Book Description

"...purebred or mixed, with this book any dog can become a Canine Good Citizen.... The Volhards'...approach to training, which they call the Motivational Method,...is designed to do just thatmotivate the owner and the dog. The Motivational Method is grounded on a thorough knowledge of how people learn and dog behavior. Since 1983 they have authored or co-authored four major books on dog training and teaching dog Obedience classes, and have produced four video tapes. I am...pleased that they have written this book on the Canine Good Citizen. I cannot think of anyone else who could have done a better job. This book contains everything the reader needs to know about training any dog to become a Canine Good Citizen. Still, there is much morethe book shares a wealth of insights for the beginner, as well as the experienced dog person. The book's best feature is that it gives each person the means to tailor the training to the individual dog's character and temperament. It thoroughly explains what makes dogs different and how these differences dictate the approach to training that needs to be taken." -James E. Dearinger, AKC Vice President, Obedience

The American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen program was developed to promote responsible dog ownership in a manner that would be easy for both dog and owner. Any book that promotes and encourages dog owners to participate is doing a public service, and this book does it well.

"This book is aptly named. Yes, every dog, both pure-bred dogs and mixed breeds, can be a good citizen if their owners care enough to make it happen. The key is to encourage dog owners everywhere to be responsible enough to make their dogs a pleasure to be around and able to handle most situations that they might be expected to encounter in everyday life." -Robert H. McKowen AKC Vice President, Performance Events

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've read on teaching manners to the family dog.......2007-06-21

This little volume is pure gold. Some may criticize this book as not being advanced enough, or not containing new information - they are missing the point. Ultimately this is a book about educating people about how to help their dogs learn good people manners.

While the context is preparing for the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test, really this book is for any dog owner. If you have a family dog that needs a little help in learning good people manners, this is the book for you. If you are already involved in competitive dog sports, such as obedience trials or have experience in dog training, this book has not really been written for you.

The Canine Good Citizen test involves 10 individual tests, all of which allow the dog to show that she well mannered in everyday situations. For example two of the tests include the dog must sit politely while being petted by a stranger, and walk politely on leash through a crowd.

Whether you ever test your dog or not, teaching these skills to your dog will result in a dog that is well behaved, a joy to be around. Isn't that what everyone really wants for their family dog?

For me, the best parts of the book are those that coach you on how to work with your dog, how to understand the dog's psychology - how dogs learn. This has been invaluable to me. Early in the book, the authors introduce the idea that dogs are, of course, pack animals. Our human family becomes their pack, and someone has to be the leader of the pack. For everyone's sake, the leader of the pack must be one of the people - not the dog. The Volhards help you understand how to be the pack leader. This is not hard to do and certainly does not require you to be unkind to your dog. Our dog has learned these lessons well enough that she even cheerfully takes commands from our 3 1/2 year old son.

There is plenty of good advice here about preparing for the actual CGC test and what to expect. If passing the CGC test is your goal, the easiest approach is to enroll yourself and your dog in a hands on obedience class and use this book as the companion text book you almost won't get otherwise.

For those without ready access to obedience classes, this book does provide guidance on how to train your dog by yourself. Having been through several obedience classes with our dog, I believe that if you followed the Volhards' advice carefully - and actually practiced the skills as they suggest - you really could train your dog on your own using this book.

I have set myself a challenge - to have our family dog (a 2 year old shelter rescue Australian Shepherd mix) take and pass the CGC test at the local dog show in about a month. As the local dog show is VERY large, this will be an extremely distracting environment and a real challenge for our dog. I am convinced that when our dog takes the test she will pass. This book has helped me understand how to get her ready and how to help her be pretty much the perfect family dog.

In the year-and-a-half since the kids wore me down and convinced me we really "needed" a dog, I have bought several dog books and skimmed many more at bookstores and libraries. This is the one book I would enthusiastically recommend for any dog owner in the early stages of teaching good manners to their dog, even if they never plan on having their dog take the Canine Good Citizen test.

Great stuff, and highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Easy read, straight-forward, good images = good book!.......2006-07-31

I just received this book a few days ago, but sat down and skimmed it cover to cover. I realized a few things that we were doing with our 4 month old GSD puppy that we should change. The book was easy to understand. The drawings/images help demonstrate proper techniques. There is a great 8-week training schedule to help get any dog trained and manageable. The book also goes over the elements of how a dog is tested for the Canine Good Citizen test and ways to approach the 10 different elements to prepare him/her for the examination. Additionally, it lets you know what you can or cannot do during the test - such as constant verbal contact with the dog being acceptible and no use of food for motivation. I'm excited to start this training and hopefully get our girl her CGC certification.

5 out of 5 stars What every dog should read!.......2006-06-12

This is an excellent primer for teaching your dog good manners and was very helpful when I began teaching my dog, Coco, to be a pet assisted therapy dog.

2 out of 5 stars Not a lot of content.......2005-07-31

The notion of drive states is interesting. The description of the particular states is not altogether convincing. Basic criticism: Not much development/content for a book.

5 out of 5 stars Good all-around basic training book.......2004-04-08

This book centers around the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test, outlining the purpose and content of the test, and providing training information to prepare your dog for the test.
It also provides a useful way to determine the best methods to train your dog, based on your dog's individual drives (a test is provided to determine the level of prey/pack/fight/flight drives in your dog). I found it very helpful in preparing for the CGC test, as well as providing insight into understanding my dog, and ideas to work with her in a productive manner - it includes a very helpful section on stress & training. It does not go into much detail regarding more severe problem behaviors, but covers the basics in a clear & easy-to-understand manner.

5 out of 5 stars "Who's Walkin' Who Here?".......2004-04-14

"Citizen Dog" Fergus was the best canine to ever hit a newspaper. This initial collection of comic strips featuring the ever suave Fergus and his well-meaning and overwhelmed "owner", Mel, is a real treat for those of us who faithfully read the strip back in the day. For those who haven't had the pleasure of seeing a dog converse with a French waiter or become the top salesdog in a pet store, you don't know what you've been missing. So, if you only buy one book this year...hey, don't be cheap! Get this book, and pick up Mark O'Hare's other two volumes: "Dog's Best Friend: More Citizen Dog Reflections" and "D Is For Dog." (Warning: If your dog happens to read these books, hide the car keys. Really.)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best comic strips ever!.......2004-03-26

The "Citizen Dog" comic strip was one of the best ever. Mark O'Hare has a delightfully wicked sense of humor and he brings such life and animation to his characters. You don't have to be a dog lover to appreciate Fergus, the smart-mouthed dog in this series ... or the lovable antics of his owner, Mel. Get a taste for the comic strip at: http://www.ucomics.com/citizendog/.

Unfortunately, Mark O'Hare is no longer creating new Citizen Dog strips, so all we have left is these fabulous books. There are three in the series:
1) Citizen Dog: The First Collection [ISBN: 0836251865]
2) Dog's Best Friend: More Citizen Dog Reflections [ISBN: 0836267516]
3) D is for Dog [ISBN: 0740704575]

Happy reading!

5 out of 5 stars Extemely funny.......2003-05-11

This was the first time i ever read citizen dog. I read my first strip in Chicken soup for the cat and dog lovers soul. Then i ordered this offline. Once i read it i ordered the other books. Fergus is so funny. There are amazingly funny stories in this like when Fergus steals all the fire hydrants and Fergus and Arlo challenge the mailman to a basketball game.

4 out of 5 stars Great art, evolving humor.......2000-01-13

Fans of the currently syndicated newspaper strip will find through this collection that Citizen Dog has been through some changes since its origin. If nothing else, O'Hare is a superb artist with a flair for both motionless and kinetic moments. His draftsmanship sustains the strip. At this point, however, the humor is much more slapstick than verbal or intellectual. Many of the gags are Tex Avery-esque, or harken back to vaudeville days. That's an interesting style in itself, but as humor, it pales in comparison to the current incarnation of the strip. Those who think the artistic side of cartooning and gag writing is in decline, however, need look no further than this book for a spirited refutation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......1998-08-24

I started reading this book and within two pages was hooked. It is hilarious. Help us if all dogs start acting like Fergus. I think O'Hare has surpassed his Purdue "Art Gallery" strip.

When a few scruffy "redneck hippies" first gathered in 1980 in the isolated Pinacate of Mexico to discuss environmental issues, none had any idea that they would launch a movement that would involve thousands of activists and a good number of FBI agents. But by the time they emerged from that wild country, Dave Foreman and company had evolved into Earth First!, a group that vowed to protect wild places by whatever means necessary. Susan Zakin traces the movement over 10 years to its splintering in the early 1990s after Foreman and three other activists were arrested for conspiracy to destroy an Arizona nuclear-power plant. Zakin's vivid prose mirrors the movement's excitement, occasional terror, and just as occasional triumph--notably author Edward Abbey's notorious "cracking" of the Glen Canyon Dam in 1981 (a giant roll of black polyurethane provided the illusion that the dam had sprung a leak), which first brought Earth First! national attention.

Book Description

From tree-spiking old-growth forests to "cracking" desert dams, Earth First! redefined environmentalism in America. Susan Zakin's fast-paced tale of these scruffy radicals and their suit-and-tie counterparts in Washington, D.C., has been described as an unholy marriage of Hunter S. Thompson and Tom Wolfe. The hipster cowboys who founded Earth First! were the first people to sound the alarm on globalization, extinction, and other major environmental issues that face us today. Zakin's gonzo yet impeccably researched account of the rocky trail leading to the morning when FBI agents rousted Earth First! founder Dave Foreman from his bed at gunpoint is essential reading for anyone who cares about mountains, deserts, and freedom.

4 out of 5 stars Coyotes and Town Dogs.......2006-11-29

Very good history of Earth First! before they got taken over by politically correct left coast weenies. Earth First! was very cool back in the day. They were very radical redneck hippies that drank beer, got laid, ate meat, smoked dope, in general they weren't opposed to hunting, were very politically incorrect and they got things done without compromise when mainstream conservation groups couldn't or wouldn't. Lots of interesting stuff on Dave Foreman and other well known Earth Firsters as well as other environmental groups and activists, plus info on the Judi Barr bombing as well as the FBI's methods of infiltration when they targetted Dave Foreman in their failed attempt to put him away.

4 out of 5 stars Pull up some survey stakes, drink a beer, and read this book.......2004-10-01

Zakin spins an entertaining story of the rise and ultimate fall from grace of one of the most influential environmental organizations of our time. The book emphasis is clearly on Foreman and his cronies and their hard-drinking, take-no-prisoner stand on protecting wilderness. If you're interested in a detailed look inside the personalities that created and shaped Earth First!, then this is your book.

4 out of 5 stars Provides the Big Wilderness Picture.......2004-02-23

One half of the content of this book is a worthwile, concise history of the western U.S. wilderness preservation movement covering the last half of the 20th century. It is required reading for anyone with an interest -- or a motive ;>) As for the rest of the content, concerning Zakin's treatment of Foreman and as to her patronizing of Foreman (concerns raised here by previous critics), I don't know. I guess you had to have been there. But Foreman and EarthFirst! are mentioned only briefly before page 186 (of 443) and only so as to frame the history that portends Foreman's founding of EarthFirst! So, I would have to say that this history is relatively unbiased especailly given it's subject. After three years of trying to get the big picture of the entire history of contemporary wilderness advocacy, I have finally found it here. Really worthwile and entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Needs better research.......2001-05-11

I am mentioned in this book as Dave's friend "Mike". I just wish the author had interviewed me, then she would have gotten the story right about Dave's leaving the Marines. When Dave decided the Marines weren't for him, he came back to Albuquerque and called me first. The story in the book and the story of what really happened are different. Similar but different. It makes me wonder about the authenticity of the rest of the book

5 out of 5 stars Historic review of U.S. "no compromise" environmentalism.......1998-12-16

If you want to know just how far the conservation movement has come in the US in the last 30 years, read this book. Susan Zakin tells it like it is, not bowing to the PC concerns of her enemies. Detailing the horrid compromising ways of large environmental organizations and government that pushed cutting-edge activists to lead by example in "no compromise in defense of mother earth." Some new age Earth First!ers hate this book. That's a good reason to read it. Great high-powered & entertaining writing style. Well researched. This book will teach, get you pissed off, and push you to become more radical. One of the top conservation books of the last decade.

The firsthand account of one woman's crusade to reintroduce an endangered species to the wild. Inspired by the plight of the Mexican gray wolf, retiree Bobbie Holaday formed a citizens advocacy group and soon found herself in the center of a firestorm of controversy, with environmentalists taking sides against ranchers and neighbors against neighbors. Searching the net for dogs in cartoons and comics, I stumbled on Fergus and Mel - and fell in love with them immediately. So I rushed to Amazon and bought the 3 "Citizen Dog" available books, and boy -- what a joy!

Fergus and company do entertain, with clever writing and appealing characters. Mel *is* dog's best friend; he and pal Fergus always are having fun together, like two children in a toy store. At the same time, they have their fights with each other. All in all, it always make you smile.

And although being a dog person, I cannot help from saying that Cuddles (AKA Claws, the culturally ambiguous cat) has become one of my favorite comic characters ever. Maybe because he is a little bit naive, and not so egoistical and mean like cats use to be... (sorry for that!). I also like Arlo and Bruno.

Forgot Snoopy and Garfield, folks; it's "Citizen Dog" time now. Way to go, Mark O'Hare!

5 out of 5 stars Vive les Weenies!.......2004-04-14

How can you not love a dog that drives, speaks French, and makes a mean macaroni and cheese? Once again, Fergus and his human Mel engage in a battle of wits and will. Naturally, Fergus comes out on top. (Don't blame Mel though -- he's only human.) This volume is actually my favorite of the three, mainly because it contains a sequence of strips en Francais. It's truly classic. (I think I still have the original newspaper strips somewhere.) There's also a good bit about Cuddles the Cat exploring his inner tomcat, leather jacket and all. All in all, I say buy this book and Vive les Weenies!

5 out of 5 stars Citizen Dog Rules.......2007-05-29

This is one of the best Citizen Dog books ever printed. Each and every page either brings a chuckle or a full laugh out loud roar. I seriously advise you to read this one.

5 out of 5 stars Fergus is Da Man, er, Dog!.......2004-04-14

Another great book of Citizen Dog strips from Mark O'Hare. Though this volume seems to devote quite a few pages to Cuddles the Cat, that doesn't detract from the essential "dogginess" of the collection. Frankly, it might even enhance it. Depicting Cuddles as the rather timid and hapless feline that he is only serves to magnify Fergus' robust, spirited, intelligent, charming, and confident canine nature. More than a bunch of comics, this book is a fabulous tribute to Fidos everywhere. I highly recommend that you get a copy for your favorite dog. (You're sure to enjoy it also!)

5 out of 5 stars M is For Missing Mark O'Hare (not to mention Fergus and Mel).......2001-09-27

I was so happy to find that Citizen Dog had finally made it to the status of a cartoon book -- I had missed it terribly after moving from the St. Paul area and have been on a start-and-stop letter-writing campaign to my local paper, repeatedly advising them to add this great little cartoon to their selection. (They never listened, unfortunately).

I had first seen Citizen Dog in The St. Paul Pioneer Press when I lived in nearby Inver Grove Heights, between 1996-1998. It was an hysterical cartoon. In it Fergus (the dog) and Mel (his human), are amazing equals, which I think expressed the closeness one can have with a pet. But I doubt Mr. O'Hare intended that-- it seems more of a natural evolution of the characters.

All I know is that it wasn't that surprising to find Fergus the driver and Mel the passenger in the car. Or, in one memorable instance, Mel chastizing Fergus for setting up Cuddles (the local cat and perennial target of jokes) by loosening the shaker of salt at the diner just prior to his joining them.

The situations they confronted were forever filled with mundane eccentricity -- like Fergus and Cuddles walking up to the Drive-Thru and, when Fergus explains to Cuddles, "you order anything you want here." Cuddles proceeds to ask for, "World Peace."

I was sad to hear that Mark O'Hare no longer draws Citizen Dog. There is only what is contained in this and his other books now. We'll miss you Mark. . . and Mel. . . .and, especially, Fergus.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner for fans of Mel and Fergus.......2000-06-01

Mark O'Hare continues his string of hilarious collections of the misadventures of Fergus, Mel, Cuddles, Bruno, and Fluffy. The humor is sly and mischievious. There are plenty of recognizable situations and far out extrapolations. For folks who enjoy a daily giggle via the comics, I highly recommend this collection, as well as the previous two books.

            Book Description

Average guy Mel has a new friend moving in, but the arrangement isn't working out the way he had anticipated. You see, he was expecting his new dog to be the loyal, trustworthy, man's-best-friend kind of housemate. Instead, Fergus is turning his world inside out, and the neighbors are starting to talk. Plenty of laugh-out-loud humor in this popular title.
