Book Description
The Herdmans plus Halloween have always spelled disaster
Every Halloween, the six Herdman kids steal candy, spray-paint other kids, and take everything that isn't nailed down. And this year promises to be the same, until the Mayor decides to up and cancel Halloween. True, that means there'd be no Herdman trouble to contend with, but that also means no candy, no costumes, and no trick-or-treating! Is it possible that the Herdmans themselves could make what looks like a horrible Halloween into the best one ever?
Customer Reviews:
another funny one from the same author.......2007-01-09
Those of you who have read the original Herdman saga, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" will enjoy hearing from the Herdmans again. Yes, there are some unrealistic parts of the story, but that was true of the first story, too. This one is funny and enjoyable, without being too long. A nice addition to your Herdman library.
...a spooktacular tale featuring some tricks, and quite a few treats..........2006-10-05
It's a known fact that whenever there's trouble, the six Herdman kids are behind it. Lose a pair of pants? It's the Herdmans. Find your window broken? The Herdmans are behind it. Find yourself painted green? Blame the Herdmans. It never gets old. Or, at least it never got old before. But this year is different. This year, as everyone is preparing for Halloween, and loading up on candy, the Mayor does something drastic to protect the town from the Herdmans...he cancels Halloween. Sure, without Halloween, the Herdmans are sure to keep their distance from everyone, and cease from stealing the candy that every child has collected. But without the Herman's to contend with, it would also mean that candy is banned for the season. And Halloween just isn't Halloween with a heaping bag full of goodies that will rot your teeth and make you sick. Now, Halloween has turned into a horrible, boring event that will take place at school, with a bunch of parents dressed up as witches and ghouls, ghosts and monsters. Instead of candy, there'll be donuts. Instead of trick-or-treating, there'll be supervised bobbing for apples. This is sure to be the worst Halloween ever, Herdmans or not. But when the lights go off, suddenly everything changes, and everyone begins to wonder whether the Herdmans have what it takes to pull off a spooktacular Halloween that will leave the town cheering.
I don't know how Barbara Robinson does it, but she manages to turn every holiday from a bad experience into the best day ever, and all with the help of the Herdman clan. The Herdmans are enjoyable characters, who, regardless of their bad behavior, knack for pulling pranks everywhere they go, and ability to steal just about anything, obviously have a soft spot, and it is showcased in Robinson's Halloween effort THE BEST HALLOWEEN EVER. Robinson shows a different side of the Herdmans in this particular installment into their trying life, allowing readers to see the kindness that they can emanate, when they feel the need. If you're looking for a spooktacular tale this Halloween featuring some tricks, and quite a few treats, look no further than THE BEST HALLOWEEN EVER.

Ghosts and Goblins Delight.......2006-09-24
While the Herdmans wrecked lots of the town, they manage to disguise themselves to make the most boring school Halloween party the BEST Halloween party when they give all the children a room full of candy. Funny and surprising this book was a ton of fun for a Saturday read. Makes me want to read other stories about the Herdmans.

Corduroy or a CareBear in Green Overalls?.......2002-08-25
First, the good things about this little Halloween book, and there are several. The illustrations are cute and colorful and introduce little ones to the festivities that take place at Halloween like costume parties, bobbing for apples, carving jack-o-lanterns and going trick-or-treating. The main character, a little bear named Corduroy is as sweet as can be and is very selfless and compassionate when he discovers that one of his friends does not have a costume for the Halloween party. Good-hearted Corduroy promptly gives up his own costume that he has painstakingly produced for himself. In the end, this clever Corduroy comes up with an alternative for himself by whisking the soiled tablecloth off the party table. It's a nice story, although not very exciting in any way, and very little kids will probably enjoy it.
Now, for the faults and there are few. This book is BASED ON the Corduroy stories written and illustrated by the late Don Freeman, a wonderfully talented and original writer and artist. The Corduroy in this book is most decidedly NOT the Corduroy we have come to love in Don Freeman's books. He lacks the depth of expression, the curiosity and hapless penchant for troubles that our beloved Corduroy, born in 1968, has. This Corduroy is more like a CareBear in his goody-goody ways. A pair of green overalls does not a Corduroy make! I'd much rather remember him as a plucky little guy who finds a loving little girl to care for him than to see him as a homeowner, shopper, party-planner, host and crises solver.
This book is a pretty cute Halloween tale but it could fly on its own with any generic teddy bear and it should have left Corduroy safe and sound in our hearts and minds, just the way he was.
Corduroy is always a classic..........2001-10-27
I have followed Corduroy's adventures from the time he was discovered in the department store. He is adorable no matter where he is...or what he's doing. Being a children's book author and illustrator, I always admire those in my field who craft their stories with such warmth and charm. It's unfortunate there aren't more Corduroy characters around. He is truly a favorite.

Book Description
The worst kids in the history of the world! Featured in 3 unabridged recordings narrated by Grammy-nominated Elaine Stritch.
THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER: When the Herdmans storm Sunday school and take over the annual Christmas pageant, everyone braces for the worst. But no one is prepared for what really happens when the rottenest kids in the world take over the greatest story ever told. It's a pageant full of surprises for everyone -- including the Herdmans themselves.
THE BEST SCHOOL YEAR EVER: When anything goes wrong at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, from the hexing of Bus Six to the mysterious disappearance of the kindergarten gerbil, it's sure to have a Herdman behind it. Then a school project forces the students to think of compliments for all their classmates -- including the Herdmans. Is it possible that behind their outrageous behavior there may be something good about this crazy clan after all?
THE BEST HALLOWEEN EVER: The mayor, who has had it with the Herdmans and their shenanigans, has decided to cancel the town's Halloween. Instead, Halloween will take place at school, but there won't be any candy! And what's Halloween without trick-or-treating and candy? The Herdmans know the answer to this question, and in a hilarious turn of events, manage to turn the worst Halloween ever into the best Halloween ever!

Customer Reviews:
A fun activity.......2007-02-21
My three year old son loves this book! We have so much fun looking through all of the pictures and finding the hidden objects. It has been a great tool for increasing concentration.
Not for little ones.......2007-01-04
I got this book for my 3-year old granddaughter as a Halloween present and was so disappointed in it that I bought a substitute gift. It is a very difficult seek-and-find picture book; not a storybook. Definatley not a "read with me" book! The pictures are very complex and impossible to solve. Save your money!
Not-too-Spooky Colorful Fun.......2006-09-26
My five-year-old LOVES this book. Unlike the I Spy titles, the objects to hunt for are shown as pictures, which means she doesn't need anyone to read the text to her. The hunts are definitely easier than those in I Spy as well (heck -- I Spy is a bit of a challenge for ME).
The pictures are colorful and highly detailed, full of deliciously creepy Halloween icons. The emphasis is definitely on fun Halloween activities -- parties, amusement parks, parades, a visit to Grandma -- rather on anything really frightening.
I have only two quibbles: first, the maze in fun house isn't solvable. Would it have been so hard to make it a maze the child could do? And second: the objects to find are just pasted into the pictures, sometimes rather clumsily, rather than drawn in and "hidden" in clever or logical places. So you'll have a candy bag superimposed on a car door or a lollipop floating around next to a balloon. Neither of these bother my daughter at all, though -- she just enjoys paging through and finding the objects again and again, and spotting the "batty bats" flying around each page. It's not be-all and end-all of picture puzzle books, but it is a rousing good time.
where's waldo...with a cute twist.......2001-07-14
I'm not sure why this book claims to be appropriate for baby-preschool ages. On the back of the book, it has a reading level 2 clearly marked on it. We even bought it from the Scholastic book forms the kids got in second grade.
At any rate, this book is good for a variety of ages, which is a definite plus when you have children of different ages. Little ones can help spot the pictures. Older ones can read the story as well as spot the pictures.
My family and I did this as a 'group' project. Each child would scan thru the page and try to find all the pictures first. There are 11 pictures, so the week around Halloween, we'd pull the books out and try to find all the pictures. It made the waiting time for Halloween go by and it also let them enjoy Halloween just a bit longer.
John Speirs' books are a lot of fun and I highly recommend them!
My 4 year old LOVED this one!.......2000-10-31
My 4 year old son had the best time trying to find the hidden pictures in this book. He wanted to look at it every night before bed for about 2 weeks. The book has lots of hidden pictures that you and your child will both have lots of fun finding! My 2 year old even liked it! We're going to get other books like this by the same author for sure!
