Book Description

A Leadership Network Publication

A New Kind of Christian's conversation between a pastor and his daughter's high school science teacher reveals that wisdom for life's most pressing spiritual questions can come from the most unlikely sources. This stirring fable captures a new spirit of Christianity--where personal, daily interaction with God is more important than institutional church structures, where faith is more about a way of life than a system of belief, where being authentically good is more important than being doctrinally "right," and where one's direction is more important than one's present location. Brian McLaren's delightful account offers a wise and wondrous approach for revitalizing Christian spiritual life and Christian congregations.

1 out of 5 stars Sadly Misinformed.......2007-05-26

Brian McLaren is truly a wonder to behold, but not in a good sense. It is remarkable to me that a man like this can espouse such new-age gnosticism and people gobble it up as if it's the newest flavor of ice cream!

When did Christians stop using their heads? When did they stop viewing the Bible as the authoritative Word of God? The situation couldn't be more sad and McLaren, for all of his assumed humility and piety, is sadly misinformed about God, His Word and His redemption.

4 out of 5 stars Faith-stretching.......2007-05-25

This book is about a pastor and an ex-pastor who mentors him in in his soul searching. It probably is best for pastors, who have a deep undertanding of the Bible and can weather through the rough places, but can be enlightening to both serious Christians and those disgruntled folks who think present-day Christianity is worthless, and possibly even dangerous. It is very rough for those who already have their set ideas, learned from Sunday school, on what Christianity is all about. For those who already have enjoyed the mind-stretching work of Marcus Borg and James Mulholland it will be intreging. Some of the book I loved because it validated how I already thought (we tend to value things like that). Other parts, such as a fantasy look at what Heaven and Hell might really be like, were thought provoking, in the manner of C. S. Lewis, and I am still mulling over these parts. The last chapter got a little heavy for me regarding how to set up a postmodern era church. He uses the words "modern" and "postmodern" frequently, one being what were are stuck in and the other being what we need to transition to - to follow Jesus' plan. I don't think he explains these terms enough, and I had to rethink what he said about them every time they came up. As a final criticism, not nearly enough emphasis is given to Islam, Buddism, or the Hindu religion, to be consistent with their importance in a postmodern global world - maybe in the next two books in this trilogy, which I intend to read, it will be further discussed as to how we, as the minority Christians deal, in Jesus' way, with the other faiths. This book, in my opinion, is a first step in the right direction

1 out of 5 stars Who is this?????.......2007-05-17

Is this guy an absolute idiot? I want to see him go through any heart-breaking life crisis with this theology. Jesus is the answer and the only answer! What kind of background does he come out of - something so bigoted and narrow-minded that he needed to make up these adventurous theories to renounce it? What kind of God did he previously think we were serving?? I mean this guy makes me think of someone who has it so good, and so comfortable that now he has the luxury of reworking God. When you get into a hard spot in life, you will find the God of the Bible and His everlasting mercies and lovingkindness to be pretty handy!!! I want anyone to tell me that this intellectual, arrogant, self-indulgent philosophy will save them in their pitch black darkness. I am offended for God at this presumptuous counterfeit to His own revealed Word. Why did God go to the trouble to give us His word, if it wasn't going to be reliable. This book might be helpful to people who have been raised like he was, but otherwise, open your eyes. God loves us! Jesus loves us! He came to save all sinners. That is the message the world needs, who cares about deconstruction, conditionalism, universalism. Where is all that going to be when your soul or that of your loved one is in hell????? If you choose to disbelieve in this final destination, I hope you can be very, very sure! Read the Bible! God is clear! He is well able to reveal himself and His timeless truths to his own creation.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2007-02-24

this is a great book to stimulate the mind and spirit. it's especially good for those of us who grew up in traditional or fundamental christian homes and need to explore a broader spectrum of the faith. you will be challenged and hopefully will grow as a result of reading this book. it is decidedly postmodern in it's content. therefore you will be more open to it if you're birth year was after 1970; however, it's a great read for all those who are willing to look at a larger view of God, relationship and religion.

4 out of 5 stars Try wrapping your mind around it.......2007-02-21

After reading, and highly enjoying, Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller several good friends recommended A New Kind of Christian. I read A New Kind of Christian as a part of a bible study group, and I'm so glad I did. When reading McLaren's revolutionary ideas about the Christian faith and the Bible I found it helpful to have other readers to confer with. At times this book was very hard for me to wrap my mind around, but I hung in there and I'm glad I did. I do recommend this book, but suggest reading with friends, a book club, or bible study group because you may have lots to digest when wrestling with McLaren's ideas about what it means to be "A New Kind of Christian".

5 out of 5 stars Oldies still classics.......2006-05-09

When reading Nora's first books compared to her newest, there is a tremendous difference that some readers my not like. The old stories are shorter, purely romance-driven, often single-point-of-views by young, sheltered virgins--not much like the savvy, worldly, women of the newer books, whose plots are tense, full of twists and turns, unexpected villians and surprising developments.

But if you take Nora's early work in the proper context--that of the mid- to late-eighties romance genre, you see something else--the pure, focused talent of a woman who would become a driving force in the industry--not just in romance novels, but in woman's fiction, suspense, and futuristic novels.

Read the Nora books being reissued--and then read two or three other romance novels published in the same year as Nora's book. See the difference? Non-romance readers may not see it, as the differences are a bit subtle, but they are there. Nora and a handful of other female writers from the same period--many of whom, like Jayne Ann Krentz and contemporaries, still write and recieve almost the same fame as Nora--redefined the romance industry and novel, taking the guidelines established by publishers and male editors about romance and working around, under, or right over top of those rules.

Eventually, they were able to through those guidelines in the trash where they belonged, paving the way for the diverse romance industry we know today. Nora and those like her refused to be ashamed of writing romance, using their own names instead of pen names-virtually a requirement at the time. They made their heroines strong and clever and not to be manipulated by their older, worldlier male suitors. They gave those same males a voice, becoming the first writers to present fully-formed, human male protaganists whose point-of-view came across--hard to imagine your favorite romance written from only the ladies' point-of-view, isn't it? Men, even written ones, cannot be understood unless you can read minds, as we do now in stories told from multiple perspectives. These were the writers that began blending romance and suspense, adding fantasy and the supernatural to their stories. Some took their characters to other worlds (Jayne Ann Krentz as Jayne Castle); some to the future (Nora as JD Robb) and some into the past in a way only Austen and the Brontes every came close to managing (Stephanie Laurens, Mary Jo Putney).

Those of you who love romance, do not read these reissues books as relics, or scorn them as weak predecesors of the suspenseful romance we all love--read them with thanks and appreciation for their place in the development of the female-driven industry that we may not realize we should be grateful for. Enjoy them, look for Nora's phenomenal talent developing as she and her stories test their wings. Love these well-written early stories for what they are--the first lines in a lifelong achievement of storytelling and authorship.

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2006-02-17

Nora Roberts' early work is just not that good...its an enjoyable afternoon read if you pick it up at the library (actually its great beach reading), but I wouldn't pay for it. The plots are typical romance...nothing new or exciting here and unlike her later work the plot isn't in depth or exciting.

2 out of 5 stars A Bit Dissapointing.......2005-08-31

I must say I was dissapointed with those 2 stories. First story is so far from reality (I know, I know, sometimes we want to get away-but not That Far!!!) I couldn't read even half of the 2nd story...It was written very poorly. Sometimes I felt like something just wasn't enough, at times opposite - like it was way too much! Anyway, I wouldn't recomend bying this book...

3 out of 5 stars Nice Blend of Old and New.......2005-08-18

Comprised of two novellas, "Impulse" and "The Best Mistake," this book serves as a showcase of Nora Roberts' talent from the early years to later. "Impulse" stars a likeable young heroine, Rebecca Malone, who impulsively quits her job, sells everything she owns, and goes on vacation til the money runs out. We catch up with her on Corfu, where she meets wealthy magnate Stephen Nicodemus. Stephen romances her, charmed by her enthusiasm for new things, while she frets over giving him the wrong impression of herself, even though she told him no lies. Typical of 80's romances, the heroine quietly longs for a man she thinks is out of her league while he's spellbound by her freshness. It was the 80's when first released, so I guess I can't complain.

It is obvious Nora had really blossomed as a writer, and started making a few of her own rules, by the time she wrote "The Best Mistake." It's the story of beautiful Zoe Fleming, working two dead-end jobs to support her son Keenan. To help make ends meet, Zoe rents out her upstairs apartment to Cooper McKinnon, a sportswriter. Coop quickly gets sucked into Zoe and Keenan's lives and feels his bachelorhood slipping through his fingers, and freaks out. Things really get bad when Zoe shrugs him off for being a jerk, and he comes to his senses. This was a cute, well-written modern family romance with a heart, showcasing Nora's talents in a quick read.

The entire book has merit, simply for showing the progressing talent of a major writer, and it was also a nice, quick read for those times a person wants to enjoy a good story, but doesn't have a lot of time.

3 out of 5 stars Romance when you least expect it.......2005-08-17

As usual the women are strong, competent, intelligent, and beautiful. The romance is the kind to bring a tear to your eye and a wish to you mind.

The first story "Impulse" while enganging and interesting is not very believable but nonetheless a good story. Filled with colorful descriptions and great characters.

"The Best Mistake" is more down to earth. A simple plan to earn more money by renting the houses extra apartment to help a single mother earn enough to cut back on her work hours to be with her son leads to more than she bargained for. I doubt if there is a single mother who doesn't wish a Coop could show up on her doorstep no matter how happy, confident, and competent she was.

If your in the mood for a romance you can't go wrong with these two.

Book Description

What can you accomplish in a weekend, start to finish? Any one of the more than fifty-five exciting projects in Debbie Travis' Weekend Projects, by the star of the TV series The Painted House. Following the inspiring full-color photographs and simple instructions, even the beginning do-it-yourselfer can create beautiful pillows and frames, boxes and screens, and slipcovers -- each in just two days or less.

In transforming a home from plain to personalized, it's the little touches that make the difference. "The furniture and accessories you make or decorate yourself are the most successful," Debbie explains. "It's not just about the money we save . . . it's the experience of creating something by hand." Not only are these projects quick, inexpensive, and easy to make, but they also yield some of the most appealing and useful objects you could own. For example, a plain dresser or shelving unit can be completely restyled with a few hardware store add-ons and a bit of paint. With no-sew Velcro and self-adhesive hemming tape, anyone can hang patterned curtains or create a decorative pillow. A roll of screening and a staple gun turn a frame into a kitchen divider and tool rack in one. In sections that cover tables, screens, frames and mirrors, lighting, storage, fabrics and floorcloths, and garden furniture and accessories, Debbie visits every room of the house. Each project has been photographed to show not only the finished results, but also the step-by-step techniques needed. With so much variety in materials, processes, and end results, Debbie promises over a year of fun weekends, with a beautiful house as the bonus.

Lavishly illustrated with more than 350 full-color photographs, Debbie Travis' Weekend Projects is also the weekend crafter's manual, packed with valuable information, including tips on where to find pieces to make over, a complete listing and explanation of tools and materials needed, and instructions on how to prepare an array of different surfaces.

Whether it is a basic wood frame, a pressed-tin candlestick, or a velvet pillow, these treasures may take just a weekend to make, but they will bring a lifetime
of enjoyment.

3 out of 5 stars Preparation Chapter best part of the book.......2005-12-23

Debbie Travis' books are a mixed bag. Some of them I really like and some are scarce on steps and details. This book falls into the latter category. The best part of the book to me were the two chapters, "Preparing your Project for Decoration" and "The Professional Touch". These chapters cover repairs of pieces, sanding, stripping, glazes and how to tint glazes, plaster, varnishes, stains, etc. and the best way to apply them for a professional finish.

This book covers all kinds of projects, indoor, outdoor, furniture, curtains, floors, screens, slipcovers and more.

Like another reviewer I thought many of the projects were very plain, but the beautiful ones sometimes seemed to leave out steps. Some of the more interesting projects were the:

~ vinegar-grained table (pg 70),
~ crackle varnish clock table (pg 76),
~ classical screen (pg 111),
~ faux leather frame (pg 118)
~ some of the curtains

The most interesting project that immediately caught my eye was a lamp made from an antique silver coffeepot (pg 130). Even though it had a full page photograph, it was not covered at all.

Very disappointing book.

3 out of 5 stars Just not enough.......2005-11-06

I agree with other reviewers that this book has some great projects, some of which I plan to do, and it gave me some very good ideas. The problem for me is too few pictures and, in some cases, incomplete instructions.

For example, on page 70 is a gorgeous vinegar-grained and faux tortoiseshell table. But the instructions are incomplete, explaining and showing just two small sections of the work and parts of the process, and not giving instructions for the remainder of the table. The table has a very nice border that separates the center and the tortoiseshell edge, but the instructions don't even acknowledge its existence.

In several other cases, the pictures with the instructions seem to stop in mid process. It would be much better if the pictures continued through to the finished product.

This book feels as if Ms. Travis tried to jam as many projects into a set number of pages as possible, which gave me the feeling of being hurried while I was looking at the book.

I think she paid too little attention to giving full instructions and providing enough pictures. If expanded to include these things, this would be a five-star book.

1 out of 5 stars Better books on the market than this one........2004-11-01

This book looks good at first glance, but then it falls apart. The nice colored pictures cannot compensate for the poor hints and guidelines in creating the same effects. Also, many of the finished projects were downright ugly.

I expected this book to offer something really fresh but it didn't. I feel majorly ripped off.

4 out of 5 stars Inspirational!!.......2003-06-20

Debbie Travis really breaks down projects that look complicated into easy steps. In looking for info on one project, I immediately became inspired to do several of her projects. They are all easilly adapted to your home and style, and definetly make you want to go for it!!

5 out of 5 stars Great projects!.......2003-04-12

Lots of easy to do projects. Most of the projects can be adapted to suit your own decorating style.

This book has shown me how faith strengthens me and allows the freedom that I have gained in my life through the Lord Jesus Christ. I know I am loved by God.

5 out of 5 stars super boosts your walk with God.......2005-03-21

Reading this book makes me excited about firmly trusting in the Word. God is really using this book to take me to another level. From what I understand from other reviews, all of his books do this! I'm a huge fan now.

I'm in awe of God and the revelation He gave Kenyon. I started reading this book with a hi-liter -- it's so rich with revelation that most pages might as well be completely high-lighted.

This was my first Kenyon book (it's the only one the store had)... I'm going to read all of them.

5 out of 5 stars Kenyons most underrated book!.......2004-05-10

This book is 115 pages of smooth reading. I have several books on faith and I put this book at the top. It truly is outstanding and will take you to another level. It truly gets one to see the difference between believing the bible is true and acting like its true. If you believe you act on God's word, but you feel as though you could be more consistant, then this book is for you. You will want to read this many times. I believe this is an overlooked book and truly one of Kenyon's finest. This book will be an amazing blessing!

    5 out of 5 stars enlightening,deep,yet easy to understand.......1999-11-19

This book shows you, scripturally, what real faith is. It breaks down the difference between hope and faith. It helps one to see that Gods Word is reality no matter what we may "think" or "feel" in the natural while still being "realistic." This book is a must read for anybody wanting a "deeper" walk with God. Read it expecting the Holy Spirit to reveal truths to you that are easily applicable to any life situation getting you results because of the truth of Gods Word.

United by an urgent goal but for separate reasons, an inconceivable team is forged. 4 out of 5 stars A good start.......2006-06-22

I was terrified of starting this book because the author, Greg Cox. In Tales of the Slayer volume 2, his big monster, is an overly massive vampire squid???! Vampire Squid? You're kidding me, right? Luckily this book wasn't so crazy. Most parts were pretty realistic, except for the end. I enjoyed it, but the most of the other books in the series. Read it if you want, but not 100% neccesary unless you're a fan.

    3 out of 5 stars Poor research.......2006-05-21

Nice enough story, but if you include German in your book, please please do NOT run it through some online translator but get someone who actually speaks it.
page 190 : "Töten Sie sie! Lassen Sie sie entkommen nicht!" should be: "nicht entkommen!".
page 195 : "Verdammen sie!" Is just the literal translation of Damn you. "Verdammt noch mal" might be what's used in stead but that's more of a general curse.

3 out of 5 stars Too Long Winded.......2005-06-24

A top secret prototype plane has been stolen. It just took off and kept flying. Recovering it is the top priority of the CIA.

APO has received a lead from an unlikely source. Maya Rao is an Indian assassin who has crossed paths with Sydney in the past. But she steps forward with a lead and a request to work together with Sydney. Naturally, Sydney doesn't like the idea, but what else can she do? Even more disturbing are Maya's constant comments that she and Sydney are more alike then different. Can this be true? What are Maya's real motives? Will they track down the plane?

This book started out well, but died under the weight of its story. It felt entirely too long. Maybe it's just that this is longer then the prequels were, but I was ready for it to be done long before the climax came. I was also distracted by the constant references to events from the show. While a few are good, it got to the point of excess very quickly. The climax did stretch believability; I didn't have as big a problem with it as I might have, probably because I was ready for the book to be over.

While never classic literature, I have enjoyed the Alias tie in novels in the past. Hopefully this is an exception and the next will be back to the enjoyable quick reads that the others have been.

5 out of 5 stars Alias book review........2005-06-14

I liked this book. It had a lot of action and was not hard to follow. Some parts in the book where a little out there. I also like how it follows the tv series. I won't tell you what happened because I have read some of there and had the ending spoiled so I won't do that. I would read this book if given the chance.

    Book Description

5 out of 5 stars A taste of living water in the drought of modern-day Christianity.......2007-01-28

My hairdresser recommended this book to me. The relationship one has with one's hairdresser means that you often end up talking about quite deep things and my hairdresser and I, both Christians, have done a lot of talking over the last ten years. He was obviously pretty much in tune with where my thoughts were as he told me about a book I had to read, told me its name and I went out and bought it.

"A New Kind Of Christian" is that book. And my hairdresser was right - I really did have to read this book. Why? Mainly because it has given me fresh hope in Christianity in the 21st century when I had pretty much given up hope. Look around you at the people you work with, you travel on the train with. If you stopped and asked one of them randomly to describe what they thought a Christian was they would probably say something like "a nice person, a good person, but also very judgemental, bigoted, brainwashed and a hyprocrite." And I would agree with them. Most Christians I know - well, almost all of them - are really nice people. They can be very hospitable, wonderfully generous, they give up no end of time and money to the Church, they want to invite non-Christians to as many events as possible to convert them (for their own good, of course) and they want to live a faithful, good, nuclear family kind of life. However, this worldview seems so out of touch with the real world - not because any of those things are necessarily wrong (most of them are very good) but because it misses out on a lot of what else is going on in today's culture. Issues of sexuality, scientific study, congruence with the postmodern society that we live in - these are issues that the secular world has a position on and the church is usually far behind. Christians often seem to have an inability to think for themselves but only seem able to parrot the latest words of the pastor/leader, no matter how unloving it may seem to the modern gay person (for example), let alone often requiring belief in things that really shouldn't matter to be a `real' Christian (such as 7-day creation). Young people are often turned off because they feel the church isn't really connecting with them; others are so `into' the church that they don't actually have any real understanding of life outside it, of culture outside it (yes, there is some!) and of issues that affect people deeply every day that they can blithely categorise as `wrong' or `sin'.

Brian MacLaren's book meets these issues head on. Rather than writing a treatise or theology of what he believes he instead presents his views in the form of a conversation between two people - a Pastor who is beginning to wonder if he should become a school teacher instead as he can no longer preach with the certainty that he used to, and Neo, a school teacher who used to be a pastor. Within the conversations between these two men we read a sermon by Neo, hear of conversations between the pastor and his wife and get a little bit of an idea what it might be like for that pastor who is worried about his calling. And every page of this book just drips wisdom - I found myself constantly thinking "yes, that's exactly it!" and was generally able to only read a couple of chapters at a time as there was so much in them I had to go away and think about what I had read before consuming more.

Brian MacLaren puts his case for a new kind of Christian very strongly. The first half of the book is setting the groundwork to his idea - that the Church is "modern" but the world is "postmodern". So much of what the church does we think is vital to Christianity and yet it's far more of a response to the world we have lived in since mediaeval times. The church needs to respond to the way that the world has moved on in terms of communication, global perspectives on individuals' lives and a right understanding of what Jesus started in his church. The second part of the book looks more at what "a new kind of Christian" would be like - how they might evangelise, how they might live there lives (with a strong focus on generosity of financial giving) and how they might live lives as Jesus commanded rather than turning into the narrow pharisaism of so many Christians.

I was really struck by a small thing in the middle of this book, where Neo quotes from 1 John 1 about heaven, referring to Jesus and saying "We shall be like him". I had been going around for weeks saying to people "if being a Christian means being like these people" - referring to Christians in the media, Christians I have come across in my daily life, who spout bigoted and unloving opinions at the drop of a hat and come across as very judgemental - "I would rather not be a Christian". I found it shockingly easy to say those words because I have become so horrified by the state of Christianity that I have experienced in the UK and US. And yet I was reminded that in heaven we would be like Jesus and I want that, very much. I am very happy to be like Jesus, he is the ultimate model of what a Christian should be like, and this huge difference between thinking about being like Jesus and being like other Christians has highlighted for me where Christianity has gone wrong for me - not in the essence of the faith but in its expression by people around me. It doesn't have to be like that, and Brian MacLaren's book shows a way in which we might become more like Jesus in today's postmodern world - this is a brilliant book and I strongly recommend it to anyone who despairs of modern-day Christianity, who fears they may be losing their faith, who finds it difficult to reconcile their God-given intelligence with the strange stuff being fed to them from the pulpit. It gives hope again to the message of Jesus, as relevant today as it has always been.

This book shows me the power and authority that Christ Jesus gave to me, and this has also made me stronger and more trusting in the Lord.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful and helpful book........2002-02-16

This book really did help give me confidence in the message of Righteousness by Faith instead of by my own work, and helped to stand on it more. The key term he introduces to describe the problem of man is "Sin Conciousness." And He then proceeds to show how God dealt with this in Christ. One of the really great thing about this book is that it contains a lot of Scripture used properly. This makes the book worth reading again to get the full impact. I agree with the previous reviers that this is a very powerful and important book and message. A few notes:

    1. This book is short (80p)
    2. While there was a lot of great truth, it seemed a little unstructured to me.
    3. The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because I think there are a few short places where this author steps into dangerous territory with regard to Sonship. For example, he says that "Jesus is the 'sample' son" Now in context I don't think he meant anything unorthodox, but this kind of language tends to suggest that we are little Jesus' and is exactly what you will find in the Sonship cults that followed the Latter Rain.

Please don't get me wrong. This is a wonderful book, and I hope you buy it, just please be careful of the few places in the book where the true message of our Sonship in Christ is pushed perhaps a little far.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the most important message ever offered.......2000-01-18

This book is a powerful revelation that when recieved will enable a person to stand upright in christ and know who he/she is. Every Christian should read this book...

5 out of 5 stars a stunning masterpiece, liberating and exciting!.......1999-11-19

This book puts into perspective how God sees man. We are in union with God right now. We mustn't wait until Heaven. Such deep Bible truths made perfectly simple and easy to understand. There is no need to walk in shame or defeat when victory is ours through Jesus Christ. This book taught me how to rise to Gods level rather than try to fit God into my level. Every christian MUST read this book. Next to the Bible, this might be the most powerful book I have read. See for yourself

Have you ever had a favorite sister and lost her? If you haven't and want to know the feeling, then read this book Two' A Crowd. This story was about two twin sisters who get in a fight. The protagonists are Mary-Kate and Ashley Burke. Ashley is really nice in the beginning then turns mean.
Ashley gets a new friend named Nicole.
Her sister, Mary-Kate, thinks that Ashley is spending too much
time with Nicole. The main setting is at their school and at home. Mary - Kate calls up Nicole and dresses up like her sister then she tells Nicole that she doesn't want to be friends anymore. Mary-Kate and Ashley were mad at each other for a long time. At the end they became best friends again. Then they started hanging out more. Ashley was like a bear ready to attack when she found out what Mary Kate did. My favorite part was when they got into a huge fight. My other favorite part was when the moved into different rooms.
If you want to find out what happens next, I encourage you to read this book. This book is a fantastic book. This will teach you never too get mad at your sister for a stupid reason. This book is a lesson to all the twin brothers or twin sisters.
