Come Out Tonight.......2007-06-03
Richard Laymon is a legend in the horror genre. His work is brutal, violent and, at times, almost pornographic. His novel Come Out Tonight is no exception. It is the story of Sherry Gates, and her scrape with a demented underage serial killer.
The novel opens with Sherry sending her boyfriend, Duane, to a local convenience store for condoms. When he doesn't return she gets nervous and goes out looking for him. She finds Duane's van, but she doesn't find him. This sparks an all night search, a chance meeting with a helpful older man and an encounter with two charmingly innocent teenage boys. And, somewhere in between, she is kidnapped, beaten, and raped. The plot takes a number of surprising turns. And in the end, it becomes difficult to tell the good guys from the bad.
Come Out Tonight opens with a bang. The prose is quick and sharp. The story is interesting and the characters are fun, even if a little familiar to anyone who has read Richard Laymon's work. It is dialogue rich, and a very quick read. Unfortunately, like many of Laymon's novels, it lacks a certain amount of believability. It is difficult to ignore the glaring fact that all of this pain, fear and downright horror could be escaped by simply picking up the telephone and dialing three numbers: 9-1-1.
While the characters motives are suspect, and not adequately explained, this is still a fun novel. The reader just has to ignore the obvious holes in the plot, and the fact that Laymon's characters never make the right decision. They always run down the wrong corridor, or choose the wrong road, or alley. They are innocent, or ignorant, of their true situations, and they always think they can handle it. They never, when it is available, ask for help. And, of course, their actions always lead them into deeper, darker and more frightening places.
Fortunately it is not as difficult to ignore the weaknesses, as it would seem. Richard Laymon can weave a great story and make you want to ignore the blemishes. He does it with a sturdy understanding of the tale and its impact on the audience. He tightens the suspense like a noose around the reader's neck. He makes you want to believe the tale. It is very much like a campfire story. You know it is not real, and could never be real, but somehow it still enthralls and even scares you just a little.
The action is violent and stuffed with sex--most of the novel is filled with sexual torture, but somehow, as written by Laymon it is less disturbing and nasty than it could be; perhaps because it is seemingly written through the eyes of a thirteen year-old boy. It is more fantasy than reality. And that fantasy is somehow innocent and almost coy.
Come Out Tonight is not for everyone. If you are offended by violence, sex, or just about anything else, avoid this book. If, on the other hand, you like a little heady action and quick-shot violence you just might like this offering. Be careful and don't take it too seriously, or we all may have to question both our sensibilities and our sanity.

Gravetapping: a thing for books
The Pages Might as well be Made of Fire.......2007-04-03
Warning: If you pick this book up, you will not put it down.
And you'll probably read it in the time it takes to watch a movie.
I'm seriously not kidding.
Personally, I've never read a book so fast in my entire life.
(Dr. Seuss included)
I even brought it to the bathroom with me,
Couldn't even stop for that.
From begining to end this book just does not let up.
Richard Laymon knows you read in your spare time,
He knows that when you're settled in with a book, You want to relax.
He's not going to work your brain muscles;
But you better believe, you hearts going to be doing aerobics.
Sherry (the hot substitute-teacher)
and her boyfriend (God, I can't even remember his name now)
were about to consumate their relationship, when
they discovered their lack of protection. (not flak-jackets, mind you)
Sherry being the responsible one sends her boyfriend out to pick some up.
When he doesn't come back, she starts to worry.
Worries so much, that she goes out looking for him.
Up at the conveinence store,
Sherry spots his van parked along side the building.
She's certain it's his.
But where is he?
She goes in search of him.
Along the way, she enlists help from a young man (one of her students)
Toby Bones.
A name you will not soon forget.
What ensues is about 400 pages of chase scenes,
and really bad decisions on Sherry's part.
I warn you:
(Her idiocy will frustrate you)
and;
(You will scream into the pages on more than 1 occasion)
But all the while you'll be enjoying yourself.
As it goes for any Laymon novel,
lots of nudity,
loads of depravity,
severed limbs,
violent stabbings,
the consumption of flesh,
a power drill murder (my personal fave)
and a final scene that will leave your head spinning.
Laymon is the King of the American Extreme.
So sit back, and enjoy the bloody ride.
Unless of course you take heart medication.
In which case, Enjoy your final book.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Condoms aren't nearly as important as breathing.
Oh, how I wish I could get the time I wasted reading this trash back.......2006-11-14
This book is ridiculous. Not one believable character or situation. I wasn't expecting great literature by any means but the entire premise of the story rests on a character behaving unbelievably stupid and unrealistically. I can overlook a lot while reading horror fiction, but there was just nothing in this book that was remotely believeable. Laymon is actually a half-decent writer - easy prose, and he keeps the suspense going to keep you reading. I've read a few of his books and enjoyed them. But his characters tend to behave stupidly and seem to have been created by a 12-year-old boy's dirty adolescent fantasies. Teenage boys looking to get off on sex and gore will probably love this - everyone else should avoid it like the horrendous trash it is. 0 stars
Stunningly bad in every way.......2006-10-08
This is my first Laymon book, and also my last.
Don't get me wrong - I enjoy gruesome and horrifying stories as long as the stories make some sense. Without any logic or common sense, though, as well as crappy adolescent-style writing, this is one for the trash pile. Or you could use the pages for toilet paper if you become desperate.
If you'd like to read a story that seems like it was written by a 12-year old boy, by all means buy this book. Otherwise, don't waste your money - not even a penny for a used copy.
Guilty Pleasure.......2006-09-11
Although this is one of Laymon's weaker efforts, it still has plenty of his trademark goodies -- violence, suspense, gore, and sex. The big problem with this one is the believability factor. Characters react in ways that seem ridiculous, but it's a fun read, nonetheless. For new readers of Richard Laymon, I'd first try "In The Dark", "Island", or "The Travelling Vampire Show".

It's Susan!!!.......2002-04-17
I got this because it's got Susan Seddon Boulet as the illustrator. That's all. And that's more than worth it. The pictures here are so beautiful...if you have the Retrospective book, then you've only seen a very small portion of the visual feast that is Buffalo Gals.
The story...the story is an odd one. Fan's of Charles de Lint will like this book, for the characters are very similar to his "animal people." The idea of a female Coyote demi-diety is great! However, the ending was a little rushed and contrived. I actually blinked and re-read the last few paragraphs to make sure that I hadn't missed something.
wow.......2000-08-21
What a powerful combination of work. I haven't seen this particular version of Buffalo Gals (have a weathered paperback copy from a used book shop), but it is such a wonderful collection of stories. I especially like the story for which the book is named. And Boulet was a phenomenal visual artist, her spirit definitely lives on in her work. I can just imagine what a nice gift a copy of this book would be for someone. To pair the art of these wonder-women was a real act of genius.
Dynanic paintings, wonderful writting.......2000-02-13
This is a marvellous collaboration between a wonderful writer and superb artist. Le Guin's captivating story is brought to life by Boulet's dynamic paintings.
It is a story of the relationships among humans, animals and nature as the old ones, the animals, struggle to adapt and survive amid human expansion into their realm.
This subject is a natural for Boulet, whose work has always focused on these themes. There are 22 paintings of animals given human characteristics so vivid you feel you can see into their souls.
This is a wonderful book for an older child. It subtly teaches important lessons in life with a very entertaining story. Any fan Boulet's work will find it a welcome addition to their library.
A modern fairy tale for adults.......1999-09-21
At first glance I thought that Buffalo Gals, Won't You Come Out Tonight was a children's book, but flipping through I was soon corrected. Though set in a fairy tale format, it is definitely a story for adults (and older children as well) and is a beautifully written Ursula LeGuin classic. I read the book in one go, not a hard feat considering it's a short read, but every line and page is masterfully done and I could have hardly put the book down if I had wanted to - the story pulls you in and fascinates. The illustrations are also very inspired and go perfectly hand-in-hand with the story - a wonderfully synergistic combination. A must read for every Ursula LeGuin fan.
