Customer Reviews:
Unexpected.......2007-06-28
I am not sure what I expected when I purchased this book, but as I have read all of the other Carpathian novels, I decided to read this one. I was surprised, to say the least, by the wonderful humor in this novel. There were places where I actually laughed out loud...and never did I expect to feel sorry for Gregori, but I did. This book brings back together some of my favorite characters. Gabriel and Francesca, Lucian and Jaxon, Gregori and Savannah, Nicolae and Destiny...and my absolute favorites Natalya and Vikirnoff. This book provides some answers to the problems the Carpathian people are facing, yet also provides them with the knowledge that they are facing a nearly over-powering adversary. If you are a fan of the Carpathian novels, this one is essential to your collection.
Awesome Appetizer !!!.......2007-06-26
Book Description: The blood-drinking, mind-reading, shape-shifting Carpathian clan and their human friends gather for Christmas--and to stave off encroaching enemies. The guests hunt vampires, confront a dark mage and, most importantly, face the extinction of their species due to a mysteriously low birth rate and high infant mortality. For years, they have been persecuted by their enemies, and have struggled against all odds to preserve their species. Now, a new insidious plot has been devised-one that would slaughter Carpathian females and bring an end to all that the Carpathians have worked for. Even with his own lifemate, Raven, and their daughter Savannah, in danger, Carpathian king Mikhail believes that all is not lost. Gathering all of his people together, he will forge a new bond of strength, joining their powers in a celebration that will bring light even in this dark time.
I borrowed this book from the library and had it in my possession for a week before reading it. I told a friend of mine, who is now reading this series after I introduced her to it, that I was not going to read the book. As a newbie to this series, and the genre, I was afraid this book would be to "vampire" or too "dark" for me. I "sampled" it, read little bits here and there, decided to read it, and absolutely loved it. In this book, fans of the series can revisit previous characters, are introduced to new ones, are brought up-to-date on what's going on with the Carpathian species in general, while setting the stage for future books. Fans revisit bound couples and anticipate future life-matches: Mikhail & Raven / Jacques & Shea / Gregori & Savannah / Aidan & Alexandria / Julian & Desari / Darius & Tempest / Gabriel & Francesca / Skyler / Lucian & Jaxon / Dayan & Corrinne / Barack & Syndil / Byron & Antoinetta / Falcon & Sara / Traian & Joie / Vikirnoff & Natalya / Nicolae & Destiny / MaryAnn / Riordan & Juliette / Rafael & Colby / Manolito & MaryAnn / Dimitri & Skyler, etc.
While an excellent read on its own, this appetizer laid the ground work for two potentially amazing stories involving two incredible warriors and the remarkable lifemates that they both served long & hard for and truly deserve. Dimitri was so-o-o tortured he stole my heart. For centuries he honorably did everything asked of a Carpathian warrior - all alone, many of the others had siblings at least. For nature to play such a cruel trick on him was almost unimaginable. He was a tremendous warrior, yet the manner in which he handled the situations that occurred, as well as the actions of others involved was inspiring. He showed patience, courage, acceptance, and empathy. I loved the way he stopped Skyler from withdrawing when she would have reverted into her old pattern of hiding causing me to wonder if he will succeed where others have failed in getting her to face her past and embrace her future. Manolito was an awesome warrior with a strong sense of honor; humorous and almost child-like at times with his games of hide & seek; the physical description of him is very appealing to say the least; and fact that he will have an invigorating "shot of coffee" in his life is, to me, very exciting. His story just has to be tremendous. I ordered a copy of "Dark Celebration; pre-ordered "Dark Possession"; and can't wait to read the stories of both couples.
Visit the Carpathians for the Holidays!.......2007-06-13
Several people have reviewed this book so I will be brief. The story is simple, Mikhail Dubrinsky, Prince of the Carpathians and his lifemate, Raven are the hosts for a Christmas Celebration in the mountains of Romania. Torn between Carpathian ways and human holiday traditions, Mikhail struggles to solve his peoples problem with infant mortality, female infertility, battles with vampires, and threats on his life by unseen evil forces.
The novel is filled with Carpathian hunters protecting their lifemates and children, while some are trying to find their "loves" to prevent them from becoming what they hunt, pure evil (vampires).
Several characters are introduced and revisited, great battles are fought, lifemates are revealed (Savannah & MaryAnn), their magic and powers, as well as the normal Feehan sex scenes keep the reader drawn into Mikhail's world, as he shoulders the future of his people.
Criticisms: (1) It wasn't really a stand along book. Because I have only read one other Dark Hunter book (Dark Demon), I was not familiar with all of the characters or the storylines. This was definately a continuing story, and the door to future books was left wide open. Also, (2) there was a great deal of build-up to the much anticipated Christmas Celebration only to have it only last a couple of pages.
Pluses: (1) There will be future books. (2) There were some extremely funny scenes between the "big bad" hunters and their lifemates (who were long ago humans) who are trying to prepare meals for their human friends. Difficult because they no longer eat or practice the art of cooking. The combustible pies, jerky leather roasts, etc. leave you smiling. And finally, the storyline of how the Prince is planning on having his son-in-law, Grigori (AKA the Grouch and scary healer of the Carpathian people) play the role of Santa Claus (tights and all) is extremely funny (look for scene where all the hunters show up in the form of insects to watch!). I also enjoyed (3) the storyline of Savannah, who is a troubled teen with a disturbing past (which is revealed at the end of the book and you shouldn't be surprised who her father is). I also liked the fact that she will prove to be one Carpathian's salvation (Dimitri) when she grows to accept her role as lifemate. And finally, (4) the storyline involving MaryAnn (City girl turned Carpathian and counselor to troubled women) is extremely intriguing and although she is only mentioned towards the end of the story, and I can't wait to find out how she will be claimed by her lifemate (who is identified in this book, but I ain't telling).
So give Dark Celebration a chance. It will be worth it.
Not a vampire novel.......2007-05-18
Let me begin by saying if you are looking for a vampire novel, stop right here. Carpathians and vampires are like roosters and chickens - all roosters are chickens but not all chickens are roosters. Well, all vampires are Carpathians, but not all Carpathians are vampires. What you will get with Dark Celebration is one of Christine Feehans best of the Dark Series. The series introduces the reader to a race of people that are several steps above human with very different views on life and love. They cherish women and children above all else and are very protective of them. Living for centuries has it's drawbacks and the males are constantly fighting their turning vampire. There is only one true lifemate for each male and some have waited several centuries for theirs.
From the very first book, Dark Prince, the reader begins to feel a connection to these people. They become almost like family. The characters are connected as family or friends and most appear in more than one book. Dark Celebration is a reunion of about seventeen of these Carpathians that we have met in the other books in the series.
Although they must remain always on alert for their enemies, both human and vampire, Dark Celebration sees the Carpathians in a different light than any of the other books in the series. They relax more and the reader sees more humor and everyday life for this race other than fighting vampires. A family game of touch football played with a very overdone turkey, many mishaps with the efforts of cooking the Christmas dinner and even Gregori,(The Dark One) contributes to the light heartedness of the story when his father-in-law, Price Mikhail, issues the order for him to play Santa Clause for the children.
Since the theme of this book is different than the others, read a few or all of the previous books and then read Dark Celebration. You will have more background, a better grasp on the charactrers and will enjoy the book all the more.
Celebration Oh Yeah!.......2007-05-16
I'll rush to buy ANY book that has Christine Feehan's name on it! She is my very Favorite paranormal author because I feel that I know every one of her people. they are so believable and realistic, I'm always lookinjg for new ones written by her. I love the Carpathians all!

Customer Reviews:
I Think Kathy Bates May Have Ordered This MISERY.......2005-09-24
I was so eager to read the Dark Reunion because the entire series up until this point had been nothing short of amazing. As I waited for the last book to arrive, I couldn't help but skim over a few reviews, most of which were not that positive. Oh, how I should've listened to the warnings. This book was AWFUL! I enjoyed it up until the point Damon decided to disappear for a few chapters (he and Bonnie are my favorite characters).
I was never a big Elena fan and I still don't quite understand why all the other characters in the story seemed to love her so much. She was only interesting based on her association with those around her who actually HAD personalities. That's the one thing I can say I appreciated about book 4- her 'sort of' absence. I also really enjoyed the triangle that was sort of developing btwn Bonnie, Matt and Damon (hopefully if I'm lucky, L.J. will introduce a spin-off that delves more into that delicious storyline). Anyway, Damon leaves and the book suddenly takes a sorry turn. I wish the author would've referenced her previous material, because based on what was revealed at the end of book 3, the villian that appears in the following book doesn't really make much sense. At least offer an argument against Katherine's claim. As if that weren't enough, just when I thought things couldn't be more silly or move any faster, tah-dah-Elena appears once again, but fereal this time and all is well with the world, I guess? I love how the author neglected to enlighten the reader on how (though more importantly WHY) this sudden manifestation occurs. Yet, for some reason I got the feeling that L.J. herself didn't care while writing this one. There was no passion involved. In fact, the last couple of chapters were almost like a big SCREW YOU to all those who were not satisfied with the conclusion of The Fury. And you know what the saddest part is? I was not only prepared for it, I WANTED someone to die, and I couldn't decide btwn Meredith or Stefan.
I will not recommend that devoted readers NOT read this book, because that wouldn't be fair of me. However, if you should decide to read my review before doing so, you cannot hold me accountable for any displeasure you are likely to experience after reading this Dark Disappointment.
No comparison to the first three........2005-05-11
Unless you're the kind of person who cannot stand to read a book without a happy ending...don't bother. The resurection of Elena is contrived...and it seems like it's just an effort to capitalize on the (well deserved) success of the first three novels. and um, it's a trilogy. why are there four books? It doesn't always make sense, and is pretty pointless. Don't beat a dead horse...this book proves it, even if they don't stay dead, it's just not a good idea.
a book that is out of this world!!!.......2005-05-06
this book was g8 but i thought it was to short. elena comes bak rite at the end i want to no wot hapens next. so L.J.Smith is there gonna a next book and if so whens does it come out? im dieing to no!!!!!!
Absolutely wonderful.......2004-07-31
Even with distractions, I read this book in about 4 hours. It was totally awesome. I was thinking that the ending would be another one that I'd be totally dissatisfied with(*cough cough* "Pearl of the Soul of the World" from the 'Dark Angel Trilogy' *cough cough*), but it's refreshing to see that love can WIN! Here's a spoiler though. I just wonder, is Elena a vampire still or is she human at the end. And did everybody end up seeing her goodies? That's what it seemed like when they kept talking about her being naked. Either way, if you like vampires and want an interesting read, then you absolutely need to pick up this saga.
The imagery L.J Smith uses is totally amazing. I was turned onto her first from reading the Nightworld series, but I find the Vampire Diaries to be more well written. Maybe it's because she has about 1200 pages to dedicate to one story rather than a couple hundred for 10 different scenarios and dozens of characters. I give it 4 stars because there were a few points where I felt that it was dragging and I was upset that we didn't even hear of the vampire brothers again until page 60. Damon was also a great character and I felt that he sort of went by the waist side. I didn't like at all how he just walked away. Not to mention, I think he and Bonnie would have been better together than Bonnie and Matt (thank goodness nothing was technically official with that though). I wanted to see a female personality counter his, one that wasn't Elena. He just didn't get enough attention to me. When you read the cover of the book, you read about Stefan, Damon, and Elena and you don't see as much as you should, I think.
Also, I thought the ending was a little rushed. It was like "Ok, Klaus is gone. Now we get to bring Elena back to life woo hoo." It just wasn't working for me and seems sort of out of the blue. Still, I was so happy for Stefan that I'll let it slide.
This is a depressing saga though. So much sadness and anger and hatred. I mean, the love in it was wonderful, but still, you can't ignore all the dreariness.
Also, I found myself predicting it was Klaus before I even opened the book. Just like by the second book, I was expecting Katherine to be the real bad guy. It was just a feeling I had. I think the first book was my favorite, but I totally loved Damon in the second one. He rocked in the third too. See, the problem is, it's hard to rank them. Also, since I have read them all together, it's hard to split up what happened in what. I just know that this volume was my least favorite, but for me to still give it 4 stars says a LOT because I still couldn't put it down.
A Let Down From the Previous Three.......2004-01-12
Dark Reunion was a let down from the previous three and seems out of place. Firstly, the main plot is recovering from Elena's death. However, a new evil is brooding in town. Elena contacts Bonnie from beyond to get Stefan and Damon's help to stop the new evil.
What was mainly disappointing about this 4th book was that it was mainly told from the point of Bonnie. There's hardly anything on Elena who hardly plays a part. There's very little of the remaining Elena-Stefan-Damon conflict left and the plot is predictable. A lot is unexplained at the end, so basically this book left a lot to be desired.
I really wished they had a 5th book which could finally resolve the Elena-Stefan-Damon thing and explain what happened at the end of Dark Reunion.

this book is not magic.......2003-04-28
this doen't start that bad. a family moves to a town of pagan heritage. something hidden "wants to come out". the son get attracted to the heritage, and the mother gets worried. but in the end, the whole book ends up in tedious naive descriptions of magic done in a boring way. i really don't mind magic in horror, but this is done here in such an uninteresting and naive way. mediocre.
Great fun and a great read for horror fans........2001-03-02
This is another favorite of mine from Stephen R. George. After an accidental shooting, a cop tries to piece his life back together by moving his family out of the city and back to his hometown. Things are not as they seem, however, and the towns people have a bizarre secret about their heritage and some dark force in the woods. Mr. George's love for the genre and his storytelling ability really shines in this one. I've picked it up several times since the first time I read it and the prologue is so captivating and neat, I find myself pulled into it all over again. Great fun and a great read.

Two Fascinating Early Shorts.......2004-08-23
Before Mamet was Mamet, with the staccato dialogue and repetitive dialogue, and before he got knee-deep into genre writing and film-making, these two plays were written.
REUNION (1M 1F, 43 pgs and multiple scenes) is the story of a father re-establishing contact with his estranged daughter. It is written in a sort of blank verse which is possibly what caused Edith Olvier to praise it in The New Yorker as "a poem for two voices -- a distinguished and remarkable one." It is certainly distinguished from Mamet's later work, the plot as it is having very little forward momentum. But it is quite moving and excellent and a great soft introduction for actors who want to learn to 'speak Mamet.'
DARK PONY (1M 1childF, 10 pgs) is another father/daughter story and possibly the simplest play I've ever read. It seems to be informed by Bruno Bettleheim's ideas about the power of stories told to children set forth in THE USES OF ENCHANTMENT, a book that Mamet has acknowledged as having great influence on him. The story is this: as the father and daughter drive home (from where, we don't know), he passes the time by telling her a fairy-tale-like story about a handsome brave and the eponymous pony. The subtext of the tale is: everything will be okay. Like I said, it is a simple play, but I imagine it can be quite moving in performance.
Longtime fans of Mamet will want to read this to see a completely different side of the maestro; Mamet virgins will find this collection an easy way to get into Mamet. Those in between might prefer to work their way through the AMERICAN BUFFALOs and SPEED-THE-PLOWs before turning back to the start of it all.
