Book Description
It starts when Alexandria, a poor, plain goose girl, offers her own bread and water to a hungry old woman-who just happens to be a witch in disguise. Poof! Alexandria is suddenly heartstoppingly beautiful. Her hair rains down gold dust, and the tears she sheds turn to diamonds. Soon a prince and a king are fighting for her hand, and they've locked her in a tower to keep her "safe." How Alexandria wishes she was a goose girl again! Clearly the only thing to do is escape-which is when her problems really begin! Patrice Kindl's inimitable voice and craft make this take on the classic fairy tale extraordinary-and extraordinarily hilarious.
"A delightful, witty fairy-tale spoof.. . . Kindl's humor, the strong characterizations, and vibrant action give the story wings." (Booklist, starred review)

Many would think Alexandria Aurora Fortunato to be blessed. She is not only extraordinarily beautiful, but gold pours from her hair and diamonds fall in place of her tears. However, truthfully, she has been cursed with these gifts ever since an old hag showed up at Alexandria's humble cottage and begged for a bite to eat. As a reward for Alexandria's kindness, a spell was cast--and Alexandria's life changed forever.
No longer a simple goose girl, Alexandria is kept locked in a tower where she is forced to sew every last stitch on her gold wedding gown. When the last stitch is finished, she will be forced to marry either King Claudio the Cruel or the dim-witted Prince Edmund from the neighboring country. Both want her only for her wealth, and Alexandria knows she must find a chance to escape. Luck is on the way, and she manages to run away with the help of her flock of enchanted geese. Now her real adventures are set to begin!
Along the way, she and her goose friends have magical adventures involving hungry ogresses, a bumbling prince, dark dungeons, and a special set of royal jewels. Add in a sprinkling of romance and you get a good fantasy novel with a fairytale spin that every girl can enjoy! The character, Alexandria, is strong, witty, brave, and a perfect heroine for this awesome novel. An exciting and twisting plot will keep readers entertained for hours, but will there be a happy ending? Read the book to find out more!

Amusing story, not the best read.......2006-06-14
I had seen really good reviews about this book and was excited to read it. I read it in about two-three hours (it's suprisingly short), and although I enjoyed it, was a little disappointed.
The book starts out funny and engaging, promising that a good story follows. I was immediately surprised, however, at how short the whole tower scene was. We have barely even gotten to know any of the characters before Alexandria is whisked off by her geese. The rest of the book continues this way; the setting changes very quickly and we are left wanting to know a little bit more about the setting and our characters' personalities.
The language used in this book is also very annoying and a bit confusing; it's sort of a medieval dialect mixed with a little bit of other random speech. There are also a few continuity problems that can be spotted throughout.
While I thought it was very clever how Kindl was able to incorporate so many different fairy tales into one novel, I was really not impressed by the ending. She moves the story along so fast that it makes the ending, although a bit predictable, very unbelievable. The book keeps leading up to something; and then it ends, a bit disappointingly.
If you want an amusing, light, fun little read, then I would recommend Goose Chase. I think this book would be more appropriate and suprising for younger children. I did have fun reading it, but if you really want to read an excellent, more engaging re-telling of a fairy tale (or tales), I would really recommend something else.

Geese aren't just for barn yards.......2006-05-24
This is a wonderful yet unique Fairytale. It is most difinitely not your ordinary fairytale, but this is exactly the reason that makes it so good. Alexandria a.k.a Goose Girl is a young girl of the age 14. She has two royal suitors seeking her hand in marriage. Alexandria has other plans. All the poor girl wants is to take care of her beloved geese. She is interrupted by a grand adventure in the company of one of her suitors the prince. They encounter a few magical creatures along there way including three ogresses. This magical tale is full of many magnificent surprises that not even Alexandria herself can predict. This tale includes romance, curiosity, and of course love for a good fairytale.
Good story but Difficult to read.......2005-10-30
The story in this book is clever and humorous but the author's attempt to write in a sort of Elizabethan English akin to Shakespeare is a clumsily annoying contrivance that makes it unnecessarily hard to decipher. This forced archaic manner of speech the author used for the characters severely detracts from the enjoyment of what is a good plot. One gets the sense that the author is torn between making the characters speak as though they were from a Grimm fairy tale one minute and then like they are a bad stereotype of a hillbilly the next. I had an easier time reading James Joyce's "Ulysses".

Goose Chase
By Patrice Kindl
Puffin Books
Goose Chase, written by Patrice Kindl is a fantasy book about a young girl and her Geese. Alexandria Aurora Fortunato is poor but happy until Alexandria's mother dies. Then another bad thing happens. An old crone comes up to her as she is minding her Geese, and gives her magical gifts. Although they were supposed to be a blessing, Alexandria hates it because she is stuck up in a tower until she chooses between the simpleminded Prince of Dorloo and King Carlos the Cruel of Gilboa for her husband. She wants neither, and with the help of her Geese she escapes. She is in store for more adventures however. Eventually, she seems to be so close to freedom. Then King Carlos captures her to become his bride. Can she escape from his evil clutches?
There are several main characters in Goose Chase. Alexandria, of course, who just wants to go back to the life she and her mother led before the old crone gave her the "wonderful" gifts. She is also the narrator. Another main character, or in this case set of characters are her Geese, who have plans of their own for her and themselves and will bite anyone who is foolish get in their way. Her two would-be-husbands are also main characters. The Prince of Dorloo is exceedingly well meaning but exceedingly dimwitted. The evil and mean King Carlos wants Alexandria for her magical gifts. The final main character is the old crone, who started all this for purposes of her own.
I would recommend this book for several reasons. It has a really good plot, with lots of twists, especially at the end. The characters are realistic, at least as far as they can be in a fantasy book. There is a " and they lived happily ever after" ending. It is a terrific page turner, and you are drawn into it like a whirlpool. The way it was written was very light and humorous. Anyone who likes adventure books of any type would like Goose Chase! On a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 9.7. I just wish it was longer!

Max, the King of Chagrin Falls.......2000-03-21
I just met the author and the illustrator of this book at a local bookstore. Annie, Max's sister was also there, but Max was too dirty to come. The book is well written, and the illustrations are enjoyable. I read this book to a 3rd-grade class today (I'm a substitute teacher), and they enjoyed it. They laughed at several points, especially when Max rolled in fresh horse poop. I recommend it for 2nd grade through 5th grade. This book is a self-published book, but that does not mean that it is lacking in quality. Sandra Phillipson (the author) chose the self-publishing route mainly because she wanted Robert Takatch (the illustrator) to illustrate it, and she was afraid if she went through a publisher, she would lose that option. He knows these dogs and has done a nice job of conveying their personalities through his artwork. I tried to give this book 4 and a half stars instead of 4.
This is so funny!.......1999-12-31
My kids love this book! We met the author at a book signing and saw both this book and her other about their other dog, Annie. It is a great book that will make you and your kids howl out loud. These books are great - the other is Annie loses her leg but finds her way and is very special. Your kids will love these books and the illustrations in them.

Even with three stars, this is still a must read!.......1999-08-26
This is a book all warehouse supervisors, warehouse managers and logistics professionals should read. It puts a spin on logistics. If you could get your manager to read this, I guarantee they will look at logistics in a different light.
A poor middleground between The Goal and a textbook.......1999-06-30
When I read about "The Goose Chase" when it was first published, my first thought was "Finally - someone wrote about changing Logistics and Distribution like Eli Goldratt wrote about Manufacturing. I was wrong. The author never develops his material into a cohesive blend of entertainment and education. The education material is presented towards the end of the story as a bulleted narrative rather than woven into the fabric of the story. While I wasn't disappointed by the lessons presented I was disappointed by the presentation and the shortcomings of my expectations.
Yet Another story of manufacturing after the Goal........1999-05-25
I personally like Tompkins's writting style in all of his book. Good Chase is another story that capture the logistic problem in layman language, easier to understand. Like The Goal, this book tells the technique and idea through the story. Unlike The Goal, this book has more technical and focus on logistic/distribution system.

Customer Reviews:
A COOL, FUNNY MYSTERY!.......2005-02-18
I think this book is cool. It's a book of mystery and humor. At first I thought it was going to be about a goose stealing a donut but it ended out to be that the goose was trying to take the statue. This book is cool. I recommend it to kids of any age. Its a funny book and you will want to read it over and over and still find it funny and mysterious.
A fun mystery.......2005-02-17
I like this book because it is the best book I ever read.I think the other students should read this book. It is really
funny. It shows me to never give up.
Cool Plot!.......2005-02-15
It's Detective Donuts birthday, and they call him for a case becuase Professor Drake was missing. The goose was not Professor Drake's assistant. His birthday present was not what he subspected. This children's book is perfect for people who like mysteries mixed with humor.
Very Punny!.......2004-07-26
The illustrations in this book reveal the truth about what Detective Donut's package really
contains, who the Professor's assistant really is, and who really deserves the credit for
catching the criminal. Children will love knowing more about the action than does the
main character himself. This book may help students appreciate and pay more attention to
illustrations. It is also a good introduction to some commonly used idioms. Mouse's self-
satisfied humbleness is in marked contrast with Donut's foolish pride. Readers will have a
great time while learning these lessons.
Mom and Teacher
Whatley do you get when you mix Sam ... and donuts?.......2002-09-19
A delightful book that is as fun for you to read to your child as it is for them to listen to.
... The allusions to Bogart films and the really bad puns (visual and otherwise) serve to introduce your child to a whole new level of fun with language and, around every turned page there's something new.
... you'll find things in this book that will keep you as entertained as your child right up until the final page when the lights go out. ...
