5 out of 5 stars A humorous and nostalgic look back.......2006-12-22

Back in the eighties, I considered the "Bloom County" strip to be the best cartoon feature of the time. Therefore, reading this book was a humorous and nostalgic look back to another time in America. There were references to presidency of Ronald Reagan and the Iran Contra scandal, the nuclear arms race, the evil empire of the Soviet Union and the first president Bush.
For one moment, I forgot the time context of the strip. On page 50 boy genius Oliver W. Jones has created a teleportation device. In the final caption of the segment, his father asks him, "Could you put George Bush into the White House?" To which he responds, "OH, WHY DO YOU ALWAYS EXPECT THE IMPOSSIBLE FROM ME?!" At first, I thought the reference was to George W. Bush, but then realized it was about George Herbert Walker Bush. I laughed at that one because it certainly could be applied to both.
Cartoon strips provide us with humor and a cynical look at the political and social forces of the time. Therefore, if you have little knowledge of the events of the eighties, then you will have a difficult time understanding many of the cartoons. However, if you lived through them and were old enough to be politically acute, then you will enjoy this book as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars Told You!.......2005-03-12

Ok for you Get Fuzzy fans, this is what I am talking about. On the cover of this collection we see Berkly Breathed using the Bruce Springsteen album collection set(from Christmas 1987) for inspiration. Take a look at the cover, Are You Bucksperienced just plagerizes this idea.

5 out of 5 stars Bloom County 4.... or 5.... depends on...........2004-06-16

Okay - Bloom County Babylon, the 4th Bloom County book was really a compilation of material contained in the first 3 books. So.... depending on if you want a chronological collection of the BC Strips, or to complete ALL of the BC Books, this is either the 4th or 5th volume of Bloom County, and Berkeley Breathed is still in high-gear producing the funniest 'toon strip I've ever read. And by "funny" I mean laugh-out-loud, roll on the floor, tears streaming down my face, people coming into the room to see "WHAT are you laughing at?!!!?" kind of laugh.

In "Billy and the Boingers" Steve Dallas, the sleazy womanizing ambulance-chasing lawyer, finally decides that even HE has had it with defending murderers and child abusers. Bill the cat inspires him to hold auditions for a "New high-profit heavy-metal rock band". Requirements are only "Need to know 3 chords and be able to grimace musically".

Along the way Opus the Penguin gets engaged to sweetie Lola Granola, and the new Heavy Metal Group "Death-Tongue" makes their pitch in Los Angeles to recording companies, ending with a memorable visit backstage at an Ozzy Osbourne concert - back when Ozzy was the "Elvis of Heavy Metal". Back in Bloom County Steve discovers that he must give up cigarette smoking or his life expectancy is 6 months. He has Opus tie him to a chair where he is the model of self-control for 38 whole minutes before he breaks down and tells Opus "Get me a (...) cigarette before I stick you in a blender". Things get worse from there.

As in the previous volumes Breathed does a fantastic job of creating a surreal universe full of people and critters that we care about, but who are most importantly..... funny.

5 out of 5 stars B.B. just kept getting better.......2004-03-27

Bloom County was without a doubt the most insightful, funny, and beloved comic strips of all time. It's rabid following has never gotten over the disappearance of Opus and the Gang from the funny papers. That's because nothing has ever been able to take it's place. Could you imagine Opus, Bill, Steve, and Milo tackling today's issues? What besides G.W. Bush and Saddam would be in the anxiety closet. Alas, we can only remember the good times.

This is one of my favorite Bloom County books. It mostly took on an issue that has always been important to me, rock n roll. The gang takes on the PMRC by forming their own metal band Deathtongue. After battling Washington though, Steve Dallas caves in and Billy and the Boingers is born.

Long live live Opus. He is sorely missed.

4 out of 5 stars Basselopes and penguins and rabbits, oh my........2004-03-09

I've always had a slight preference for the early "Bloom County", before things got quite this surreal. Which is not to say that I don't enjoy this one; there are a great many very funny bits in here, such as Steve Dallas facing the government commission led by Tipper Gore in defense of the lyrics of the rock band "Deathtongue", which featured Opus the penguin on tuba (very appropriate for a heavy-metal band, wouldn't you say?) Hodge-Podge the rabbit on drums, Bill the Cat on electric tongue, and Steve Dallas a lead singer and songwriter. All of which is certainly pretty surreal. But sometimes it got even weirder than that, if you can believe it.

Not the best of the "Bloom County" books, and certainly not the one to start with if you aren't familiar with them, but funny and worth owning if you enjoy the series and don't have it.

Book Description

The first ever made available to the general public: A live recording of one of Bryan's 90 minute classes at his very popular Santa Monica, CA studio, in audio CD format accompanied by a beautiful instructional booklet. The audio CD is segmented into 7 tracks for easy repeating or forwarding. The booklet has over 100 photographed asanas (positions) that track the recording, along with detailed written instruction for key poses provided by Bryan.

In addition to being an excellent, complete yoga routine for your library, the CDs are a compact format perfect for travelers.

A real live class is best, but this cd and booklet works very well as an alternative if you can't get to real live class.

4 out of 5 stars a very loud aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!! and lots of babble.......2006-11-10

This is a pretty good workout (although barely any ab work) but it really isn't for me. I practice with Baptiste and Shiva Rae and also on my own with music (Jala by Shiva is really great for a yoga practice). I love to work hard and sweat and tone but I also like a a spiritual, peacefull aspect to my practice and although he does make some good points, to me he sounds like he is lecturing and even though he is reminding us to leave our ego behind to me he sounds full of ego which may be because of his tone. Baptiste talks a lot but I feel inspired and encouraged and he seems so warm and genuine. Shiva is calm and graceful with a very soothing voice. I know Kest is very popular and successful and probably a real fun guy (at times I cracked up during the routine) and the first time I did it I enjoyed it. Then it got annoying.
The asanas are all very basic and simple but you do hold them quite awhile so you get some heat to be sure. Beginners could follow along and refer to the easy flip guide book. Maybe the advanced c.d. is better.
Namaste.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD Set.......2006-03-18

I really enjoy this CD. It is a nice change from the vidoes, and you only have to do it a couple of times before you really don't need the booklet either.
Bryan Kest has a unique style - but I really enjoy him, and have gotten a lot out of his "conversations" during the class itself. It has some challenging segments, so not for the true beginner, but is pretty accessible, as Bryan really speaks to all levels. I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Great additon to my Kest collection.......2005-10-18

I bought this with the Advanced Yoga CD. I love them both and alternate between the two. Simply put, if yo want a great workout at home and like Kest's style, these are the CD's for you! Personally I get bored with Shiva Rea and other instructors. It is Kest's style that keeps me focused on why I am practicing yoga and at the end feel great!

5 out of 5 stars As good as a live class!.......2003-06-10

I love this book with cd! The booklet is wonderful for showing modifications of the poses. The class can be as challenging as you want it to be. Bryan's instruction and reminders to breathe are excellent. The cd/booklet format is great for yoga, because you can concentrate more on your practice than on trying to look at your tv screen if it was in video or dvd format.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Intro .......2006-05-22

Soul Among Lions is a a wonderful tidbit to introduce the wit, wisdom, prophecy, profanity, and other gems attached to the genius of Will Campbell. The readings are indeed short and crisp--and powerful. My suggestion is to read slowly and chew the cud carefully--you can bet Mr. campbell never utters a word he hasn't savored first.

There are longer and thicker books among the author's impresive canon, and each is worth the journey, but Soul Among Lions sheds a little light on why such a diverse cast of characters, from Thomas Merton to Waylon Jennings and various points in between, have sought out this particular "Bootleg Preacher," sat and watched him whittle down a cedar stick, and perhaps muse a little here and there.

And it is just a taste, but if it stirs your appetite--and it most likely will--then there are other Campbell books waiting to be devoured.

4 out of 5 stars Meditations on truth.......2002-04-26

These are very short meditations focusing on scripture in relation to present day situations. They are meant to tantilize you and begin discussion or thought. This is an easy book to just pick up and read a few pages or sit down and read the complete work in very little time. For me it was a breath of fresh air.

1 out of 5 stars Cliff Notes.......2002-01-13

Each musing (chapter) gets only a few pages. It reduces some of his ideas to no more than: wouldn't this be nice? with no suggestions to make it happen. I was hoping the book would be more like Jim Wallis' Faith Works.

5 out of 5 stars Another gem from Brother Will.......2000-07-25

Will D. Campbell, "bootleg preacher" to the unwashed and unlovable, has penned another book of wonder. Brother to a Dragonfly is viewed a modern classic[as it is}.Soul among Lions is a worthy cousin. Brother Will has stayed busy, stirring up a hornets nest wherever he can, placing a well intentioned burr in the saddle of the powerful. The short, wonderful essays are a goldmine for the comitted christian{though, of course, that statement covers an awful lot of ground}.Read Brother will, then look at yourself. If you are not challenged, read it again. To comfort the powerless and make the powered uncomfortable, and to do it with wit, and poetry.Quite a book, quite a human being.

5 out of 5 stars A gentle reminder that we are all in the same family........1999-05-15

With a gentle poetic nudge, Campbell reminds us that we are all in the same family, that we humans need each other as much as we need to get on with the business of forgiving. This book of short essays that Campbell calls "musings" (and that can be read in less than an hour) asks questions about human frailties and pretenses with love and acceptance and wit. A Southerner of courage and conscience and keen intelligence, Campbell wonders why the Fannye Browns who quietly go about doing good for others are forgotten while the Trent Lotts and Jerry Falwells seem to go loudly about doing good for self. Campbell muses that the national angst about homelessness can be assuaged if each church congregation takes just one homeless person into its care. He wonders about the motives of the Christian Coalition and simply asks that we look beneath the surface to find our common humanity. "Soul Among Lions" will give moral courage to the reflective reader. This thought-provoking book is the sort to purchase by the dozen to send as gifts to friends and one's elected officials.

5 out of 5 stars Smokey Airplane Action.......2006-06-05

Over the past ten years I've become kind of a non-fiction geek. Dunno, just can't seem to find any fiction that gets its hooks deeply enough into me to make a real impression. I give it a whirl a few times a year with a new Grisham or something I hear about on NPR, but by the last page I'm still not satisfied. It's disappointing.

Just finished reading Bootleg Skies this morning, and it shattered this bad-fiction streak. It fulfilled my expectations for being fun, pulpy, and full of smokey airplane action. But it also genuinely surprised me with its thorough character development and engrossing plot. I look forward to more from Berge.

If you're a pilot, or, like me, clawing your way through the expensive and time-consuming process of becoming one, you'll really enjoy this book. It'll remind you of what drew you into that FBO the first time, yourself.

This book is so good! I can't believe there weren't any other reviews. It's wonderfully gripping and exciting.
It's about two boys who live in a world where chocolate is banned. Their love of sweets leads them to make it illegally, but that can't last for long, because the chocolate police is on their trail!
This book made me laugh out loud, but it was especially good because there are grown-up ideas about the world we live in.
The whole family will enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Rollicking Parody.......2003-01-18

Grunge and Roxy were the only two remotely interesting characters in the Gen13 series so it's only fitting that Adam Warren devoted an entire miniseries to a conversation they have that quickly devolves into a hysterical parody of manga, anime, kung-fu flicks, and comics in general.

After seeing a laughably bad ninja movie with his kinda-sorta girlfriend, Grunge decides that even a muscle-headed surf-rat such as himself could make better cinema. What follows is his epic idea for the greatest movie ever; starring none-other than his brilliant self of course...and under duress, Roxy as his saucy sidekick.

From a period piece...in bikinis, to an action film...in lingerie, to a Yakuza Mafia flick...in tube tops, Grunge's dirty little mind ricochets from one ripe parody to another, much to Roxy's chagrin. Her vision involves Sailor Moon style romance, not having shower scenes with steam wafting past convenient places. Her tart remarks will have you smiling when you should be cringing at the political incorrectness of it all.

What makes it so great is that Warren draws in line-perfect manga style, making the comedy that much funnier. Roxy has never looked better, with her pink-streaked punker hair and her bulky leather jacket, she looks ten times better than any actual manga girl.

This is definitely a teens and up read, despite the cartoony goodness of the art. There is near-nudity, violence, and innuendo aplenty; perfect for a good chuckle but not for little kids.

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting if Flawed Look At The History Of Bootlegs.......2006-09-29

While a very interesting book with a few enjoyable stories about bootlegging this book was also a bit of a disappointment.Firstly the authors own feelings about certain bands and performers is rather clear. For example its fairly obvious that the author has a great love of The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan and is not to fond of The Beatles,a point of view I admit I do not entirely share.I love Dylan and The Stones but The Beatles will forever be my favorites.Granted its clear that while not involved in bootlegs himself at any point the author is a big fan of them thus a hard core music fan and hardcore music fans do tend to have even stronger opinions than most people.Still I must say it would be nice to have a book that gives an overview of bootlegs from a more unbiased point of view, maybe thats to much to ask but I am still hoping to find a book like that someday.I don't need someone that loves The Beatles to write such a book(since there are already such books out there)simply someone that can keep themselves out of the book a bit more so to speak. At times the book reads a bit more like a critique of rock music and thats not what I was looking for in this particular book but an overview of the history of the rock bootleg industry.
The other problem with this book is at times Clinton Heylin also has a habit of going off into long explinations of the workings of national and international copywrite law.I would understand at least some of this being in there as it relates to the subject but he goes a bit far with it and it makes the book drag at times(unless of course you want to study copywrite law that is).
Overall this is a fairly enjoyable book and worth reading with a number of worthwhile stories in it but it could have been better.Personally I am still looking for the book that will give a real insightful look at the history of rock bootlegs.

    3 out of 5 stars Fell a Bit Short.......2004-04-29

I was excited when this book came out, but it fell short of my expectations. I was hoping for some great stories from the good old days of bootlegging, but this reads more like a history book and is, sadly, written by someone who wasn't even involved in the business.

This book is good for someone who is interested in learning a bit about bootlegging, but I'm holding my breath for the day that a first person account of the world of early bootlegging comes out!!

5 out of 5 stars A true Representation of Bootleg History.......2003-12-07

I found the stories acuratly represented the bootleg buisness at the time. I had indirect involvement and the book filled in those missing pieces that I always wondered about. Great explainations of the copywrite law and how it kept changing to keep up with the times. Some pretty funny stories involving many characters throughout the book. If you were into the old bootleg vinyl, you'll find these stories interging.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, in need of a 21st-century update.......2003-05-25

_Bootleg_ is a fascinating, enthralling book, which I expect would be interesting to anybody regardless of their particular position on the morality of bootlegging. To be sure, Heylin comes solidly in the corner of "let the music be free," but is hardly obstrusive about that fact. Small research errors aside, Bootleg is an amazing look at a once-thriving musical subculture.

Which is, I guess, my one point of reservation here. The bootleg scene has changed so massively and, perhaps, immeasurably, during the past ten years that _Bootleg_ begins to read as more of a pure history book on days long past than as a record of something vibrant. The advent of CDRs, in particular, has totally changed the dynamic in which bootleg recordings are distributed and manufactured. A 21st century update which recognizes the birth of these trends would be very appreciated.

    4 out of 5 stars A LOST ART, HA,HA,HA!.......2000-04-26

Growing up in Los Angeles. I remember going into music stores that had rows of Bootlegs. I did have Zeps (or not zeps) Blueberry Hill. Lots of Deep Purple & Alice Cooper. It was true! You could see a show,10 days later? Thar she blows! RECORD WORLD in LA PUENTE did have the best! You can tell the world was Bob Dylon for Clinton Heylin. Listening to the Beatles fart was about the leval of most Bootlegs. But thats what we wanted to get a wiff of,right?,lol! }:-D My step-brother Rick had at least 200 or more! But for me nothing like the real deal.

      Book Description

In the summer of 1969, Great White Wonder, a collection of unreleased Bob Dylan recordings appeared in Los Angeles. It was the first rock bootleg and it spawned an entire industry dedicated to making unofficial recordings available to true fans. bringing the story right up to date, Bootleg tells the whole fascinating saga, from its underground infancy through the CD protection gap era, when its quasi-legal status threatened the major labels monopoly, to the recent explosion of online trading of MP3 files. Clinton Heylin provides a highly readable account of all the legal accounts, the busts, the defeats, and victories in court, and of the personalities - many interviewed for the first time for this book. Bootleg is also a celebration of the music the bootleggers have put out, the stories behind the treasured bootlegs, and the legendary bootleg labels.

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Repeats a lot of info from his other book .......2007-05-24

I collect bootlegs and I bought both this book and Heylin's second book, Bootleg: The Secret History of the Other Recording Industry. Sadly, I would have saved money if I had only purchased one book or the other, as both books contain identical (seriously, word for word identical) material. Granted, there is *some* (albeit nominal) difference between the two books but the repetition is so extensive that I feel like I was hosed.

5 out of 5 stars Makes available unreleased music.......2006-11-07

Very much takes the view that Bootlegging is just as much about making available unreleased music as it is about making illegal cash.

The author rightly points out that the Internet and downloading put more old time bootleggers out of business than the RIAA.

5 out of 5 stars A must for all bootleg collectors.......2005-12-06

This should be considered the Bible for those of us who are compelled to seek out live recordings & studio outtakes in addition to (or sometimes instead of) the officially released "product". BOOTLEG is exhaustively researched, providing a fascinating overview of the bootleg recording industry (for lack of a better term). I've been collecting bootlegs for almost 20 years, but it turns out that I knew very little about the history of bootlegging (not to mention the details of how bootleg records / CDs came to be pressed and distributed). I can't recommend this one highly enough.
