Book Description

In the debut crime novel from the Booker-winning author, a Dublin pathologist follows the corpse of a mysterious woman into the heart of
a conspiracy among the city’s high Catholic society
It’s not the dead that seem strange to Quirke. It’s the living. One night, after a few drinks at an office party, Quirke shuffles down into the morgue where he works and finds his brother-in-law, Malachy, altering a file he has no business even reading. Odd enough in itself to find Malachy there, but the next morning, when the haze has lifted, it looks an awful lot like his brother-in-law, the esteemed doctor, was in fact tampering with a corpse—and concealing the cause of death.

It turns out the body belonged to a young woman named Christine Falls. And as Quirke reluctantly presses on toward the true facts behind her death, he comes up against some insidious—and very well-guarded—secrets of Dublin’s high Catholic society, among them members of his own family.

Set in Dublin and Boston in the 1950s, the first novel in the Quirke series brings all the vividness and psychological insight of Booker Prize winner John Banville’s fiction to a thrilling, atmospheric crime story. Quirke is a fascinating and subtly drawn hero, Christine Falls is a classic tale of suspense, and Benjamin Black’s debut marks him as a true master of the form.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written..........2007-07-01

John Banville (here writing as Benjamin Black) is a beautiful writer. I read his "Untouchable" almost a decade ago and I still recall images and descriptions from it. His prose is not showy or overt. As you read and a turn of phrase, image, or unfamiliar adjective comes along, you stop and reread a line or two, and realize just how well-crafted every sentence is.

As Banville enters the mystery genre, he brings along all his literary skills and 'Christine Falls' is yet another beautifully written novel. That said, the novel, as a mystery novel, is surprisingly conventional. Banville/Black's tale is drawn from the Magdalen Laundries; which are now well known through film, a Joni Mitchell song and other sources. So the setting for the mystery seems recycled, not fresh, really. The plot takes us from Ireland to Boston, and I expected a bit of a existential rif on the connections between the two cities. Didn't get it, per se.

There are breathtaking descriptions, wry observations, interesting, even compelling characters -- most impressive is Quirke, the main and said to be recurring character. A well written, literary mystery that interests and repays the reader's effort. But somewhat conventional, all told. Some say that the first in a series of mystery/crime novels is often a bit of a disappointment. The writer may not hit his/her stride until the characters have spent more time under the pen. Perhaps here too. I do await the next Black mystery, but not with baited breath (which for now is reserved for Tana French and a hopeful sequel to her excellent "In The Woods.") Check out: In the Woods

Not all that great. A little slow at times. The characters were pretty believable and well drawn but some of the situations were pretty unbelievable. I thought it fell kind of flat.

5 out of 5 stars For the narrator 's voice.......2007-06-20

I am not an expert, but the voice of Timothy Dalton is one this voice you can not forget (like one of this french comedian with marvellous voices that I recognize immediately as soon as I hear them ). This is my first choice, and i want to buy the book for understand more the history. But only the voice of Timothy Dalton is a wonderful experience for this admirors.

3 out of 5 stars Mystery Elements Need Work.......2007-06-08

"Christine Falls: A Novel," is the first crack at writing a mystery by the Irish author John Banville, a winner of the prestigious British Booker Prize, under the pen name Benjamin Black. It's set in the stultifying, socially stratified Dublin of the 1950's, where upper and lower classes, Protestants and Catholics, never shall mix, and the Catholic Church holds great social, moral, and legal power.

At its heart are two grown stepbrothers, Quirke and Malachy Griffin, Malachy the biological son of the eminent Judge Griffin; Quirke the adopted one, and the favorite. Quirke's the City's pathologist, with a drinking problem; Malachy's the City's outstanding obstetrician. (When the brothers were in medical school in Boston, both fell in love with the same wealthy American girl; she picked Malachy. Quirke then married her sister, who died shortly thereafter in childbirth.) The brothers, also brothers-in-law, have somehow struggled along together ever since.

The book opens as the Judge is made a Knight of the Church, a high honor, indeed. And the drunken Quirke, stumbling home from a party at the hospital where both brothers work, finds Malachy where he shouldn't be-- in Quirke's Morgue office, altering the file of Christine Falls, a pretty young servant, recently dead. Christine had been employed by the Griffin family; and, as Quirke finds himself reluctantly drawn into investigation of her death, his suspicions, unhappily, never seem to fall far from them. He will suffer from his inability to leave the mystery alone, as will others, some more so than him. Quirke's suspicions finally force him to retrace his journey as a young man, and return to Boston, where he will make some discoveries he'll wish he hadn't. The book, to me, did raise some moral issues that the author might not have intended; but I couldn't help thinking of what the story coulda shoulda woulda been had Christine and her child received proper care. But these are not issues relevant to a general interest book review.

Boston and Dublin, 1950's, are excellently drawn and atmospheric, as are the characters of Quirke, Malachy, the judge, Sarah, Malachy's wife whom both brothers loved, and Phoebe, the child of that union. The author writes fluently, powerfully when called for. Black also gives us a character who closely resembles the late, well-known 1950's Irish poet/playwright Brendan Behan, though the writer doesn't do much with him. As for the mystery elements to the story, they need work. The author fudges his timeline, and calls two major characters by the same name, thereby creating some confusion, but most longtime mystery readers will have little doubt of the outcome of Quirke's investigations long before the closing gong.

4 out of 5 stars Pensive and Real.......2007-06-04

Please, no audio books! Maybe you folks commute in big cities and need something thoughtful to help pass the time. That's what I'm going to tell myself. Banville is a Writer, and he must be read. The mystery itself is interesting, and Banville doesn't lose sight of the plot as he carefully builds 1950s Dublin and sets characters and events in motion for his first crime novel--Christine Falls.

I always marvel what a behemoth the Catholic church is--there's a whole category in modern fiction filled with parishes, priests, nuns, and sexual repression. Tim Farrington paints the church as a gin-loving grandma; basically good, with her hennaed hair and breath mints, carrying only a flaw or two. Banville is more, je ne sais quoi, describing an old house. It seems to have weathered many storms and retained a classic beauty; but when one looks closer, one sees that it has sheltered and hidden many dark deeds and has termites in the stairs and deep cracks in the foundation.

The plot is fairly straightforward. A beautiful, blond-haired corpse quickly passes through pathologist Quirke's department. His brother, the obstetrician, is illegally altering the medical record; and although drunk, Quirke recalls the incident and decides to track down the woman's life and kin. Why would a bow-tie wearing, somewhat fastidious, obstetrician like Quirke's brother be taking such a risk. Who Christine Falls is, as well as how she lived and died in these circumstances, leads our hero on a murky quest through dark streets and pubs of Dublin and winds up in Boston.

The characters make the novel. They are enough to make me want to read the next mystery Banville decides to write. I just finished reading a British police procedural, and DCI Serrailler is a construction-paper cutout and not a real man. No flaws, no character, and no third dimension. How different is Mr. Quirke! He drinks too much, smokes when he of all people should know better, and barely keeps depression and dissolution from destroying his life. He's not so bad that we hate him; on the contrary, we hope he has a Redeeming Virtue that will save him and give him a reason to keep on trudging through the remainder of his life.

Quirke's longsuffering brother may be more of a sinner than he lets on. Quirke's sister-in-law is also flawed but heroic as she tries to piece together the mystery wholly apart from Quirke. She doesn't really want to know the answer (as the truth no doubt will lead to her doorstep), but she must.

This is a very nice debut thriller for an otherwise seasoned and rightly-praised Irish author. I strongly recommend Christine Falls.

5 out of 5 stars I miss it.......2007-06-06

This was the required text for the microbiology class I took. I found this book to be very informative and helpful. The class was an introduction to microiology and this book was perfect for it! And I'm sure that, had this book been that bad, the instructor would never have selevte it for the course. My only regret is that I sold it back to the campus bookstore at the end of the semester; I wish I still had this to go back to and look up the information.

2 out of 5 stars Would someone please write another Microbiology Textbook!.......2007-01-12

This is the most poorly written scientific textbook I have ever read. The syntax and overall grammatical structure is so poor, I thought I was reading something written by a junior high school student. What I am writing here is a quick product review, since I really don't want to waste my time, or yours, with specific examples, but there certainly should be other microbiology textbooks that can explain all topics more effectively without the maddening encumbrance of blunted concepts and extraordinarily bad sentence structure. The book is replete with excellent photographs and what appears, prima facie, as excellent concept diagrams to accompany the images. But the book fails in this regard because, again, the context of the writing is bizarre and even elusive. On a comparative level, the author's presentation of module pedagogy is unlike anything I have encountered before. I am a veterinarian, and have studied science and medicine for many, many years. I wanted a Micro textbook that would help me "catch up" with current issues and progress in the field of microbiology. I found this specific text to be an extreme disappointment. If you have to purchase this for a class ... good luck. If you are simply buying it, as a reference ... STOP now, and do some more research.

For the publisher: Are you sure you really want your current editors and reviewers on the payroll?

3 out of 5 stars Need texbook, can obtain...........2007-06-08

I received the book fairly quickly. The book was a little rough around the edges (advertised as good) and it is. The back outside spine was ripped and for that they could have drop the price a little more, but considering the price in the university book store was $118 (new), and $85 (used) - I could live with it. I believe that this is a fair assessment of the site. I would order a book from them again.

1 out of 5 stars Not a helpful text.......2007-05-22

I just completed a class where this textbook was used, and found it to be a particularly poorly written text. I feel that because of this I did not do as well in the class as I had hoped. I am a Liberal Studies major and took this class to satisfy my mathematical requirement. I found the explanations and instructions to be confusing and incomplete. As this book appears to be aimed at individuals such as myself, I would think that simple and clear writing would be paramount for the authors. This proves to not be the case. Instructors, steer clear please.

4 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT REFERENCE FOR BEGINNING & ADVANCED UNDERGRADUATES.......2002-02-07

I have been teaching out of Angel & Porter for the last three years. It has quite a few good examples, though I agree with the first reviewer's comment that it does need more challenging problems.

Among the topics I have covered are: inductive reasoning, set concepts, symbolic logic, truth tables, algebra, applied geometry, probability, statistics, and mathematics of finance. Though the examples are laid out fairly well for those who are mathematically inclined, the teacher who happens to have quite a few students with weak mathematical skills is often finding himself or herself in situations of having to create ways to become an effective expositor of mathematical theorems and applications. In other words, by trying to explain what the authors are providing in their examples, the instructor is frequently shouldering the added burden of making this book come to life not only from a mathematical perspective but also from a communicative standpoint.

On a positive note, however, there are several excellent applications, and the range of topics is quite broad. Oftentimes there is a gap between the level of advanced high school mathematics and that of a four-year university that is so serious that even a student who performed A's in high school will struggle in the type of college math course he or she is placed in. Fortunately, Angel and Porter have been able to fill in quite a few of the missing pieces.

1 out of 5 stars Still incompetent after all these editions.......2002-01-15

A few years ago I wrote a review here on Amazon, of an edition of this text from around 1994. Apparently, only one of eight of those who commented found my review helpful. This new review is an attempt to be more helpful and to address the newer 6th edition.
Correctness is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for quality in mathematics text books. Usually the first condition in a given. The issues then largely become ones of whether or not the book is student friendly, whether it covers appropriate topics and so on. Angel and Porter's *Survey of Mathematics with Applications* fails on the criterion of correctness and hence one could reasonable say that the need for further evaluation on the other issues is moot.
In a circa 1994 edition, discussion on irrational numbers was misleading at best; even if not stated explicitly, the implication was that all reals belonged to a particular proper subset of the algebraic numbers. When I recently started to teach at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), Catonsville, where the text was being used, I immediately turned to discussion of this topic. There on page 214 of this 6th edition, only three paragraphs into my reading, was a fallacy: "The points on the real number line that are not rational numbers are referred to as irrational numbers. Recall that every rational number is either a terminating or a reaping decimal number. *Therefore* [italics mine], irrational numbers, when represented as decimal numbers, will be nonterminating, nonrepeating numbers." All Q are (T or R), *therefore* all that is not Q is not (T or R). Perhaps this could be used as an example in the earlier chapter on logic. Since I was only three paragraphs into my reading of this new edition when I encountered this miscarriage of logic, it made quite an impression on me.
The text is replete with errors where the errors are of such a nature as to suggest that the authors really just aren't that good with math or are extremely careless. Some more examples:
Page 584: "If an event has *equally likely outcomes* [original italics]...," where it should say rather "If every outcome in the sample space is equally likely..."
Since the circa 1994 edition, where there was an error regarding conditional probability and the probability of independent events, the authors seem to have attempted to rescue themselves from embarrassment by insertion of a footnoted remark (page 615), but the presentation makes the most bizarre contortions of meaning, notation and caveats: "P(A and B)=P(A)P(B), assuming that event A has occurred*," the asterisk referring to a footnote where it stated that by 'P(B)' they mean P(B|A). But then what do we call P(A)? But the problem does not end there.
Page 293, exercise 43: The answer in the book fails to take into consideration that the dB scale is logarithmic. Given an inverse square dissipation of sound energy, loudness would increase from 20 dB at 6 feet to 26 dB at 3 feet, not to 80 dB.
Page 49, exercise 16: The answer says zero is not equal to the empty set. But that is the way zero, the smallest ordinal, is defined in modern set theory.
An analogy to falling dominos is often used to illustrate mathematical induction. Why, on page 3, do the authors use a domino analogy to illustrate inductive reasoning? It would be a bad idea to use falling dominos to illustrate inductive reasoning since the same example is classically used to illustrate mathematical induction and the two distinct concepts have similar names and are frequently confounded by students, who incorrectly assume that mathematical induction is a form on inductive reasoning. But I suspect that that the authors themselves are not clear on the distinction. It fits with the evidence. Furthermore, the book gives definitions of inductive and deductive reasoning (pages 3 and 4) that are antiquated and should be dispensed with in favor of common contemporary usage among mathematicians and logicians (see http://www.iep.utm.edu/d/ded-ind.htm for a nice brief discussion on the meaning of inductive and deductive logic).
Often the incorrect content is on non-mathematical subjects:
On page 3: "...no two people have the same fingerprints or DNA." Well, of course, up to mutations, monozygotic twins have the same DNA.
Page 9: "Little mistake, Big Discovery... The red dot represent the area *near America* [italics mine], the Canary Islands, where [Christopher] Columbus landed." Yes, on the map, the dot is closer to where North American should be than it is to Africa. But, I suppose, canaries might migrate. It continues, "He estimated 56.6 miles to a degree instead of the approximately 61.6 miles that it should have been. This resulted in a mile equaling about 4848 ft compared with our 5280 ft per mile. The outcome of this miscalculation put India about 3900 miles west of Spain, more or less where the Americas happen to be." Let's see: (61.6/56.6)*3900 miles = 4245 miles from Spain to India (westward). That's more like it. Of course, the real story is more complicated.
Page 579: "The Royal Disease....even though both males and females are carriers, the disease [hemophilia] afflicts only males." While much more likely to afflicts males, the disease does afflict females inheriting two X clotting deficient chromosomes.
There is a list of over 30 reviewers with six having reviewed the 6th edition. Does anyone care?
I brought a number of these errors to the attention of the Addison Wesley sales representative who deals with our math department. She took notes on the examples I pointed out - I thought to her credit. Apparently she did some investigation of the errors but came back to me saying, "...but the students won't know." Addison Wesley had a tradition of publishing many fine engineering, math and science texts. They appear to have little editorial integrity now, however.
CCBC, Catonsville no longer uses this text. We now use one written by one of the reviewers of the Angel and Porter text, another member of the textbook industry. That book is also published by Addison Wesley and makes the same mistake in defining inductive and deduction reasoning as the Angel/Porter text does. It is my opinion that our department is unduly influence by the Addison Wesley sales representatives.
I'm sure that writing a good textbook is hard work. I have considered writing one myself and no doubt, the first edition will contain some error. But I would not apply a standard of criticism to the text under review that I would feel unfair if applied to myself.
I hope that the reader finds this brief review helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Could use some more problems.......1999-04-27

This book does the job of teaching some mathematics to those with liberal-arts majors. However, over at Wayne State, we are constantly bemoaning the lack of extra problems for students to practice what they have learned (especially in light of the fact that we cover only half of the chapters of this book in a single one semester course). This is especially apparent with the probability and statistics chapters. Overall I can see this text being a commendable effort on the part of Angel and Porter to bring mathematics to those who would normally shun it.

Book Description

Some readers may recognize their mothers as well as themselves in this book. They will also find specific suggestions for creating healthier relationships. Addressing the adult children of borderlines and the therapists who work with them, Dr. Lawson shows how to care for the waif without rescuing her, to attend to the hermit without feeding her fear, to love the queen without becoming her subject, and to live with the witch without becoming her victim.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the Borderline Mother: Helping Her Children Transcend the Intense, Unpredictable, and Volatile Relationship.......2007-06-12

This book provides excellent material on Borderline traits and provides the reader with a sense of "not being or feeling alone or crazed" by the reality of this condition. It is blatantly honest in confronting such behaviors of Borderline Personality Disorder, and yet does not attack the individuals maliciously, but instead tries to evoke an understanding of the origins of such behaviors in a comforting manner. This is a rather lengthy book and is recommended for persons who can dedicate some "quality" time to delving into it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book for Survivors of Borderline Parents.......2007-06-12

I bought this book at the book store and had no idea how healing it would be for me. I could not put this book down and found for the first time a book that simply acknowleged the pain and darkest despair that is felt by having a BPD mother. The difficulty with this disorder is no one really knows what it is like or believes someone could be so unpredictable and dangerous. The even sadder thing is that it messes with the thinking of each child within a family of this person and it is passed on. It is a very sick disease and I believe we need more knowlege on this subject for both children still with these parents and those of us recovering our souls.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased!.......2007-06-08

I was very very pleased with my purchase. I was not expecting to receive it as quickly as I did! My only wish is that it didn't cost so much.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable For Understanding Borderline Parents of Either Gender.......2007-04-19

I agree completely with the positive reviews of this book: Christine Lawson's masterful use of Jungian archetypes is helpful beyond belief in enabling those of us who are dealing with BPD parents to understand the various forms that the disorder takes. If any mood disorder does not lend itself to a one-size-fits-all classification, it's BPD.

However, for those of us who were unlucky enough to have been raised by two Borderline parents, I would like to add that Lawson's archetypes apply equally well to both genders. While reading the book, I was struck by how often I could change the pronouns and see the behaviors of both my father and my mother fall into too-vivid relief. Although there are roughly three times more female than male Borderlines, it's important to remember that there appears to be very little difference in the way that both present their disorder to those around them.

5 out of 5 stars Eye opening........2007-04-10

This book is good for those who understand BPD, but great for those who do not.

My Psychologist recommended this book to me. I ordered it the next day and received it within the week. It has helped me tremendously. I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from depression or any other mood disorder. I would also suggest that a loved one of someone described above read this book also.

After years of therapy that helped a little, this book finally transformed my life. Instead of just learning to deal with my crazy anxieties, I was finally able to eliminate them. I am now a firm believer in cognitive behavioral therapy. This book provides easy exercises that work - to teach you how to change your life by changing your thoughts, one at a time.

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone and will continue to do so.

Whether this is pregnancy number 1 or number 10, nothing makes it easier to connect with a growing baby than knowing exactly what magical development is happening every day. Filling the need for practical information, medical data, emotional and spiritual fuel, and even "pregnancy trivia," The Pregnancy Journal is easily one of the best books available for a woman or couple expecting a baby. The journal contains about half a page of information for each day from conception through delivery. Nutrition, how to avoid discomforts associated with pregnancy, childbirth customs in other cultures, and practical parenting tips are among the topics touched on. Many days in the journal have a great section called "Did You Know"; for example, from Day 49: "The baby's arms at this point are only as long as this printed 1." At the bottom of each page is a quote from a literary or historical figure; some are sentimental, some pithy, some humorous, all inspiring.

The information and quotes seem to invite musings and speculation on the miracle unfolding inside the womb; there is some space for recording data and thoughts, but if you want to write more than just a few lines every few days, you might want to have a blank journal to accompany The Pregnancy Journal. The format of this book makes it much more manageable and inviting than most books on pregnancy, and the information is made even more accessible by the inclusion of a glossary/subject index in the back. Don't wait until the shower to give this excellent resource and thoughtful gift--moms-to-be will want to have it from the very beginning. --Katherine Ferguson

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2007-07-02

I bought this journal in 2000 for my first pregnancy and I bought it again in 2006 for my second. It's very user friendly and has just enough space to write down all the important things you want to remember. I love the day by day explanation of what's going on with my body and the baby. I highly recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful!.......2007-06-27

Best pregnancy journal around...the day by day details are exciting to read and very informative.

1 out of 5 stars This book hardly qualifies as a journal.......2007-06-19

I bought this book on Amazon and after actually looking through the pages decided that it really isn't much of a journal at all. This book has very few places to write anything - I ended up just buying a journal and writing in it weekly about my pregnancy. I wasn't looking for a book that tells me about my pregnancy and how it is progressing (let alone day-by-day) - I already had tons of books on that topic! Anyway - there are much better pregnancy journals out there. I just wish I could suggest one but since I decided to keep my own I can't. Sorry! On the other hand, if you are looking for a great journal for AFTER your baby is born I loved the one I bought - "Cradle the Thought - A Journal for the New Mother's First Year". Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Contains a lot of useful information!.......2007-05-29

This book gives day by day descriptions of what is happening with your developing fetus. Much of the information I had never even heard of before and I am an avid reader of many pregnancy books/magazines, etc. It is really an amazing book and makes a wonderful gift for a firt time Mom.

5 out of 5 stars I love memorilialzing my pregnancy and writing notes to baby.......2007-05-12

This journal gives great space to write to/about your baby as well as daily tidbits of useful info on the baby's growth, what the pregnant woman should be feeling/doing/eating and interesting facts about childbirth in other cultures. I look forward to reading the daily journal.

Book Description

As founder of Beckwith Advertising and Marketing, Harry Beckwith learned early on in his career that no matter what product is being sold, the most important component of the sale is you. Here Beckwith teams up with his wife, motivational speaker and former sales executive Christine Clifford Beckwith, to provide tips, anecdotes, and insights based on their 30 years of selling experience. Written in a traditional homespun style, the Beckwiths offer doses of humor and practical knowledge to anyone who wants to learn how to seal the deal and thrive in business.

5 out of 5 stars So Good, I give it as gifts to people I care about........2007-06-20

Very few books in my library were as influential as this one.

I love it when people list other books they like, so that I could quantify their review. So here goes mine: I put this book on same line with 7 Habits, Cashflow Quadrant, How to Make Friends, Think and Grow Rich. Essentially this is a basic book of effectiveness and personaly integrity/quality.

It is not a book about sales, it is a book about you. It uses sales as medium to explain communications in a business world. Its lessons, however, are as easily applied at work, if you are in a 9-5 job, with your friends, and even with your spouse. I vouch for all 3. It also made my own business more successful.

I picked this book up for two reasons: way it's written (very concise and easy to follow), and it was the cheaper of the two books I picked up from the shelf at the time. AM I GLAD I BOUGHT IT! As my title says, thisbook is now my number 1 gift to all people I care about: friends, associates, and even my customers. I've given a number of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" books as gifts, a few "7 Habits" and to every child/teen I know a combo of "7 Habits for Teens" and "6 Important Decisions for Teens" (both by Sean Covey). This is now an even more favotire gift to give.

Quams? Just one. Too many good ideas in the book to remember. Even though at the end they start reminding you about early advice by calling it differently, but it's still not enough. I'd love to have a list at the end with summary of all the points the book made. It makes sense after you read it. You just want to pin it on the wall and read it every day.

God Bless Christine and Harry for putting this wonderful book together, and many happy healthy years to both of them.

5 out of 5 stars Great for non-marketing professionals too!.......2007-06-17

As a technical professional, I found the insights in this book to be accessible and practical. I especially appreciated the sections on making a first impression and making your customer feel special. I look forward to applying these ideas to my own career.

4 out of 5 stars From the point of view of a young professional.......2007-05-20

At 25, and almost fresh out of school, it is helpful to read a book that tells me how to become a effective at being myself in the workplace. You, Inc. taught me that I am a corporation; that if I approach my work life as how I would approach a business, I can--and will--succeed.

5 out of 5 stars Create the best YOU that you can........2007-05-14

You, Inc. is an easy read and a book of good information for everyone. The book is full of nuggets of information that will inspire you to pay closer attention to the small stuff in life.

Creating a better "you" is not done by being selfish. It is accomplished by listening, relating and communicating with others. Harry and Christine have shared much from their lives and their hearts to make this book a success.

5 out of 5 stars Put yourself "out there" by going inside.......2007-05-12

If after reading a book you can walk away with just one view point or idea that inspires or enlightens, the book has succeeded. The Beckwiths do this time and again, delivering smart lessons in easily digestable sound bites. In this book, they shine a light on their own wisdom which has informed their own style. First, they aptly point out that everyone has to master the job of selling. Whenever you have to get the attention of someone, get them to understand and then get them to respond, you are selling. Sometimes you want to do that proactively and sometimes you have to do that just to be who you are, or as they say, "Some people will undervalue you. Make a plan to set them right."
When selling, you are not competing against others necessarily, but against distraction and stereotyping among other influences. Given that, the Beckwiths' very own style -- presenting captivating stories which consider by-necessity short attention spans -- demonstrates how to communicate in a way which sticks. Some of the other lessons on dressing and communicating are pretty fundamental. But all the other lessons stitched together create a message with heart: "if you are selling yourself, you are selling your spirit."
