When Stephen King originally wrote The Green Mile as a series of six novellas, he didn't even know how the story would turn out. And it turned out to be of his finest yarns, tapping into what he does best: character-driven storytelling. The setting is the small "death house" of a Southern prison in 1932. The Green Mile is the hall with a floor "the color of tired old limes" that leads to "Old Sparky" (the electric chair). The charming narrator is an old man, a prison guard, looking back on the events decades later.

Maybe it's a little too cute (there's a smart prison mouse named Mr. Jingles), maybe the pathos is laid on a little thick, but it's hard to resist the colorful personalities and simple wonders of this supernatural tale. And it's not a bad choice for giving to someone who doesn't understand the appeal of Stephen King, because the one scene that is out-and-out gruesome (it involves "Old Sparky") can be easily skipped by the squeamish.

The Green Mile won a 1997 Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel; and Tom Hanks stars in a film of the novel by Frank Darabont, the director of The Shawshank Redemption (from King's collection Different Seasons). --Fiona Webster

Book Description

Read this history-making serial novel -- from cliffhanger to cliffhanger -- in its entirety.

When it first appeared, one volume per month, Stephen King's The Green Mile was an unprecedented publishing triumph: all six volumes ended up on the New York Times bestseller list -- simultaneously -- and delighted millions of fans the world over.

Welcome to Cold Mountain Penitentiary, home to the Depression-worn men of E Block. Convicted killers all, each awaits his turn to walk the Green Mile, keeping a date with "Old Sparky," Cold Mountain's electric chair. Prison guard Paul Edgecombe has seen his share of oddities in his years working the Mile. But he's never seen anyone like John Coffey, a man with the body of a giant and the mind of a child, condemned for a crime terrifying in its violence and shocking in its depravity. In this place of ultimate retribution, Edgecombe is about to discover the terrible, wondrous truth about Coffey, a truth that will challenge his most cherished beliefs...and yours.

5 out of 5 stars A Tremendously Moving Story.......2007-06-27

You cannot go wrong with this novel. King fan or not, you will be moved by the characters, the writing, the themes...It's a beautiful, beautiful story that makes you look into your heart. You will not be able to put this one down.

5 out of 5 stars You saw the movie..........2007-06-09

I have seen the movie several times and it never fails to move me. I finally decided to read the book, too. A great story, characters you can really care about, and some things about real life to think about.

5 out of 5 stars The Green Mile a Story of Faith.......2007-06-02

We have all met someone that made a great impact on our life or even changed our life. This is the case in the book The Green Mile by Stephen King. Paul Edgecombe, a prison guard at Cold Mountain, tells of the year when John Coffey came to the prison. I enjoyed reading this book because it shows how different people value life. It shows how faithful people are during hard, testing moments in life. This book shows how people can find hope in the most unusual situations.

4 out of 5 stars 'The' Stephen King novel? .......2007-04-28

Okay, so I'm not a big King fan. What I have read is okay, but nothing special. That said, Carrie was cool. Then I came to The Green Mile... This is a wonderful book. It deals with such huge themes on such an intimate level, you can't help but be drawn in and captivated. But it's not just the story, or the characters that get you, it's King's writing - it just seems so much farther above his normal standard. For example - `She was black as the ace of spades and as beautiful as the sin you never had nerve enough to commit.' Wonderful stuff! And that's only on page 4. Okay, the book isn't heaving under such evocative narrative, but it's such tiny touches that raise it above the norm.

As for the story/characters? Well, John Coffey does so little, yet does so much. And isn't his fate a reflection on how we really do treat good people in the real world? Isn't King simply holding up a mirror for us, something good writers often do? Who can't be moved by what happens to Coffey and by the predicament Edgecombe finds himself in? Very moving and frighteningly realistic in its worldview.

It's certainly a book I'll be returning to again - a thing I do not do easily!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, in a Cruel, Prison-Set Kind of Way..........2007-04-23

I was mostly afraid to read The Green Mile-- I can't stand horror in any way, and am known to cover my eyes during horror movie commercials. Stephen King didn't sound like the right writer for me. But my mother urged me to read The Green Mile, and said it wasn't scary at all, so I gave it a try.

All at once I was sucked into a completely different world, one set at Cld Mountain Penitentiary-- the quiet part of the prison, where the inmates on death row are kept. I listened to Paul Edgecombe, a nursing home patient, tell his story through flashbacks, and learned about John Coffey, a six-foot-eight-inch black man, convicted of raping and killing two little girls. Coffey (like the drink, only not spelled the same) isn't like any of the other problem children to sit on the Green Mile whom Paul's seen-- he cries almost constantly, and causes no trouble at all, despite his huge size. He's knows his name, but not too much else, and Paul wonders how he ever pulled off the crime he committed. He's not the only strange being on the Mile, either-- there's Delacroix, a small and scared Frenchman, his mouse, Mr. Jingles, the smartest of his kind, and Wild Bill Wharton, a vulgar and dangerous killer. Edgecombe and his team have to manage the group like any other convicts who will walk The Green Mile, but that proves to be difficult, especially when Coffey proves that he's not like any other convict-- or any other person, for that matter.

Stephen King weaves his world expertly. The accents of all the characters blend and just add to the story. There's a point where you stop noticing them altogether, just like the everyday look of the death row cells becomes familiar with each new chapter. The supernatural elements (whether or not you believe them) are described with complete realism, as is the prison and Southern setting. The book wasn't scary, as my mom promised it wouldn't be, but be prepared for it to hit you deep down. There's just something completely believable and dark about it that makes you nod in the end and think, "Yeah, that's how it would have happened." And you won't be happy about it.

It's not a happy little fairy tale. There are plenty of vulgar moments, occasional violence, lots of profanity. It is a prison, after all. Stephen King plows on with detail through the excecution scenes, not letting you get off with a paragraph write-off. If the characters had to go through it, you do too.

The Green Mile is my current favorite book. I'm disappointed in myself for not being able to stomach horror, because now I have a limited selection of Stephen King's brilliant writing left to choose from.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-08-16

One of King's best works. Fortunately I read the original version which, when introduced, came as 6 separate short stories. One released each month for 6 months. It's so good I would read one part then be on pins & needles waiting for the next part to come out the next month. Character description & the prison descriptions were excellent. As for who Mr. Coffey really is beyond his physical being, you can draw your own conclusion. The writing is excellent & to the point. No wasted mumble jumble. Pick it up & you won't be able to put it down

5 out of 5 stars renewed my faith in reading.......2006-07-27

i am not going to say much about the story, but, to lay the groundwork........i am at 32 years of age i haven't read a novel in over 10 years. well that being said, i got back into reading books about 5 months ago and have been reading feverishly.......sadly, mostly recent best sellers and such, i.e. "da vinci code",.............

so when i was looking for something new at the store i passed by king's section and saw the "talisman", which i read in 8th grad (remember i am now 32), so i thought, maybe i should read that again since it's been so long.......

then i thought about other horror guys.......koontz......barker.....

then my eye caught the green mile, i never saw the movie, which i kicked myself for, so i thought what a great opportunity, read the book first!!!!!!!!!

well, well.............this was the best thing i ever picked up, not only did it remind me of why reading was so good for the mind and soul, but it really made a difference in my life. this is the sort of book that needs to be read in a 9th grade english class.....then every student writes a report on it, then everyone is rewarded with watching the movie over the course of the week.

thank you stephen king, thank you for making me remember how good a book can be, to read, to talk about, and to think about, then, look at your own life.

bravo

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful read from King, with a thought out ending.......2006-04-05

One of the things I hate most about some of Stephen King's novels is the lack of an ending. In the green mile you get one. This is one of his most well written books. He has a great way of making a reader fall in love with characters. In no way will you be dissapointed in this read. I still havent seen the movie because I appreciate the book so much.Hands down one of the King mans best books ever!

4 out of 5 stars Feels so Real.......2005-07-19

The setting of this story is very well real, the story is somewhat fabricated with the certain amount of magic in it, but the characters make this book great. King describes everyone in such great detail and the interaction between them as well. This makes this book truly feel real to the reader. I felt like I was transported to another time.

4 out of 5 stars Here is my review.......2005-05-07

The Green Mile takes place in a prison in 1932, where a prison guard discovers that a death row inmate has supernatural powers. The story is told by that guard's point of view. The book is pretty good overall. The characters and story are interesting, but it is a bit long(I think it had about six hundred pages.) Some one who doesn't like long books shouldn't read it. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes prison stories or Stephen King.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who ever doubts their salvation........2007-01-30

Well worth the read. All of us at some time or other has doubts, questions and needs to be strengthened in their knowledge of the finished work of the cross. This book makes great strides in those directions.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Eye-Opener.......2006-08-21

This book is a gem; it remains one of my favorites-- to read and re-read. It brought about a turning point in my Christian life, and introduced me to many other helpful authors.

5 out of 5 stars Back to Basics.......2005-12-21

God has stripped away my dependence on most modern authors and led me to this book. It has been like the missing piece to the puzzle of how to live a victorious life in Christ. I have also been able to obtain most of his recommended 'further growth reading' material, much early 20th century. If you have a hungry heart (you'll know if you do!), you must read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Christianity is Christ ....It is all about Him.......2005-10-15

"By Grace you have been saved through faith." (eph 2:8-9) I know i'm saved by grace but how am i to live the Christian life??? The bible says "as you received Christ Jesus the Lord so walk in Him."(col 2:6) How did you recieve Him? "Did you recieve the Spirit by the works of the law of by the hearing of faith? are you so foolish having begun in the Spirit are you now being made perfect by the flesh." (galatians 3:2-4) "the letter kills but the Spirit gives life" (2 corithians 3:6)Jesus said "i am the Life" (John 14:10) Only Christ can live the Christian life - the Christian life isn't an imitation but a participation in the life of another. "I am the Vine you are the branches." (John 15) The whole Christian life in Christ is "by grace through faith."

This is a wonderful book - he points to Christ and His completed work on the cross, "our old man was crucified with Him." That is a historic fact. We die to sin not by our experiences but by the believing of the fact of what He has done. Now day by day we get to walk less and less according to the flesh and more and more according to the Spirit - by faith believing on His work of the crucified and risen Jesus. It is by knowing our POSITION (standing) in Christ and what He has done that we are able to grow in our CONDITION (walk, fellowship and growth) in Him day by day. The basis of the Christ life is faith .....faith in God's fact - that is in the God who cannot lie! I recommend this book so highly.

"but we with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord are beng transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord."(2 cor 3:18)

I've since changed my view of this title and would give it 1 star. Its simplistic down home feel is deceptive. In it's place I'd suggest Dr. Beeke's "Reformed Puritan Spirituality" or Richard Baxter's "The Reformed Pastor." For spiritual direction and personal worship have a look at "The Valley of Vision."

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for new Christians.......2007-02-26

Although a Christian for a number of years, I never heard teaching like this. The reformed churches stifle "grace teaching" even though they throw in the word 'grace' into the mix once in a while. Positional teaching like this has opened my eyes to all that I am in Christ already--there is nothing left for me to do but believe and appropriate all that is mine. This is foundational faith teaching that I wish I would have heard as a new Christian but am nonetheless thankful to have come across it.

5 out of 5 stars Really good and radical description of grace.......2006-05-17

I read this for the first time when I was only 18 - and it helped to shape my view of God's grace

2 out of 5 stars No longer comfortable with "Letters"........2005-03-21

I originally wrote a "glowing" review for this book, but I have since done much rethinking. Stanford may have some good things to say in "Letters" (if generalized and taken out of his context, frankly), but I am now uneasy about much of what this book teaches.

Stanford had some very narrow, "old-school" Dispensational views not held by the mainstream of scholars today (at least the ones I've seen), and it shows in the way he understood Paul (especially) and the whole of Scripture in light of his writings, and is the undercurrent for this book. (This is more evident in the "Complete" version, but not as evident in the "slim" version, which I feel is a bit deceptive to the reader, since the "slim" is more widely-read.) Whatever you do with this fact, the practical outworking of this ideology for Stanford results in a very unbiblical view of sanctification that makes it difficult to reconcile many New Testament passages. It is difficult for me at this point to believe that the apostle Paul would have instructed believers to walk the way that Stanford does: the classic "let go and let God" mentality. Stanford dresses this in very intelligent writing, drawing a very attractive, powerful picture of his "system". But, pretty as it may be, I now believe this line of thinking to be unbiblical. This kind of teaching can lead believers to self-deception, replacing repentance, active faith, and active seeking of God with a "seated-in-heaven-spirituality" that is not allowed to examine itself, bordering on perfectionism and deep-seated in esoteric "breaking" experiences that simply will not happen in the life of every believer.

Be careful with this book! Don't forget that the same Paul who said, "you were made to die to the Law... to bear fruit for God" also said "I beat my body and make it my slave". Again, the same Paul who wrote so much concerning our certainty of and blessing from being "in Christ" said that he was still striving to be found Him, still striving to be conformed to His death, and still striving to be conformed to His resurrection. There is no lack of certainty of heaven or of being presently "in Christ" here in Paul's statements. They simply point to the reality that sanctification is a process that MUST BE "worked out" through faithful obedience as God "works in". It doesn't just happen by "reckoning" once we "get to the end of ourselves" as "The Green Letters" describes.

4 out of 5 stars Basic and Inspirational for Mature or Maturing Christians.......1999-09-30

This book is basic and inspirational for mature or maturing Christian. It can be summarized as: "Not I, but Christ who lives in me." I first read it in 1981 and have returned to it 5 or 6 times over the years. Now I am considering its use in discipling others. Each reading is short enough to be read devotionally. He doesn't waste words. Very appropriate and non-flowery language marshalling each word to clarify his point.

4 out of 5 stars Changed my entire perspective on grace.......1999-04-22

This book's theme is "Not I, but Christ." The author delves into the power of grace and our inability to do anything without God's help. Simple yet incredibly powerful and the chapters are short. Definitely a must read.

Book Description

It was the "late days of the Depression," times were hard and money scarce, and Ben Green "had about used up all the hard ways to make a living a-horseback." So when he heard talk of wild mustangs free for the taking in the Big Bend country of West Texas, he saddled a road horse, put his camp on a pack horse, and headed west from Weatherford, Texas. Ben recounts his tale at an easy lope, through hot days and cold nights, with dashes of danger along the way. Eventually, he rides, ropes, trades, and talks his way through the mountains and deserts of West Texas, northwest Mexico, and Arizona, gathering horses, mules, and an assortment of characters along the way. More than a year and a thousand miles later, he will try to cut the deal that will make it all worthwhile. Displaying a wry wit, sharp opinions and a measure of luck, Ben emerges from the wild unknown a survivor. But his greatest accomplishment will be to tell A Thousand Miles of Mustangin', a range classic that rides the Western Myth well into the 20th Century.

This is one story of a trip Ben Green takes to Old Mexico to find, catch, and drive back home wild mustangs. This is all done by horseback in the days of real cowboying. He tells the reader how he catches them, trains them to drive, and the interesting people he meets on the trail. If you love horses you will love this well written adventure.

5 out of 5 stars A Thousand Miles of Mustangin'.......2000-04-26

Ben K. Green was equally adept at roping a steer, riding a bronc and spinning a yarn. You will feel that you are sitting around his campfire eatin' a mess of good chuck and slapping your sides laughing at one of his longest adventures ever; rounding up a renegade herd of mustangs in Old Mexico, doing the least necessary to make them seem rideable and trail driving them a thousand miles almost single-handedly, hoping to be able to sell them at a time when money was very tight. Along the way, you will meet some assorted colorful characters and witness Ben at his horse-trading best. This is a gem of a story told with lots of humor and a west Texas drawl.

    Book Description

Perhaps more than any other Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, the 1954 decision declaring the segregation of public schools unconstitutional, highlighted both the possibilities and the limitations of American democracy. This collection of sixteen original essays by historians and legal scholars takes the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Brown to reconsider the history and legacy of that landmark decision. From the Grassroots to the Supreme Court juxtaposes oral histories and legal analysis to provide a nuanced look at how men and women understood Brown and sought to make the decision meaningful in their own lives.

The contributors illuminate the breadth of developments that led to Brown, from the parallel struggles for social justice among African Americans in the South and Mexican, Asian, and Native Americans in the West during the late nineteenth century to the political and legal strategies implemented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (naacp) in the twentieth century. Describing the decision’s impact on local communities, essayists explore the conflict among African Americans over the implementation of Brown in Atlanta’s public schools as well as understandings of the ruling and its relevance among Puerto Rican migrants in New York City. Assessing the legacy of Brown today, contributors analyze its influence on contemporary law, African American thought, and educational opportunities for minority children.

The Green Mile is creatively packaged as a six-part series of small paperbacks--serial fiction for a new age. The story, set during the Great Depression, tells of John Coffey, an African American convicted of rape and murder who awaits his death in a Southern prison. Coffey has strange powers, and the creepy characters in the prison have their own views of his gifts, and of God's. The mystery is enhanced by the succession of installments.

5 out of 5 stars Part 6 in The Green Mile Serialization.......2003-05-07

"Coffey on the Mile" is the longest book in the series (130+ pages), while the other five had averaged approximately 90 pages. In this sixth and final installment in The Green Mile serialization, the true identity of the twins' killer is revealed (though I won't give that away, because it's a shocker). Plus, the killer and Percy Wetmore (the evil prison guard), at last(!), get what they deserve. And as for John Coffey: well, that was just a tear-jerker. I won't give away what happens to him either. You just have to read the series--or just this book, if you want to skip the rest.

In the afterword, King points out some of his anachronisms in the series, like whether or not certain radio programs were broadcast in 1932. These "mistakes" were still left in the serial novel, as far as I can tell, even though King had considered removing them. But what was removed was this afterword, as well as the foreword in book #1 ("The Two Dead Girls"); so there were a few things altered by the end.

5 out of 5 stars Coffey On The Mile.......2002-05-22

This book is the sixth and final book of the Green Mile series. I like this book the best out of all six of the books. In this book, the main character John Coffey is getting ready to go down the Green Mile. The Green Mile is the inmateýs last walk down the main hallway, which is green, to the electric chair before they die. The prison guards discovered that John in actuality didnýt kill the Deterick twins, but was actually trying to save them but wasnýt successful. See, the reason why John is in prison is because he was found with the two small Deterick girls, which are twins, in his arms. They were both dead in his arms all alone in the woods. So just naturally, it looked as if he was the one that had killed the twins. When John was arrested he didnýt say a single word, he didnýt deny it or anything. He was quite most of the time he was in prison. The prison guards found out that a previously executed inmate was the one who had killed the twins, and John was just trying to save them. John has a special power that he has for healing and bringing things back to life. He cured one of the prison guards urinary infection, brought a mouse back to life that an inmate killed, and rid the wardenýs wife of cancer, all just by the touch of his hands. So therefore, Coffey tried to save the little girls lives, but he couldnýt. John was too late to get to them in enough time to save their lives. So he just sat holding them in his arms on the rock crying. The prison guards that knew the truth about John and asked him if he wanted them to try and get another trial for him, but Coffey declined the request. Coffey said that his time has come, and even if he was able to get out of it, he didnýt think he wanted to live anymore anyways. He was sick of the way everyone treated each other and he just couldnýt stand it anymore. So Coffey was executed two days after they found out he was innocent. He went quietly and cooperatively. After the time they spent with this man John Coffey, not another man like him would ever come across their presence.

This book was definitly a thrill. I didn't read the first five but this book was interesting. It was about an innocent african-amerian who was acused of raping and murdering two girls. He in fact, was innocent and got helped out by a guard at the penetentiary. I will leave the ending up to you. I do recommend this book to anyone who is interested in suspense and thrill. It is fairly easy.

4 out of 5 stars The Green mile.......2000-04-06

So far I'm about 2/3 of the book and I'm loving every single moment of it. How Stephen King grabs your attention. It about an African-American convicted of rape and murder of two young girls. People are convicnce that he murdered them looking by the size of him. He big as a giant and has the mind of a child. He is sent to a Penitentiary where he about to be executed when a prison guard believe he is an innocent man. He believe the convicted man is innocent, so he investigate his files and starting questioning people about the murder. And the only way he could be free is by the prison Guards. I would recommend this book because talk about the struggle between life or death and how mysteries get involves trying to solve the case.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply put...Wow.......2000-01-18

With this novel, King concludes the wonderful The Green Mile series, and he does this with mastery and excellence. The anguish of Coffey's fate will bring the reader to tears, and the fact that he is going to die for a crime he did not commit is truly heartbreaking. In addition, the destinies of all the other main characters will engross the reader.

The Green Mile is a book that has captivated this reader, and I couldn't wait to continue this fantastic series and discover the newest secrets and see how the story unfolded. What King has done here is indescribable, and it can only be hoped that the movie rendition can live up to the phenomenal The Green Mile.

In "Night Journey," Paul Edgecombe and a couple of his guard buddies take John Coffey from his prison cell for a short time, bringing him to a woman with an inoperable brain tumor, who they hope Coffey can heal. At the beginning of this book, Paul and his buddies also discuss the rape-murder Coffey had been convicted of, but it's not sorted out until the next and final book in this series: "Coffey on the Mile."

    5 out of 5 stars A Class Act Narration.......2003-03-21

I've encountered this work in three different media: book, movie and audio tape. All three are excellent, but my favorite is the audio version, due to Frank Muller's excellence as narrator and story teller. He and George Guidall are the best in the business. Unfortunately Muller was involved in an automobile accident some time ago and is now incapacitated to the point he can no longer work.

The audiobook is an abridgement, true, and I normally don't go in for such, yet the editors did a good job here in winnowing down the text and leaving all the important elements of the book. I notice that there is now an unabridged version, recorded by the same narrator.

The Green Mile is one of King's better efforts and deeper textually than his Shawshank Redemption (his other well-known prison tale). He really excells here in terms of characterization, which can be on the thin side (no Thinner pun intended) in some of his novels.

What really makes this audio experience special, though, is Muller. It's doubtful that he will be able to return to recording, which is a real shame. The Green Mile is one of the finest testaments to this great reader. Another recommendation I would urge upon listeners is his rendition of Cormac McCarthy's classic, All the Pretty Horses.

I own all, 6 volumes on tape there all, good the movie is, good too read the green mile, it's good enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars If it's King, it's gotta be good.......2000-03-23

Just paint me stupid. When I found this title in a Stephen King search, it was originally just listed as NIGHT JOURNEY #5. *duh* I failed to put 2 and 2 together and thought this was an early release of King's that wasn't yet in my collection. Luckily amazon has updated the listing to indicate that it is #5 in the GREEN MILE series. The description also states that this is of unknown binding. The one I ordered is in hard cover which is actually not that bad considering that I only have the paperback series. Order only if you are a diehard King fan who has to have everything in hard cover. I have to rate it a 5 because, hey, it's King and it's part of the GREEN MILE series which is an incredible body of writing.

5 out of 5 stars Depressing, but better then 'horror.".......1999-08-11

The book is every bit as good as I thought it would be (King does much more now than mere "horror", but I found it terribly depressing and I'm not altogether sure I'm glad I read it. Oh, the bad guys come to most satisfying ends, but I took little comfort from that; the author's message appears to be that some people live much too long but no one, good or evil, gets out of this cruel world alive....

I enjoyed this second installment of "The Green Mile" very much & left me wanting to hurry into the next book.

4 out of 5 stars Part 2 in The Green Mile Serialization.......2003-04-26

Even though "The Mouse on the Mile" is an entertaining second addition to The Green Mile serialization, it backtracks a bit in time, before John Coffey came to the E Block. The mouse (Steamboat Willy, later known as Mr. Jingles) is spotlighted a little more, as well the electrocution of one of the inmates, known as The Chief. I didn't mind either topics, but I was more interested in John Coffey's story, since it had just started to unravel in the first book, "The Two Dead Girls", then was all but skipped in this one. Great cliffhanger at the end, though, which will make readers eager to read the next book and the next--"Coffey's Hands" (#3), "The Bad Death of Eduard Delacroix" (#4), "Night Journey" (#5), and "Coffey on the Mile" (#6).

Harking back to the early days of the novel, The Green Mile is being published in six monthly installments. It's a great idea for a writer like Stephen King, famous for page-turning, nail-biting suspense. Like his earlier book The Shawshank Redemption, which became a hit movie, this one is set inside a prison; the title refers to the green-linoleum-covered corridor leading from death row to the electric chair. The narrator is an appealing prison superintendent, puzzled by the arrival of the enigmatic John Coffey, a huge, gentle, silent man accused of a double child rape-murder. Did he do it? Is the vicious guard going to do something awful, or have something done to him? Read the next installment.

    4 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2006-10-12

I really enjoyed reading "Coffey's Hands" (The Green Mile) by Stephan King. The genre of this book is serial thriller. It is part three of a six part novel. It is a great example of how King can write. He kept me reading and wanting to know what would happen next."Coffey's Hands" has alot of action. It is a very violent story. It also has some bad words.
"Coffey's Hands" is about a man named Paul Edgecombe who is now very old and living in a nursing home.he often thinks back to his earlier years when he was a guard at a penitentairy. There he watched over inmates. One inmate in perticular was John Coffey. He was a huge man who was accused of murdering two little girls. Many fights go on in the cells> One fight ended up with one person having a chain around their neck.
I recommend this book to ages 13 and up because of the violence and bad words. I think this book is good for people who like thrillers. I also recommend this book to people who want to be a guard.

    5 out of 5 stars Another quicky..........2004-03-08

I've enjoyed the way this story is in part's. It has helped in me getting throught it much faster than I normally would. The fact the storie is VERY good help's too!!!! I would recommend this serie's to reader's of any age.

4 out of 5 stars Part 3 in The Green Mile Serialization.......2003-04-26

The first chapter in "Coffey's Hands" strays from the cliffhanger in the previous book ("The Mouse on the Mile"), which is a little aggravating if you're reading The Green Mile in chapbook form, from book to book. In this first chapter, Paul Edgecombe is shown in his current retirement home, before the book picks up where part two left off--with William "Wild Bill" Wharton arriving at Cold Mountain Penitentiary and nearly killing one of the guards. He certainly lives up to his wild name in this book.

Then the reader learns of John Coffey's healing gift, which he uses on Paul to cure his urinary infection. Paul later does a little investigation into John's past, though nothing new is revealed.

This book has a great cliffhanger, just like the previous book, though this one is a little sad. If you enjoyed "Coffey's Hands," then you'll want to start with the first two--"The Two Dead Girls" (#1) and "The Mouse on the Mile" (#2)--and continue with the remaining three: "The Bad Death of Eduard Delacroix" (#4), "Night Journey" (#5), and "Coffey on the Mile" (#6). Or, better yet, just get The Green Mile novel.

    5 out of 5 stars FAN 4 LIFE.......2000-01-15

This book is an emotional roller coaster. At first we're faced with an enormous black man named John Coffey on death row-also known as the green mile- who is awaiting execution for the rape and murder of seven year old twin sisters. As the story goes on, John's God given gift to heal the sick and his telepathic powers convince the guards of his innocents. The man in charge of "The Green Mile", Paul Edgecombe is left to choose between killing one of God's Miracles and keeping his job. The ending is a real tear jerker.

4 out of 5 stars Coffey's Hands continues the Green Mile excellence.......2000-01-06

Stephen King has continued The Green Mile with the latest installment, the incredible Coffey's Hands. The examination of prison life in the 1930's is still explored, along with interpersonal frictions of the prisoners and guards, but something new has been introduced. A violent, uncaring, and evil inmate has come to Cold Mountain Penitentiary, and quickly creates anarchy. Also, the strange powers of another inmate are revealed, just prior to a visit to the home of a man that reveals more of this inmate's past. Therefore, many mystery's are solved, while new ones are created, adding to The Green Mile: Coffey's Hands excellence. Overall, King's third part of The Green Mile is another masterpiece that adds to the series.
