Each feature goes into depth about the plant. The author knows his plants.Excellent purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-06-14

I'm not a gardener, but I need to learn about growing things in shady places. This book is wonderful, easy to read, pretty to look at, and simple enough for an uninformed person. At the same time, it has lots of good info that even an experienced gardener could learn.
I can hardly wait to get out into the dirt!

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!!.......2007-04-05

This is the best book I ever bought. I'm a shade lover, due to easy care and most of all...hostas. Until I read Larrys comments on shade, I thought I was the only one who wished my entire yard was shade, and that I may be a lazy gardener. Not anymore! This book is packed full of great ideas for shade gardens, and lots of tips. Theres also plants biographies of those that do well in shade, and he continually reminds you that many "sun" plants do well in light shade. I enjoyed the section on starting a new garden from scratch. His sense of humor is great and its easy to read and well organized. This is a MUST HAVE for those that enjoy shade gardening, and for those who think shade is their enemy. You'll have a new respect for shade after reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars The basic reference book........2007-02-12

Hodgson understands every beginner shade gardener or anyone whose property has the blessing of mature trees. He encourages a form of gardening that many consider a formidable challenge. I am not sure what I would have done without this book. The pictures, the text, and the information really makes this book a must-have for all.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for shade garden newbie.......2007-01-12

Just fenced off an area of our yard (we have a real deer problem). Now I have a wonderful new, shady, garden space just waiting for plants. Book is great because it covers everything from soil issues, to shade perennials, mixing in annuals and basic design elements for shade gardens. And it's written in a way that makes it a fun read during the winter when all you can do is prepare for spring.

4 out of 5 stars Mainly Classic Designs.......2003-06-17

This book will not teach you how to sew curtains but it will give you loads of ideas for your window treatment. However, it is only ideal for those looking for classical designs since no modern styles are shown.

It also lacks new creative designs, I always felt that each design is familiar to me.

4 out of 5 stars Great source of ideas for elaborate window treatments.......2003-04-20

The book contains line drawings of styles for all the various elements of a window treatment as well as ideas for dealing with different kinds of windows. The book decomposes window treatments into pelmets, valences, etc., etc., etc., with pages of line drawings of styles for each element. Then, it pulls the various elements together into a total look.

I was leant this book, but I found it so helpful I bought my own. It has drawbacks. If you want something simple and/or you plan to make them yourself, this probably isn't the book for you. There are no instructions or measurements of any kind, just the drawings. But if you're working with a decorator who knows a professional, or are a decorator yourself, then this book will help your imagination run wild.

5 out of 5 stars The Curtain Sketchbbok 2 by Wendy Baker.......2002-06-13

This book is really great for any windows. Mostly if you are a interior designer. It gaves you lot of good examples which curtains will good in what rooms with different types of furnitures. This book gaves you something that no one esle has. You will be the first one to have that design in your room before someone esle does

4 out of 5 stars Curtain Sketchbook 2.......2000-03-28

This is a great book if you're looking for unique window treatments. I wanted something everyone else didn't have. It is not a how-to book but the illustrations are very detailed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sourcebook for design professionals........1999-10-24

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars So So.......2007-06-11

This book was a bit disapointing. The disappointment comes from the intrepetation of Country style or English country style, as shown the the photographs, as being lots of clutter and in some cases not the best of taste. I have many other style books that show how charming Country style, antiques and hodge podge collections can be, but somehow many of the examples in this book miss the mark. Maybe the author's take on Country style is just not my cup of country tea, so to speak. Many photos are from the author's own home and I felt that narrowed the scope of the book somewhat.

5 out of 5 stars inspiration for your dream home.......2007-02-28

I can seldom resist a good décor book, especially one on Country Style. My current excuse is that I'm looking for ideas I can use in my own country house which I've been renovating for the past 5 years.

Shades of Country is perfect for the amateur decorator and it's reasonably priced too. It is profusely illustrated with a wealth of examples of actual American homes -- including the author's own country retreat -- which are not only beautiful but emphasize comfort & practicality. Some of them are derived from European country styles, but most are what we think of as typically American - east coast farmhouses, Shaker simplicity, Montana ranch and rustic Adirondack cabin.

There is something for every taste here; cosy bedrooms with iron beds & antique bureaus & old quilts in muted pastels; walls painted, wallpapered, wainscotted or of varnished logs; walls hung with blue and white platters, old portraits or prints or ornate mirrors; a stair rail made from a birch tree; support posts disguised as palm trees; kitchens with open shelves of china bowls or glassware, and red-painted iron pots hanging from overhead beams; staircases plain or classic; toile's and stripes and rose-bouquet chintzes; floral cushions on a jade green slip-covered sofa; cobalt blue cushions on spruce-green wicker chairs on a white-painted verandah; a window box on a country out-house, and bookshelves - which I seldom see in American decor magazines - including one converted from a fireplace hole-in-the-wall (I guess I'm not the first to think of doing that) and fluted pilasters high-lighting an otherwise plain bookshelf .

Whether you are renovating your home; or still dreaming of that someday home in the country; updating a tired décor or looking for ideas for colour schemes or a knick-knack shelf, this book will inspire you.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Country Homes.......2007-01-16

This may not break any new ground in decorating, but I never fail to enjoy browsing one more book on the topic of country style. This shows use of fabrics, accessories, paint and furniture that makes country style what it is. It also defines some sub-genres of country; Farmhouse, Grand Country, Cottage, Rusticator, Clean and Simple, and Urban Arcadia.
If you like Country Living magazine or enjoy the Shabby Chic trend, then you'll find pleasure in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Ho-hum.......2006-12-30

In my opinion, this book did not "live up to" it's cover. Too many of the rooms looked very dated. I love the idea of collecting over time but many of these rooms were very lackluster and boring. I requested it as a Christmas gift and wish I could un-request it!

3 out of 5 stars Just another potpourri book..........2006-10-20

I love interior decorating books, especially Colonial, Regency and Victorian or English Country Style. But this book covers too much territory. A few pictures of each, as well as others styles like Ranch, or French. If you are having trouble deciding on a style, this book might help you. It has lovely illustrations, but again, as it is trying to cover many different styles falling under the broad title of "Country" your information is limited. There are too many books coming out like this. Specialty books are much better. Look to Rizzoli for the best in interior decorating books, or if you want some kind of country, best buy a book that covers that one particular style. I browsed through this at the store, hoping it might make a good Christmas present for me, but it ended up back on the shelf.

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER-NOW IN PAPERBACK

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-06-13

A decent beginning and plot development then left to plod through a poor structure and no ending. I'm not kidding. There was no ending.

2 out of 5 stars LIke eating a fine meal..........2007-06-06

To borrow from Grimes herself in the book, the story was served in several small courses over a prolonged period of time. This was, according to Grimes, supposed to provide for a satisfying and fulfilling meal.

Some of the dishes were so brilliant -- simple and wonderful presentation. And, some of the dishes were extremely complex, enough so that this reader's taste buds did not know how to react. Oddly, she served breakfast midway through the main course, trying to pass an egg omelette as a kiesh.

What I really liked was that the main course was quite succulent. She cooked it for hours and hours. It was wonderfully seasoned and the aroma kept me guessing just exactly what the recipe was. I just had to know. The pages turned and turned and turned.

At the end, I was wonderfully anticipating dessert. This was to be the end of all ends to one of the most memorable dinners ever eaten. The smell coming from the kitchen was undeniable -- an enticing smell richly filled the air. Ms. Grimes had masterfully executed this meal and dessert was to be the conclusion to sweetly line my mouth leaving fresh memories all the way home.

And then, out of nowhere, the Maitre'D showed up with the check. I flipped to the end of the menu to see the dessert selection, but it was not there. I inquired with the Maitre'D, but his reply was that Ms. Grimes does not serve dessert -- she is merely preparing it for herself; the kitchen is now closed.

Rather than the sweet taste of satisfaction, I left this book with a very sour taste in my mouth. It ends unexpectedly. When I say unexpectedly, I mean that you finish the last chapter expecting to flip to the final chapter. But, it is not there. It just ends without a conclusion. No tying of loose ends. Reasonable doubt still placed with all suspects. You really have no idea what the chefs menu was to be.

Ms. Grimes assumes incorrectly that it is our imagination that will cook up dessert. To this I say to Ms. Grimes: you had me over for dinner, why did you expect me to cook?

2 out of 5 stars Pull the shades, the party's over........2007-05-26

I am conflicted here, because I am a long time reader of Martha Grimes Richard Jury mysteries. It is, undoubtedly difficult to keep the same characters fresh and the stories clever. But, I have a bit of a crush on Richard Jury, so I continue to plod through these books. The Old Wine Shades has many vintage Martha Grimes elements--oppressed, yet wise and brave children, round table discussions at the Jack and Hammer, Aunt Agatha scarfing down too many fairy cakes--but even these old dependables can't save this book. Sadly, the weak threads, lack luster dialogue compounded by a problem-solving dog and cat, along with a tedious science lesson, make the book unbearable for me. I've walked into my last pub with Richard Jury; I'm really going to miss him.

2 out of 5 stars Go to the library!.......2007-05-20

I usually love all of the Richard Jury mysteries. This one sucks. There is no conclusion to this story. I can only assume that there will be another book to complete this one. I would not mind, had I known up front, but to wade through chapters and chapters of various theories, to no real conclusion, is so annoying.

The only reason I gave it a two star rating, instead of a one, is all of the usual wonderful Jury characters are in the book. This however doesn't save it.

Trust me; borrow this book, don't buy it. That's what I am going to do for the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Keep up the great writing!.......2007-05-15

Martha Grimes is excellent with characterization and plot. What a treat it is to meet characters we know from earlier works! Martha writes on several levels--making her plots and characters complex and wonderful. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-02-20

This book gives you a wealth of knowledge and ideas. There are no "how to's" in the book however, so if you need sewing directions, you will need another reference. But there are charts on how to figure how much material you will need, and little hints about the types of fabrics that will look good and what to avoid with the different designs, so it is an excellent reference up to the point of actually making the drapes or curtains yourself.

5 out of 5 stars The 'bible' of window treatments..........2007-01-10

As an interior decorating shop, this book is an integral part of our work station. It helps us with practically every custom job we fabricate. Whether you are a professional, or just interested in decorating as a hobby, it educates you on every level, and is user-friendly. We highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars My comment is about the third edition (ISBN 0962473626) .......2006-12-31

Spiral-bound, ALL in color, ALL illustrations in full color. Beautiful book, and very easy to use, with the tabs it has that open it to the specific chapter I want.
The detailed instructions for materials needed, and construction, are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Great Idea Book for Window Treatments.......2006-03-11

This fifth edition has all the sketches in color. Just to give you an idea of how comprehensive this is, there are 19 pages showing valances, with five per page. I love this book, as it really opened our minds to the variety of styles available for windows. No more boring windows.
There's even a section for draperies, swags and valances used with beds.
I particularly liked the section "Windows With a Challenge" that showed solutions for such issues as an air conditioner in a double-hung window or dealing with arched top windows.
This has two index sections in the back. One is the usual word index and the other is a 38 page visual index showing the windows in black-and-white thumbnail sketches.
It's terrific, not just for professional decorators, but for all individuals wanting a new look for their home.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book.......2006-08-30

I have an old Victorian House and this book has been a wonderful guide. The styles fit in my 12 foot ceiling rooms like they were meant to be. I don't think this book is for modern homes.

3 out of 5 stars The Dramatic Drapery Book.......2005-12-07

When I see the words curtain, I think something that someone with average skills might be able to create. I think this book should have been called The Drapery Book because the majority of the window styles are much more elaborate than what I consider to be curtains. I am not a decorator so I might have the wrong connotations of the words, but this is what comes to my mind when I see curtains vs drapes.

Most of the styles depicted are beautiful but VERY elaborate and more focused on mansions. The majority of drapes are similar to ones you would see in very wealthy homes, i.e. Hearst Castle and some of the old railroad barons mansions in Florida. Unfortunately, the majority of the book would require some major sewing skills or a custom draperier to create.

This book has only limited info for someone on a stricter budget. Some of the treatments and information could be adapted and implemented in a less ornate setting (pg 29). There are 4 pages devoted to "Keeping it Simple". My favorite part of the book were pages 134-35 where there are illustrations for decorating and throwing fabrics over Poles.

If you are looking for more contemporary, relaxed, simpler "curtains", I would recommend a different book. If you are looking for elaborate, classic-traditional "drapes", this would be the book for you.

2 out of 5 stars Of limited use.......2002-12-14

I did not find this book to be very inspirational. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead 1 is because this book would be beneficial to some people. If you like traditional style, like the other reviewers of this book obviously do, this book is probably for you. Everyone else can find other books that give the same level of technical instructions with more range of styles and better photos. The book has a lot of sketches instead of actual photos.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Winner!.......2002-09-16

If you love opulence you won't be disappointed! Page after page of gorgeous photos that inspire. Dozens of ideas. Suggestions for every room in your home. A decorator's delight, professional or not. Complete with a section on fabric types and how best to use them. Simple drawings instruct how to cut fabrics to achieve the look you've chosen. While the book doesn't cover sewing techniques (there are other good books to learn those, and they really don't belong in this book,) it does include patterns that are easy to follow along with 'how to' measuring instructions. This book is a 'must have' for beautiful, distinctive window treatments.

4 out of 5 stars Modern windows with historical connotations.......1998-10-15

This is The book both for the historian (contains numerous period picture presentations) AND anyone needing inspiration for perfectly stunning window treatments. Nothing for a sleak purse though. This is curtains fit for a king.Could be a little heavier on how-to but gorgeous pictures. This book is a home decoraters daydream. It certainly got me dreaming!

I like this book so much - this is the third copy I have purchased this year! (I keep giving my copy away to family members who desperately need it.) The black line drawings are what keep bring me back to this one book for all of our pruning needs. We have berry bushes (some wild and some we planted ourselves), flowering shrubs, fruit trees, a bonzi tree, a dogwood, grape vines, 3 old Oaks trees and 2 young Walnut trees. This ONE BOOK has helped us to care for each of them according to their needs and age. It has helped turn my brown thumb into green.

This book was very helpful for the gardener with lots of trees and shrubs

If you're looking for a good basic book on pruning this is it. I purchased the Ortho book on Pruning and it was a terribe. I went to the library and rented several books on pruning and this was by far the best.

3 out of 5 stars O.K.......2004-12-15

I was somewhat disappointed when this book came. I was expecting a detailed description on pruning individual types of trees. For example, I wanted a book that I could look crepe myrtle up in the index go to that page and have a detailed description on how and when to prune. Crepe Myrtle is not even in the index. I am going to buy the Southern Living Gardening book now.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2002-04-22

I learned a lot about pruning from this book. The illustrations make it very easy to see exactly where you should cut. I wish the author would have included more plant varieties.

5 out of 5 stars A thrilling tale about the former mistress of Pemberely.......2007-06-21

This mystery novel is the third in the series by Carrie Bebris. They are all sequels of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." You do not need to have read Pride and Prejudice to understand this novel although it will help you greatly if you do.

In this story, Elizabeth feels the presence of Darcy's mother in the house, Pemberely. She feels that she is not the mistress and the late Lady Anne, who was adored by all who knew her, still remains. At first it appears that Elizabeth is not pleased with her presence or any rememberance of her. That will soon change. . .

Lizzy is expecting a child, her husband wants to hire a physician to see to the birth, buy Lizzie wants a midwife. They go to Bath to meet the physician and while there they get a letter from a Captain Tilney who wants to make there aquaintence at his home Northanger Abbey, if you have read Jane Austen's novel "Northanger Abbey" you will understand and appreciate the connection between these characters and novels.

The Darcy's arrive at Northanger Abbey on a horribly rainy night and find that their reception by the housekeeper and msater most peculiar and disturbing. You see, they went chiefly because Captain Tilney mentioned in the letter that their mothers were close friends and was curious about their relationship. In addition, Darcy and Elizabeth have grown very curious about Lady Anne because Lizzy has discovered a letter addressed to her from Darcy's mother. Well of course Darcy and Lizzy run into a mishap, an evil plot of familiar and unfamiliar charcters, and the great Lady Catherine de Bough all while they are trying to solve a mystery of Lady Anne before Lizzy is ready to give birth!

This book was such a page turner, wonderful if you like mysteries and Pride and Prejudice, I would say it is the best of the series!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best yet of the series!.......2007-06-20

Fast read. Excellent characters and terrific story. I bought an extra as a gift! As hokey as it sounds that Darcy and Elizabeth are in a mystery, it was remarkably well-written, intriguing and absolutely entertaining. The characters remain true to Austen. I'm hooked. Buy one, you'll have to buy the whole series, too!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Yarn.......2007-06-18

Carrie Bebris has written a wonderfully engaging story that will captivate Jane Austen fans. Indeed, I think Jane Austen would be very pleased with Bebris' continuation of her characters. Mr. & Mrs. Darcy are both deeply drawn and fully realized. The book is also thoroughly researched and accurate, but what's great is that the research doesn't get in the way of the story or the characters. I highly recommend this book to any Jane Austen fan!

4 out of 5 stars Best of the three.......2007-06-18

This book is the best of the three Darcy mysteries by far. Although the plot is still less interesting than the subplots and general character interaction, there's significantly less of the supernatural involved. I give the author credit for an interesting idea when she combined Jane Austen's characters with the kind of plots Catherine Morland loved, I just couldn't buy Elizabeth entering so whole-heartedly into that world. Oddly, Northanger Abby is the only book that really deals with those ideas, and this is the first of the Darcy mysteries to shun them.

Overall it was enjoyable and a quick, fun read.

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining read.......2007-04-07

This series got off to a bit of a rocky start in my opinion, but this book and the previous one have only gotten better. In _North by Northanger_ in particular, Ms. Bebris has really caught the bantering tone that I imagine conversations between Elizabeth and Darcy would have had after their marriage, and the back-and-forth between them over the sex and possible names for their coming first child was one of the most enjoyable parts of the book for me.

The mystery is bizarre and a bit far-fetched but not overly taxing, and mainly acts as a vehicle for bringing together several of the characters we love (and love to hate) so much from _Pride & Prejudice_, as well as from the other novels. (I wish that Catherine Tilney - nee Morland - had made an appearance, though. I would have liked to see how she could have matured from the slightly silly, though good-natured, "heroine" of _Northanger Abbey_.) There is also some character development, and it's good to see Elizabeth, who at the beginning of the novel feels overshadowed by the memory of Darcy's mother, gain confidence and become truly the mistress of Pemberley, which certainly would have been a daunting task for her, given her modest upbringing. Darcy, too, must still learn some lessons about humility, particularly in his overprotective attitude over Elizabeth's pregnancy. This is made more understandable, however, by the fuller picture that we gain of his childhood, his mother's personality and the relationship between his parents, mainly through letters that Elizabeth must pore over to discover what has become of a precious heirloom.

5 out of 5 stars Great design idea source!.......2007-07-01

I am an aspiring interior decorator who has bought tons of window treatment idea books as well as countless magazines for window treatment inspiration. This book now ranks #1 among all my resources for design ideas! The pictures are gorgeous, the styles are numerous and the bonus is that not only do the pictures show great window treatment ideas, but the rooms themselves are equally stunning, giving lots of decorating ideas as well. And while this is not a how-to book, it does help you decide what type of treatmens are best for your particular window type. It also helps you decide, for example, how many pleats you should plan for a pleated valance based on your window size. The only caveat I would give is that it includes mostly traditional decor, including traditional window treatments. There are few examples of more modern, clean-lined treatments. But as my style runs mostly to traditional anyway, this does not bother me. Again, a great resource for design ideas for yourself and for your clients!

5 out of 5 stars Your Window Treatment Resource.......2007-04-04

This book is full of ideas and great tips for time-saving steps when creating your new window treatments. Spectacular photography accompanies the brilliant ideas.

4 out of 5 stars good idea book.......2007-02-12

I was hoping for more hands on advice, but it is a great book to get ideas for your windows, with lots of great pictures.

4 out of 5 stars Great ideas, terrific photography.......2007-02-06

I first borrowed this book from our local library, and liked it so much I bought my own. The photos of window treatments in actual rooms make the styles more real than sketches of windows alone. Included are explanations of how the various styles are constructed, and also recommendations for when to use professional installation, 'store-bought' or easy 'do-it-yourself' steps. Practical advice for when to use and when not to use a particular window treatment is really valuable. Whether you like the full multi-layered luxurious treatments, or simple classic coverings, it's all here.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Resource!.......2007-01-13

The treatments in your new book are fantastic! How on earth are you able to come up with such a large amount of photos that don't seem to repeat everything else out there? And I don't see a lot of treatments made from the same old patterns either. Bravo! Thank so much for a book that I can show to my clients without apology for outdated photos or chintzy styles.
Your photos are of quality treatments suitable for the best of homes!
