For kids to get their dose of action and thrills, they need not always go to the local multiplex for the latest bang 'em up film. They could try such books as The Whipping Boy, which relies not on exploding spaceships and demonic robots but mythic story, humorous characters and, ready or not, a moral. The plot involves the orphan Jemmy, who must take the whippings for the royal heir, Prince Brat. Jemmy plans to flee this arrangement until Prince Brat beats him to it, and takes Jemmy along. Jemmy then hears he's charged with the Prince's abduction as this Newbery Medal winning book turns toward a surprising close.

Book Description

A Prince
and a Pauper

Jemmy, once a poor boy living on the streets, now lives in a castle. As the whipping boy, he bears the punishment when Prince Brat misbehaves, for it is forbidden to spank, thrash, or whack the heir to the throne. The two boys have nothing in common and even less reason to like one another. But when they find themselves taken hostage after running away, they are left with no choice but to trust each other.

I remember reading this book in school and that it was really good. It's a very good children's book with such amazing imagery, and you really feel for the main character.
I sincerely recommend it.

thanks for your time,

4 out of 5 stars I llllooooovvvveeeeddd this book!.......2007-04-16

There was a Prince named Prince Horace. His nickname was "Prince Brat" because he was always selfish and arrogant. Since he was a prince he couldn't get spanked. So he had a whipping boy to get spanked when he did something bad. His name was Jemmy or as the King called him "Jemmy-from-the-streets." This book is good because it's adventurous and you learn how Kings, Princes, or Homeless people live. I recommend this book because I thought it was really good and it makes you feel like you don't want to put the book down once you've gotten in to it. And thats why i rated it 4 stars.

Prince Brat and Jemmy the Whipping Boy run away, and run into trouble. They are riding and they meet Cutwater and Hold-Your-Nose-Billy, some of the most wanted people. Cutwater and Billy kidnap them and hold them hostage. Finally they escape, but Cutwater and Billy are hot on their tail. They are walking and meet a girl who gives them food and shelter. If you want to know the rest, read The Whipping Boy.

I liked the Whipping Boy book becasue it tells you how mean we are to people and how we change. I would never run away becasue I would have no place to sleep or food to eat. The book is so good, you will like it.

2 out of 5 stars 5C.......2007-02-23

The book The Whipping Boy was very adventurous. But, I did not like it that well. I would give it a two out of five. Vocabulary of the book was a little hard, but I got it. The pace I did not like very well because it was slow, and with that hard vocabulary, it made it even slower. Understanding the story was a little tough because every chapter changed.

Prince Brat got a new whipping boy. One day they went to town. That's when Cutwater and Hold-Your-Nose-Billy kidnapped them. Jemmy (whipping boy) and Prince Brat got away and found a girl named Betsy. They lived with her for awhile. They decided to go back home because they got tired of the woods.

4 out of 5 stars Young Readers and THE WHIPPING BOY.......2006-08-07

THE WHIPPING BOY is a classic children's story, written at a level that second or third grade skilled readers can handle. It moves along quickly. Flieschman uses good word choices. It provides an excellent opportunity for young readers to apply text-to-self and inference skills. It deserves the Newbery Medal which it earned.

5 out of 5 stars Whip It Good!.......2001-06-12

I've always thought of John Byrne as a competent, if unspectacular, author, but Whipping Boy was a compelling read. Byrne's hypothesis of "what if there were no guilt" quickly leads the characters in a downward spiral that is all-too-believable. Whipping Boy, when read in a contemporary America of school shootings, child abuse and use of illicit narcotics, is a gripping cautionary tale about the decline of morality and the consequences of a society that too often takes the easy way out.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best horror novels of the decade!.......1999-02-16

John Byrne has created a masterpiece of modern horror. At times it becomes a truly disturbing look into the human conscience. Byrne's characters are genuine, real, and average, which makes the horrors they commit all the more atrocious. This book is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Shame its out of print.......1999-02-13

I have to say this book succeeded in scaring me as no Stephen King book did. It's a shame that this book is out of print. I think horror fans have missed out on a unique take on the horror genre.

5 out of 5 stars John Byrne is to horror what John Byrne is to super heroes........1998-10-09

A story that unfolds like a great horror movie. John Byrne introduces us to several characters who may seem insignificant at first, but come around to be major forces by the end. The evil charcters in this book are so real that you shake when they are in the page. The hapless victims under the Whipping Boy's thrall are you, me, anybody. When you can see yourself in their shoes, you feel a shiver crawl up your spine and nest in your brain's dark recesses.

    5 out of 5 stars I hated this book........1998-03-10

I read horror novels a lot. (Don't you?) But this book I hated -- because it was too good. It's a very real and immediate story about the evil that lurks in your own heart, and the hearts of the ones around you. And that made it absolutely terrifying. I know it's hard to find, but that's because no one who owns a copy will give theirs up easily...

    Book Description

'This,' Margaret said, 'is what's known as a pussy whip but, as more enlightened women have discovered, it works equally well on men. We will now try it out on you.' The silence in the room was absolute, except for the soft sibilance as her nylon-sheathed thighs rubbed together. Richard pulled frantically against the ropes that held him immobile, shaking his head, making noises of denial through the gag. Margaret watched his struggles with amusement. 'Come now,' she said teasingly. 'Think of how much little Helena enjoys being lashed between her delicious thighs. If she can take it, so can you.' Richard and his German girlfriend Helena have cocooned themselves in the English countryside, to live out their private - and elaborate - fantasies of submission and domination. But their rural idyll is threatened by the arrival of Helena's aunt Margaret - an imperious woman with very strict house rules and some very shady friends, who always gets what she wants. And what she wants is Richard . . . By the author of Agony Aunt.

    4 out of 5 stars BD/SM SERIES.......2003-04-09

After reading Travels With A Whip, I decided to order several other of Scott's erotic novels. When Whipping Boy and Whip Hand showed up together on my doorstep, I realized that one was the continuation of the other and read them accordingly. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that the saga of Richard, Helena, Margaret, and Ingrid had started previously in House Rules (which I read after the other 2). Be that as it may, I thoroughly enjoyed Whipping Boy before moving on to Whip Hand. If you like Scott's erotic novels, then check out this BD/SM series (only please start with House Rules). Now kneel you little worm.

              4 out of 5 stars First Rate.......1999-04-28

The careful reader of the Whipping Boy will note that Morgan accepts few of the stereotypes of the southwestern frontier. For example, Hanging Judge Parker has become a symbol to liberals of the mindlessly violent injustice of frontier justice, especially as by the 1880s Federal officials began working to undermine Parker's authority;Morgan reveals that Federal officials chiefly opposed Parker because he strictly enfoced the law to protect the Indians in what is now Oklahoma from both marauding criminal whites and from the Federal government itself that coveted their land and eventually would strip the Nations of their final sovereignty. The novel's time period is 1894, after the great land rush and when a combination of Federal officials and northeastern businessmen with experience in coal and oil began furtively plotting to destroy the Nations and create a larger Oklahoma ruled for and by the interests of those businessmen and their government allies, using white farmers as pawns to weaken the Indian Nations and to convince the American populace this was for the good of the USA as a whole - the same argument that propped the removal of the 5 Tribes from the southeast to what would be eastern Oklahoma.

Morgan didn't need the graphic sex scenes, and his presentation of the Presbyterian pastor who runs the orphanage for Indian boys is the one stock character living up to stereotypes. But The Whipping Boy is a better novel, in some ways vastly so, than the recent bestselling Toni Morrison work also set in Oklahoma, Paradise.
