    Book Description

Who else but Joseph Wambaugh could write "a joy, a hoot, a riot of a book" that is also acclaimed as "one of this season's best crime novels"? That's how
The New York Times Book Review and Time, respectively, described his last novel, Finnegan's Week. Nobody writes a faster, funnier, more satisfying tale of cops and criminals, the high life and lowlifes that Wambaugh--and Floaters is his sharpest yet.

Mick Fortney and his partner Leeds manage to cruise above the standard police stress-pools of coffee and Pepto-Bismol--they're water cops in the "Club Harbor Unit," manning a patrol boat on San Diego's Mission Bay. A typically rough day's detail consists of scoping out body-sculpted beauties on pleasure craft, rescuing boating bozos who've run aground, jeering at lifeguards, and hauling in the occasional floater who comes to the surface.

But now their days are anything but typical, because the America's Cup international sailing regattas have come to town and suddenly San Diego is swarming with yacht crazies of every nationality, the cuppies who want to love them, and the looky-look tourists, racing spies, scam artists, and hookers who all want their piece of the action. It's the outstanding body and jaunty smile--full of mischief, full of hell--of one cuppie, a particularly fiery redhead named Blaze, that gets Leeds and Fortney's attention. First Leeds drowns in frustratingly unrequited boozy love from afar. Then, with her increasingly odd behavior, Blaze tweaks every one of their cop instincts, alerting them that something's not quite right on the waterfront.

Indeed, Blaze will soon lead Detective Anne Zorn and Mick Fortney along a bizarre criminal trail that would be hilarious if it didn't wind up just as nasty as it gets, with a pair of murders right on the eve of the biggest sailing race of all.

Filled with all of Joseph Wambaugh's trademark skills--laugh-out-loud writing, crackling dialogue, outrageous excitement, and, of course, plenty of raunchy
veteran cops who leap off the page--Floaters is Wambaugh at the very to of his form.

      5 out of 5 stars A Small Comedic Masterpiece.......2003-12-28

This novel is a comedic delight. "Floater" is the writing job at a fictional news magazine held by the book's central character Fred Becker. (It's also a job Trillin once held in his pre-New Yorker days.) A "floater" does not have a permanent assignment, but moves from one section of the magazine to another as illness or other reason creates a temporary need. The story takes place over one week in the life of the magazine, and finds Becker wrestling with an intriguing news tip, that, if true, could lead to a significant change in his life.

Trillin's gift for illuminating the absurdities of life really shine here. The plot, while entertaining, takes a back seat to the stable of realistic characters that just about anyone who has spent time in an office will recognize--the glad-handler, the martyr, the hypochondriac, the guy you want to avoid going to lunch with, the champion of political correctness, and others.

It's a puzzle to me that this hilarious book has been allowed to go out of print. Though I've been a fan of Trillin for some time, I have to given thanks to Sara Nelson and her recent book, "So Many Books, So Little Time," for calling my attention to this forgotten gem.--William C. Hall

      5 out of 5 stars Just-about-perfect novel.......2000-10-01

This book from 1980 is startlingly fresh. If we adjust the dollar amounts for book contracts to today's values, and concede that one character might have started the SUV craze, it is absolutely contemporary.

The book's insistence on Manhattan Island as the center of the universe would be annoying to non-New Yorkers. This is unfortunate, since the characters are mostly from outside Manhattan (as is the author) and their interaction doesn't depend at all on their location.

If the reader is able to deal with the Manhattan smugness, he will be amply rewarded with a plot and a cast of characters as perfectly drawn as any by Eric Ambler, in addition to a sly sense of humor which builds imperceptibly to a perfectly hilarious conclusion.

Trillin almost could have dispensed altogether with his lovely plot, as his characters could carry most novels all by themselves.

In addition to being a just-about-perfect exposition of the writer's craft, this book is also laugh-out-loud funny, literally.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Coffee Table Book--for the Middle East.......2005-03-06

I live in the Middle East, and have found this book very entertaining and useful. Entertaining, because whenever my Arab neighbors come over, they really get a kick out of the clever proverbs and witty sayings. It's always a great book for a conversation starter or sustainer.

It's also useful because it gives great Arabic language and cultural instruction. You can really get to know the heart and soul of a people through their proverbs, and this book helps you understand the Arab people better by teaching you some of their numerous sayings of wisdom.

4 out of 5 stars A small collection of Egyptian wisdom.......2001-07-30

This is a fun book with a relatively innovative idea. It includes a sample of Egyptian proverbs accompanied with illustrations and written in Arabic with English translation. Most proverbs are quite funny, but they also reflect much wisdom in their meaning. This is a very pleasant book which can be a helpful aid in learning the language.

              5 out of 5 stars Highly Amusing.......2000-07-28

A brilliant little book that not only made me laugh but taught me some Arabic language and a little more about the way people think - an excellent gift!

1 out of 5 stars illustrations are not meaningfull.......2000-01-03

This Book is NO good, as the illustrations on the listed proverbs are not actually related to the proverb meaning. I was expecting to see the drawings actually expressing the Proverb meanning, which is not the case. I do not recommend this book for anyone

4 out of 5 stars A very humorous and educational Arabic language resource.......1999-05-02

The proverbs in the book range from common, to downright hilarious. They are printed in Arabic with english translations. A fantastic resource for students of Arabic at all levels.

4 out of 5 stars Another stellar Skyrider adventure!.......2000-06-27

Melacha Rendell, the legendary Skyrider, gruff, unfeeling, unsentimental, ace pilot getting cuddly with a teddy bear? That would ruin her image! But, as we all know, there's more to the Skyrider than meets the eye. This novel takes up where Michael's last novel "Pirate Prince" leaves off. Melacha is enjoying a romantic interlude on her private asteroid hideaway with her lover, one of the best con men around, when some one leaves a "floater" infant squalling in Melacha's airlock. The Skyrider, who is not the motherly type to say the least, immediately attempts to wash her hands of all responsibility for this child but, almost as soon as the baby is removed from the airlock, someone tries to blow up Melacha's asteroid hideaway. After a pitched battle ensues, in which Melacha displays her legendary shoot-em-up skills, the assassins are dispatched, and Melacha is off on a galaxy quest to find out why someone would want this baby dead. Along for the novel is Melacha's wingman, Jamin, and Jamin's son, Colin, who are seeking to escape the fanatical and deadly prejudice that "Grounders" (people who can't tolerate free fall) have against "Fallers" (who can't tolerate gravity) and "Floaters" (people who are comfortable in either environment). If you enjoy rousing space adventure and strong women protagonists, you'll enjoy this and Michaels' other Skyrider novels. And, if you enjoy Elizabeth Moon's work, you'll doubtless find a kindred spirit here.
