Book Description
For more than a decade, Chris Johanson has been transforming day-to-day subject matter into simple stories in paintings that make bright, flat reference to illustration or folk art: The New York Times called their look "a down-on-its-luck, cheerfully abject cartoon style reminiscent of artists like William Wegman, Raymond Pettibon and Sue Williams." The same primary palette and angular compositions make Johanson's abstract works, which often take the form of geometric patterns or starbursts, into gleeful but sophisticated takes on Modernism. This, the artist's first major monograph, is also only the second title from Alleged Press, created by Aaron Rose of the influential Alleged gallery (1992-2002) and organizer of the groundbreaking traveling exhibition and accompanying catalogue, Beautiful Losers, in which Johanson featured prominently alongside artists such as Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Phil Frost, Spike Jonze and Harmony Korine. Please listen I have something to tell you about what is assembles Johanson's complete works to date, as well as several new pieces that have appeared nowhere else. Each spins a world from small, diffuse details: these are scenes where nude dancers, distracted pedestrians, forests, abstract rainbows and "good vibes" exist next to one another, on a sinister, comic edge that, even in its apparent brightness, can reflect the darkest places of human experience.

Book Description
For those who have lost a child to death, Jack Hayford provides compassionate answers to troubling questions such as, What happened to my baby after it died? Will I ever see my baby again-and will I recognize him? what happens if I've had an abortion? Does God have a reason for letting my child die? God's Word shines with hope in the dark night of human pain. God showed his tenderness when David lost the child he had with Bathsheba shortly after its birth. In his pain and grief, David spoke the word of revelation-reassuring word of God's truth-saying, "I will go to (my child) but he will not return to me" (2 Samuel 12:19-23). The freeing truth of the Word of God promises that, like David, you will hold your child again in heaven.
Customer Reviews:
Waste of money.......2007-01-29
This book is not for anyone that has lost a child due to medical problems of the child or the mother. It's aimed more at a woman that chose to have an abortion for some reason other than medical necessity. I was hoping for a spiritual book about the loss of a child that was beyond your control. But instead I got a book focused on easing the guilt of an abortion. I found the analogies very ignorant. Like when they compared the loss of a baby to catching an earlier flight at the airport.
Blessed assurance!.......2006-12-11
I'm so sorry that a few of you were not comforted by this book. It gave me truthes to rest on and hope that I will see my children again in heaven! Thank you Jack Hayford for taking the time to write and share your knowledge & compassion.
I'll Hold You in Heaven, by Jack Hayford.......2006-02-19
I have sent this book to a couple of women who have lost infants or had a miscarriage. I myself lost a baby years ago and did not have the privilege of this wonderful and encouraging book. I highly recommend it for mothers who have lost babies and/or who have had miscarriages.

Must Have.......2005-09-16
I recieved this book after my 3rd pregnancy loss as a companion to a pregnancy loss bible study workbook and I just loved it. It really helped me through the grieving process and guide me to hope through belief in God and heaven that my unborn child is taken care of and one day we will meet. I gained a whole new and healthy perspective on this sad chapter of my life and I believe without reading this book I might not have healed and moved on the way I did.
All about abortion loss.......2005-09-01
Although other types of loss are meanioned, it seems the goal of this book is to focus on abortion loss and how people who have lost a child through miscarriage, still birth or early infant loss should feel bad for those who aborted their children. Although I can see this being a good book if you have had an abortion and are mourning the loss of that child, I found this book very upsetting and not helpful at all in dealing with the death of my child (since his death had nothing to do with abortion, nor did I want to focus on how I could be sympathetic to someone who chose not to have their child while dealing with the sudden death of my very wanted child).

Book Description
This is the same course developed by the Foreign Service Language Institute to train diplomats and other government personnel to be fluent in foreign languages. An in-depth course for students intent on complete competency in speaking, understanding, reading and writing Portuguese, this program stresses development of conversational skill, vocabulary, pronunciation and mastery of grammar. The twelve cassettes emphasize use of the spoken language through intensive drills, and the book uses written exercises to help students master grammar and the written language. An ideal tool for language labs.
Customer Reviews:
For the serious student.......2007-05-26
If you really want to learn to speak this delightful language, this is the course for you. Admittedly, it can be dry (especially in the beginning) but if you stick with it you will be rewarded. I was surprised by how much I picked up and retained when I took the time to work through this course consistently and regularly. Supplement with video from Portuguese language websites to add some variety to your language study.
FSI Mastering Brazilian Portuguese, Vol. I (12 Cassettes).......2007-01-11
This U.S. designed Brazilian training course is mainly a conversation 600 page / 12 tape course. Ideal for someone with no previous foriegn language skills. It does not bog you down with grammer at the start. But slowly works you into it as you work your way throught the course with some writen execises near the end, when you have build up a good level of cofidence in the basics. A great way to start learning conversational Brazilian Portuguese before you go on your first trip, with a more advanced course available else where for about $200. This is what the U.S. government uses to train their diplomats.
For Those Wanting to Learn Portuguese.......2007-01-04
FSI Mastering Portuguese is a well organized presentation of basic information on the Portuguese language. It gives the user a more in depth understanding of the grammatical structures of the language than the Pimsleur tapes provide. However, I don't feel that this material works well by itself. I think that this material works best when the user has studied the Pimsleur Portuguese Tapes first and has some knowledge of the basic elements of conversational Portuguese. There is a major problem with the FSI tapes due to the incredibly poor quality of the recordings. Many of the recorded conversations were unintelligible. My daughter-in-law, a native born Brazilian who lived in Brazil for the first 26 years of her life, was unable to understand three of the twelve tapes. If you have never been exposed to the language before listening to these tapes, I think that you will find it very difficult, if not impossible, to understand a large portion of the material.
Excellent....if you really want to learn...........2006-02-23
This is an good product for those really trying to learn the language.
I have done "Pimsleur" and also a class at a school.. This product give you the ability to study and work on Pronunciation and Grammer, which you will not get in "Pimsleur" and some other programs..
It will be hard for someone in Brazil to understand you if you don't pronounce the simpliest words correctly....
***For someone whom is going on a quick trip and trying to learn a few words and phrases, (This is not the product for you!!),, try some of the quick learn product availiable...
Even taking a class, I could not pronounce some of the words correctly,, this programs helps, by having a book, they break down the words sound by sound which I didn't get in the class and (Pinsleur doesn't have a book, so you don't know what you are saying or if it's right because the speakers are speaking fast so you don't hear the Pronunication clearly..this is not just Pinsleur, but also a few other program). Pinsleur would be good to have after going through this product...
For someone trying to really learn the language this would be a great start then follow up with "Pinsleur" and then maybe a local portuguese class in your area....
And yes,,,stick with the cassettes..make sure your cassette player has reverse and fast forward....
Unparalleled........2005-10-13
Having delved into a number of home-study language courses, I can say without hesitation that this is the best I have ever seen. The approach to learning Portuguese is extremely effective. The student is given grammar points and new vocabulary in small, easy-to-understand doses and given plenty of practice in using and internalizing them. The course also gives considerable attention to the pronunciation of Portuguese vowels, such as the difference between "open" and "closed" vowel sounds. The amount of vocabulary in the course is not great, but the student is given such a strong command of grammar and pronunciation that constructing sentences is very easy, and new vocabulary can be picked up later. There is also a Portuguese Level 2 available (for $275, but well worth it!), which deals more extensively with vocabulary and more advanced grammatical structures. It is available from Audio-Forum and 101language.com on tape and CD (but steer clear of the CD version-it is set up so there is only one track per lesson and you cannot backtrack or review! Stick with the tapes.) After only three months of studying Level 1 and a few units of Level 2, I am amazed at how much I can say in Portuguese. If you want to learn this beautiful and fun language, the FSI courses are the best investment you can make.

Customer Reviews:
So much fun.......2006-07-14
I married the author, not least of all because I told her just after I proposed that "I love your view of life."
She's taken death head on and turned it into life; she's found joy in sorrow and opportunity in adversity. If all you pick up from reading this book is that, it's a five--how can it not be?
Here's to someone who did more than survive; she saw how rich and meaningful life is, and how much there is that we can laugh at every day.
No Hair in Omaha.......2005-08-15
I'm so glad I ordered this book. It absolutely reflects so many of my own experiences with cancer treatment.
Made my mom smile.......2000-01-31
I gave this to my mom, she laughed and was able to identify with the book. I read it too and enjoyed it. I think it depends on where you are in your treatment. If you need to laugh and are around others who won't or don't know how too, then this is a refreshing book. Sometimes when familes are dealing with this disease, they are afraid to laugh. And to see my mom smile, during a time when she knew what the outcome was, well it made all the difference in the world. It is a short book.
Not Now...I'm Having a No Hair Day.......1999-12-27
Disappointed. I found more laughter in my own personal experience with cancer treatment and hair loss than I found in these pages. I laughed out loud once. I expected more.
In contrast I found another book: No More Bad Hair Days to be very wise AND very funny. Just the ticket!
Very funny, yet frank depiction of hair loss.......1999-10-10
Ms. Clifford captures the humor of the highly emotional experience of being treated for cancer. She focuses mostly on hair loss (hence the title), but also on radiation and chemo. Laughter is great medicine, so I suggest you add this book to the treatment regimine of any woman going through cancer treatment.

I know the material is somewhat outdated. . ........2006-08-31
But the old information actually lays a good foundation for the principles of the new information. This book does help make the difference between passing and failing. It really helps with learning to eliminate the distractors even if you have no idea what the question is asking for or what the answer choices are.
Great Review Book.......2006-08-29
This book was key to passing boards!!! I did not use the book to memorize test questions, but help me direct where I needed to focus my studying. I took every test in the book and I recognized repeated questions for all sections, except the dental anatomy and occlusion. Even so, the book was still beneficial because it did help me see where I was weak and needed to put more time in my dental decks. Overall, it was a great guide and great tool that helped me pass part I boards.
good for last minute review.......2001-09-21
If you are looking for a book to learn the material covered on part two, this is not the book. But if you are willing to memorize every exam in this book the week before you take it, this book will prove to be very helpful. The questions were very similar and some were exactly word for word (on the computer test version, I dont know about the paper test version). my suggestion would be to study the way you normally would and the week before memorize every test in this book especially the pharm, oral surgey, oral medicine section. keep in my that you want to make sure you have the latest ADA guidlines on premedication to make sure the info is updated. The book may not get you the higest possible score but it may be the diffrence between passing and failing.Basically if you are caught in a jam and did not prepare and only have a week before the test this is the book.
A huge disappointment, is very outdated material........1998-12-09
I just took part II today! Rudman's book is not "new" in any sense. I wouldn't recommend this text to anyone, unless you plan to travel back to 1986 to take the test!

Book Description
I am the only
ME I AM
who qualifies as me;
no ME I AM has been before,
and none will ever be.
Three very different children reveal their individual personalities in a series of visual mini-adventures. Readers meet a mischievous tomboy who would rather roller-skate than wear a frilly dress, an inquisitive nature-loving boy, and an artistic ballerina who puts her own spin on Swan Lake. Finally, in a wild and funny climax, the three collide – only to discover a world full of unique and special “ME’s.”
With exuberant art and gleeful verse, this empowering celebration of individuality and diversity is just right for any young child discovering his or her own self – and the fun of being ME!
Customer Reviews:
Exuberant fun.......2007-04-25
"Me I Am!" by Jack Prelutsky and illustrated by Christine Davenier, celebrates the individuality in every child.
Based on a single poem by Prelutsky, "Me I Am!" follows the exuberant personality of several children as they show their stuff--baseball stances, roller skating, bike riding, insect-studying, ballet dancing, and dressing up. The kids are gleeful as they pursue their passions in a chaotic, kinetic kid-like style.
Here are the first eight lines of "Me I Am!":
I am the only ME I AM
who qualifies as me;
no ME I AM has been before,
and none will ever be.
No other ME I AM can feel
the feelings I've within;
no other ME I AM can fit
precisely in my skin.
"Me I Am!" is the perfect choice for a child who is feeling a little out of place. Best suited for children ages three to seven, "Me I Am!" encourages children to find the special within themselves. Christine Davenier's illustrations are simply wonderful--colorful, busy and full-of-life. Children will search for kindred spirits in these pictures. Davenier includes not only active, busy kids, but also the detritus of their lives. Books, frogs, flowers, items of clothing, and art supplies litter the pages, just as they do the lives of young children. Enjoy!

Book Description
By drawing on a very large number of German sources, many of them previously unpublished, Jack Sheldon throws new light on a familiar story. In an account filled with graphic descriptions of life and death in the trenches, the author demonstrates that the dreadful losses of 1st July were a direct consequence of meticulous German planning and preparation.
Although the Battle of the Somme was frequently a close-run affair, poor Allied co-ordination and persistence in attacking weakly on narrow fronts played into the hands of the German commanders, who were able to rush forward reserves, maintain the overall integrity of their defenses and so continue a successful delaying battle until the onset of winter ultimately neutralized the considerable Allied superiority in men and material.
Customer Reviews:
the german army on the somme 1914-1916.......2006-10-07
This book is a must for anyone interested in the Great War, I have read much on the Allied side but very little from the German army viewpoint. This is a wonderful book my only disappointment would be Sheldon's lack of maps. His maps were lacking, it would have been helpful to have some detail maps of the battle region.
Superb Research but organization could be better.......2006-07-03
Jack Sheldon, a retired British infantry officer, provides an original and ground-breaking look into the other side of First World War trench combat in The German Army on the Somme 1914-1916. Although the Somme Campaign has been described many times before - memorably by Martin Middlebrook - it has usually been from a British perspective. However, the author was able to make use of a wide variety of German-language materials, ranging from after-action reports, contemporary diaries and post-war memoirs to develop a composite view of how the German Army experienced combat on the Somme. Furthermore, this book is not only about the well-covered battles in July 1916 but ranges back to the early actions in this area against the French in 1914-15 and extends to the final actions of November-December 1916. This book is a must for any serious student of the First World War. Unfortunately, poor organization and inadequate maps have hindered the author's ability to deliver this treasure trove of information to the reader and make this book virtually unfathomable for the general reader.
The German Army on the Somme 1914-1916 is organized into nine chapters, two of which deal with the fighting in this sector in 1914-1915, then one that deals with activity in this area during January-June 1916, one chapter for 1 July 1916 alone, and then each succeeding chapter covers one month of 1916. Overall, this chronological organization works well for a campaign narrative of this length. The author also provides two short appendices on the German Army and sources used, as well as a detailed order of battle for all German divisions that fought on the Somme. This work rests on eyewitness accounts, most of which come from junior officers although there are a fair number of NCOs and common soldiers represented. Most of the accounts are from infantry soldiers, but there are a few from artillerymen and aviators. Many of these accounts are vivid and gripping, depicting trench warfare in all its facets. Some of the more interesting accounts cover night trench raids, escape and evasion from behind enemy lines, several desperate last-ditch stands and capture/escape. From the German point of view, we see the effects of Allied superiority in artillery and airpower that limit the German ability to move troops and supplies up to the front that sounds much like 1944. The German troops were also more impressed with French troops at this stage of the war than British, who were generally regarded as inexperienced amateurs. Throughout the book, the omni-presence of Allied artillery fire and the weakness of German artillery to respond is driven home again and again. It is also clear that the German infantryman had become a bomber rather than a rifleman by this point in the war; in one counterattack each soldier in a company is given ten hand grenades. The translations are generally very good and the author is to be applauded for assembling this vast assortment of accounts into a cogent format.
A review of the German Army on the Somme by Jack Sheldon.......2005-11-12
The book describes the Somme campaign up to the end of 1916 through the eyes of German officers and soldiers. Much of the text is apportioned to translations of German firsthand accounts that the author has sifted into a structure framed by his own commentary which provides the background information and supplementary knowledge to complete the picture. The first hand accounts are impressive in themselves for they have lost none of the vitality in translation by the author, himself a product of the German Staff College, and very much retain the expression and idiom that their German authors would have used. The eye witnesses record their experiences and events in factual terms which combine humanity with humour in even the darkest moments such as the medical party covering the dead in No Man's Land with quicklime and being sworn at when they accidentally start to cover the men of one of their own patrol parties too.
The chapters lead the reader chronologically through the campaign capturing the mood of the German defenders. The eye witness accounts record the artillery dominance and initial allied air superiority making all movement extremely hazardous and forcing the defenders to live deep underground with the inherent dangers of being buried alive by British delayed fuse 380 mm (15") heavy artillery shells. The German soldiers frustration at being pinned down is expressed in their longing for `Tommy' to attack and the opportunity to return the favour in kind. Despite this underlying tension the accounts reveal that when the two sides did come face to face in capture or injury the prevailing attitude by both sides was one of fair play.
The author sets the eyewitness accounts in the wider context of the strategy of General von Falkenhayn, Chief of the German General Staff, and the changes that were effected after his removal in August 1916. His policy of not giving up ground was unsustainable and with his replacement, Field Marshal von Hindenburg, came a concept albeit not immediately recognisable as such, of mobile defence. The text is well supported with footnotes and the Appendices contain further useful backgound information including a detailed description of the composition and structure of the German Army in 1914.
This book provides a fascinating insight into the German Army during this fiercely contested campaign and many of the characteristics and qualities of the German Army today are evident in the accounts of the servicemen of that time. The reader is whisked around the battlefield and installed in a German front row seat at the centre of the action. Whether historian or current observer, this vivid account is a study of Germans as much as a tribute to the soldiers of the Somme.

The year is 1815, and Europe's most unpopular (not to mention tiniest) empire-builder has escaped from Elba. In The Hundred Days, it's up to Jack Aubrey--and surgeon-cum-spymaster Stephen Maturin--to stop Napoleon in his tracks. How? For starters, Aubrey and his squadron have been dispatched to the Adriatic coast, to keep Bonapartist shipbuilders from beefing up the French navy. Meanwhile, one Sheik Ibn Hazm is fomenting an Islamic uprising against the Allies. The only way to halt this maneuver is to intercept the sheik's shipment of gold--because in the Napoleonic era, as in our own, even the most ardent of mercenaries requires a salary.
The Hundred Days is the 19th (and, we are told, the penultimate) installment of O'Brian's epic. Like many of its predecessors, it features a fairly swashbuckling plot, complete with cannon fire, exotic disguises, and Aubrey's suspenseful, slow-motion pursuit of an Algerian xebek. Yet it never turns into a mere exercise in Hornblowerism. Partly this is due to O'Brian's delicate touch with character--the relationship between extroverted Aubrey and introverted Maturin has deepened with each book, and even Aubrey's reunion with his childhood companion Queenie Keith is full of novelistic nuance: "They sat smiling at one another. An odd pair: handsome creatures both, but they might have been of the same sex or neither." Nor does the author focus too exclusively on his dynamic duo. Indeed, The Hundred Days is very much a chronicle of a floating community, which Maturin describes as "his own village, his own ship's company, that complex entity so much more easily sensed than described: part of his natural habitat."
Finally, O'Brian shows his usual expertise in balancing the great events with the most minuscule ones. Other authors have written about battles at sea, and still others have recorded the rapid rise and fall of Napoleon's fortunes after his escape from confinement. But who else would give equal time--and an equal charge of delight--to Maturin's discovery of an anomalous nuthatch? --James Marcus
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
In this, actor Robert Hardy's fourth reading from Patrick O'Brian's celebrated historical novels, series heroes Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin are in very different circumstances from when we first meet them. In Master and Commander, the first of the series, Aubrey is young and full of himself, and through Hardy's performance we can practically hear Aubrey's puffed-out chest. But in The Hundred Days, Aubrey is a commodore, famous throughout the British Empire for his naval exploits, and Hardy reflects the confidence that comes with those accomplishments. Meanwhile, his best friend, surgeon-spy Stephen Maturin, is wasting away as the audiocassette opens, in deep mourning for his recently deceased wife. But soon enough, both are pulled into great adventure again--in this case, Napoleon's final campaign--and the fate of the Empire rests on their ability to stop the fitting out of a new French fleet and to keep a shipment of gold from reaching a mercenary army. (Running time: three hours, two cassettes) --Lou Schuler
Book Description
Napoleon escapes from Elba, and the fate of Europe hinges on a desperate mission: Stephen Maturin must ferret out the French dictator's secret link to the powers of Islam, and Jack Aubrey must destroy it. Napoleon, like a vengeful phoenix, pursues his enemies across Europe. If he can corner the British and Prussians before their Russian and Austrian allies arrive, his genius will lead the French armies to triumph at Waterloo. In the Balkans, preparing a thrust northwards into Central Europe to block the Russians and Austrians, a horde of Muslim mercenaries is gathering. They are inclined toward Napoleon because of his conversion to Islam during the Egyptian campaign, but they will not move without a shipment of gold ingots from Sheik Ibn Hazm which, according to British intelligence, is on its way via camel caravan to the coast of North Africa. It is this gold that Aubrey and Maturin must at all costs intercept. In Algiers, Maturin navigates the violent currents of oriental politics and braves a desert journey that ends in a moonlit lion hunt high in the Atlas Mountains. Aubrey's quarry is a swift xebek of the Algerian corsairs: through the Straits of Gibraltar and into the Atlantic, he chases them to a bleak and apparently impregnable fortress island. Boldly conceived and brilliantly executed, The Hundred Days is Patrick O'Brian's most ambitious book yet, and surely one of his most rewarding. In this climactic-but not final!-adventure in the celebrated Aubrey/Maturin series, O'Brian succeeds in grafting his familiar, ever compelling principal characters to an historical event of tumultuous significance: the final defeat of Napoleon. The result is entertainment, excitement, and an intriguing exercise in "what if..." history, all encompassed in a magnificently rounded and complex work of fiction.

Great reader; poor editing of material........2007-02-20
We made the mistake of buying this ABRIDGED version of The Hundred Days, not noticing the FINE PRINT. The reader was very good, but the material truncated, choppy, and not "up to snuff." If you are a devoted fan of the Aubrey-Maturin stories, hurry up and read, yes, read the book. There's not a moment to lose!
The Hundred Days.......2007-01-18
Overhelming view of England day to day life during the last months of Napoleon power.
spoilers here; but DONT read other reviews if you haven't read this book.......2006-11-23
I have criticisms of many of the reviews here. Reviewers, type 'spoiler' for gosh sake. Have some decency; presumably review perveyors haven't read the damn thing. Anyway, to answer a few:
Dianna's death was absolutely necessary. Cripes, it sets up the next novel. You can see her death coming books ago.
I too have a problem with Bonden's death; I guess he felt the character tragic, and it was time to die. I think it was a stupid move. Bonden has as much right as Killick to continue on.
I think from some researching that O'Brian WAS ill through much of this book. However, it is still eminently endorsable.
The last two chapters I thought are very well done (O'Brian finishes a book better than anyone). And Jacob is a great character.
Masterfully Told Adventure.......2005-01-22
Patrick O'Brian's capacity to carry off nineteen installments in the Aubrey/Maturin series is nothing short of astonishing. There is no faulting O'Brian's ability to craft a richly detailed and captivating tale combined seamlessly with subtle plot twists and turns. The Napoleonic wars and the escape of Napoleon from Elba provide the backdrop to this incredible tale filled with action and political intrigue that completely captives the reader.
The personalities of the families, friends, and enemies left ashore by Aubrey and Mautrin permeate their lives at sea. If not considered in this light, the death of Mautrin's wife, Diana, would be a meaningless detail. This is also what allows the reader to become intimate with Aubrey and Mautrin, almost as if they are old friends. O'Brian is never callow or derivative. You should not expect these sea-going tales to be filled with swashbuckling adventure of which the singular point is action.
This nineteenth installment takes you across the Mediterranean and the Adriatic, and into combat against the French navy. It also takes you ashore into North Africa to intercept caravans carrying gold. This gold is intended for Muslin mercenaries who are disposed to support Napoleon. This is an outstanding installment to the series and most definitely can stand on its own.
Wonderful, but not as.......2005-01-08
I very much admire Partick O'brien's style and books, and I cannot say that this is even a mediocre book, but it is below his rest, merely for reasons of the plot. It is rather a shock to discover, in the first few pages, that Stephen's beloved Diana has died. At first I was annoyed that we heard about it from a complete stranger, but then I realized that it was really kinder than being with Stephen when he learned of it. I was and am still frusterated with Bonden's curt death, but in the next book there is somewhat of a recompense. As I said, a good book, one worth reading, but not as spectacular as the others in the series.

Book Description
Drawing on an unprecedented access to interviews, diaries, court records, and the criminal himself, Iis the inside story of Keith Hunter Jesperson, Oregons Happy Face Killer, who strangled eight innocent women in the 1990s. The murderers own words chronicle his evolution from angry child to sociopathic murderer, from tormentor of animals to torturer of women.Through Olsens profoundly disturbing account, the killer describes in harrowing detail how he played his death game;how he got away with it, taunting police after they incarcerated the wrong people; and finally how he was finally brought to face justice.

One-of-a-kind look inside the contradictory rationalizations of a serial killer.......2007-01-18
Keith Hunter Jesperson is an American serial killer who raped and murdered eight women while he worked as a long-distance trucker in the early 1990's. He is also notoriously media-hungry, known for having set up personal web pages with his delusional rants against the government during his early imprisonment, as well as starting a serial murderer pen pal club.
Author Jack Olsen recounts Jesperson's story in two parallel story lines. One is told in the first person, from Jesperson's point of view, starting with his first murder of a mentally incapacitated barfly through his multi-state crime spree and incarceration. The other story is an objective, journalistic look at Jesperson's childhood and life in the media.
This book is different from any other true crime story because Olsen allows Jesperson to speak uncensored (occasionally accompanied by footnotes with direct contradictions of Jesperson's version of events). Jesperson blames external factors--his father, women who are "bitches," society, bullies--for his desire to torture and kill both animals and women. Jesperson's narrative is an exercise in contradictions--he goes back and forth between loving and loathing his father, especially in their correspondence during his imprisonment. In one notable example, when Jesperson is suicidal and ready to turn himself over to authorities, he reflects on his experience with a woman with an infant he met outside a liquor store in Shasta, California. By his own account, Jesperson forced oral sex from the woman and roughhoused her against her will, then gave her a ride home when he was unable to kill her with ease. She filed charges against him. Several years later, at the end of his murderous career, Jesperson speaks of the incident as follows: "I thought about how hard it is to kill people. I snapped that Shasta woman's neck three times and she was still alive to lie about me." Jesperson seems to have forgotten that, by his own account of the encounter, he was violent and sexually abusive towards the woman, providing her ample reason to file a complaint with the police.
Author Olsen lets Jesperson's account stand on its own, for the most part, and the reader is left to note the inconsistencies and contradictions for him/herself. Jesperson enjoys the spotlight, and toyed with the media during his trial in such a way as to disrupt the prosecution's case and make the public doubt his sanity (he claimed responsibility for hundreds or murders and made other outrageous, exaggerated claims). By allowing Jesperson to speak freely, Olsen provides an unprecedented glimpse inside the mind of a rapist and serial killer--Jesperson speaks candidly about the "death game" he played with his victims, how he desired to stretch their death out as long as possible, and his loathing for women jumps off the page at the reader. Not for the faint of heart.
Apologia of a Serial Killer.......2005-03-08
I don't mean Apology, I mean Apologia, a formal, written explanation of actions. In this case the Happyface Killer tries to explain how he became a serial killer because of 1) his family; 2) society; 3) women and 4) alcohol. This list is not exclusive nor in any specific order. I was rather tired of his self serving whining after the first chapter and it would have been better if there had been some balancing exposition from Mr. Olsen-- a writer I generally respect.
This is certainly an antidote to the Hannibal Lector myth of the superior serial killer. Jesperson is a remarkably banal sort of killer-- focused on sex and money. Probably the most queasy making part of his story involves his claims of being a doting father intertwined with graphic scenes of brutality.
Definitely recommended for those who want to romanticize the breed.
Through the eyes of a Killer.......2004-10-29
Jack Olsen's book "I" takes the reader into the maddening world of a serial killer. Keith Hunter Jesperson, known as the Happy Face Killer, was responsible for the death of eight women over a span of several years in the early 1990s. With "I" the reader gets into Jesperson's head and sees the world of killer, from Taunja Bennet to his last murder.
By writing this book from a first person stance, Olsen's allows Jesperson to take the drivers seat in this narrative. All the killer's thoughts, feelings and visceral reactions are recorded in a very straight forward manner. Olsen shows Keith Hunter Jesperson for what he really is through his own web of words: an aggressive serial killer. The background information on Jesperson is provided in third person, and it fills in any questions about Keith Jesperson's past. With insight from his father and siblings, we can follow the path of a killer from childhood to incarceration.
My only complaint is that the efforts of the police and their criminal investigation is left out of the book. But, that wasn't the intent of this novel, it was to get us into a killers head, and in that respect Olsen succeeds.
Stunning!.......2004-06-08
I have amassed quite a collection of true crime books in my life. Aside from Helter Skelter, this may be my favorite true crime book. Aided by a very forthcoming killer, Jack Olsen displays a wealth of knowledge on his subject. While I found the brevity of chapter to be discouraging, the contend creates an exceptional product. While some authors in this genre continually repeat themselves, Olsen tells a seamless story with a continual supply of fresh information.
Keith Hunter Jesperson is the "Happy Face Killer". He earns this name through his washroom stall vandalism and letter writing signature. Jesperson's killing spree involves eight women. In the case of his first murder, others went to jail for his crime. His final death toll could have been larger if he had not killed his "fiance". The story is unique because the killer is a truck driver. This facet of the story gives unique insight into the life of a truck driver. The murders are spread through a large area with victims that a largely prostitutes. Jesperson places much of the blame for his murders on his father. The childhood stories depict his father as a manipulative, abusive alcoholic. Even from the stories in the present, his father seems this way. If the stories he describes are true, his father does hold some responsibility for his son's crimes.
True crime fans must add this book to their collection. The stories are detailed and give insight into the acts of a serial killer which have never been seen before.
