In a sequel to Ellen Potter's delightful Olivia Kidney, 12-year-old Olivia and her handyman father George report for duty ("a live-in situation") at 917 West 84th Street in New York City, a curious brownstone with a flooded first floor -- a lagoon complete with boats, floating furniture, and snapping turtles. The handsome young owner, Ansel Plover, seems quite charming, but a neighbor warns Olivia that the man is "mad, bad, and dangerous." Her worst fears are confirmed when a redheaded man she sees yelling at Ansel one night dies a mysterious death in Central Park. Worse still, her father is almost poisoned by a pie. Is their new landlord a killer? The perpetual new kid on the block, Olivia doesn't have many friends to console her, but she does have a special way of communicating with her dead brother Christopher. Can he somehow, even from the spirit world, help her unravel the mystery on 84th Street? Peter H. Reynold's cartoonish black-and-white illustrations contribute a modern sensibility to this engaging, deliciously imaginative novel where, as Olivia learns, it's best not to jump to conclusions. (Ages 9 to 12) --Karin Snelson

Customer Reviews:
Not just because I illustrated this book...........2005-10-16
I fell in love with Olivia Kidney the first chapter I read of the first book. I was lucky enough to be the one asked to illustrate Ellen's fantastic world she has created. I agree with other reviewers that the story can be appreciated by adults as well. It is haunting and moving. I often describe this series as "Alice in Wonderland set in NYC, with a hint of Stephen King with a dash of Touched by an Angel." Weird and wonderful.
There IS in fact a movie in the works... stay tuned on Ellen Potter's website. A third book is also in the works - I am glad! Meanwhile I am busy on the Judy Moody series, as well as sequels to my books The Dot and Ish. My site has info on all my projects as well.
One of a kind masterpiece. A totally different and unique read........2005-09-01
This is such a good book, I feel it would be a waste to aim it at children only; neither do I think that children will understand all the many nuances, the richness and fullness of Ellen Potter's mixture of reality hardships, life and death issues, imagination and philosophical ideas. Off course, this is why this is such a good children book - because it has so many layers and can be experienced differently at every age.
"Olivia Kidney" was such a surprise, both wonderful and painful at the same time. This book is the second in what (hopefully) becomes a series and is no less interesting or elevating then the first. In fact I do believe that Ellen Potter outdid herself and reached new heights... I sound a little pompous but besides truly loving the book I feel the author also bravely dealt with a difficult issue.
The main story is about Olivia and her father, moving, once again, to a new place. Olivia is used to this routine but she never expected to arrive to such an amazing house and to meet such strange people. Olivia and her father arrive at the house of Ansel Pover and his assistant, the lovely Nora, but this is only the cover to several side stories entangled into a wide tale with some very coherent messages. Great characters (some of whom we met in the previous book) join Olivia in her journey to understand...
In the first book Olivia reaches some sort of acceptance with the death of her beloved brother Christopher through a very painful process involving contact with the other world. In this second book Ellen Potter chose a very direct approach to the issue of death itself. Death is a major issue here and it is not hushed aside but dealt with from many angels.
From the adult side, all the ideas about death and the ways to prepare for death sound very right and wanted and it is only too bad we cannot adopt them into our lives. The book proceeds in a manner that makes you think about it in a different way every step of the way. A good example would be the show Olivia watches, about the bear attacking the woman which was perceived by me as an ironical and comical tale about the relationship of an unfit couple. The ending was understood as a sort of awful "punishment" the wife receives for dragging her husband to the woods; then the story moves on and we now know this was only a death rehearsal and our whole perception changes.
I found this book to be very comforting and lovely in the sense that it looks death directly in the eye and makes it less intimidating. Ellen Potter has created all the technical devices to help you struggle: the animal, the repetitions, the preparations. I loved the idea of a death script that needs to be rehearsed
We can only hope that Ellen Potter knows more then us and some of what she tells about is true.
Excellent sequel.......2005-07-12
Ms. Potter has done it again. Exit Academy is a wonderful sequel to a first-rate tale of a young girl growing up in New York City. Right from the start you are whisked off into the realm of the supernatural, where things are most definitely not what they seem (a good lesson for all of us to bear in mind). Exit Academy is hilarious, scary and flows beautifully. Ms. Potter has an excellent command of characterization, too; her characters are fascinating and distinct, and like the first novel, we want to see more of them. (She does in fact bring back a character from the first book, and expands its history.) Ms. Potter has a writing style that is unique, entrancing, and does not shy away from real-world truth. I highly recommend this to children and adults alike.
So when's the movie coming out?

Olivia Kidney has just moved to another new apartment building, and Olivia's the new kid in school, again. Olivia thinks she's fed up with new places . . . until she gets a look at her building! Sure, it looks normal from the outside, but inside things are crazy. There are talking lizards crawling everywhere. An exiled princess haunts the hallways, and Olivia finds one apartment made entirely of glass! She's meeting fantastical characters and seeing wondrous sights that make Alice's Adventures in Wonderland seem tame. But among all the ghosts and pirates and princesses, can Olivia find a friend?

Olivia Kidney.......2007-04-13
Olivia Kidney is an exciting book that I would recommend to kids of all ages.
Olivia Kidney is a girl that is constantly moving from apartment to apartment
because of her dad's job as a superintendent at the apartment. She meets this
woman in her apartment that has glass floors and walls, and she can see through
above, beside and below into the other rooms. Then Olivia goes to Master Clive
and he tells her a story. The story is about these ships hearing a beautiful sound.
They follow it and it turns out that its really a trap that lizards set up to kill the
people on the ship and steal all of there money. Olivia, ends up on the island of
lizards and finds the shell. Do the lizards kill her or not?
The setting in this book are very interesting. There are a lot of different
places she goes to. The first one is her new apartment. It has twenty-three floors
and she lives on the fourteenth floor. Everyone is annoyed with her because she is
too loud. The second place is Master Clive's house. She lives in a wooden, kind of
tree house thing. Its really dirty. Last but not least she ends up on the Beach. The
lizards are in charge of the beach.
This is for sure one of the funnest books I have ever read.
Interesting and fun book.......2007-02-28
I thought this book was really cool and interesting because of all the scenes and problems she had faced. I thought the glass apartment was awesome i even read this book for my book repost for school and made a diarama of the glass apartment.!!! i recommened this book to any adventure lover.
Olivia Kidney.......2006-01-31
Olivia Kidney
If you lost your apartment keys would you search all over for them? You probably would.
Well it all started one day when this girl named Olivia kidney lost her apartment keys at school. She had just moved into a new apartment and a new school, so as you would expect she didn't know her way around. As she was looking for her keys she ran into many strange things such as talking lizards, a rainforest apartment, ghosts that only she could see, and even an apartment made entirely of glass!!
Olivia Kidney is a shy and open girl, she is ready for anything coming her way as she is looking for her apartment keys she has to face almost death. My favorite character in this book is Olivia. She is an intelligent little girl who is on a mission and nothing can get in the way.
I would defiantly recommend this book to girls. I would also recommend this book to someone who likes adventurous, dramatic, and funny books.
Wonderful Book to Read Aloud.......2005-04-03
This book has such great stories mixed into the story line it makes it a really fun book to read aloud to a classroom. I "read" the audio version which gave me the idea. The book is really fun, and alot of kids will love Olivia's adventures!
A Wonderful Story!.......2005-01-04
I loved this story! I listened to it to preview it before handing it down to my 8-year-old daughter, and I can't wait to share it with her. So much of children's stories are "fluff"-- endless volumes in series about flat characters that have adventures but never have any personal growth or deep thoughts. They get kids to read I guess but not to think or feel. THIS, on the other hand, is a quality story. It provokes emotions, and leaves you feeling moved. The characters are full and unique. Olivia, the heroine, is a likeable but lonely and grieving misfit who comes to terms with her feelings and experiences. She does this over the course of a single day full of improbable but wildly entertaining encounters with the very strange inhabitants of her apartment building.
Parents selecting this book for young children might want to know a few things more about the story. First of all, supernatural and magical things happen. These fantastical elements are not as obvious as in most "fantasy" novels. The story takes place in the everyday world, but there are séances, ghosts, people turned into lizards, and magical siren-call singing. Because these things are slipped into what is otherwise the "real world", younger kids might need some guidance about what is possible in the real world and what isn't. Similarly, in this story people talk to the spirits of the recently departed and are comforted by that contact. This also might need some "spin"-- I wouldn't want a real child who had lost someone to feel even more abandoned because THEIR lost loved one doesn't find a way to talk to THEM. It also might conflict with your family's religious and/or philosophical views about what happens after death.
With that in mind, I HIGHLY recommend this wonderful story for children and adults alike.
