The Fine Art of Small Talk.......2007-05-14
this is a great training and useful to all who are either fearful of speaking to other people in general or as debra described herself for people who just do not know how to move conversations along.
Not much there.......2007-04-18
A slim book with a lot of white space. Wish I had read the book over a cappuccino at a local bookstore rather than actually buying it.
This tape really helped.......2007-01-31
I'm sorry to see so many bad reviews, so I'm taking my first step into cyberspace reviews. I can't speak for the book, but the tape made a real difference in my life. I was painfully shy as a child and teenager and had no clue how to interact with groups until I started teaching myself by observing others at college. I'd gotten better by my mid-20s, but I still dreaded parties where I knew no one or other social gatherings. My attitude was, "I hate small talk, give me something 'real' to talk about."
When I was hired as an executive director of a nonprofit in my mid-30s, I realized I had to teach myself how to work a reception and represent my organization comfortably and competently. This tape gave me the tips I needed, like: Walking in taking responsibility for making others feel comfortable puts you in a better mindset. And seek out the other people who are standing alone -- they'll appreciate you saving them, as they are probably as uncomfortable as you. So - give this a chance.
Good, but not great.......2007-01-03
A little bit boring to read, 'cause it repeats itself a lot
Great Book.......2006-08-24
This books gives great tips and suggestions on how to start conversations. It even give you sample ice breakers. Good book to have and keep around to refresh your small talk skills.

Book Description
People admire those who seem to have the innate ability to enter an unfamiliar social situation and begin to engage others in conversation. These people seem to have what is often called "the gift of gab." Others wonder to themselves, "How do they do it?" The assumption that most people make is that the ability to make successful small talk (i.e. "the gift of gab") is somehow a natural ability that one is born with. The truth of the matter is that the ability to make successful small talk is not an innate ability but an acquired skill. And like any other acquired skill, it can be learned, enhanced, and perfected if you have the right information and the determination to do so. With this guiding philosophy, The Pocket Guide to Making Successful Small Talk is designed to provide you with all the information you'll need to learn, enhance, and perfect the skills necessary for making successful small talk. And this information is presented in a manner that will ! give you the determination to put it into practice immediately and continuously. In The Pocket Guide, the author explains the purpose of small talk, discusses small talk apprehension, , and elaborates on the role your body, mind, and emotions can play in hindering your efforts to make successful small talk. To help you understand the underlying dynamics of small talk, there are case studies illustrating what you should and shouldn't do when making small talk, the basic formula and golden rules for making successful small talk, and a discussion of some of the more specific barriers to making small talk. To facilitate your efforts to make small talk, the author explains how to make successful small talk in some of the most common situations (e.g. at parties, on first dates, while networking) and discusses making small talk in the context of changes in technology (e.g. chatting on the Internet) and cultural diversity (e.g. talking with people from different countries.) Finally, he explains how you can master the art of successful small talk by making ! it a part of your day-to-day routine. Most importantly, throughout The Pocket Guide, you are provided with a variety of easy-to-use, practical tips on how to make successful small talk with anybody anytime anywhere about anything. And because opportunities to make small talk can occur with anybody anytime anywhere about anything, all this valuable information is presented in a convenient, efficient, easy-to-use guide that will fit a pocket, purse, briefcase, bookbag, backpack, glove compartment, desk drawer, or travel kit so that you can refer to it whenever opportunities to make small talk arise. Because this valuable information is presented in such an easy-to-use format, you will have little difficulty finding the determination to implement this information in your efforts to learn, enhance, and perfect your small talk skills. With such information and determination, don't be surprised if people start to ask you "Where did you get the ability to talk to people so successfully? Were you born with that gift?" Even if they don't come right out and ask you, they are probably thinking about it, as you once did. This is part of what makes the art of making successful small talk so fascinating and so important.
With this in mind, welcome, and let's get started with your efforts to master the art of making successful small talk!

try it you'll like it!.......2007-01-15
great information - works like a charm with a little practice!
Not what I expected.......2006-07-16
The quality and cost of the book was quite disappointing. The pages that were stapled in the book were out of order and other pages were falling out. The first impression was not good.
The content was "ok" but not practical for the introverts that struggle to begin a conversation. If you want to spend this amount on a communication book and learn important details in communicating, I suggest ordering Conversationally Speaking that lists how others perceive you as you converse and how to read others' "signals" during a conversation. Another suggestion is How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less that also gave better advise on conversations than this pocket guide.
What Really Works.......2005-12-09
I find books like this help you with opening remarks, like simple one-liner ice breakers. OK, so they feed you some lines and then what are you supposed to talk about? If you don't know many people at the event, it's hard to come up with something interesting that won't end with you red-faced, or with your foot firmly in your mouth. I find online knowledge services like Agogus.com are very helpful in this respect, more that these kinds of books. I have more confidence to start a conversation, now that I have a wide knowledge of all kinds of topics. It's even fun to go to holiday parties, not a pain like it used to be.
Decent but there are better books available on the subject.......2005-11-26
I purchased this book, along with "Conversationally Speaking" by Alan Garner and "How To Start a Conversation and Make Friends" by Don Gabor. I bought all three books because I find that reading multiple books on a subject helps me remember the subject's key points more easily.
All three of these books cover the exact same topics, such as listening (instead of waiting for your turn to speak) and asking questions that promote conversation, along with various other skills meant to improve your conversational ability. Of the three books, Carducci's book is the shortest and most poorly organized, and the language used is rather awkward and difficult to read. The book also contains a surprisingly large number of minor grammatical and punctuation errors. It is also the most limited in scope, focusing exclusively on small talk, but without offering more information on this subject that Gabor's and Garner's books. This is a problem, since anybody looking to improve their ability to make "small talk" is probably really looking to improve their conversation skills, and good conversation includes more than just "small talk".
I read Carducci's book last, and I would have given it a more favorable review if I had not read Gabor's and Garner's books first. If you only buy one book on conversation skills, I would suggest Gabor's "How to Start a Conversation and Make Friends." If possible, buy both Gabor's and Garner's books, I feel that reading both together really helped improve my conversation skills! Garner's book is a bit more in-depth, while Gabor's is better organized and somewhat easier to read. I suggest avoiding this book entirely, since the other two books are both much more valuable, as well as slightly less expensive.
Confidence builder.......2005-10-18
When I purchased this book, I didn't think I knew much about this topic. Small talk was something I have always felt uncomfortable making, and I hoped this book might help. And in a way I never expected, it did...
What I realized while reading this book is that I knew way more about making small talk than I ever realized. I've been making small talk my whole life, using the exact stratagies outlined in the book. I just never gave names to the various stages of a conversation or thought about why some conversation fail and some don't the way this book does. Realizing how ingrained much of this books advice already is in my "small talk" has given me the confidence to do it more often. And I now have an expectation of success, which makes a big difference. So far, I like the results. This book has really worked for me.

Customer Reviews:
non-recommendable book.......2007-03-09
I will positively be heistate to recommend this to other probable buyers becuase this book is composed of contents it is not helpful to learn English expression.
In addition, this book loses my common and prevalent idioms.
I don't like to recommend all of you to get this book.
Good for those who only recently arrived to the United States.......2006-04-30
...and also for those who have at least advanced or intermediate skill in English language. In my case I bought this book hoping to enrich my general conversational vocabulary. I have NOT achieved my personal goal since the book is full of most simple phrases that are very quickly learned from daily communication by anyone who lived in the US for more than 2 months (Thanks! Sorry 'bout that! See you! How you've been? and similar.)
However, I found this book to be particularly helpful in terms of idioms and expressions that are otherwise not clear to a non-native English speaker even in context (drop the ball, gone out the window, let's touch base tomorrow, and similar phrases.)
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is new to the country and needs to master the American slang and daily communication.
That is just what I (a ELS student) Want !!!.......2006-01-05
I watched a lot of American Movies and Sitcoms. There are too much expressions that I cannot really understand ~! They are all composed of simple words, but when they are together, I just cannot get it. Like "Might as well","who do you think you are kidding",and tons of others....This book explains a lot to me. The entries in this book are really used very frequently in American Movies and on TV. I heard almost all of them before. It teaches me much more than my ESL classes !! ELS students ~buy it and Enjoy it !!
Good for Foreign Adults.......2005-09-13
I have very intelligent adult students who are trying to improve their English. Most of them are from East Asian backgrounds. This book is very much enjoyed by my students because it gives them an insight into phrases that people use around them often. Most people don't realize how much they use these phrases. Moreover, we don't realize how strange they sound to non-native speakers.
A reference book.......2004-05-09
The author is neither mad nor ashamed. This reference work is
filled with expressions that perplex ESL students, yet do not
often appear in dictionaries of slang or idiomatic English.
This is a reference work, not a teaching textbook. I think the first edition appeared in 1991, and the title has been in demand in the ESL market since it first appeared. Native speakers may not find the entries remarkable, but learners of English do. Check the sample pages. It may serve your needs.
Cheers, R. Spears, the author.

PR pundits and business owners Friedman and Yorio tackle the fear factor of women who want to quit their day job and build a business. They ask, "Are you the girl to run the show?" They answer with a sassy list of pros and cons ("You will be able to get to your child's school play, but you will think about money all the time.") and with tough questions ("Could you negotiate a reasonable rent with an unreasonable landlord?)
Every chapter is packed with interviews, charts, quizzes and witty directives about self-employment. Among their greatest hits: what's in a name, choosing logos, ten inspiring business chick flicks, legal eagles, business speak and visibility in professional associations. Friedman and Yorio sweat the small stuff. They explain, for example, why you shouldn't eat spaghetti at a business lunch and how to ask revealing questions of a potential employee or computer consultant. The authors' premise, "let women be women" is most compelling when they explore the unique challenges women face--from finding female role models to being a boss "without being a bitch."
They are on shakier ground with the arguable assumption that all women share distinct gender styles and strengths. This type casting and the "girl friend" tone can sometimes belittle the book's smart and strategic ideas for becoming the boss. Still, it is hard to imagine a more readable, practical book about the challenges of being in charge. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Geared toward the unique challenges faced by self-employed businesswomen,
The Girl's Guide to Starting Your Own Business offers solutions and advice for handling a range of issues, including how to write a business plan, how to secure funding, and how to hire (and fire) employees. Caitlin Friedman and Kimberly Yorio share practical information drawn from their own extensive experience in the public relations, marketing, and consulting industries. Their concise and engaging advice is explained through entertaining tips, lists, and quizzes that speak directly to women who are dreaming of starting, or have already started, their own businesses.
Customer Reviews:
Good on inspiration, low on the details.......2007-05-14
The Girl's Guide is an inspirational how-to book for women entrepreneurs, sprinkled with stories of actual women business owners, self-quizes, and lists of movies/music/books. But in giving a big overview, it is short in details and specific how-to's. And, by trying to be everything to everyone, it is not specific to any particular kind of business ... traditional brick-and-mortar vs internet, service vs. product, solopreneur vs employee-based, etc.
Pros:
-Written for women, addressing unique issues, such as dressing for business meetings and the problems of being "nice"
-Give a big, high-level overview of the opening of a business
Cons:
-Assumes that to grow you will need employees (not true in the age of virtual assistants and outsourcing) and a long business plan (not true in the age of the one page business plan)
-Assumes your web designer will know about web/email marketing and sales (many web designers are graphic designers, not marketing gurus)
-Assumes you will want a brick-and-mortar type-business, not an internet-only home business (and that if you start out working from home, it's a way to save money, not a business style)
-Gives some financial, legal, internet, and marketing advice that is out of date (i.e., states now permit one-person LLCs)
If you want a book specific to your new business, or that gives you a step by step, specific guide, this is not the book for you.
If you want a book to inspire you to open your own business (especially if you want a traditional, brick-and-mortar, employee-based, consulting business that you want to grow to be big), buy this book.
Get it girl!.......2007-03-13
I think this book is a great guide to starting your business.
Inspiring!.......2007-03-06
I really liked this easy to read inspiring book that interviews a lot of real life women business owners. It was very fun to read while I was planning my own business and gave me some things to think about too. I now have my own LLC and plan to release my first product within a couple months *I hope* ^_^
So you want to own your own business?.......2007-02-10
This book was THE book that inspired me to start my own business. Written in a fun and informative style, Caitlin and Kimberly cover all the basics on how to get started from setting up your business as an LLC or LLP, to taxes, staffing and marketing. They also feature the stories of real-life entrepreneurs which are inspiring and educational. I have recommended this book to many friends: including male ones.
GREAT, packed with info, good resources, gets you thinking........2007-02-02
Going through this book I discover new topics I need to cover in the planning stages and in my business plan. So far it's really been an informative great read. Start with this book! This book is really for anyone starting out. Has some helpful suggestions on free resources and places to go for further info (e.g. for the bus. plan, etc). Good luck in your new venture!

I first read these books to children when I was babysitting, many moons ago. Children absolutely love them! The colors and pop ups are visually stimulating. The stories are easy for children to follow, and anticipate! Little boys in particular like the stories, and in my experience they are the first books they choose.

Absolutely Vital to a Good ESL Program.......2002-01-22
From the first moment I heard these everyday conversations put to classic jazz music, I knew that I would be using Jazz Chants as long as I was involved in ESL. As the author of American Accent Training, I use Jazz Chants in conjunction with Dr. Seuss for a well-rounded accent program. The songs are catchy, and students find that the rhythms and patterns become ingrained in their memories far more effectively than with text study. They are constantly amazed that "Americans really talk this way!" and "I can actually hear the speech music!" Mere words cannot convey what a wonderful series of exercises this is. Carolyn Graham is a musical genius.
Very American!.......2000-12-09
These chants not only demonstrate the intonation and rhythm of American English, they are American culture at its best. If you have been speaking American English all your life, you hear yourself and laugh because the small talk chants are so typically American. I have used the chants and worksheets with beginners and intermediate students in the upper elementary grades. The students have enjoyed them and the worksheets that go with them. At first, it's hard for everyone, but the students get the hang of it and look forward to new ones.
Exellent teaching pronunciation book for ESL/EFL learners.......2000-05-01
I am a Korean MATESOL student studing in the US. I have heard that Grahamn's Jazz chant is very good ESL source, and I have used her chants in my classes in Korea. The Jazz chant is very helpful in teaching rhythm and flow that English cotains. However the Jazz chants I have used before was just chants. They didn't have any guide lines. However, what drove me to attempt to write review of this book is that while I was looking for a book for pronunciation micro teaching, I happened to find this book in the library(Actually I didn't know this book was what my professor recommanded in class until I went over my notebook couple of minutes ago!) This book is very well organized and presents clear lesson points. It is definately wonderful to teach oral skills to English learners with fun. Not only does this book present chants but also has written exercises. I strongly recommand this book to ESL/EFL teachers.

Talk to Me: Conversation Tips for the Small talk challenged.......2007-03-08
Great book, good shape. Thanks.
Nothing useful or path breaking in this book.......2005-09-29
Title of the book is misleading. I thought it would help me with "small talk" but there are only 4-5 pages about that. ALL of the book is common sense stuff with nothing special to help you in small talk situations.
Useful and Interesting.......2004-07-16
This is definitely one of the best books on conversation and social interaction--and specifically, on small talk and dealing with those aspects of social life that are integral in getting what you want and creating satisfying relationships. The book is brief, but packed with good ideas and very enjoyable to read.
