Customer Reviews:
Not Particularly Useful.......2007-06-08
The gist of this book is: "Have a good time, no matter what. Avoid bugging the staff, your problem's not that big." Very little in the way of stuff which could enhance your cruise or keep you out of trouble.
The Essential little Cruise Book.......2007-03-02
I am returning this item.
Its a small little book with just general information nothing specific or insightfull.
The Essential Little Cruise Book, 3rd........2006-08-22
Having never taken a cruise, I found this book very imformative, answered many questions I had. Would recomend this book to any first time cruiser.
over-hyped, under-delivered.......2006-07-09
A waste of money and a big disappointment. There were no "insider" tips offered. A very general overview of cruising. There is far more good information available from internet cruising blogs. Anyone want to buy a slightly used book?
Neat little book, especially for first-timers -- But not incredibly informative!.......2006-06-07
I've never been on a cruise but am going on my first next month! I decided to get this book because of the decent reviews and reasonable price. I must say, it definitely has several tips that I think will be useful: the best cabin is in the center of the ship both horizontally and vertically, bring Dramamine just in case, and don't think because you feel the cool breeze from the ship moving that you're not getting sunburned! It also has some interesting tips on cruise etiquette (like never decline an invitation to sit at the Captain's Table at dinner)...Some of the items are pretty obvious (don't go into a door that says "Crew Only") and seem to be there to just to lengthen the book.
Overall, it's a fun read, and even if you've been on a cruise before I guarantee you will learn something new from this book. One thing to note is that the book is really just a big bulleted list of hints and suggestions from a former Cruise Director. No real details or war stories from the "inside." The tips are helpful but I wouldn't call them "essential." It would definitely make a thoughtful Bon Voyage gift for someone going on a cruise, though!

Book Description
Meant for “bigger things,” Scuffy the Tugboat sets off to explore the world. But on his daring adventure Scuffy realizes that home is where he’d rather be, sailing in his bathtub. For over 50 years, parents and children have cherished this classic Little Golden Book.
Customer Reviews:
reliving my childhood.......2007-05-15
While some of my childhood favorites have proved timeless, Scuffy the tugboat is not one of them. Oh well, you can't have everything.
These books grow on one..........2007-05-07
We seem to like these books more and more. There is a lot to talk about around these stories. The pictures are lovely too and they open up a lot of interesting subjects. My three year old often asks specifically for this one to be read to her.
scuffy the tug boat.......2006-12-15
Scuffy the tugbaot is one of the few books that have the meaning of there's no place like home. Scuffy the tugboat is about a little boat who thinks he has bigger priorities than hes given. Scuffy doesn't want to just sail in a tub or the sink, Scuffy wants to go on the a big adventure. As Scuffy went on his adventure he realized that he didn't a big river all he wanted in his life was a young boy, a guy with a poke a dot tie, and his favorite bath tub.
Wonderful for children.......2006-09-03
My son loves this story. It's a very heartwarming, original story that little boys and girls will enjoy. We love Little Golden Books.
Scuffy the Tugboat.......2006-06-13
In some cases, updating the illustrations is a good idea. With Scuffy, an update like that would definitely NOT be for the best! The illustrations, detailed and adorable, are perfect and always have been.
Scuffy isn't happy in the toy store, and not much happier when he's taken home and put in a tub by the man with a polka dot tie. When he gets placed in a brook high in the hills, he's sure he's found the life for him. He floats along and the next morning Scuffy finds himself in a river, very proud of himself and "his" river. Small scares, like night and a flood, are nothing compared to the sight of the sea, with no beginning and no end! Scuffy wishes he could find the man with the polka dot tie and his little boy again...
With few long words, Scuffy's a great place for young readers to work on their skills. The story is actually fairly exciting and fast-paced, for a book of only 23 pages, which will keep them turning the pages.

A girl and her father cross the English Channel to help rescue hundreds of thousands of Allies stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk. A child's vision of war's pangs and fears is crucial in The Little Ships, and Louise Borden never falters. Nor do the watercolors by Michael Foreman (and readers of all ages should get hold of his superbly unsentimental memoir, War Boy).
Book Description
In May of 1940 -- the early days of World War II -- half a million British and French soldiers were trapped in France. Weak and wounded, they needed aid. Help came in the form of countless small craft, steered by brave young men, in the legendary armada of "little ships" that sailed aross the English Channel. Many people wanted to be a part of the rescue mission. Here is the story of a girl who was so determined to help that she disguised herself as a boy to blend in with the men as they sailed toward Dunkirk.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Pictures.......2007-03-09
Although this is a picture book, it's pretty difficult reading for early elementary. I bought this for my first and second graders, but after reading it decided to save it until they're older. Until they're ready for it, I will enjoy it myself! To me it is a very real and moving account of the famous rescue of the soldiers at Dunkirk. I think it would be a good supplement to a class studying World War 2, any age from 3rd grade on up, but probably more benefit for slightly older kids. Younger kids would definitely need some preparation for the vocabulary before reading the book.
Reality and Poetry.......2002-04-05
I first learned of the Battle of Dunkirk when I read 'The Snow Goose' at the age of 11. I am sick of Harry Potter and its ilk and want my grandson to learn about stories that last. I realized he neither knows nor cares about history, nor is he so a precocious reader as I was at his age (pre-television). I decided this would have to be a gradual process, and that he will have to know about one of the great heroic events in our history before 'The Snow Goose' would be meaningful to him.
To this end, I discovered 'The Little Ships' and found myself with tears in my eyes over the beauty of the writing. For example, when the little girl is relating what she sees in the water (broken planks, army coats and boots) as she and her father are ferrying the soldiers, she sums it up by ' . . . and everything soldiers leave behind when they can take only themselves.'
The 'Snow Goose' will have to wait - although I certainly enjoyed reading it again. He's simply not old enough, but he's ready for 'The Little Ships.' The beauty of the writing and the wonderful illustrations will capture him. Best of all, the basic story is true. I'm buying two more copies - one for my library and one for the grade school. Children should know that, while we humans are capable of hideous acts, we are also capable of breathtaking acts of bravery, and they should be moved as they read about them.

Book Description
The EPA says that outboard motors emit nearly 70 times as much pollution as the family car. Here is the first practical handbook for boaters seeking a cleaner, quieter, more relaxed alternative. Readers will find everything they need to know about electricity, batteries, motors, and chargers whether they're converting an existing boat, buying a commercially available electric boat or building their own boat from scratch.
Customer Reviews:
the best book on electric boats.......2002-08-23
This is a great introduction to the technical and aesthetic aspects of choosing / outfitting / building a quiet, clean boat. I've used the information to put together two electric boats, and have been delighted with the head start on information in one place on battery capacity, battery care, motors, power consumption, propeller and hull performance, etc... As an experienced electrical engineer, I have found some technical weakesses and typos, but overall, this is a great pioneering book that I hope has some worthy successors.

Doug shows us how we can get involved with electric boating for about $500 and 60 hours investment! This is the third book about electric boating I have read, and I expect it will be the last. Doug covers it all and leaves the reader with enough flexability to suit their needs.
Still the best book of its kind available........1999-06-30
After several years since its publication, Douglas Little's Handbook is still the best book of its kind. It is a great guide for anyone who wants to learn about electric boating and how to build one for very little money. Electric boats hve been around for 150 years. They are reliable, good for the environment, fun and cheap. They don't spook the animals and birds as they pass. Douglas Little tells us how to get more out of boating with less energy and no pollution. Ken Matthews Executive Director Electric Boat Association of the Americas
Hardly a disaster.......1999-06-19
This book was not difficult to understand, provided nice plans for building your own electric boat, and is great when trying to find a means of enjoying the outdoors without destroying the outdoors. The author builds electric boats for a living and knows what he is talking about.

Mr. Small is a sailor in this maritime adventure! Captain Small and his dog Tinker sail and fish together. When a storm comes, Captain Small heads for the safety of the shore. A comforting, nostalgic story full of information about sailing.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Sailing Story!.......2007-03-08
Our two year old boy-girl twins really like this story. We are a family that sails and this little book has basic information about being on the water and sailing, it talks about tacking and jibing. But, for non-sailing families this is a sweet book about a little boy that goes for a sail with his dog, catches a fish, sees a storm coming and knows to go home, and takes care of his boat.
As with other Lois Lenski books, the pictures are clear and crisp with enough detail to be interesting but not overwhelming.
This story is a timeless treasure.
Our favorite nightime story book.......2003-12-08
We really like to use this book to read to our son (2 year old) because it contains a little story, it's short enough that he can follow it, there is plenty of pictures to keep him interested with as many occasion to teach him some new vocabulary.
We would also recommend very much Mr Small little Farm.

Book Description
First published in 1939, this classic story of the energetic tugboat is brought to new life in this restored edition. With the help and support of Hardie Gramatky's estate, to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, we have used archived first editions and Hardie's original paintings to restore Little Toot to its full glory, bringing back a richness of color that has been lost in decades of reprintings. This new edition also features several of the artist's full-color manuscript sketches, never before seen in print, and reintroduces the book's exquisite original endpapers.
Customer Reviews:
What have they done?.......2006-12-01
My question is: Why did such the delightful story of Little Toot need to be abridged?
With the abridging you lose the rich descriptive langauge and many of the wonderful illustrations that go along with the story. Is this what we want for our childern?
Once frightening, the recording, that is...........2006-05-31
Before I learned to read, my Sunday school teacher would play the 78 rpm record derived from the Disney cartoon. As soon as she said we would hear it I would start to cry. Why?
There were sound effects that scared the living daylights out of me.
Be all that as it may, the book eventually became one of my favorites in my early years. One may say I learned not only to read with the help of this classic, but to appreciate the splendor of sound design in movies and other media.
Additionally, By age 8 I could pronounce, with clarity, the name "Gramatky."
1939 Classic Still Charms Children.......2005-09-20
"Little Toot" by Hardie Gramatky hit the bookshelves in 1939. It has never left. With art which remind readers of Virginia Burton's "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel," and a story with a message not unlike "The Little Engine That Could" Watty Piper, it is a classic.
The Plot:
Little Toot is a tugboat who, though he could create a sound, could create smoke. Like in "The Story of Ferdinand" by Munro Leaf, Little Toot liked to spend his days peacefully. He would play instead of work, spinning Figure 8s. Other tugboats teased him, and soon, Little Toot had no friends.
One day, Little Toot wanders into the ocean, a deep and scary place, and so he sent an SOS smoke signal. The tugs all came to his rescue, but the waves held them back.
"Little Toot" is an adventure story for younger children. The smallest boat becomes a hero, like the young angel in "The Littlest Angel" by Charles Tazewell.
I fully recommend "Little Toot" by Hardie Gramatky.

A Precious Memory.......2005-04-23
I had not seen this book for at least 3 decades. When I did see it, I knew I had to have a copy for myself. It was the first book I ever read and it brought back precious memories.
The story is about a frivolous young tugboat that would rather play than work. This damages his own and his family's reputation. By the time he is ready to turn over a new leaf, none will take him seriously. He does get his big chance, however, and redeems himself while saving the day when nobody else can.
This is the book that kindled my love of reading and stoked the fires of my fascination with ships. In that respect, it is still an influence in my life today.
For young readers, it is a good story in terms of entertainment and life lesson. The artwork helps as well. Great for kids!
Cute and whimsical.......2002-05-11
Author of THE REBEL'S PLEDGE, a historical romance novel of Colonial Maryland.
My boys loved Little Toot and his adventures on the water. It is a cute story of a little boat, his dad, and grandpa. A fun story to read together, and a good first reader for preschoolers.

SOS--A whale is trapped in a fishing net! This looks like a job for... the little orange submarine. From the creator of other exciting, interactive minibooks on things that go (Little Green Tow Truck, Big Silver Space Shuttle, Big Blue Engine, etc.) comes a story that takes readers under the deep blue sea. When Ocean Lab radios the little orange submarine for help with a whale, the sub promptly responds. Young readers slide a tab to make the sub dive under the surface. Turning one wheel reveals something... fishy... on the sonar screen, and shifting another tab uncovers another deep-sea critter lurking in the seaweed--an octopus! But still no whale, until readers help the little submarine switch on the main beam to light up the seabed--and thar she blows. Now it's just a matter of using the mechanical arms to snip away the net, and the whale and the little orange submarine are free to go their separate ways.
Ken Wilson-Max knows what grabs the interest of so many little readers--planes, trains, automobiles, and boats. Kids will love going along for a ride on the feisty sub, especially when they can manipulate the controls themselves. As with Wilson-Max's other interactive books, the main complaint might be that the flaps and tabs aren't quite sturdy enough for the eager fingers of his young fans. Still, if the mark of a well-loved book is its dog-eared quality, there's no doubt about these titles. (Baby to Preschool) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Dive on board the Little Orange Submarine for the adventure of your life! Sturdy cardstock manipulative parts allow children to take the submarine under water, turn the dial to view the sonar screen, adjust the lights to see the seabed, and mechanically cut the net to rescue a trapped whale.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2005-01-22
I agree with the previous reviewer. My (15 month old) son is very mechanical and loves all the action in this book, but the parts do break quickly. We finally had to put it on a high-up "only read with Mommy & Daddy" shelf. But where's the fun in that?
Great for our 2-year-old tech-kid.......2001-06-05
I just love how Ken Wilson-Max focuses on books about technical stuff and machines for little kids. I this book our son could flip things and levers and really use his imagination. I highly recommend this little book for anyone with a child interested in machines, cars etc. The only bad thing (as with all books of this kind) is that paper things break fast in little hands.

Julie Andrews Edwards is probably best known for her stunning role in The Sound of Music, but the truth is, she's been thrilling readers since 1971 with her splendid children's books Mandy and The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles. Edwards wrote her first children's book for her daughter when she lost a bet--for which the book was the payoff. Now, nearly 30 years later, we're delighted that Edwards has put pen to paper again with Little Bo: The Story of Bonnie Boadicea.
This gentle story begins when Sarabande, Mrs. Edge's champion Persian cat, has a litter of kittens. Not, mind you, prize-winning kittens, but kittens born to the proud, handsome alley cat Bounder. Unwelcome, unwanted, the kittens narrowly escape a watery end--and that's where Little Bo's adventures begin. The tiniest, most beautiful kitten of the litter is named by her father for Boadicea, a fearless warrior queen. But Bo isn't feeling too brave or regal when she, separated from her brothers and sisters on a cold winter's night, wails "a long, miserable cry that came from her heart." Happily, her cry is answered by a friendly, warm-hearted young sailor named Billy Bates who falls in love with her wide, violet eyes.
Bo knows better than to leave his side, so she stows away in the captain's cabin and sets sail with him on the Red Betsy where she begins her life as a ship's cat. Her adventures--stormy and dangerous as they are--make for a sweet, suspenseful tale of friendship and loyalty. Illustrator Henry Cole (of Jack's Garden and Livingstone Mouse) infuses life and emotion into Edwards's already thoroughly charming story. Customer Reviews:
Julie Andrews is truely magical.......2002-03-07
As a child I fell in love with the actress Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. Still an outstanding actress, I enjoyed her recent Princess Diaries, I am continually amazed at her abilities. If singing like a nightingale and acting weren't enough, she has also proven to be equally talented as an author! My eleven year daughter bought Little Bo two years ago with her hard earned allowance money. She couldn't put it down then and frequently goes back to enjoy it over again. She is currently reading it to her five year old sister who can't wait for bedtime now since she so enjoys her bedime story. The only problem is that their eight year old brother runs off with it at the most inopportune times thus wreaking havok! He thought if he could sneak away and read it in hiding no one would tease him. Boys who are almost nine are only supposed to read cool stuff, you know. He, too, found Little Bo irresistable and no longer even tries to hide it. I'm beginning to wonder if Mary Poppins wasn't really a fictional character at all but a chapter in Julie Andrews life. Don't stop now Ms. Andrews. We love you!
A Must-Read Children's Book.......2002-01-02
Bonnie Boadicea "Bo" is a little kitten born into a family with a loving mother and father, but not to kind owners. She is the runt of the litter, and doesn't eat much due to her small size. Her father loves her, and to make her feel special gives her a big name, but calls her "Bo" for short.
One day it is time for the kittens to leave their mother, and the nice warm house. They realize that they are going to be hurt unless they escape from Mr. Withers, who was supposed to take them to the pet shop. So all the kittens run in different directions, and are soon scared, wet and hungry.
Bo meets a nice sailor and gets into all kinds of mischief with him on the boat he works on, and is soon a sailing cat with a nice home and a kind owner.
This is a must read children's book that anyone, young or old, would enjoy.
Julie Andrews Edwards reading _Little Bo_ is a must........2001-09-07
The CD/book edition of _Little Bo_ is a must for young children. Julie Andrews Edwards reads as well as she sings. This edition adds much to the written text. The CD can be used as a series of short readings. The conclusion of each chapter is accompanied by gentle music that tells the child or parent that there is a natural break. The author researched the book well, and the portions of the book that take place on a fishing boat during a severe storm are very plausible. Henry Cole's soft drawings do much to convey the flavor of the story.
Bo, the kitten, and her siblings were sent away during a snow storm by the owner because their sire was an alley cat. Bo finds a friend in Billy Bates, a sailor aboard a fishing boat. Bo survives a severe storm and the dislike of the boat captain. Billy and Bo leave the boat to find new lives for themselves.
Great "read aloud" book.......2000-10-30
I read this book aloud to my 6 year old daughter and she loved it. My 12 year old niece happened to be here at the same time and would also chide me into reading "one more chapter". I have a hard time finding stories to read aloud to my daughter that are at a lever that she can enjoy. This was excellent and I'm sure will be read again and again in our family.
A touching little tale.......2000-05-07
The author of THE LAST OF THE REALLY GREAT WHANGDOODLES and MANDY, and star of many Brodway musicals and movies such as MARY POPPINS and THE SOUND OF MUSIC enchants us again with a third novel for children, LITTLE BO.
At the start of this entertaining novel for the young, a champion Pursan cat gives birth to seven darling kittens who are taken away upon their human master's will. They are eventulally sepperated, and it takes great courage for Bo to find a life for herself. An enchanting tale of the courage of young! Very enjoyable. Reccomended as a read aloud to young children.
