Book Description
True North shows how anyone who follows their internal compass can become an authentic leader. This leadership tour de force is based on research and first-person interviews with 125 of today’s top leaders—with some surprising results. In this important book, acclaimed former Medtronic CEO Bill George and coauthor Peter Sims share the wisdom of these outstanding leaders and describe how you can develop as an authentic leader. True North presents a concrete and comprehensive program for leadership success and shows how to create your own Personal Leadership Development Plan centered on five key areas:
- Knowing your authentic self
- Defining your values and leadership principles
- Understanding your motivations
- Building your support team
- Staying grounded by integrating all aspects of your life
True North offers an opportunity for anyone to transform their leadership path and become the authentic leader they were born to be.
Personal, original, and illuminating stories from Warren Bennis, Sir Adrian Cadbury, George Shultz (former U.S. secretary of state), Charles Schwab, John Whitehead (Cochairman, Goldman Sachs), Anne Mulcahy (CEO, Xerox), Howard Schultz (CEO, Starbucks), Dan Vasella (CEO, Novartis), John Brennan (Chairman, Vanguard), Carol Tome (CFO, Home Depot), Donna Dubinsky (CEO/cofounder, Palm), Alan Horn (President, Warner Brothers), Ann Moore (CEO, Time, Inc.) and many others illustrate the transitions that shape the type of leaders who will thrive in the 21st century.
Bill George (Cambridge, MA) has spent over 30 years in executive leadership positions at Litton, Honeywell, and Medtronic. As CEO of Medtronic, he built the company into the world’s leading medical technology company as its market capitalization increased from $1.1 billion to $60 billion. Since 2004, he has been a professor at the Harvard Business School. His 2004 book Authentic Leadership (0-7879-7528-1) was a BusinessWeek bestseller. Peter Sims (San Francisco, CA) established “Leadership Perspectives,” a course on leadership development at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and cofounded the London office of Summit Partners, a leading investment firm.

A Keeper!.......2007-06-26
This book is chock full of good advise on how to build your self-awareness to become a better leader. His concept of life crucibles was very enlightening for me. The author help me connect the dots in my professional career. Each chapter has helpful leadership exercises to encourage the reader to personalize the content of each concept.
Personal/ professional development is a life-long journey and this book is a great companion for anyone who really desires to grow.
Excellent treatise on ethical leadership .......2007-06-01
Considering the intangible nature of leadership, those who read about it want to know that those who write about it are properly experienced and credentialed. Bill George certainly qualifies. He is a management professor at the Harvard Business School, a member of several corporate boards, and the former chairman and CEO of Medtronic, the medical technology stalwart. George, and writer Peter Sims, the founder of an investment company, interviewed 125 leaders to discover what authentic, ethical leadership is all about, what its essence is and what it requires. This book represents the fruits of their enlightened, comprehensive research efforts. We recommend it to anyone who leads others. George and Sims see leadership as a quest, not a destination. This book is an excellent starting point for your journey.
To thine own self be true........2007-05-29
Perhaps the best summary of this book is the quote from Shakespeare: 'To thine own self be true.'
This book is basically a series of reports from CEO's of various companies. The general tone is that you need to understand your own strengths and weaknesses and select the business or corporation where you can excel. And perhaps foremost among the decisions you have to make is the one about just what it is that you really want to do.
Each chapter begins with some general discussion about a leadership topic. After that, the comments from selected business leaders further extend and explain the points brought up in the introductory section. Many, perhaps most - I really didn't count them, of the CEO's being interviewed had some defining moment of pain of tragedy that helped them to define there lives. Few had an easy path. But all of them have a good idea of who and where they are.
find your purpose.......2007-05-29
Helped me make up my mind on what do i want to do rest of my life. Thanks to Bill i know what motivates me deep within.
pulls it all together.......2007-05-18
The book is beautiful in its simplicty. The author divides leadership into various areas and discusses it. He brings in interview with other CEO's to give the chapter clarity.

Book Description
Thorough and up-to-date, this book supports any of the most popular approaches to AIS: focus on transaction cycles and controls; focus on systems life cycle; focus on databases and data modeling; or focus on computer-based controls, fraud and auditing.
The book begins with an overview and conceptual foundations then goes on to discuss control and audit of accounting information systems, accounting information systems applications, and the systems development process.
For CPAs and corporate accountants.

Yawning Hell.......2006-05-31
Is this the world's most boring book ? Technically competent but painfully dry. A gift too insomniacs. Good luck on getting past page 1 !
Only Buy if Required for a Class.......2005-05-09
Very boring reading. Chapters tend to repeat themselves. The class I had for this book was one of the most boring classes I ever had. Instructor lectured from power point slides. I could have taken this class homestudy and done just fine, than to sit in class.
Caution: Will Cause Drowsiness........2004-04-03
This book is simply horrible. It takes the stereotypical accountant and shoves him into the pages. It is so lethargic and monotonous that all the valuable information within the book just stops making sense. This book should be read by anyone who has doubts about becoming an accountant. They'll drop everything and go into premed. Horrible!
Agreed. Boring as dirt........2003-05-10
Everything you need is in here, but the book truly is boring as dirt. If you need it for a class, fine. But do not buy it if you just want something to read.
Comprehensive but boring.......1999-09-12
This is a very comprehensive textbook of the subject. It deals with just about every aspect of the AIS realm. It is, however, a very dull book. There isn't much illustrating, no color, and absolutely no life beyond the black and white wasteland of its pages.

Customer Reviews:
Not very good for a new comer.......2006-09-08
This book does contain some good information. The problem, however, is that it is not easy to read or follow. This book contains too many non useful graphics and not enough detailed examples. In other words it's real pretty. At the end of each chapter there are Case Studies for the students. In many cases the book did not give enough information on how to complete them properly. I often found myself searching the internet to find answers. This book might be good for someone that has worked as an IT professional. As a new comer, however, I wouldn't recommend it. I'm going to search for a better book.
Great delivery response time........2006-03-23
The item was shipped promptly and arrived in great condition. Thanks so much for the timely shipping, as the text was used for spring semester at school.
I have not received the product yet.......2005-10-02
I think the process is too slow. I have not received the product since I paid it a month ago. Since there's some statement says it would take 6 weeks, I will wait until that day.
Good overview of SAD but not good for serious SAD study.......2004-07-05
For beginners to Systems Analysis & Design I would recommend this textbook, however do not rely on this for a serious study of Systems Analysis & Design. This book is easy to read, but the "This technique is so great, note - there are some disadvantages" can get annoying at times. Maybe this book could be used as an overview of SAD for managers. Also, the Student Study Guide provided on CD-ROM with the text is not useful for quick review of the text for an exam as each chapter takes up 80 slides and each review of each chapter takes a while to read.
Comprehensive Introduction.......2004-06-20
Ok, firstly this book has excellent presentation and pedagogy. Somebody took some serious care to ensure this book is visually pleasing and well organized. It contains a CD-rom with summaries of each chapter as well as well as weblinks, glossaries of each chapter and chapter outlines. There are no design tools CASE tools however.
Content: This book is a very good introduction to systems analysis and design: the operative word being INTRODUCTION. It paints a very broad picture in reasonable detail. There are enough examples and explanation to be able to extrapolate how to do very basic structured systems analysis. Object oriented analysis on the other hand while covered, is done so in a fairly rudimentary manner (in a toolkit- ie. appendix- rather than in the body of the book). This book is less about the mechanics of how and more about the why and why not and what you're likely to need before you do do some systems analysis. Personally I think the book by WHitten (isbn 0072552360) provides more bang for your buck in that it covers functional decomposition, functional primitives, decision tables, databases, ERDs, prototyping, OO analysis and design in greater depth and with more reality and for significantly less money. WHitten is far less accessible though, the price of being far more technical than this one- and it is fairly old now. This book is very accessible, but that comes at the cost of content. If you want deeper how-to, try Whitten...if you want a easier overview then try this. However the price is quite significant for this book.
Pedagogy wise, this book is very good. Lots of pratical examples and expositions of real life situations, review questions (no answers) directions to a web site to chase down further understanding and knowledge. A case study permeates the book which makes it very accessible because the case study I found was interesting and quite 'likely'. The toolkits (ie. appendices) are quite interesting, if somewhat 'lite'. To me, they seemed more of a checklist and point of reference than a substantive learning source.
So, in all, a nice, neat book, if rather expensive though. Look at it if you're looking for a broad overview and/or a jumping off point for systems analysis and design. ELsewhere may provide you with work of a more concrete, down to brass-tacks (leveling) nature. It can also serve as a reasonable adjunct to a more technical text, to clarify concepts and provide a philosophical overview of systems analysis and design as well as clarifying some concepts in a clear, concise way. It probably won't teach you 'deep thought' systems analysis and design however.

This seller sent the wrong text with the wrong ISBN, even though it is an edition of this text, it's not what was advertised. Also, I paid for expedited shipping and received it non-priority along with making an extra donation who pocketed the difference. BEWARE!!!

Excellent survey of operations management.......2007-02-07
This book is comprehensive, up-to-date and well-written. The 'technical notes' appended to some chapters provide a little mathematical underpinning to discussions of topics like queuing theory, SPC, and linear programming, but the emphasis is on practical applications and there are plenty of worked examples.
The target audience deserves to be much greater than aspiring or actual manufacturing managers. By setting OM within a strategic context, by addressing both services and products, and by covering the entire product lifecycle, this book equips anybody concerned with performance improvement in any business with an indispensable toolbox. It's virtually an MBA in a box.

Great textbook for OM class. It has DVD and other supplemental applications that are helpful for learning more. I use this book for an online class and reading the materials are easy to understand. The authors are very knowledgeable and their examples are good. I especially like the videos on the DVD.

Above and Beyond Other Textbooks.......2007-01-17
This is a fabulous textbook. The descriptions are clear and there is always a picture following in case you are a visual learner. The greatest thing about this book is that it provides so many ways to study. The book has a website and a CD rom, where you can read the book, do very helpful activities, hear MP3 tutor sessions with the author and more. If you don't understand something, there are so many ways to study it, that it won't take long before you will.
What a Savings!!!.......2006-11-23
When I first purchased this book from my school bookstore, I gulped after looking at their price tag over $130. After returning it and purchansing a used copy from Amazon, I couldn't believe the condition that it was in. It was "like new" just the way my seller claimed it to be.
I feel educated every time I use this book..........2006-03-11
This is a great book!! I'm an English Lit. major and wanted to focus a bit on science and got myself this book. It's so wonderfully written! It explains very clearly and it has a CD-rom with excercises. Even if you're not taking an intro-biology course this book is useful and easy to use for self study. The book is devided into theme chapters and covers about everything you can think of in the natural world. It's no doubt a very good introduction to further study in biology. I feel educated every time I use this book!
I'd give more than 5 stars if that was possible.
Good Book For Class.......2005-09-06
This book will definitely get the job done. I just needed a book for my class and this works out great. It was in good condition and didn't have any highlighting marks in it.

Book Description
This brief version of Gravetter and Wallnau's proven best-seller offers the straightforward instruction, accuracy, built-in learning aids, and wealth of real-world examples that professors AND students have come to appreciate. The authors take time to explain statistical procedures so that students can go beyond memorizing formulas and gain a conceptual understanding of statistics. By integrating applications to ensure that even students with a weak background in mathematics can understand statistics, the authors skillfully demonstrate that having an understanding of statistical procedures help them comprehend published findings, and become savvy consumers of information. Known for its exceptional accuracy and examples, this text also has a complete supplements package to support instructors with class preparation and testing.
Customer Reviews:
Great for people who ask "but why..." at the end of every statement. .......2006-05-10
This book is absolutely excellent. I have looked through other stats books and lost interest immediately, but this book is written in such a way that it actually makes you want to learn the material. Rather than just telling you how to solve the problem, the authors inform you as to why learning it is necessary, and frequently give you real-life, interesting scenarios regarding how specific formulas are used by psychologists.
Statistics, of course, becomes progressively more difficult over time, and you may need to seek outside help once you reach the last few chapters in particular. However, I believe that this book is the best of its kind, and it might be worth purchasing even if it is not your primary source for class, etc.
Good moral support.......2006-03-23
My first impression was that this book was priceless since it really helped me through the first couple of chapters in the main text. At the beginning it goes into lengthy, step-by-step instructions. I may not have felt as confident in the class if it had not been for this supplement. Once I reached chapter 6 and 7 it was all over! There was not enough information to help me understand what the book was losing me on, I needed to seek private tutoring at this point. Occasionally I still go to the book in the hopes that it can pick me up and get me through the homework but it does not. These later chapters may be too complicated to go into in a study guide but what would a study guide be for if not walking you through the steps? I am glad I bought it, just dissappointed that it quit so early.
Fantastic Statistics Resource.......2005-09-22
This is the very best statistics book that I have purchased (and I have purchased 5 others trying to help me get a grasp on this subject)! I would recommend it to anyone who needs an easy--to-read and easy-to-understand textbook on this difficult subject! I hope it helps you as much as it has helped me!
Wow! Clear, Concise, Excellent Book.......2005-05-19
Having seriously struggled for the last two years with the statistics side of my Psychology studies, this book has really made things so much clearer. An excellent book for anyone struggling to grasp the basic statistical concepts required in behavioral sciences.
One of the Best Intro to Stats Texts.......2004-05-11
Having taken statistics before, I know a good book when I see one. This is hands down, one of the best intro to stats book. Unlike other stats textbooks, Essentials gives you the information in a concise manner accompanied by varied step-by-step examples towards understanding all the statistical tests. Psychology students have it lucky to have a book like this.

This book is jam packed and jelly shut with powerful information for the sharp expert who simply needs to just fine tune his or her skills. This is also a must for every primary caregivers personal library.
better, but could still use improvement.......2007-03-04
Several chapters, such as the one on the spine, lower extremities, skin, and pulmonary system are, indeed, quite well-written and fairly easy to follow.
The chapter on upper extremities, however, is simply in deplorable shape.
Moreover, the AMA guides did not do a good job of explaining when it is appropriate to use a certain method and when it is not. in many cases, the evaluator is not sure which method to use, even after a careful reading of the guides.
The overarching philosophy of the Guides is not explained as well as it should be.
All in all, however, a vast improvement over the much more difficult to use fourth edition.
needless to say, a physician using this book needs both an instructor and an appropriate patient population to refine his/her skills as a disability evaluator.
Better than Ambiem and a shot .......2007-01-10
Absolutely the best bedtime reading to fall quickly asleep. Much more effective than 1-4th Editions. Richard S Glosser MD Orthopedic Surgeon.
AMA Guides.......2007-01-04
It's the standard. Can't get around it. Examples are very good. Read through the examples for a thorough understanding and you'll be fine.
Business purchase.......2006-02-28
I ordered these for independent adjusters who work for my firm, and they find them indispensable. Because I am not an adjuster, I am unable to evaluate them.

Good Resource.......2007-05-12
This is an excellent book for someone with a basic to moderate knowledge of office products who wants to learn more. The book does a good job of covering basic concepts and an excellent job of describing the different methods and shortcuts to perform a particular task.
SHELLY CASHMAN'S BOOKS ARE GREAT.......2007-03-08
I have used Shelly Cashman's books since 1988. A step-by-step learning tool that you cannot go wrong with. After you used this book or any in the series you will not try another. The SAM Training Companion CD and the Fast Cards that are with the book are very helpful. The OTHER WAY BOXES AND QUICK REFERENCE SUMMARY can get you out of any situation you get yourself into. The IN THE LAB projects after each chapter are a excellent way to reinforce your skills.
When I need to learn something new or update my skills I reference Shelly Cashman Series first. Or I just do not learn it!!!

Book Description
The fifth edition of this landmark reference continues the tradition of offering the highest quality research and representing the best scholarship in the field. The selected pieces, 70% of which are new to this edition, will help educators develop an understanding of reading and literacy research and the ability to apply that understanding in generating new research and informing instructional decision making.
The volume is organized into the following sections:
Perspectives on Literacy Research and Its Application: Viewing the Past, Envisioning the Future
Processes of Reading and Literacy
Models of Reading and Writing Processes
Literacy's New Horizons: An Emerging Agenda for Tomorrow's Research and Practice
Although pieces from past editions of Theoretical Models and Processes of Reading have been retained, the editors highlight more recent works that reflect new findings and promising directions in the field. Section One contextualizes the fifth edition in today's rapidly changing literacy scene. Section Two emphasizes the role that sociocognition and literacy development play in reading processes, provides a catalog of key factors influencing the acquisition and mastery of reading processes, and explores the role of teaching and tutoring in literacy development. Section Three presents models that represent markedly different reading and writing theories. Section Four focuses on literacy's future potential to develop insights into reading processes, instruction, technology, and educational policy.
Questions for Reflection accompany each section to assist readers in transforming their current knowledge base through discussion and deeper thinking about theory, research, and instruction. Plus, a supplementary CD includes a number of other classic and recent research pieces to enrich readers' understanding of the selections in this updated volume.
Theoretical Models and Processes of Reading, Fifth Edition, is an invaluable resource for teacher educators, curriculum and administrative leaders, graduate students, and researchers in their efforts to help individuals learn to read and understand language.

Essential Biology is a brief non-majors biology book that combines clear writing, real-world applications, vivid art, and powerful media to teach readers the important concepts of biology and give them an appreciation for how biology relates to their everyday lives. In the
Second Edition, best-selling authors Neil Campbell and Jane Reece are joined by Eric Simon, who uses his experience teaching non-majors biology to keep the book both accessible and up to date. To help readers become informed citizens, the new edition features even more human applications and up-to-date information on important issues like DNA technology, cloning, and global warming.
KEY TOPICS The book covers four major biological topics Ð cells, genetics, evolution/diversity, and ecology Ð and uses evolution as an overarching theme to tie all 20 chapters together.
For college instructors, students, or anyone interested in biology.

Textbook vs Outline.......2007-02-07
Be sure to double check your ISBN numbers to make sure you know what you're getting. I was careless and ended up with this Outline rather than the actual Textbook. The outline having a deceiving title w/ what looks like a typo "2nd Editio" ~ "2nd Edition"
Buyers please be careful w/ your purchases and double check what you're ordering. Personally I found this outline to be useless.
Bio Book.......2005-10-12
I needed this book for college. At the college book store the same exact book was $120.00 plus tax. On Amazon it was $80.00!!
Depth and Accuracy.......2003-03-01
Campbell and Reece are best known as the authors of the hefty and excellent "Biology", now in it's 6th edition used by undegraduate biology majors and AP Biology students.
"Essential Biology" uses a different approach. The authors have packed a great deal into this amazingly small textbook. I recently reviewed a huge number of introductory biology texts for adoption in our school district. We use Campbell and Reece's Biology, 6th edition for our AP biology course but were looking for a textbook to use with our 9th grade honors biology students.
After a lengthy comparison of textbooks we picked "Essential Biology" based on several things. First we found the book to be accurate, readable, and concise. We felt that it would give the students a depth of understanding in the core biological principles so that they would be ready when they moved on to AP biology later in their high school career.
Instead of trying to "cover" everything under the biological sun, "Essential Biology" focuses on four core biological topics: cells, genetics, evolution, and ecology. It's 20 chapters are broken up into these 4 units and does a wonderful job of pulling it all together.
Other textbooks certainly cover more material but with less depth. What is the use of having a huge textbook that the students either never finish or rush through with no real understanding? This is a textbook that the students can dig into and throughly understand during one course.
It is supported by CD-ROM's and on-line material. The website provides activities, on-line labs, quizes, and other practice. Students can print out results or e-mail them to their teachers.
I would recommend this text as one for use in a non-majors biology course or as an advanced high school biology introductory course.
