5 out of 5 stars ~*~ AMAZING ~*~.......2007-05-17

I absolutely agree with the other reviews listed. This is an amazing book! I went into this book with my own personal reservations and opinions on the subject matter. John has clearly opened my eyes to many different avenues of thought I had never imagined possible. His words are powerful and so easy to understand - you can tell this was written from his heart. I find the history and the methods discussed to be entrancing and this book was a quick read for me - I could not put it down. I must admit, it was a personal journey for me, as some of the things discussed were disturbing to me - I am so grateful to have worked through my own fear to receive this wonderful teaching.
I had the honor of meeting John at a recent seminar. He is a skilled and gifted shaman and lightworker. His knowledge is top notch in his field and he holds the energy of ancient wisdom. I highly recommend him as an author and healer.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating and important work.......2006-04-06

Not much to say that hasn't been said in the review above by Dr. Ciprian. John G. Livingston is on the cutting edge of his kind of shamanic work, extremely intelligent and a real teacher's teacher. I am grateful for his research, techniques, and his very presence. People who carry much light can be very suseptible to problems of a darker nature, _especialliy_ in our current times of great change and upheaval....thus someone of John's expertise can really come in handy.

5 out of 5 stars An Eye Opener.......2006-01-05

I came upon this book because of a patient of mine. I am a spiritual person and have an open mind but I also need to see physical results to believe in something. A young woman that I was treating for several chronic problems went to a shamanic healer by the advice of a friend. When she returned to my office she looked like a different person. The shamanic healer used the techniques that are written about in John Livingston's book. I am interested in these types of things because of experiences I have had and I quickly found a copy of Adversaries Walk Among Us. It was a very interesting and exciting read.

John Livingston gives experiences of his shamanic journeys and case studies of working with his clients as well as the history of spiritual de-possession or exorcism. He also gives histories of the various spirit entities and what they can do if they are infecting a human host and how to remove them (although there are warnings that you should be experienced in shamanic healing before trying this). John also mentions other books to assist in becoming more knowledgeable about this subject.

John's book opened my eyes to reasons of why some people have major obstacles in their lives whether it is health, relationship abundance, etc. He also inspired me to read more books on shamanic healing and I am thankful for that.

5 out of 5 stars Apurimac River - the real explorers!.......2000-12-15

This is a true "sleeper" book. Well written, fascinating and real. A pure joy to read for any whitwater enthusiast and anyone who loves adventure. It is too bad that it is out of print. I think that with proper marketing this could be a great bestseller! Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Harrowing trip led by mild-mannered chemistry professor.......2000-06-22

This just the type of book I like to read at night before going to sleep. The exploits are of a kind I would never attempt, and just the contemplation of them makes me at once weary and exhilarated.

In the early seventies the author resolved to kayak down one of the most forbidding rivers in the world: the Apurimac in Peru. In two trips, in 1974 and 1975, he did just that. The Apurimac is the longest tributary and hence considered the source of, the Amazon (River). It is forbidding due to the extreme ferocity of its cataracts, and also due to the fact that in many places along its course climbing out of its canyon or going back upstream would be impossible. Thus, the discovery by Giddings and his companions of a scenic forty or fifty foot waterfall on the unexplored sections could well have been a death sentence.

While all the kayakers did make it out alive, things were not always hunky-dory between them. Giddings comments frequently on his team's lack of teamwork and his submerged tensions. Reading this a quarter century later, I felt he could be right or maybe wrong, but I had almost nothing by which to draw any conclusions. The author gives only the most cursory description of the other members of his party (5 besides himself), then launches into the chronicle. This information deficit is never cured. We are not told the age, the religion, the education, the job, the background, the biases--nothing of any of these five other men on the journey, which makes it impossible to become involved as a reader in the psycho-drama that seems to have played out on the river. One cannot even attempt some judgement based solely on appearance because although the book has many photos, it lacks a portrait of the group, which one would think basic in a work of this kind. The reader can only glimpse three of the five members in individual pictures.

So the question remains. Were they really a band of males of the stand-up comedy stereotype: egotistical, enamored of tools and technological playthings, but unable to talk about their feelings round the campfire or work together as a unit on the river? Were they even aware of any potential for their expedition to turn into a disaster of the kind portrayed in the movie Deliverance (a hit of that era)or the more recent catastrophes on Everest? Or is there another side to the story that Giddings chose for one reason or another not to reveal?

5 out of 5 stars Tons of info, tons of facts........2002-08-06

This book is full of facts to allow you to make your own decisions. Although some of the facts are harsh, it's an honest analysis of religion. He doesnt just cover christianity either, hinduism, buddism, etc are in there as well. He covers the bible, religious leaders, rituals. It's well written covering a good amount of topics. I learned a lot and enjoyed the book a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Bible Stories ARE Borrowed.......2001-12-06

Gillooly succinctly puts all the sources of derivation of Bible stories under one roof. Isn't it interesting that the ritual of Attis involved bread and wine used in a way similar to the Last Supper? that eqyptian, babylonian, and zoroastrians shared so many symbols with Christianity and Judaism?

Any of us who have looked in to the culture at the time of the Bible stories vaguely know some of these stories and their connections to the Bible. Here Gillooly keeps them tightly packed with their Jewish and Christian counter-parts.

This book will be offensive to those who are afraid to look at the facts of Bible authorship square in the face. But for those of you who are intrigued by the derivation of Bible stories and rituals, this is a gripping read.

Particularly fascinating are Gillooly's more medieval investigations involving demons, magic, and how these are intertwined with a Biblical sense of what illness is. How the Christian Church has evolved in its relationship to these doctrines in the light of science is one of the most telling aspects of what the church does.

The style and organization of the book make it difficult to put down. Gillooly finds the humor, but is likewise fair in his assessment of the meaning of the findings of archeology, and the study of ancient texts.

1 out of 5 stars Good Idea, Bad Execution.......1998-10-02

Gillooly sets himself a big task: explaining where our beliefs about gods and other supernatural beings come from. It would be great to have a book that does this competently for the layman, using up-to-date scholarship. Unfortunately, Gillooly's scholarship on this subject seems limited to what a high school student could acquire in a few afternoons at a (small) public library from (old) encyclopedias and magazines. Gillooly seems to think Freud is the last word in scholarship in this area, apparently blissfully unaware of the beating Freud has taken in all areas in the last decade. It's sad to see Ashley Montagu endorsing this embarrassment of a book. I can only conclude he did not read it, or if he did, his normally keen critical faculties have failed him. We have a right to expect better from Prometheus; instead, this book will add fuel to those anxious to point out that critics of religion are often just as narrow and uninformed as the believers they criticize.

      Product Description

The first book of its kind on this subject for people who are interested in religious mysteries. The book using Quranic statements and our current scientific knowledge explains the origin of angels, demons, Satan, and Jinns. It predicts their physical and biological characteristics and discusses their intellectual and spiritual ability. It compares their capabilities with that of the humans and explores how and to what extent they can influence humans. The book also addresses the following questions: -Are angels, demons, Satan, and Jinns material beings or energy beings? -When were they created and what is their life-span? -What do they eat and where do they live? -How many of them are there and why can we not see them? -How fast they travel and how far can they go up in the heaven? -What are their responsibilities and capabilities? -Can they acquire human and other forms? -What will be their fate or status in the Hereafter? -How many types of angels are there and what is their function? -What kind of benefits can we derive from the Jinns? -How far the myths (e.g. haunted houses, being possessed, or they float and do not have shadow) about the Jinns are true? -How does the story Genie in the Bottle compare with the scientific explanation?

      Book Description

True to life adventure about North America's meanest animal, Alaska's wolverine, alias devil bear, demon bear, and devil beast.

Demons of Stony River is more than a good fictional story about one of nature's most fascinating animals. It is a highly informative study of fauna and flora, wilderness, and nature as it really is in the Kuskokwim territory of Alaska. The author's expertise and knowledge is based on first hand observation and experience with the exactitude of a biologist. Tom tells it the way it is in nature with her endless cycles and survivals of the fittest. The beauty of wilderness is described with touches of poetic splendor. The stark realism of the bloody fight for survival with nature in the raw, is told with no punches pulled, yet without cheap sensationalism. This book tells it like it is in a clean, clear, easy to read style for young and old alike. Anyone with an interest in the reality of nature will find this book worth the reading. It's honest, and that's a lot these days.

      1 out of 5 stars unreadable.......2003-01-26

There are not a lot of books on wolverines out there, so I was disappointed that this one quickly proved unreadable - for two reasons. First, it seemed unduly graphic, extemely violent and scatalogical. I realize this is a nature book, but... Second, it was extremely difficult to wade through; I would say poorly written. Too many long and clumsy sentences. Thoroughly unappealing. I would not spend the money again.
