Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince --Harry Potter #6-- Hardcover

Amazon.com

The long-awaited, eagerly anticipated, arguably over-hyped Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has arrived, and the question on the minds of kids, adults, fans, and skeptics alike is, "Is it worth the hype?" The answer, luckily, is simple: yep. A magnificent spectacle more than worth the price of admission, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will blow you away. However, given that so much has gone into protecting the secrets of the book (including armored trucks and injunctions), don't expect any spoilers in this review. It's much more fun not knowing what's coming--and in the case of Rowling's delicious sixth book, you don't want to know. Just sit tight, despite the earth-shattering revelations that will have your head in your hands as you hope the words will rearrange themselves into a different story. But take one warning to heart: do not open Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince until you have first found a secluded spot, safe from curious eyes, where you can tuck in for a good long read. Because once you start, you won't stop until you reach the very last page.

A darker book than any in the series thus far with a level of sophistication belying its genre, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince moves the series into murkier waters and marks the arrival of Rowling onto the adult literary scene. While she has long been praised for her cleverness and wit, the strength of Book 6 lies in her subtle development of key characters, as well as her carefully nuanced depiction of a community at war. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, no one and nothing is safe, including preconceived notions of good and evil and of right and wrong. With each book in her increasingly remarkable series, fans have nervously watched J.K. Rowling raise the stakes; gone are the simple delights of butterbeer and enchanted candy, and days when the worst ailment could be cured by a bite of chocolate. A series that began as a colorful lark full of magic and discovery has become a dark and deadly war zone. But this should not come as a shock to loyal readers. Rowling readied fans with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by killing off popular characters and engaging the young students in battle. Still, there is an unexpected bleakness from the start of Book 6 that casts a mean shadow over Quidditch games, silly flirtations, and mountains of homework. Ready or not, the tremendous ending of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will leave stunned fans wondering what great and terrible events await in Book 7 if this sinister darkness is meant to light the way. --Daphne Durham

Why We Love Harry
Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Magic, Mystery, and Mayhem: A Conversation with J.K. Rowling

A Few Words from Mary GrandPré

"When I illustrate a cover or a book, I draw upon what the author tells me; that's how I see my responsibility as an illustrator. J.K. Rowling is very descriptive in her writing--she gives an illustrator a lot to work with. Each story is packed full of rich visual descriptions of the atmosphere, the mood, the setting, and all the different creatures and people. She makes it easy for me. The images just develop as I sketch and retrace until it feels right and matches her vision." Check out more Harry Potter art from illustrator Mary GrandPré.

5 out of 5 stars A deluxe edition of a cliffhanger of a book!.......2007-06-29

Simply put, the Deluxe Edition of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is worth every penny for the avid collector. If you want to enjoy a good read, I'd recommend the ten dollar paperback. But if you want a piece of the Harry Potter Universe that is a cut above, the Deluxe Edition is the ONLY way to go. I have two of them; one to read, admire and such and the other to keep sealed as a gift for my kids for one day. (This goes for the Order of the Phoenix Deluxe Edition as well.) I highly recommend it.

And of course, while the story remains exactly the same, fantastic new illustrations as well as tried and true ones in any copy by Mary Grandpre' await in this fresh version.

5 out of 5 stars Love Harry Potter.......2007-06-26

Okay, I'll be honest and upfront and say that I haven't exactly finished this book. I'm actually writing this review simply to knock the last review off the page. For anyone with half a brain, you will understand why I wish to do this. I cannot stand people who bash something for the sake of bashing something. I don't mind reasoned and well argued criticism, I just hate the people who hurl insults that aren't based in anything beyond their own ignorance. There may be valid criticisms against the book, but I certainly haven't read any negative responses here that contain any amount of intelligence. That goes double for the particular review I am wanting to move off the page. I love the Harry Potter books. They are exciting, fun, well written and with a much needed sense of wimsy. The books prove to be imaginative works of fantasy with a well crafted world that is gauranteed to suck you in if you give it half a chance. Every now and then it is wonderful to have something that doesn't take itself to seriously and instead gives an enjoyable place where you can get lost and experience something full of wonder and awe. So it isn't bloody Shakespeare, it does what it sets out to do amazingly, deliver a read that is truly and wholy entertaining and pleasurable. Besides who ever thought anyone could get children to read 800+ paged novels?

5 out of 5 stars Half Blood Prince is a Whole Lot of Dazzling.......2007-06-26

For those who frequent my reviews (which would be, hmmmm, none of you), you might notice a common theme in my reasons for not reading certain books. My reasoning is that I anticipate the book will be so good that it will take too much time away from my busy schedule and force me to neglect other things such as, for instance, family, employment, eating, sleeping, and breathing, among other necessary things. Harry Potter books have long since been on this "anticipated good book" blacklist. That is why I had not read Half Blood Prince until last week (June '07). It was easy enough to let Order of the Phoenix overtake my life back then because I had no social life worth mentioning and I was in college, which everyone knows was made for procrastinators. But between books five and six I got married, got a job, and had a beautiful daughter, which all demanded enough attention from me so as to keep me from taking a week off for Harry Potter, good though it may well have been. But then I became a Scoutmaster for a troop of Boy Scouts, and along came Boy Scout camp. Ahhhh, a week where I do nothing while scouts go and earn merit badges. I enthusiastically nabbed a copy of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Were my pre-reading fears of the book being too good to read during a routine week legitimate? Absolutely. I am not a fast reader by any means, but I had Half Blood Prince read and finished in time to finish another book and start yet one more before heading home at the end of the week. How do I add onto what has already been said about Rowling's works? Well, I can't, so I'll just tell my experience. She is amazing (I would say "magical" but that's just too cliche, even though it fits). Each book gets more mature and complicated as it goes, which directly mirrors Harry's own growth into adulthood. Each book works magnificently at its own level, and end to end, in spite of the progress of the storytelling, they still maintain the same style and framework. As the stakes raise, Rowling keeps on demonstrating that nothing is out of reach, nothing is impossible, and everything ... everything is thought through. Even the inevitable, supposedly predictable plot points, when they do come true, is not a moment of, "Yeah, I thought so;" instead it slips seamlessly into the story to the point where you don't even notice it has happened. In the overall scheme of things, was Half Blood Prince my favorite? Well, that's kind of a dumb question. It is all one story, and in that way, I'm enchanted with the whole story. If we're talking about years where Harry has grown, I think I liked his third year at Hogwarts the best, but that shouldn't disparage the story of Harry on the whole. Half Blood Prince is simply another fantastic volume in a historic storytelling moment. The upside to waiting so long for Half Blood Prince is that I only have to wait a month for the final installment. Of course, I'll need another free reading week again. Perhaps the scouts will want to go to two scout camps this summer?

5 out of 5 stars Harry's most dangerous year yet........2007-06-25

In "The Order of the Phoenix", the battle against Lord Voldemort burst into the open in spectacular fashion, but now Harry must try to return to what passes as normal in his life and try to focus on his school work. This year, Professor Dumbledore is working one-on-one with Harry, digging into Voldemort's past, looking for clues that will help them defeat the Dark Lord. Meanwhile, Harry is convinced that Malfoy is up to no good at Hogwart's and is determined to prevent him from succeeding in whatever nastiness he's up to. The story builds to a dramatic and unexpected climax (sorry, no spoiler here!), and we're left wondering about the future of Hogwart's and whether Harry will prevail in his mission to stop Voldemort at all costs.

I bought this book for my older daughter, who is overweight. Much of the symptoms of her condition were detailed in the book. But the book is too long. Anybody trying to reduce and control weight wants fast results.
A book so big is not practical. Author should review and condense it, probably to less than half.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-04

This book taught me a lot of things about my body. I was never aware of my blood sugar levels, but now I recognize feelings I've always had - shaky, irritable - as low blood sugar. I've totally changed my diet b/c of this book, and I'm losing weight without being hungry. I'm sending my copy to a friend, and I've been telling a lot of people about it.

I really only read the first half or so. It gets a little repetitive, which is fine. That's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. You'll hit a section that appeals to your way of thinking. The message is the same throughout. It's not breathtaking, but it's full of staistics and information that will change the way you think. e.g. most Americans only get half the recommended amount of fiber in their diets.

I feel like reducing high glycemic index foods has ton a lot for me. I had a chronic cold/sinus infection for over 6 months that is gone. I feel more clear-headed. I'm able to resist my cravings for sweets, which is a big deal to me.

Get this book! It will turn your attitude around, and change your body and your life.

"Until one morning in mid-November of 1959, few Americans--in fact, few Kansans--had ever heard of Holcomb. Like the waters of the river, like the motorists on the highway, and like the yellow trains streaking down the Santa Fe tracks, drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there." If all Truman Capote did was invent a new genre--journalism written with the language and structure of literature--this "nonfiction novel" about the brutal slaying of the Clutter family by two would-be robbers would be remembered as a trail-blazing experiment that has influenced countless writers. But Capote achieved more than that. He wrote a true masterpiece of creative nonfiction. The images of this tale continue to resonate in our minds: 16-year-old Nancy Clutter teaching a friend how to bake a cherry pie, Dick Hickock's black '49 Chevrolet sedan, Perry Smith's Gibson guitar and his dreams of gold in a tropical paradise--the blood on the walls and the final "thud-snap" of the rope-broken necks.

Book Description

On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.

As Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, he generates both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy. In Cold Blood is a work that transcends its moment, yielding poignant insights into the nature of American violence.

Download Description

With the publication of this book, Capote permanently ripped through the barrier separating crime reportage from serious literature. As he reconstructs the 1959 murder of a Kansas farm family and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, Capote generates suspense and empathy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's good.......2007-07-01

People will pick this book up for a lot of reasons: the famous title (and movie); the treatment in the recent movie about Truman Capote; curiosity about this classic work; fascination with 'true crime,' and other reasons. I read it for the first reason, but with a little skepticism for the fawning over Capote and his own historic fascination with the killers Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. What I found was, simply, a very well written book. That the subject matter is a brutal and outragous mass murder is almost an unsavory distraction from the fact that the story is so well told. To my surprise, Capote was never unduly sympathetic to the killers in his writings (as I had been led to believe that he had been). For that matter, the family of victims were themselves portrayed without sentiment. Capote simply built the story very well and painted a complete picture that makes the reader (even nearly 50 years after the incidents occurred) feel the he/she knows all of the players intimately. The crime itself (like other lesser crimes committed by these morons) was disgusting, but, from a literary perspective, I was pleased to be made to literally squirm as Capote lays the story out (again, this is 50 years later). Capote was writing in a more censored society - thus we are mercifully spared many of the gory details. Yet I wonder whether any writer could have communicated the brutality any 'better' - just as old movies use clever techniques to communicate the sex scene (the ol' train going into the tunnel), Capote makes the crime quite clear without having to paint the scene. Masterful.
Two more quick comments. One of the delights of this book is seeing the world of America in 1959. As the reader follows the two aforementioned morons around the USA (and Mexico) on their post-massacre weeks long search for money, work, and happiness, we are treated to a travelogue filled with diners, stolen '56 Chevys, hitchhikers, and Route 66. We also see the challenges of police work before DNA tests, computerized tools, and high-speed communications - and we're amazed that they identified their killers and found them 2,000 miles away. Also, Capote's sense of timing was marvelous. For example, the reader is taken deep into the book (and long past the occurrence of the murders) before Capote reveals the play-by-play of what went on in that house - and when the story is told, it comes from the lips of the shooter himself. Chilling.
I knew about Capote and read a little of his other stuff, but didn't appreciate his gift until I read his masterpiece on the bizarre subject of crime and punishment: In Cold Blood. A must for your canon.

4 out of 5 stars Fast and Affordable Service.......2007-06-27

The shipment was delivered quickly and the price was great. I ahd no problems.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2007-06-15

True story of the murder of a family in Kansas. Capote is amazingly talented and provides the full story on this event in a unique way. Very highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars To Like or Dislike....That Is the Question.......2007-06-08

The nonfiction book In Cold Blood, written by Truman Capote, is a psychological thriller of sorts based on the quadruple homicide of the Clutter family in Holcomb, Kansas, 1959. The story follows the events of both the Clutters and the murderers before the murders, and continues to follow the murderers, as well as the investigators of the case, through the rest of the novel.
I thought it was very smart the way Capote divided the main structure of the book into 4 separate sections: The Last to See Them Alive, Persons Unknown, Answer, and The Corner. This separation helped more in following the different events and stages of what happened: [before] the murder, the investigation, the answers, and the conviction.
Another aspect of the structure that I enjoyed was how Capote wrote the novel presenting perspectives and point-of-views of both the Clutters/investigators/townspeople and the murders `simultaneously'. This helped to create a timeline for things also occurring simultaneously, for example, while Nancy Clutter was baking cherry pies, the murderers were trying to buy pantyhose to wear over their heads.
I admire the research behind this novel. Capote took initiative to get to know the murderers' story, as well as that of the Clutter/investigators and bystanders of the story. Usually, non-fiction novels are written in support of the victim to show and bring justice and light to how gruesome a slaying it was; this book did this, but also `gave' something to the murderers by letting us (the readers) get insight into their lives and giving us one-on-one time with their stories (family background may have caused adult deviance).
Even though I enjoyed most of the book, and how it presented opposing perspectives, it sometimes became confusing and/or annoying. Capote would write in perspectives/dialogue from characters that didn't provide anything to the story, other than the fact that they `didn't know the Clutters, but heard of how nice a family they were'.

3 out of 5 stars Still good, but the nonfiction novel has since improved.......2007-04-09

In Cold Blood tells the true story of the senseless murder of the midwestern Clutter family in the 1950s. The search for and the story of the two pitiful ex cons who were guilty of the horror is the book's focus. Although the nonfiction novel has evolved substantially over the years, Truman Capote is clearly a pioneer in writing captivating non fiction which reads like fiction. The story is well told and interestingly organized. Capote does a seamlessly delicate job of relaying the cold blooded nature of the crime but at the same time giving the reader an opportunity to glimpse the human side of Dick Hickock and Perry Smith from childhood to death row. Capote leaves just enough space for the reader to wonder and interpret things about the telling of the story to make the tale one dimension richer than it seems.

5 out of 5 stars The Dresden Files, book 6.......2007-06-27

I can't say it any clearer than this: you should read every book in this series. Start at the beginning and work your way through to the latest book. If you like fantasy, mystery, suspense...these books will not disappoint. Harry Dresden is an engaging and sympathetic character: funny, determined, intelligent, with just the right amount of angst in his history. And the secondary characters are each equally as interesting. If you've seen the TV series on SciFi channel, you'll love these books. And if you haven't - you should still read these books.

4 out of 5 stars Significant Character Development.......2007-06-05

While the plot of "Blood Rites" seems rather more light and frothy than the previous book "Death Masks", "Blood Rites" also manages to become significant in the journey of its protagonist Harry Dresden.

It's difficult to take psychic (even perhaps sex?) vampires making porn too seriously, but as part of Harry's emotional journey, the events of "Blood Rites" seem to have some great signficance and appear to have consequences which will linger.

A fun read. Essential to the series with some surprisingly serious consequences to what is a more or less relatively light plot (probably because it dals a great deal with Thomas, the vampire introduced to the series in "Grave Peril". In fact, several elements of "Grave Peril" reappear in this book, not as a retread but as a step-forward of the series.)

5 out of 5 stars A Bit of Harry's Past.......2007-05-22

Jim gives us a look into a little of Harry's past. Spectacular book!

5 out of 5 stars dresden.......2007-05-16

like all dresden stories slightly predictable well drawn charecters and plenty of action and introspection by the title charecter a supernatural version of michael connely 's Harry bosch

5 out of 5 stars A juicy read.......2007-04-12

Blood Rites is the 6th addition to the Dresden Files series and it doesn't dissapoint. How can any book that has flaming monkey poo be bad. Yes flaming monkey poo, but thats the kind of off humor taht makes this Series great.

Blood rites has everything that is needed for a great read: a tall dark wizard, handsome and sexy vampires, a cute little puppy, and people generally trying to kill each other all the time. Whats not to love?

I'm serious if you want to escape reality for a while this is a good book to pick up, don't worry if you haven't read the previous books in the series, Jim Butcher does a fantasic job of getting new readers up to speed without annoying the faithful followers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I wish I'd found this series earlier..........2007-06-20

Like several other people, I bought this book because of the TV show "Blood Ties", which I enjoyed, but found cheesy upon occassion. I expected the books to be similar, but was pleasantly surprised.

These novel focus on the actual mystery/action/conflict. There is some sexual tension and little bit of sex, but it more alluded to than shoved in your face (no detailed sex scenes, YAY!!!). The characters of Vicki, Celluci, and Henry are 3-D and well thought out. There are snippits from Henry's past, which I love. It makes him more of a character than on the TV show where he just shows up, does the vampy thing, and goes on. Vicki is an amazing strong heroine who takes no crap from anyone.

As someone else stated, the first novel follows the TV Pilot exactly. I already knew what was going to happen, so it was a little dull. Not because of the writing though. The second novel was very good, with a family of werewolves who are being killed systematically by silver bullets.

Another thing I like about these novels were the "villians". Instead of just pure evil people, like in so many other novels, these villians are fairly normal people who slowly are tempted into evil. Nice touch and more believable.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Characters! Fun plots........2007-06-03

Let me admit up front that I am not particularly a vampire fan and I'm also not particularly a fan of detective fiction. So I was surprised and delighted at these books. I wanted to read them books before watching the series on Lifetime so in spite of being a little dubious I read the first one. What fun!! Huff always seems to write really well rounded and fun characters that you'd like to meet and this book is no exception. Vicki is terrific, Henry is a lot of fun (and although I understand why they made the change to graphic novelist for the TV show I find the idea of a vampire who writes romance novels much funnier), Tony is great(he only appears in the novels since he has his own series of books to possibly turn into shows someday!) and Mike... well... he really grows on me as the series progresses. :-) Anyway - the characters are a delight and the plots are fun. I particularly loved the book with the werewolves!

4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2007-06-01

This book is a re-publish of two books that are, as the author states in the new forward, a little dated (no cell phones, etc.). Other than that, they are very entertaining and engrossing. Definately a good value for a nice read.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Vampire/Detective Fiction.......2007-05-31

I actually got hooked on this series by a relative, I had no idea there was a television series. I had been an avid fan of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series (until it became literary porn) and I'm still big on Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series. I finally cracked Blood Price and I've been devouring each book in this series since. You can't put it down!

Blood Price introduces our main characters - Vicki "Victory" Nelson, an ex-cop turned private investigator due to failing eyesight, Henry Fitzroy, the vampiric bastard son of Henry VIII and now romance novelist, and Detective Michael Celluci, Nelson's complicated lover/friend. Henry's and Vicki's lives become intertwined as they try to solve a series of murders in Toronto that are not of the natural kind.

Blood Trail extends the love triangle that begins at the end of Blood Price as Henry asks Vicki to help solve a killer after a family of werewolves. The plot takes a backseat as Huff insinuates Celluci's character more into the mix and he becomes aware of what Henry truly is.

My advice, buy all the books at one time because even one day between books is too long. I'm so glad they came out with these two-parter volumes, it allows you to get two books for the price of one and much easier to carry it around if you're going on a long trip or something. As the books continue, the love triangle becomes more intricate and the crimes more exciting. Huff is fabulous at conveying emotion and the difficulties of love, I just wish that Vicki wasn't as anti-commitment and unfeminine as Anita Blake.

5 out of 5 stars Historic vampires.......2007-05-21

Tanya Huff is a great writer who utilizes snappy dialogue and multi-faceted characters to spin an addictive tale.
I was interested in the book because I saw the TV series on Lifetime. Knowing that books and TV aren't always the same, (cf. The Dresden Files on Sci Fi, also highly recommended), I was greatly impressed by Ms. Huff's talent in creating an interesting "wounded heroine" who defies pity, a vampire who writes romantic novels, and a by-the-book detective to round out the inevitable love triangle. The passion is there without slumming into soft (or not) porn.
I have since been devouring her other books, both in this series, its follow-up and other series.

Tanya Huff is a charming, creative and intelligent writer. I highly recommend anything she has written.

Book Description

Praise for Blood and Thunder

“Kit Carson’s role in the conquest of the Navajo during and after the Civil War remains one of the most dramatic and significant episodes in the history of the American West. Hampton Sides portrays Carson in the larger context of the conquest of the entire West, including his frequent and often lethal encounters with hostile Native Americans. Unusually, Sides gives full voice to Indian leaders themselves about their trials and tribulations in their dealings with the whites. Here is a national hero on the level of Daniel Boone, presented with all of his flaws and virtues, in the context of American people’s belief that it was their Manifest Destiny to occupy the entire West.”

—Howard Lamar, Sterling Professor Emeritus of History, Yale University and editor of The New Encyclopedia of the American West

“The story of the American West has seldom been told with such intimacy and immediacy. Legendary figures like Kit Carson leap to life and history moves at a pulse-pounding pace—sweeping the reader along with it. Hampton Sides is a terrific storyteller.”

—Candice Millard, author of The River of Doubt

“Hampton Sides doesn't just write a book, he transports the reader to another time and place. With his keen sense of drama and his crackling writing style, this master storyteller has bequeathed us a majestic history of the Old West.”

—James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers and Flyboys

“Blood and Thunder is a big-hearted book whose subject is as expansive as they come. Hampton Sides tackles it with naked pleasure and narrative cunning: In his telling, the vast saga of America’s westward push has a logical center. The dusty town of Santa Fe becomes the nexus around which swirl the fortunes and strategies of a mixed set of serious overachievers, from Kit Carson, the original mountain man, to James K. Polk, the enigmatic president whose achievements, in the dreaded name of Manifest Destiny, were almost biblical in scope. Sides is alive to the exuberance and alert to the tragedy of the taking of the West.”

—Russell Shorto, author of Island at the Center of the World

“For a huge percentage of us immigrant Americans (those whose ancestors arrived after 1492), Hampton Sides fills a gaping hole in our knowledge of American history—a vivid account of how ‘The New Men’ swept away the thriving civilizations of the Native Americans in their conquest of the West.”

—Tony Hillerman

"BLOOD AND THUNDER is a balanced, thoughtful summary of the American conquistadors in the 19th century Southwest. Hampton Sides has re-created violent events and such inflammatory figures as Kit Carson without bias. Carefully researched, thoroughly enjoyable."

-Evan S. Connell, author of SON OF THE MORNING STAR, CUSTER AND THE LITTLE BIGHORN

A Magnificent History of How the West Was Really Won—a Sweeping Tale of Shame and Glory

In the fall of 1846 the venerable Navajo warrior Narbona, greatest of his people’s chieftains, looked down upon the small town of Santa Fe, the stronghold of the Mexican settlers he had been fighting his whole long life. He had come to see if the rumors were true—if an army of blue-suited soldiers had swept in from the East and utterly defeated his ancestral enemies. As Narbona gazed down on the battlements and cannons of a mighty fort the invaders had built, he realized his foes had been vanquished—but what did the arrival of these “New Men” portend for the Navajo?

Narbona could not have known that “The Army of the West,” in the midst of the longest march in American military history, was merely the vanguard of an inexorable tide fueled by a self-righteous ideology now known as “Manifest Destiny.” For twenty years the Navajo, elusive lords of a huge swath of mountainous desert and pasturelands, would ferociously resist the flood of soldiers and settlers who wished to change their ancient way of life or destroy them.

Hampton Sides’s extraordinary book brings the history of the American conquest of the West to ringing life. It is a tale with many heroes and villains, but as is found in the best history, the same person might be both. At the center of it all stands the remarkable figure of Kit Carson—the legendary trapper, scout, and soldier who embodies all the contradictions and ambiguities of the American experience in the West. Brave and clever, beloved by his contemporaries, Carson was an illiterate mountain man who twice married Indian women and understood and respected the tribes better than any other American alive. Yet he was also a cold-blooded killer who willingly followed orders tantamount to massacre. Carson’s almost unimaginable exploits made him a household name when they were written up in pulp novels known as “blood-and-thunders,” but now that name is a bitter curse for contemporary Navajo, who cannot forget his role in the travails of their ancestors.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Manifest destiny realized. . ........2007-06-13

I purchased this book along with Across the High Lonesome (a book I highly recommend BTW!) as part of an Amazon promotion. I wanted "Lonesome" but the title and cover of Blood and Thunder looked too good to pass up! I thought it was fiction and until the book arrived did realize it was non fiction history. Southwestern history as if written by Larry McMurtry! The epic story of the settling of the southwest. The war with Mexico to the forced removal of the Navajo from their lands, the author gives an accounting of the consequences of manifest destiny, he does not play favorites. The white's are shown to have little honor, and while the Indians were lied and cheated they also could be brutal. Central to the story is the Kit Carson, a man of contradictions: extremely intelligent but illiterate; he could speak the native languages, understood the Indian, and even had Indian wives but he also helped in the slaughter and removal from their lands of these same Indians. The book also includes portraits of many of the figures of this period: Stephen Watts Kearny, John Fremont, the Navajo warrior Narbona, and Senator Thomas Benton. Must read for all Americans!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-09

great book I throughly enjoyed it. It gave me a new perspective of the historical events of the American West.

5 out of 5 stars Taste for History.......2007-06-03

A writer once observed, "Fiction should read like history and history should read like fiction."
Hampton Sides accomplishes this in "Blood and Thunder: An Epic of the American West." He weaves the opening of the American west with all the intrigues and passions of the myriad personalities who traveled west in the train of Kit Carson and other mountain men. It reads like a novel but this epic is fact with little author interpretation. The great value of this addition to our conquest story is the skill of the author to resurrect the individuals for modern reading who for some years have been fed revisionist history, both in the classroom and literature.
His extensive bibliography allows the reader to follow in his footsteps if there are questions or conflicting theories as to an event.
Nash Black, author of "Qualifying Laps" and "Taxes, Stumbling Blocks & Taxes for Authors 2007."

5 out of 5 stars More than a Western.......2007-06-02

This is not only a history of the Southwest and a biography of Kit Carson. It is a story of the Navajo culture; a culture that Europeans did not and probably could not understand. It describes the beauty of badlands and of both the whites that claimed it and the indians that were destroyed in it. It's last few pages describe a pilgrimage in which the Navajos return at least to part of their homeland. I have read little that touched me as did these few pages. Mr. Sides does not apologize, does not whine, he just writes non-fiction with incredible clarity and sympathy.

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling history.......2007-06-01

Mr Sides has created a history of the West around memorable characters. His development of the famous Indians [Native Americans] and their enemies and friends is most informative.
This is a must read for anyone interested in how the West part of America was settled and developed, the trials and tribulations of the settlers and Natives.
Sides spent years and significant travels throughout the West to get his material, some of which was developed from first hand naration with participants.

If you've ever wondered why the latest fad diet doesn't work for you... well, there are lots of reasons, mostly the fact that it's a fad diet. But it could also be that you're the wrong blood type for the kinds of foods the diet recommends. Peter D'Adamo makes a persuasive argument that your blood type is an evolutionary marker that tells you which foods you'll process best, and which will be useless calories. He covers the entire range for each of the four blood types, from entrées to condiments and seasonings, and also makes type-specific exercise and lifestyle recommendations.

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

This abridged audiobook introduces Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo's revolutionary approach to dieting based on the connection between blood type and health. Read by audio pro Polly Adams, D'Adamo's bestseller details how different foods affect specific blood types both positively and negatively. We learn that "pastas made from buckwheat are better tolerated for Type Os," and that type As should eliminate all meat from their diet to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. Adams blends an efficient, no-nonsense delivery and warm tones that may remind some of a favorite talk-radio personality. And considering the important subject matter, listeners will appreciate all of these qualities. While some dieters may find the suggestions too progressive--it's recommended that women with a history of breast cancer in their family introduce snails into their diet--this is a beneficial three-hour investment for dieters seeking alternative nutritional plans. (Running time: three hours, two cassettes) --Cate Bick

There is no reasonable scientific basis for the claim that blood type has anything to do with one's proper diet. D'Adamo has never done a controlled study on blood type diets. His assertions are almost completely anecdotal.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book! .......2007-06-21

Mercy Thompson, mechanic and shapeshifter (coyote). I like Mercy because she's not the strongest or the badest woman in this book/series. Nor is she trying to be. She has many friends in low places (mostly male - a girl after my own heart) and of all persuasions; vampires, werewolves, a witch, a ghost, and many more. Mercy is clever not relying on shear brute strength or strength of power to get her out of jams. I'm thoroughly enjoying Patricia Briggs books and am anxiously awaiting the next book(s).

Okay, now to my only criticism of the book/series. She seems to have almost all males in the story sniffing around her. Maybe this is like the saying that men can't "just be friends". Or that they are pretending to be friends till the time is right. It could just be me, but I would like to see more story than love triangles between numerous suitors. (I get that in heaping doses from another author I read.)

5 out of 5 stars Another Solid Book.......2007-06-12

Briggs can't write a bad book. Match that with the ground she's covered with her fantasy over time, well, her published works are like eating at a really nice buffet. :) While some authors get bogged down in one same type of book after another, Briggs is someone who keeps bringing out new ideas. It's always a treat to see what she's come up with each time. She's one of the more enjoyable authors out there and her books always end up on my keeper shelf. What more can you say?

5 out of 5 stars The perfect urban fantasy.......2007-06-07

I have read every single Patricia Briggs book I could find, and the Mercy series is by far my favorite. It's action packed from page one, and every page after that. I absolutely could not put this book down. Definitely A must read!

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-05-30

An excellent read, as is the first book, "Moon Called". Love those tattoos!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first one.......2007-05-21

"Moon Called," author Patricia Briggs' introduction to the shapeshifting Mercy Thompson, was good. "Blood Bound," the sequel, is better.

Mercy lives among werewolves in a society that knows they -- as well as various fae populations -- exist. But Mercy isn't a werewolf; lycanthropy is a culture based in European roots, while Mercy's coyote shape is rooted in Native American lore. She is far less powerful in her coyote form, but has certain advantages, such as a natural resistance to vampiric mind games.

That will prove to be a useful trait in "Blood Bound," which pits Mercy, the local werewolf pack and the community of vampires -- who have not been revealed to the public at large -- against a rogue vampire with a demon in thrall and powerful sorcerous abilities at his command. As the body count rises and key characters are taken out of play, Mercy finds herself fighting an enemy she can't even find, much less defeat with any certainty. To add a delicious layer of tension to the story, her allies may prove as deadly as the sorceror she's hunting -- she definitely can't trust them to watch her back.

And all she really wants to do is keep her garage open for business and tinker in her spare time on her beloved VW Rabbit.

Refreshingly, the romance aspect of the story -- Mercy has two powerful werewolves and maybe a vampire vying for her affections -- is subdued, almost inconsequential to the plot. Some folks might be disappointed, but romance is making such a heavy push into contemporary paranormal fiction, it's almost a relief to see it de-emphasized for a change. Mercy is no heart of stone, but she certainly doesn't feel the need to have a man in her life, for love or protection against the greater dark.

"Blood Bound" is a compelling story with a strong, capable heroine who defies expectations in an increasingly crowded genre. Characters, action and suspense work together smoothly to drive the plot in interesting directions, and readers will hug the pages as Briggs takes unexpected turns.

5 out of 5 stars THE BLOOD BOOKS VOL 1,2&3.......2007-06-27

BOUGHT AND READ ALL 3 VERY GOOD BOOKS AND REALLY
GLAD THEY ARE ON LIFTIME AS A SERIES.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-06-27

I was really disappointed when I read the Blood books. Based on other reviews, I was expecting something better, something more like the Harry Dresden books which are so much fun to read. The Blood books seem to drag on, and the characterization is paper thin. I really wish I could get my money back. I feel cheated.

5 out of 5 stars Blood book vol II.......2007-05-13

One of Tanay Huff's best yet! There was a change in her style for this book and added mystery. A real page turner. I love her chacters and how they interact with each other. A must read for any vampire lover.

5 out of 5 stars The Blood Books, Volume II.......2007-03-21

Wonderful read! Again, Tanya Huff delivers a great story from her series The Blood Books. Very orginal storylines, and memorable characters. If you love reading stories with vampires, zombies, etc., this is one to add to your list!

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-03-15

I love the books and love the show. If you haven't checked out the show Blood Ties yet you must. It's on Lifetime TV on Sundays. The book is a must. You have to get all three.

2 out of 5 stars Not Too Profound.......2007-06-27

I did not have a profound experience utilizing this booklet and gave the booklet away after reading it. It's a skinny little booklet with a little information. In hindsight, I do not recommend this booklet. My recommendation is for the Atkin's book, New Diet Revolution, a great resource for eating healthy and is loaded with good practical information.

Great to take on trips or just out to eat. It is also useful for those days your not feeling yourself and you need some remedies.

5 out of 5 stars Diet book.......2007-06-10

This small in size large in content book is good to take along with you when you go food shopping. A lot of the foods I like, don't like me according to this book and I agree with 93% of this point of view. The book is a fast read and another good reference for you to consider while building your life time diet plan.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-05-29

This is a condensed summary of foods for my blood type. Its small and fits into my purse just fine. I use it for grocery shopping and eating out. The more I use it the better I'm getting and learning/memorizing my plan. I can't believe the improvement this info has brought me as far as my arthritis and alergys go.

3 out of 5 stars Review of Blood Type O Food, Beverage and Supplemental Lists.......2007-05-13

The information is most insightful, although troubling. Just when you think something is or maybe good for you, it's time to think again. It has been difficult to discover that the tastes of childhood or those that I have favored over the years could be a hinderance due to the Blood type diet. Thank you.
