second century Christianity. And (me being LDS and believing in the apostasy of the true church of Christ) I particularly agreed with Mr. Bercot's view that the church was corrupted by the time of the time of Constantine. So this was a good book and a very interesting read on early Christianity compared to modern evangelicalism.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps one of the most important books you'll ever read.......2007-01-31

I consider this book seminal in both its topics and scope. If you are a Christian, (or even if you have no interest in church history,) "Will The Real Heretics Please Stand Up" will challenge you as perhaps no other can or will.

The early Christian writers, (sometimes referred to as "fathers,") left a body of writings that have been preserved to this day, (enough to fill a 10 volume set.) Though not inspired by God, (as were the Apostles who wrote the New Testament,) their writings do reflect what the early church believed and practiced for almost 300 years, (until the church was severely compromised by an unholy union with the Roman state under Emperor Constantine's overtures.)

When personally challenged to read these writings, David Bercot initially rejected them; discovering that their beliefs were so antiquated and out of step with contemporary beliefs. Yet, as he begin reading them again, he came to the overwhelming conclusion that what the church believes today is *drastically* different from the beliefs of the early Christians.

* Do you believe that a Christian is saved by faith alone, apart from good works? Then you believe a doctrine rejected as heresy by the early church.
* Do you believe a Christian has no choice in his salvation, but is saved solely by the choice of God? The early church understood every person has a free will and is held accountable by God according to the choices made from it. (The pagans of the day were predestinationalists, believing all of life was controlled by "fate.")
* Do believe a Christian can fight and kill in a war, and still go to heaven? The early Christians knew that those who lived by the sword would be killed by the sword, and therefore strove to live meek and harmless lives; preferring to suffer death at the hands of unbelievers rather than fight to save their lives, (like their Master did before them.)

Included in this book is a very simple and understandable description of exactly where and how the church came to disown these original teachings, and why it currently believes and practices something entirely different today. Bercot's style is remarkable in its persuasion and meekness; refraining from attacking or belittling those who take the opposing view. (However, his arguments are unanswerable, due to their unavoidable logic and evidentiary conclusions.)

* If you are a Calvinist, (or of that persuasion,) you will not like this book.
* If you are a modern Evangelical, and believe in "Once Saved, Always Saved," you will not like this book.
* If you are participant or supporter of any war or military action, you will be highly offended by this book.

In short, if you are a denier of the literal words and teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ, you are utterly out-of-fellowship with the Believers of the first and second centuries, for they strove to follow Jesus as literally and as earnestly as they could. (And you would be cast out of their churches as a first-class heretic.)

The church today simply does not believe what Jesus taught. The early church did, and we have their writings as evidence of what they believed and accomplished. Scripture decidedly foretells of an end-times apostasy, or "great falling away." When you compare the beliefs of the early church with what is believed and practiced today, you can clearly see that we are most decidedly in the very center of this prophecy. (And its only going to get worse.)

"Flee from the wrath to come!" It was preached 2,000 years ago, and it needs to be preached today. Only the target is YOU, dear Christian, and not some poor pagan unbeliever. (For it will be better for him in the day of judgment than for you, if you refuse to walk in *all* the commands of the Lord Jesus.)

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opening, a Real Wake Up Call.......2007-01-10

You may not care about what the churches the apostles started were like, or you may think that no one knows what they're like. This book will change your mind. This is a well-researched book, very accurate and fair to the early church writings. I've read everything the 2nd century church wrote as a result of the motivation provided by this book, and he spoke truly about what they said.

If you want to continue on the way you have been, don't read this book, because it will shake you up. Bercot is a lawyer, and he argues powerfully for his points in this book. I've listened to plenty of people try to answer his arguments, both when I worked with David (in 1992), and since, including a few months of talk shows on the radio in Sacramento, CA. These arguments are compelling and un-answerable.

On top of all this, the book is incredibly well-written. It is easy to understand and completely captivating. Every chapter ends with a carrot on a stick to drag you for or against your will into the next one. Don't start it at night, because you'll be late for work the next day. You will have to finish it.

This book, because it answers so many questions with straightforward answers and puts the whole world of the early church at your fingertips ought to be a top 10 Christian book of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Church history in a nutshell -- and what to do about it!.......2006-06-12

I was first introduced to Bercot by his masterly "Dictionary of Early Christian Beliefs" so I all the more readily took a look at this book. The result was that I couldn't put it down and started hunting for what else he had written on the subject.

Bercot knows what he is talking about from his years of study and research into the Patristic writings -- and this shows through in his writings as he weaves the basic principles of Christianity together and compares them with the pitiful evangelical church of today.

If you are one who is serious about your faith, please read this book. You can find out more about David Bercot on his publishing company's web site at scrollpublishing.com.

5 out of 5 stars Will the Real Heretics Please Stand Up.......2006-05-23

When I was first given the opportunity to read Will the Real Heretics Please Stand Up, I was reluctant, thinking it would be just another modern un-Biblical teaching. However, this one book, more than any other, outside the Bible itself, has made the most profound difference in my Christian life. It is simple to understand, and very compelling.

Although nearly every group and/or denomination today has some of the truths of the New Testament, they all fail to maintain a consistantly biblical view. In contrast, the church that was founded by the Apostles and their disciples maintained a consistant doctrinal purity for nearly three hundred years.

If you want to know what Christianity was like when it "turned the world upside down," and how she can once again take up that roll, this book will give you many of the answers.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Light.......2007-05-27

Gawain offers a lot of food for thought. There are many criticisms of her work and this type of thinking. I think if a reader goes into this work with an open mind they can come out with something useful. It is fairly fast to read so there is little time investment compared to the potential reward.

5 out of 5 stars a book to keep by your bed.......2007-05-13

I find that over the last twenty years or so, I read this book over and over. Mine is literally falling apart. Some reviewers have said that this book is just New Age sentimentality, and I can see why some might say that, but in another way, it's a really tough book. It simply says, unequivocably, that you must be honest: with yourself and others. This is pretty radical really, and very difficult.

Here's another way that this book is the opposite of sentimental: Shakti Gawain does not paper over the fact that being honest with yourself and other people can sometimes appear to backfire, in the short run. She tells the reader straight out that relationships may fall apart as a result, or your life may appear to be falling apart when you put these principles into practice. But in the long run, she says, it's better for everybody.

Like another reviewer, I have trouble with Shakti Gawain's idea that "the world is our mirror." That is the idea that, if something bad happens to me, I must have unconsciously created it. One of her examples is indeed that of a rape victim. Surely the rapist himself bears a great deal of responsibility for such a heinous act. Also, what about children who are abused? Can they in any sense have "created" their own abuse?

Nevertheless, sometimes when I look at other people's lives, it is pretty clear to me the way in which they created their own problems, usually, as Gawain says, by not being honest with themselves or others. So perhaps this is more true of my life too than I realize. It is often difficult to see the ways in which we are messing up our own lives! But this book can help.

3 out of 5 stars Too Convenient.......2006-11-15

I liked this book when I was younger, but in rereading it at age 43, I find it hard to trust. Shakti is certainly a humble author who is still searching (rather than resting on her past "discoveries"), but some of her ideas seem to be nothing more than convenient personal inventions. For example, she suggests that anyone we are in conflict with is simply a manifestation of an internal conflict that we have externalized in order to resolve. I find this theory offensive in its tidy resolution of the question of suffering. Would she really tell rape victims or abused children that they had manifested their perpetrators to resolve an inner conflict?

I gave her 3 rather than 2 stars due to her deference to 12-step programs.

4 out of 5 stars A good handbook for those starting their deeper spiritual journey.......2006-01-21

One of the best introductions to Eastern thought, LIVING IN THE LIGHT is well written and easy to understand. Shakti explains our role as channels of energy. This energy is from God, and our job is to allow this energy to flow freely through us into the world for positive change. She demonstrates how problems can result from blocking this flow, and shows how dissolving blockages through meditation and other methods can heal and empower us. The book is divided into background theory and practical application. A good handbook for those starting their deeper spiritual journey.

2 out of 5 stars This isn't really new material........2005-12-12

First, I should preface this review by saying that I believe the edition I read was an earlier one, which may have not been thoroughly updated. That said, what I did read was, well... not too revolutionary. I have read a number of books in this vein and know what entails a good read. For me, that has to be something which really challenges me and not so much gives me answers, but new questions and avenues to explore. This book did not do this for me. Basically, Shakti explains her background. She is very self-congratulatory (I felt) as she explains that she lives her life by intuition, and has done all kinds of things people have felt were crazy, because she listened to her intuition.

I really feel that this book has one core truth to offer, and that is listen to your intuition, your immediate feelings, your first thoughts. Don't analyze. Just be.

But you don't need to read this book in order to get that insight. You just got it from reading my review of the book.

If you are interested in learning about the author herself, this book may be a good read as it explains quite a bit of her background and her spiritual growth. But it's overall a very general book, which offers no real answers other than "follow your intuition." And I feel that a book which purports to discuss "planetary transformation" ought to offer something more than that one insight.

Book Description

When it comes to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and depression, everything you believe is a lie.

Lights Out

With research gleaned from the National Institutes of Health, T.S. Wiley and Bent Formby deliver staggering findings: Americans really are sick from being tired. Diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and depression are rising in our population. We're literally dying for a good night's sleep.

Our lifestyle wasn't always this way. It began with the invention of the lightbulb.

When we don't get enough sleep in sync with seasonal light exposure, we fundamentally alter a balance of nature that has been programmed into our physiology since Day One. This delicate biological rhythm rules the hormones and neurotransmitters that determine appetite, fertility, and mental and physical health. When we rely on artificial light to extend our day until 11 PM, midnight, and beyond, we fool our bodies into living in a perpetual state of summer. Anticipating the scarce food supply and forced inactivity of winter, our bodies begin storing fat and slowing metabolism to sustain us through the months of hibernation and hunger that never arrive.

Our own survival instinct, honed over millennia, is now killing us.

Wiley and Formby also reveal:

  • That studies from our own government research prove the role of sleeplessness in diabetes, heart disease, cancer, infertility, mental illness, and premature aging;
  • Why the carbohydrate-rich diets recommended by many health professionals are not only ridiculously ineffective but deadly;
  • Why the lifesaving information that can turn things around is one of the best-kept secrets of our day.

Lights Out is one wake-up call none of us can afford to miss.

    Download Description

We all know we don't get enough sleep. What we don't know is that there is a killer connection between sleep, food, light, and health. And that when it comes to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and depression, you need to rethink everything you know. Based on years of research at the National Institute of Health, Kept in the Dark will tell you: -- Why weight-loss is as easy as the flick of a switch -- Why researchers can give mice cancer just by leaving the lights on -- Why exercise can really give you a heart attack -- Why Type II diabetes has increased four-fold and why you're next -- Why you're overproducing sex hormones but you're too tired to want sex -- Why infertility plagues Baby Boomers -- Why we're a Prozac Nation and still fight depression constantly -- Why you'll go the way of the dinosaurs if you don't eat and sleep in sync with the spin of the planet

5 out of 5 stars Writing style is a matter of taste.......2007-04-12

I agree with those reviewers who point out the many positive, scientific aspects of this book. It's an important read for anyone interested in the epidemic of adult-onset diabetes and obesity in America, as well as for those generally interested in health, longevity, evolution of the human species, etc.

I part ways with those who complain about T. S. Wiley's writing style. I found it amusing and accessible, whereas most books covering this sort of topic with so many footnotes would tend to put one to sleep within a few pages. If one is total stickler for scientific accuracy and lack of opinion in such writing, stick to reading juried science journals, I guess. This is a popular press, general public book and the writing is on target for that population. It makes the book easy to read and entertaining, allowing even the average Joe and Jane to burn through the pages and still understand everything.

As someone with a solid science and engineering background, the glossed over bits didn't detract from the essential message at all in my opinion. But this is really no argument against others' opinions, either. Writing style is greatly a matter of personal taste. Some people will always like or dislike a particular author's style. I believe this book is important enough to ignore any such agreements to disagree on the subject of style.

2 out of 5 stars Lights Out: Great information, bad presentation........2007-02-20

The general premise of the book (get more sleep, eat less carbs, follow our internal circadian rhythms) is sound, backed by scientific proof. However, T.S. Wiley is prone to making large jumps in logic. For instance, she writes about vegetarians slowly killing themselves by not eating enough protein. What about the slowly growing body of evidence that vegetarian lifestyles can prevent heart disease, Alzheimer's, and other ailments?

Wiley is also very adamant that we have not had enough time to adapt to the introduction of a grain/farming lifestyle, explaining that the only reasons our ancestors survived was due to the amount of energy that was required to farm. Again - what about the theories that certain blood types evolved precisely because of the new agrarian lifestyle? Many cultures still exist on a primarily grain diet, and have low incidences of heart disease, diabetes, etc.

Another large jump is her lack of explanation for our increased life-spans since Paleolithic times; not sure that just "introduction of anti-biotics" covers it.

Other readers have already mentioned wrinting style, so I will only add that the small "soundbites" scattered between practically every paragraph served only to annoy after the first twenty or so pages.

Having read a lot of diet/exersice and also mind/body books, let me give a few last words of advice to Wiley and Co.:
    1. Readers want to see the "true-life" stories. Where are the stories of people who have heeded this advice and went on to kick cancer, battle obesity, overcome diabetes, etc.?
    2. Skip the overly scientific analysis. The basic message could be distilled into 2 chapters, to be augmented with optional plans for change.
    3. Give personal testimony about how these methods have changed your life.
    4. I realize that this would have to be a more expanded book to account for the above, but there are about three chapters in the middle that could be removed to make room!

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER PARADIGM SHIFT.......2006-10-03

I stumbled across this book a few months ago and it opened my eyes to the obvious. We need to sleep more! And in total darkness! Almost every ailment I have suffered from I can attribute to lack of sleep and/or stress. But the modern paradigm says "change your diet," which I did by eating organic real foods ( including grass fed beef, chicken, and the demonized raw milk ).Apparently, that isn't good enough (and I should have known better). I've always questioned authority and to learn ( by reading this book) that most health concerns have been translated into "for profit" solutions does not surprise me in the least.

And to all of you health conscious runners out there - you'll be shocked to learn that you're training your body to be prey by filling your body up with the over production of cortisol (stress) which leads to heart issues ( Remember Frank Shorter).

Vegetarians beware - eating vegetables all year long keeps your body in "summer mode" which makes it insulin resistant. This is shown to be the reason for weight gain because your body thinks winter is coming. Winter being the months of little food over the ages. Extended insulin resistance reduces the immune defenses which lead to disease.

Remember, life is a mystery. Enjoy it! Never trust anything until you research it. Read this book at least two to three times. Its chuckfull of scientific information that's worth the time invested.

And on a political standpoint - support peace and the Constitution. Research 9/11, the Federal Reserve, the IRS, the North American Union proposals,etc.,etc.,etc....

3 out of 5 stars Wish I'd seen this years ago........2006-07-29

The concept of this book is simple - Get enough sleep. It is not an easy read, but I wish it had been available to me when I was much younger and could have applied the knowledge back then. I spent much of my life avoiding sleep and staying up until all hours. This book does go into excruciating detail to support the theory, and I have already begun shutting off the lights to go to sleep. I would recommend it for the concepts it presents, but literally one third of the pages are footnotes!

5 out of 5 stars Great Scientific Book Written in Layman's Terms.......2005-12-16

I seem to come back to this book every winter because it offers such a strong argument for eliminating many of our modern health problems. This book offers a common sense approach backed by alot of science and some humor as well. I would like to know what kind of a response it has received from the medical community. To me, the recommendations and theories in this book are well worth a try. I am doing my best to live by them this winter and see how it goes. Why is it that only us and our pets get cancer? Why did our nations biggest killers (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and depression) coincide so closely with the electrification of our lives and the invention of processed foods? Why didn't people suffer from these diseases prior to the 1920's when they ate diets of fresh, fatty, in season foods? Why hasn't the lowfat movement of the '80s cured many of the problems it was designed to prevent? Where have huge profits been made at our expense? These are all questions that are convincingly argued in "lights out." Part conspiracy theory (and justifiably so, i think), mostly science, and some humor make this one a treasure. I am thankful to the person who recommended it to me and I hope all of you will give it a try as well. I got bogged down in the scientific details my first time through.... but don't let that slow you down. You can absorb most of the really important parts by reading the first and last parts. The best part is that the science here boils down to common sense. It's not a "quick fix" diet or a drug prescription to make you well. You're not going to hurt yourself any by making these simple lifestyle changes. And anyone can do it. Hey, it beats chemo. and bypass surgery!

This look at the benefits of sunlight looks at how the sun can prevent and cure diseases, as well as help us in the future.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2007-02-09

Well written explanation of benefits of sunlight - as opposed to the ridiculous paranoia emanating from the "slip, slop, slap" brigade. My only reservation was that there wasn't enough discussion on the "practicalities" - eg. how long? at what time of day? etc

5 out of 5 stars The Truth About Sunlight.......2006-11-14

Many ancient cultures worshipped the sun, which is understandable given the healing power it contains. While I don't worship the sun, but rather it's Creator, I am truly grateful for the healing power it contains. For years sunlight has been put down as unhealthy by the mainline medical establishment. In his well researched, most imterestingly written book, "The Healing Sun," Richard Hobday not only gives you the history of sunlight theraphy, but also the facts concerning the health benfefits of sunlight.

    Did you know that:
-Sunlight can prevent and heal many common and often fatal diseases like breast cancer, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, and osteoporosis?
-Before antibiotics, sunlight was used successfully to spped up helaing of wounds?
-Prolonged exposure to artifical light puts the body under great stress?
-Early morning sunlight in cool temperatures is especially benificial to the body?
Read this well written, informative book for the details concerning all these facts and much more.

5 out of 5 stars The Healing Sun.......2006-07-03

This book provides some balance to the healing properties of the sun. More and more research is showing that the sun is not all bad. I want to be able to use the sun to help my body do its job much better. Your service was tops.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for alternative medicine enthusiasts........2000-03-03

In The Healing Sun: Sunlight And Health In The 21st Century, Richard Hobday shows how the sun is central to human health and well-being. He explains that sunlit houses can help prevent disease, make us feel happier, and save energy; that sunlight can help prevent and heal many common (and often fatal) disease like breast cancer, heart disease, multiple sclerosis and osteoporosis; that sunlight was used successfully to speed up the healing of wounds before the invention of antibiotics; tanning moderately throughout the year is better than avoiding the sun altogether; sudden bursts of strong solar radiation are unnatural and dangerous, protection needs to be built up slowly, early morning sunlight in cool temperatures is particular beneficial to the body; sunlight hospital rooms provide a better environment for the treatment of clinically depressed people; prolonged exposure to artificial light puts the body under great stress; and much, much more. The Healing Sun is a unique and invaluable contribution to personal and professional alternative health and medical reference collections.

      Book Description

Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) would have been an extraordinary person in any age. But for a woman of the twelfth century her achievements were so exceptional that posterity has found it hard to take her measure. Barbara Newman, a premier Hildegard authority, brings major scholars together to present an accurate portrait of the Benedictine nun and her many contributions to twelfth-century religious, cultural, and intellectual life. Written by specialists in fields ranging from medieval theology to medicine to music, these essays offer an understanding of how one woman could transform so many of the traditions of the world in which she lived.
Hildegard of Bingen was the only woman of her age accepted as an authoritative voice on Christian doctrine as well as the first woman permitted by the pope to write theological books. She was the author of the first known morality play; an artist of unusual talents; the most prolific chant composer of her era; and the first woman to write extensively on natural science and medicine, including sexuality as seen from a female perspective. She was the only woman of her time to preach openly to mixed audiences of clergy and laity, and the first saint whose biography includes a first-person memoir.
Adding to the significance of this volume is the fact that Hildegard's oeuvre reflects the entire sweep of twelfth-century culture and society. Scholars and lay readers alike will find this collection a rich introduction to a remarkable figure and to her tumultuous world. With the commemoration of the 900th anniversary of Hildegard's birth in September 1998, the publication of Voice of the Living Light is especially welcome.

5 out of 5 stars Very good information.......2007-03-26

The 'Ps' have done it again. I first read this book at the library. One of those 'must have' books. Will get you ready for the upcoming earth changes. Prepares you spiritually and physically, and kicks you through the goalposts of denial. Makes you think and yet is very supportive of each human being with service-to-others in mind. Gentle, removes self-doubt like "Is it just me or are there really big changes in store for mankind?" Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Recomiendo este libro.......2006-12-26

      Blessings.

4 out of 5 stars The Family of Light-Pleiadian Tales and lessons in Living.......2005-09-12

This book is a must read for anyone seeking answers as to why our democratic society in the United States is falling apart. the catastrophic occurances of 10/17/1989 in San Francisco, the attack of 9/11/2001, the Tsunami devastation in the Indian ocean area of early 2005 and now Katrina devastates the Gulf Coast of North America. There is a pattern, and it is manifesting the errors of our greedy preoccupations. We need to return to simple living. This is an important wake-up call to us all before a reign of terror.

4 out of 5 stars Quality channeled material that exposes the "dark".......2005-05-19

This book is a continuation of the "Pleiadian" materials contained in Marciniak's previous books. I found this book to be better and more focused than the previous ones. It is focused on issues that many people are confronting in the era leading to the year 2012, giving a background to this story from the perspective of the channeled source that calls itself a multi-dimensional consciousness associated with the Pleiades star system. This material addresses a lot of things related to how we need to reclaim our psychological freedom and get beyond all the dark-polarity control systems that humans are mired in. It has lots of good information and insights - better than most channeled material around these days. There is more and more tangible evidence to support many of the things this material exposes, although I don't concur 100% with everything said by the Pleidians. By their own admission they are interacting with us as part of their learning experience, so they have their flaws in their ideas just as we all do.

4 out of 5 stars Family of Light: Pleiadian Tales and Lessons in Living.......2003-09-05

Third in the series of channeled material by this author. A bit slow reading, and it is hightly recommended that you read the first 2 books: " Bringers of the Dawn" and "Earth", or you may have some difficulty with the material. You should be familiar with the concept of "Channeling" before reading this book. If you have not read channeled material, but are open to the idea, the first book "Bringers of the Dawn" will be enlightening. The only reason I rate the book a "4" instead of a five, is because it may not stand alone, and thus be misunderstood by those not involved in the spiritual search.

2 out of 5 stars Self Fulfilling prophet.......2006-07-06

Kubler-Ross would lead us to believe that her powers of intuition--especially when it comes to the subject of death--are superior to the rest of us. Through the lectures reprinted in this book she demonstrates many things, including magnificient compassion, intellect, humor, self-awareness and strength; but her contstant claims of intuition (especially with children, who cannot communicate at an adult level even when not dying) do nothing but fulfill her own views of the dying process. And when she is wrong in some way (a patient dies sooner or later than she intuited), there is always an unverifiable emotional or psychological argument for the patient's defiance of her claims. She is not a scientist; or, at least not a very good one, and this book put me off as I struggled to deal with my dying father's situation because of her obsession with proving how clever she was.

      5 out of 5 stars A Classic Life-After-Death Book.......2006-02-26

The Tunnel And The Light is a collection of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's lectures on living and dying. I read this book as part of my research for my next book on life, death and life-after-death. The author is the foremost authority on the subject of dying, beginning with her first book, On Death And Dying, which took the world by storm more than thirty years ago.

I learned more from this collection of lectures-inciting both tears and laughter throughout my reading-than I learned in reading several other books on the subject. It is my conviction that we have much to gain about life when we study death, and that is never more true than in this compassionate and wisdom-filled collection of speeches.

Whether you want to learn how to deal with children in the face of a family member's death (or a child's own dying experience), better understand your own mortality and unavoidable terminal ending, or gain insight into life-after-death based on Dr. Kubler-Ross's knowledge of near-death experiences and her own mystical encounters, then this is the book for you. In the end, you won't just be more comfortable with the subject of death, but you will be more knowledgeable about life as well.

      ~ Bob Olson, OfSpirit.com Editor

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding reading experience.......2006-02-25

The book is a transcription of lectures delivered by Ms Kubler-Ross to live audiences. Her messages are very direct, avoiding redundant references to commonplaces.
I see the book split in 2 big segments: (1)learning about natural fears and acquired fears in order to be able to master the fear of death and (2) Understanding the importance of unfinished businesses and the need to clean them for better enjoyment of life.

      5 out of 5 stars Life Enhancing!.......2001-08-31

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Makes You Think.......2004-09-09

In our stressful lives, Sarah Breathnach's calm voice outlines a path to sanity. She advocates nurturing our spirits, our relationships and creating serene spaces in our lives.
I want to play this over and over, so it soaks into my consciousness. I want to share this message with all the frazzled women I know. She blends literature and a variety of religions without being preachy. Quotes from Star Wars, Bhudda, Irish proverbs and Shaker writings are sprinkled throughout serving to launch her essays.
Over all, it is about tuning into ourselves and paying attention to our basic needs (no, not material possessions, though she does not advocate a spartan lifestyle).
For women who feel there is no time to tend to their inner needs and who find the daily demands at times overwhelming, I wholeheartedly recommend this.
