Customer Reviews:
Finally, a real solution!.......2007-06-27
Elizabeth Pantley has done her time as a parent, done her research and her soul searching, and has done all of us parents a huge favour by writing and publishing this book. I was searching for another way to help our family get more sleep and now I can see an end in sight. I co-sleep, breastfeed and will not let my baby cry, and I was starting to feel like an alien with all the advice to wean, put baby in a crib in another room and "let" him cry. It is such a relief to have advice and solutions presented that are in line with my and my husband's ideas of parenting and also see how they can work if baby doesn't breastfeed or co-sleep. These solutions are for everyone. Most importantly they keep baby's spirit intact by being non-invasive and always gentle. I highly recommend this book to all parents of babies who do not sleep through the night.
very informative and helpful.......2007-06-14
we've really liked having this book, if you follow her advice your baby should sleep much better, very soon!
Honestly I quit reading it.......2007-06-13
Basically this stays to establish a routine, It just takes a lot of words to say it. But if you are desperate (a all parents are) it can be very helpful. Takes different methods and helps you to create a routine that works for you
Strategies May Cause More Crying.......2007-06-11
I think that Pantley's advice has a major flaw. When she outlines her steps to getting a child to sleep, she says that if the child won't fall asleep using her strategy and you are getting frustrated, just to go back to what you were doing before. By doing this you are only teaching your child that all they need to do is cry and get picked up and put down for a long time and eventually you will do what you have always done to get them to sleep (which wasn't working for you if you are trying this new method). Of course you don't want your child to cry himself to sleep, but you also don't want to cry yourself to sleep either. Your baby needs a well-rested and sane mother most of all. Whatever method you use to get your child to sleep, you must be consistent and this book does not embrace that and encourages you to backtrack.
Lots of useful suggestions--No need to "Cry it Out".......2007-06-05
I see no reason to force my son to cry himself to sleep when there are other options. This book has a lot of suggestions for getting your little one to sleep without the screaming tantrums.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent and touching.......2006-03-23
This book has been on my keeper shelf through half a dozen moves and I read it every so often. It's creepy to imagine just what a single mother would ignore for the sake of a better life for her young children. Jenny McPartland is an art gallery assistant in deep finacial troubles and when Mr. too good to be true, Erich Kruger shows up and dazzels her with the high life, Jenny doesn't think twice about it. She and her two young daughters are whisked away to the wilds of Minnesota where Jenny begins to discover Erich may not be the man she thinks he is.
Do yourself a favor and read this book, it stays with you.
Seriously Spooky!.......2006-02-17
MHC writes mostly suspense that really only get seriously frightening at the end. Not this one - its terrifying. This woman marries a man who turns out to be a maniac. The story of her and her two children is very scary. While not a book I would reread (too scary), it is definitely one to remember.
One of Clark's Best I've Read-A Suspense Classic for Sure!.......2006-01-16
I really enjoyed this book to the fullest, and found it hard to put down at all.
Jenny MacPartland, a single mother of 2 little girls, meets Erich Krueger, the man of her dreams. Or so it appears. The two hit it off, and they marry quickly in spite of Jenny's friends warnings and first impressions of Eric. So suddenly, Jenny and the girls, along with Erich, move to Minnesota to live in Eric's beautiful mansion. But once there, Jenny discovers what a REAL eye-opener marriage can be. Erich begins acting strangely, and speaks of his late mother Caroline whom he is unaturally obsessed with it seems. Jenny holds an uncanny resemblance to Caroline, and Erich grows more and more possessive of her. He never wants her out of sight, yet, he refuses to sleep in the same bed most of the time. He's busy. In the cabin. What lies behind the walls of the cabin are deadly, horrible secrets. And when Jenny uncovers what Erich is really like after he takes the girls from her, she may need to run for her life.
A can't put down book.......2005-09-09
The characters were very well devoloped to provoke emotion from the reader throughout the novel. To keep the reader guessing from cover to cover, with plot twists galore sending the reader on an emotional rollercoaster ride they will never forget is the mark of a truely great author. No wonder they call her the queen of suspence!

good book, even for kids.......2005-07-24
This book is probably the best book for kids to read. It has a more basic plotline, and an easier to understand format. At first, this book is slow, and it is written like a 13 year-old target author. What makes the book interesting for other kids, is that it is a a mystery of the mind. It is a physcoligic way of showing Jenny (the main character's feelings.) It does a great job of going in depth of the character. It's great because you can try to figure out the mystery, how Jenny uncovers her past, and horrible secrets that she has forgotten. You learn about the mind, and people's actions (how people cover up their feelings, anger...etc.) I reccomend this to any 13 year old or younger that is looking for a challenge, and wants to learn about the mind, and how human react and learn.

This book is wonderful for family road trips, only if there are no young kids! I read a lot but everyone knows its difficult to read in the wind or bright sunshine so why not read without the words! Plus these books will keep you in suspense forever and its great conversation if you listen to it with friends!

Book Description
The New York Times called her a "master of horror," and her harrowing, best-selling stories are chilling proof. First time together in a collection sure to shock, three national bestsellers:
Weep No More My Lady, A Cry in the Night, and
Stillwatch. Even the price is thrilling!
Customer Reviews:
Stillwatch.......2002-02-19
If you enjoy these suspenseful books, then this is the book for you. It's a book about a woman named Pat, who is a reporter for a local cable news station that is doing a segment on Senator Abbigal Jennings and how she may become the first female Vice President. Along the way she comes into problems. Pat is starting to get threats about the airing of the segment. What could the Senator be hiding that could put herself at danger to not get elected the first female Vice President?
Where are the children.......2002-01-03
I have to say that the book started out pretty slow, but it got more and more interesting as you read it.
I have read several suspense books by this author, but I have to say that I believe that this is the best ever.
Mysteriously interesting.......2001-06-26
Being an ardent Agatha Christie fan, Mary Higgins Clark was recommended to me and this was the first volume of her books that I read.
There aren't any detectives like Hercules Poirot or Miss Marple still the stories keep you glued to the book till you reach the end.
'Weep no more, my lady' has a certain Christie's touch. The story is about a young woman Elizabeth. Her sister, Leila is murdered and Ted, her sister's fiance is convicted, with Elizebeth being the only witness. There are other charachters like Leila's friend the Baron and Baroness, her agent, another rival actress. The interesting thing is that each charachter has some motive for the murder. And finally the real murderer turns out to be... (You have to read the book to find out).
'Stillwatch' is about a young reporter who is making a television documentary. But what she does NOT know is that this documentary is linked to her past and will affect her present life. Not much of a mystery here but still an interesting read.
'A cry in the night' reminded me of Alfred Hitchcock's movie Psycho and hence the reason for 4 stars.
A good selection for those who have a preference for mysteries (minus politics, violence and sex).
mary higgins clark.......2001-01-07
i find her books so engrosing that i can not put them down until i find out who did it. her method of delivery always leaves you guessing. i would recommend these books highly to anyone.
Better selections....2 out of 3.......2000-09-25
I read all stories & enjoyed most of them. I would say, this is a 4 1/2 starrer. The only thing keeping me from giving it a 5 is that I didn't like the "Cry in the Night" so much. Had it been "Where are the Children", I would have given it a 10 star rate, if there is such a thing :-)Moreover, I like the compilation here better than the other MHC trilogy.
After reading 6 MHC stories in a row, I am becoming familiar with her style & events albeit characters taking on different forms. Nevertheless, her books are interesting & will make you lose track of time.

Book Description
Ellen had never been out of the low hill country of northeastern Mississippi. Since the death of her mother many years before, and the death of her younger brother only a year or so earlier, she and her father had shared their cabin and five acres of land alone. Except for Sleet, the horse that-because he feared lightning and thunder-had thrown and killed her brother.
Ellen was terrified of Sleet. It was summer. Ellen's father's newest job-he had had many-was as a calendar salesman, so he was gone a great deal of the time. Her only contact with the outside world was through the telephone and news programs on the TV. The family's nearest neighbor was Granny Bo, an old woman full of stories of days past and dark forebodings about the present and future, which she read from signs and portents she clearly accepted as true. Ellen believed and shared Granny Bo's fears even when she did not want to.
Then, stirring events in the nearby town, a stranger and his wife living in a nearby abandoned house, a kidnapping, and deeper and deeper questions in Ellen's mind about everyone she knew-including her father and Granny Bo-conspired to make Ellen face her fears and find her courage, just when it was most needed.
Customer Reviews:
You can't put it down!!!.......2003-03-14
The Night Cry is one of the best books I have ever read!! It is about a young girl and her father. The girl's father gets a job and she has to stay alone for a week. Some unexpecting things happen when she is there. She winds up trying to rescue a small boy that was kidnapped out of his own room. I chose this book because I like horses and on the cover there was a horse. My favorite character was the Grandma because she was funny and mysterious. Everyone in town thought she was crazy. The best part was when the girl was in the barn trying to find out a way to rescue the boy. She finally busted out of the barn on the horse. I liked that part because she hadn't ridden the horse since her brother got kicked off and was killed. The only bad thing about this book is that it is very predictable. Otherwise it was very good!!
It was OK!.......2002-04-10
I thought this book was an ok reading book. I am in 8th grade and I thought it was a little young for me. It could have been better.

Amazing Story of Courage and Survival.......2001-03-20
I had never heard of Jean Small Brinson until I picked up this book at the UNL bookstore. I read it in one day! If you or anyone you know has ever had to deal with an abusive family member, this is a must read. Brinson tells of her abusive father, her escapes with her mother, how she had to beat her mother in order to save her, and she also tells of her development of MPD. This book made me angry, it made me hurt, it made me cry, but most importantly it made me remember my own experiences. It let me know that I was not the only person out there who had experienced pain, hatred, and abuse of all kinds. Again, this is a must read.

Book Description
In 1997, Rev. Dr. Betsie H. Poinsett experienced something no parent should have to - the death of her only child, her 21-year-old "Indigo" son, Bennett. Throughout his short life he seemed to walk to the beat of a different drummer. As Betsie would awaken in the middle of the night with feelings of helplessness, knowing that his behavior was spiraling out of control, the only thing she could do in those wee dark hours would be to go to her computer and start writing to relieve her fears. Thus, Mothers Who Cry in the Night, originated. It takes the reader through those long lonely nights, giving them strategies to turn these out of control feelings around, and to learn how to rebuild themselves to understand that God and Love are the foundation that they can constantly return to when these dark nights of the soul envelope them.
Customer Reviews:
Mothers Who Cry in the Night : The Ultimate Gift of Love.......2006-03-16
I have only read about 50 pages and already this book has touched my life in a profound way. Any mother or parent who has had to deal with a challenging child with find great comfort and wisdom in these pages.
Extraordinary son, extraordinary mother, a tale of unconditional love........2006-01-10
The true story of the relationship between mother and son is told throughout this book, along with many helpful and insightful tools in spirituality. The heart of the book is a deep, unconditional love, which the reader can feel and learn from. The lessons of letting go, finding inner strength, and finding balance in any dynamic relationship are some of the core things I enjoyed in the book. Bennett's poetry and some of his essence is also captured in the extraordinary tale that he left for so many to learn and heal from. A wonderful, healing, magical book.
Understanding our lives.......2005-05-22
"Mothers who cry in the night" is a phenomenal read. It starts as a journal, looking for answers to the confusing enigma that is her child. As the answers make themselves known, so does the free spirit that is Bennett. We, the readers, take a swirling ride that is not only in the life of Betsie the adoring, saddened mother but also that of Bennett, a life-force uncomfortable in these earthly surroundings, searching for his own reality, his propose. It not only helped me to have a better understanding of the correlation between genius and addiction (self medicating), but also to better understand my own purpose in this life and what will come after. We are all the same journey and it has no conclusion, only growth.
Nanette Cookson
A must read for parents with challenging children.......2005-04-19
Mothers Who Cry in the Night by Rev. Dr. Betsie Poinsett is a must read for anyone who has felt the frustration of caring for an unhappy child. The book takes the reader on the journey of life with a child who doesn't fit in, can not find happiness and causes much worry and frustration for himself and his parents. It is a beautiful story of love that eventually transcends the
physical and emotional pain to find a place of peace and understanding. Dr. Poinsett easily relates her heart felt feelings and shares the turmoil of raising a child that seems to be of a different world. I recommend Mothers Who Cry in the Night to all mothers or anyone who loves children.

Disappointed.......2006-08-30
I think Beverly Lewis is one of the BEST authors! However, I was very disappointed to get this shipment. There was NO mention that these were children's books! In the future, I hope you will mention this in the description.
A Preview of the Summer Hill Secrets collection.......2000-07-19
These are exceptionally well written books! The story makes youfeel like you also have an Amish family as neighbors. You can learnabout a young girl's life and her many adventures with friends, school, and family. Although not everyone is facing the same dilemas as Merry ,the main character in these books, many can relate to having friendships that are worth a sacrafice. I recommend these books to everyone. It will keep you interested for hours.

Some crimes, not even the "world's greatest detective" can solve........2006-06-29
The Dark Knight Detective finds himself in yet another mind-teasing mystery when a new vigilante with his/her own brand of violent justice comes to town, targeting child abusers. There is a certain, sick pattern to the assailant's crimes, the particular way he/she kills his/her victims--it's as though the vigilante administers justice and is out for blood at the same time. With Commissioner James Gordon dealing with illegal drug dealers and personal family issues, Batman's only hope of capturing this new villain lies in the hands of a young girl, who's too afraid to talk.
This nifty little Bat tale is great! Archie Goodwin's noir-style writing works on a level that fits the Batman and the dark world he haunts so perfectly by today's standards of Bat storytelling--Goodwin writes Batman in a cold world full of corruption, sin, and fear, and without compassion, something the great Frank Miller started in the 80s with his acclaimed "The Dark Knight Returns." The best, and yet hardest, part to look at in Goodwin's personal rendition of everyone's favorite Dark Knight is the blunt, honest light he sheds on the awful truth about child abusers: most of them NEVER stop. In the past Batman has fought some of the most powerful of crime bosses, most corrupt of elected officials, and of course, has time and time again put away the most colorful, most recognized rogue arch enemies--the Joker, Two-Face, Riddler, Penguin, etc. (none of which you will find here, mind you)--but child abuse crimes are committed behind closed doors, ones that the Batman cannot enter without being naturally violating himself. Even the man who walks where cops can't even go, can only go so far before crossing the line. If anything, Goodwin's often overlooked "Night Cries" arc shows the Batman at his uttermost human and the effect it has on the reader is incredible. Another unexpected, but welcome, addition is the fact that Batman, despite having stopped the vigilante, is not the true winner, but instead Commissioner Gordon. As Batman deals with his own problems with the killer, Gordon is placed into the shoes of the abused/abuser and Goodwin brilliantly uses this to his creative advantage to outline the "gray" area of the "black-and-white" morality of the story. "Night Cries" is a genuine detective/crime drama tale from start to finish. In addiiton to Goodwin's writing, there is some fantastic, atmospheric artwork by Scott Hampton here. Each page is dark and brooding, and makes the reader feel he/she's in hell, which is basically what the story and Gotham City itself is.
Not a single word or event is wasted or out of place. Child abuse is an evil is beyond question in the world of the Batman, but what to do about those who cannot or will not stop their actions? How can you prevent people from committing crimes in the privacy of their own homes? Goodwin provides no easy solutions, a rather honest route for him to take in a world where otherwise the heroes always triumph over the villains. That point alone is worth owning this overlooked piece of crime literature!
A unique storyline.......2005-07-13
The Batman novel "Night Cries" is one which explores a very difficult and taboo subject: child abuse. Batman is pushed into the world of child abuse when the abusers are killed methodically by an emerging serial killer.
There is a moment of desperation when Batman realizes even he cannot prevent all the injustice and suffering in the world. At that moment, the normally cold and calculating appearance of Batman withers for just a moment to reveal the young boy who made a compassionate vow on the eve of his parents' murder.
How to handle child abuse? Unlike robbery or homicide, it is hard to prove and difficult to prosecute. Even Batman's stomach turns as he must occasionally watch from the shadows helplessly like the little children who are abused. If you want something that is more about the action, this may not be it for you; it is a tragedy and also about a difficult subject.
The art is gripping. I think it is really good for establishing a depressing mood which is appropriate for the tragedies that unfold in the story. Just be careful with this one, it is a heartbreaking story.
The Children Cry.......2005-06-19
Batman: Night Cries is a graphic novel that takes place in the early years of the Batman mythos, and has him and newly-appointed Commissioner Gordon tracking a series of gruesome murders linked to child abuse. As the story unfolds, Gordon is forced to confront how his own anger issues are straining the relationship with his wife and son.
This is a beautifully painted and crafted story that explores the issue of child abuse well, with two minor flaws. The first is a melodramatic final page that has Batman screaming into the night because he can't help all the crying children. I appreciate Goodwin's intent, but it just doesn't work for me and feels rather cheesy. The second is that there's a somewhat obvious answer to the killer's identity, because its one of the three newly introduced characters at the beginning of the story. For a work that deals with such a serious, real-life issue, it might have been wiser to make the killer a complete unknown, and integrate the new characters in another way.
Ultimately the good outweighs the bad, and Batman: Night Cries is a worthwhile self-contained story for your collection.
Incredibly powerful and haunting work..........2004-01-25
More than any other Batman graphic novel, Night Cries deals with a subject that hits home. Whether or not you have experienced or know people who have experienced child abuse, it is not difficult to identify with the characters and be moved by this story. The reason for its power is that it is the most human Batman story I've read. Unlike Arkham Asylum which deals with wacky screwed-up villains, or the Dark Knight Returns which tells of an Batman's action-packed rebellious return, Night Cries speaks of children. It speaks of the effects that abuse has on human souls, the abused or the observers of the abused. Nothing tears the human soul more than a child in any sort of pain, and Night Cries explores these types of pain and the effects of it. Scott Hampton also took much time and care creating the lush and dark paintings in this graphic novel to fit Archie Goodwin's mysteriously unfolding story.
Note: By no means am I suggesting that Dark Knight Returns or Arkham Asylum are not good (in fact I like them more than Night Cries) but Night Cries is definitely far more arresting than either of the aforementioned.
The art is bad, the story is worse.......2002-02-11
The art in Night Cries is cut from the same cloth as Arkham Asylum. If you liked the latter, then there's a good chance that you'll like the former. I personally found the art in both unappealing and uninspired, but to each their own. Night Cries is also drug down by a poor story with too many confusing elements that get further muddled by the poor art.
