Book Description
Absurd philosophies, dark surrealism, and the end of the human race . . .
God hates you. All of you. He closed the gates of Heaven and wants you to rot on Earth forever. Not only that, he is repossesing your souls and feeding them to a large vagina-like machine called the Walm - an interdimensional doorway that brings His New Children into the world. He loves these new children, but He doesn't love you. They are more interesting than you. They are beautiful, psychotic, magical, sex-crazed, and deadly. They are turning your cities into apocalyptic chaos, and there's nothing you can do about it ...
Featuring: a narrator who sees his body from a third-person perspective, a man whose flesh is dead but his body parts are alive and running amok, an overweight messiah, the personal life of the Grim Reaper, lots of classy sex and violence, and a motley group of squatter punks that team up with the devil to find their place in a world that doesn't want them anymore.

Customer Reviews:
A Bizarro Cult Classic.......2007-06-25
It's hard to believe that this extremely weird book has actually sold over 100,000 copies. Most offbeat novels never make their way out of the underground. What isn't hard to believe is that Satan Burger has become one of the biggest cult classics in recent years. Carlton Mellick III is the perfect author to read if you are looking for something unusual and crazy. He wrote Satan Burger when he was 20 years old. It is definitely filled with the passion of a 20-year-old, but written with the talent of an author twice his age. His later "children's books for adults" are even better, but if you are looking for a postmodern punk sci-fi fantasy satire brimming with imagination and raw talent, then look no further. I especially recommend this to readers in their late teens and early twenties who haven't been able to find books they can relate to.
Not one of Mellick's best, the prequel to Punk Land.......2007-05-23
Heaven is closed. In it's place there is the Walm, a oddly shaped gateway between dimensions that regularly spews out strange creatures, guarded by fish beings with large brains.
Our protagonist, Leaf, had God-Eyes and can see himself in third person. His friends Mort, Nan, Vodka, Christian, and Gin (who's dead but still animate, and names his independent hand 'Breakfast') each have their own special problems. They all go to work at Satan Burger in exchange for souls.
Satan has opened a burger chain called Satan Burger, serves at the counter wearing a Gay Pride T-shirt. But he wants humans to work for him rather than the daemon-possessed inanimate objects already employed.
Leaf reads the life-book of one Richard Stein instead of the bible, Leaf becomes the pregnant wife of a four-year-old blue woman (who mature at two years old), and Leaf meets Jesus at the old Satan Burger site. What more could a person want out of life?
If the gay Satan from South Park makes you laugh, Mellick's Satan will crack you up too. 'Satan Burger' is a disjointed, trippy tale of apocalyptic proportions. It's the end of the world, in a uniquely written way. While I didn't find this book as interesting as Mellick's later works, it still fills a notch in your bizarro collection. The cover art alone is enough to turn away the average consumer. Read Punk Land afterward as a sequel. Enjoy!
Lots of fun :-).......2007-04-03
I really enjoy Mellick's ability to make me question humanity one moment then laugh hysterically out loud the next.
Bad Writing That Is Good..........2006-11-23
This book is more appropriately categorized as a work of art than a work of literature in much the same way as a portrait by Picasso is "art" and not a "painting".
If you pick up this book expecting traditional writing, sentence or paragraph structures and plot lines, then you'll only be disappointed. In fact, your final analysis will be summed up by the following phrase, "What the F***?". But if you have an appreciation for the unstructured, irregular and avant-garde, then Satan Burger provides for a relatively satisfying meal.
The writing is in a raw, amateurish, in-your-face, stream-of-consciousness style that at times can enhance the story and at other times detract from it. Style and grammar aside, it's the story and peculiar characters that hold the book together, compel the reader forward and prevents the book from being dismissed as trash.
Satan opens a burger stand as a means to duping people out of their souls. A band of punks hire on at Satan Burger in order to protect their own souls. In an ironic twist of fate, we learn that Satan is plagued with quasi-comical personal issues that make his life miserable - homosexuality, everything he touches dies, job security. The punks are content to do Satan's dirty work in order to discover a way out of their dying world. The interactions and happenings along the way give the reader plenty of opportunities to think, laugh, wince and sometimes want to the throw the book in the gutter.
When you finish Satan Burger, read Punk Land next - It picks up where Satan Burger leaves off. However, in Punk Land the characters and stories are much more fully developed and the writing shows definite signs of maturation.
Mellick's books will never appeal to the general public - they defy most literary conventions (purposely or not, you be the judge) and delve into topics that many would consider too coarse or vulgar. In this regard, Satan Burger sets the Mellick standard.
Satan Burger can be enjoyed by the reader who is willing to set aside what he/she knows about good writing thereby allowing his/her self to absorb bad writing that is good.
Wow - Satan Burger Rocks.......2006-10-05
This book is amazing. I won't compare Carlton Mellick III to other authors, because though there are some stylistic similarities, no other author that I have read has spoken to me so succinctly. This book is terrific on so many levels. Satan Burger conveys a message that is both universal and relevant to current cultural trends and the social climate.
