Pizza for the Queen.......2005-11-15
"Magnifico!" exclaims Queen Margherita as she enjoys a slice of pizza made especially for her by Raffaele Esposito. Based on a true story, Castaldo magnificently describes the story of Raffaele, the finest pizza maker in Napoli, who is requested by the queen to make a pizza. Raffaele searches the city for the optimal ingredients for the perfect pizza. With inspiration from the red, white, and green of the Italian flag, Raffaele creates a pizza fit for a queen, appropriately dubbed "Pizza Margherita." This delectable story is enhanced with Potter's vivacious illustrations that capture the appetizing quest of Raffaele. With close attention to detail, the intricate pictures are able to express the Italian culture in the late 1800's. The story, as well as the recipe included in the book for "Pizza Margherita," will satisfy children's appetites everywhere.

not yet ready.......2007-02-15
This book was too advanced for the just-turned-3-yr-old niece who I bought it for. However, the grandmother and aunt who read it to the child were very entertained by the story and writing. In a few more months, I'm sure the child will enjoy this book, too, and then it will get 5 stars.
How "petes ah" became the name for pizza way back when........2007-02-03
This was a fun book. It had me chuckling from time to time. It actually could be used as a rough draft for a humorous speech project at Toastmasters. I suppose the fact that I would only consider it a "rough draft" for a Toastmasters talk is why it only got a 4 star from me. The illustrations are good and they don't detract from the text. But the text could have been better.
The story is about a young woman whose father used to be a king. She enters a contest where the winner gets to be a real queen's daughter-in-law. Funny thing about the story is that the young woman wins the contest, but decides she doesn't want to be a princess after all. In winning the contest she created what we know as pizza today.
I would have liked the book better if the story had been better planned out. When reading the story I felt like some of the content was inserted as an afterthought. As I read the book I felt a little like I was on a roller-coaster ride. It had peaks and valleys. I think kids will enjoy having this book read to them. And I know they will like seeing the pictures as it is read. 4 stars!
Fun fractured fairy tale.......2005-12-21
I bought this book for my 5 1/2 year old daughter and she really likes it. The story is very readable and fun. I do agree with another reviewer that it is for older children, maybe ages 6-10 instead of 4-8. There is quite a bit of text on each page (though not TOO much) and it has some subtle ideas that are beyond my 4 year old son's capabilities. He has sat and listened to his share of princess books in his life, but he's not ready to sit through this one. Still, the story is really cute and my daughter thinks it is GREAT. The pictures are not your typical frufru girly illustrations either, but I think that makes it visually interesting and I love the bright colors that the illustrator used. In all, it is a success in our house.
Love the story!.......2005-09-13
Love the modern day tale of the Princess and the Pizza. Cute!
Clever Princess Wins the Day.......2005-08-02
The Princess and the Pizza by Mary Jane Auch is a delightful tale of a clever princess who uses her wits to solve her problems on her own without the help of fairy godmothers or seven strange little men. The colorful & whimsical illustrations by Herm Auch are the perfect backdrop for this fun story.
