Great, great book on Colorado.......2005-06-09

I love this book. I read it the first time in 3rd grade for our Colorado history unit and I'm on my fourth copy, having worn all the others to bits (still have them, but need a presentable copy on the shelves). I've used them as a camp counselor and I'm buying copies for each of the families coming to Colorado for my wedding so they have something to read as they explore our great state.

This is the best of King.......2007-05-31

I love all of King's books and always get so involved in the stories and characters that I think about them long after I finish reading them, like they are real people. Jim Gardener, Bobby and especially her sister will stay on my mind for a long time. I'm not even sure why, but these people seemed more real than the ones I know in real life. The story enthralled me, even though I am not into anything si-fi or relating to outer space. But that is King for you. He will draw you in, no matter what the subject matter, and make you a believer. This is his best book, and I have read all his books. It doesn't get any better than this.

I have been reading Stephen King novels consistently for several years. Normally I am able to put up with disappointing endings that seem to be common in his works but this story was disappointing from page 1. I was attracted by the alien theme of the story because I was terrified by the movie "Fire in the Sky." Several times while reading Tommyknockers I laughed out loud because the plot got to be so ridiculous/corny. It would have made a better short story rather than a 700+ page novel.

Wow, the wild differences in reviewers here is crazy! Personally, how anyone could not appreciate this book as one of his BEST is beyond me. This book creeped me out from the beginning and never let up. If he was on drugs at the time then maybe he should get back on them! Stephen King is a writer who has always been able to create atmosphere in his books but in this one he outdoes himself. I was dragged into this book and didn't come out until the writer spat me out at the end and boy was I frustrated! Why? Because I didn't want it to end. In my opinion, this is his best work ever. Must reading for all horror fans.

The residents of Haven, ME undergo startling changes when a centuries old space ship is accidentally discovered in the woods. The residents begin a frightening transformation immediately upon Bobbi Anderson's excavation of the alien machine that releases its noxious powers into the air of Haven.

As usual, King masterfully takes a very clichéd theme (flying saucer lands in an obscure town) and makes it a little different than what you have read or seen before. However, in this book, King's characters are less believable and lack the human depth he is usually so good at. The hero of the story, a drunken suicidal friend of Bobbi's, is just not all that believable. There are also many unexplored elements that are introduced and remain unresolved.

This is a King story however and he does includes many stories within the story that are great. Small short stories about characters and action that will make you laugh and be unnerved.

Slow to start, a lot of irrelevant action, but a good ending and great stories along the way. Not his best, but enjoyable for King fans none the less.

I have to say that I am a fan of Stephen King. After all I have read just about everything he has published over the years. Often his prose is easy to slip into. But here... here... King's plot is a mess. I think that this might have been created right at the end of his cocain period and his mind was like a TV that wont settle on any particular channel. At times the introspection of the characters is mesmerising, and you can find yourself caught up in 70 page jaunts dealing with arcane issues like poetry festivals or walks in the woods.

About half way through this massive book I started to feel that their was not really going to be a cohesive plot to this story. That this was going to be ramblings that were not pasted together. The characters were not very likeable, and it was hard to sympathise with them as they spiral downwards over the course of the book. King starts in on a wholey new story here and then proceeds to tie together three 'novelas'. Slowly the spaceship that is uncovered in the opening pages starts to take a grip over the entire small neighboring New England town.

I'm a pretty hard critic of King's even though I have spent so much time with his books. In my opinion, nine times out of ten he manages to miss the mark in some crucial aspect. Prior to reading Tommyknockers, the one book, or series, that was most trying for me to get through was the Gunslinger saga. I think that Tommyknockers was both better and far worse than this series. If I were you, and had yet to read much of Kings work, I would steer away from this one and try a classic like Salem's Lot or a few of his short stories 'Skelleton Crew'. King is probably best at the short story and if you have yet to read many of them, you are in for a treat.
