Jerry Baker's Old Time Gardening Wisdom.......2006-08-07
I have been looking for this book forever.....At least 12 years ago, when I became my mother's caregiver, the only thing that we
could pass time away together in the summer was gardening. I
watched every PBS show Mr.Baker appeared, wrote down everything
he advised and used it in the garden. Our garden was beautiful and MOM was in her wheel chair giving the instructions while I worked. When the ingredients called for beer, we mixed as called by his recipe, and (smile)drank the rest. Tobacco, fels naptha soap, all of it we tried out, all of it worked, and she and I had wonderful times before she passed.
Thanks Jerry Baker
P.S. The garden is still the best in the neighborhood. I now live in the Bahamas 7 months of the year, so I will be trying out exotic flowers with instructions from the book.
Keep your garden healthy.......2005-07-24
This book contains a lot of information that helps to keep your lawn and garden healthy. Most problems can be solved by using formulas contained in this book rather than comercial products that are expensive and confusing.
Fun to Read, Great Resource, Reap the Rewards.......2002-03-01
Have you ever wondered how gardeners of the past produced such magnificent greenery without the big name chemical companies?
Easy, old-fashioned remedies, many of which you have right in your kitchen. Grandma Putt taught Jerry Baker her wonderful methods, then he wrote this book to share them with all of us.
I have always preferred the natural ways, especially now that I live surrounded by farm land that is being destroyed by chemicals to control pests while killing the good pests and soil too. Why damage mother nature when Jerry Baker tells us how to without environmental consequences?
There is a fabulous section on growing and storing herbs, as well as veggie's ( my favorite as a vegetarian!), and growing a lush thriving lawn. We're talking beautiful Green grass, the kind you want to walk on barefoot!
Reap the rewards of the millions who have watched Baker on TV, on the radio and in his dozens of books. You might want to keep this book with your cookbooks- just grab it, mix up an easy potion and be the envy of all the green thumbers.
This would be an excellent gift for yourself or a fellow gardener.

This little gem is so full of useful information.......2006-07-12
This little gem is so full of useful information it puts the other books I have on lavender to shame. Not only does it discuss the many varieties of lavender and their history and growing wants/needs. But one learns how to propagate, trim and use the various lavenders be it in bath items or medicinally, cooking or as gifts. I grow lavender and make various things from the plants but really want to try making the 'Net sachets' shown on page 24 which are gorgeous!
Bravo.......2005-09-06
This summer I planted 80 lavender plants in honor of my mom who recently passed away. This book has been a major part of the success my garden has achieved, with 2 harvestings of lavender to date. An excellent resource and inspiration for how to grow and use lavender

Book Description
Japanese gardens have long been revered for their impeccable design, detail and composition, properties which elevate them from being mere gardens to peaceful havens of serenity and sacredness. Now the ancient Japanese Sakuteiki ("Notes on Garden Design")-the quintessential volume on Japanese garden design-is available for English-speaking readers, alongside gorgeous color photographs of Japan's most famous gardens. Infinite Spaces also includes practical advice and philosophical insights on building and maintaining water features such as miniature ponds and waterways, placing stones for excluding evil spirits and inviting the protection of benevolent deities, and much more. Today's gardeners can gather knowledge, specific design techniques, and inspiration to create magnificent garden sanctuaries in their own backyards.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Book.......2001-10-03
If your one of those people that can learn from basic truths and visual stimulous that book is great. Its a simple book with translations from the "bible" of Japanese gardening. And photos to show you examples.
Great photos but very little Sakuteiki.......2001-02-12
This is a better than average coffee-table book about Japanese Gardens. The photos are for the most part excellent (a few are too dark). Many of the gardens shown are located outside of the Kyoto area and have seldom if ever been shown in other such (English language) books on this subject; this is a nice touch because it means that there is little overlap between this book and others. I had high hopes that the book would include a substantial (if not complete) translation of the Sakuteiki but despite the introduction which implies that this might be the case, it is not true. I would guess that less than 25% of the text of Sakuteiki is included, and the authors have rearranged the material into thematic sections to fit their own taste. This is a terrible pity becuase the 11th century gardening manual known by the name "Sakuteiki" is a very important point of reference in understanding the historical developement of Japanese gardens - sections from it are quoted by almost every book written on the subject, yet there is no generally available English translation of it. The 1976 translation by Shigemaru Shimoyama (publ. by Town & City Planners,Inc. Tokyo) was printed in a tiny edition of only 300 copies so the only way to read it is by borrowing a copy thru the academic inter-library loan program at your local public library. The way the authors of this book have rearranged the text into disjointed quotations (with widely varying typographic style & presentation) really does not do justice to the orginal material and is in considerable danger of reinforcing the old western stereotype of "pearls of wisdom from the inscrutable orient". I would suggest that you buy this book for the pictures alone and not pay too much attention to the text as currently presented. If the book is popular enough to merit a 2nd edition I hope the authors will reconsider the current format.
Incredible photography!.......2000-10-17
The photos are so luscious--I can't think of a more appropriate term--that it's as if you're in these gardens. I believe all of the photos are of the ancient gardens in Kyoto, and if not, they're definately all from Japan. This book is truly one that was inspired by the Sakuteki, not an illustrated edition of the Sakuteki. You'll want it for dreamy page turning, not as an instruction book for your own gardens.

RUBY LEE THE BUMBLEBEE.......2005-08-28
is a book of discovery. For a child, it holds the delights of an afternoon in Mrs. Wagner's garden of flowers and the small creatures that dwell in a place of nature. A young girl Ashley shares her pleasure with her friend and a wise bumblebee named Ruby Lee who, much to Ashley's surprise, talks to her. Mrs. Wagner asks Ashley to help her by potting some flowers for her patio, but Ashley is afraid she will do it wrong. Left with her uncertainties, Ruby Lee enters her world and convinces her "Of course you can pot those flowers for Mrs. Wagner. You are a talented and bright young lady." Taking Ruby Lee's advice, Ashley finishes the job and realizes how good it feels to know "She had done it!". When Mrs. Wagner returns to the patio, she is very pleased with Ashley's efforts and tells her that by believing in herself, she can do anything
Author Dawn Matheson has written a stunning children's book with illustrations by Pamela Barcita that offer surprises on every page. Its message is gently but simply told. A glossary defines in children's language, any words that might not be in their vocabulary. Page numbers for a parent's easy reference lists Ruby Lee's bits of wisdom. This book is meant for a parent to read aloud to a child, pointing out the many details of each illustration or for a child to browse through, enjoying not only the busy pictures, but the warm story of a little girl and a wise bumblebee. Patricia Linder, author: Row, Row,Row Your Boat and The Lady and the Tiger.
Must Have Picture Book.......2005-06-14
Many people dismiss the humble bumble bee without considering its remarkable accomplishment: its ability to fly despite having bodies too big for their wings! Wisely, Ashley listened to Ruby Lee, the very wise bumble bee as she faced a task she thought was daunting.
When Mrs. Wagner asked Ashley to plant flowers, Ashley was afraid her efforts would not be good enough. Then she heard Ruby Lee whispering to her from the butterfly bush. Ruby Lee told Ashley to `bee-lieve' in herself and she could accomplish anything. Following Ruby Lee's example, Ashley courageous faced her challenge-and succeeded.
Ruby Lee's heartwarming wisdom is confidence and self-esteem building for all children. The beautiful and expressive language is complimented by fantastic illustrations that take the reader directly into Mrs. Wagner's wonderful garden.
Those who enjoyed "Ruby Lee" might also enjoy "Families are Forever", another picture book that empowers young children as they navigate their unique place in the world. Young Rain learns the true meaning of family in wonderful book about celebrating and respecting all people and families. Books like "Families are Forever" and Ruby Lee celebrate what it is to be human and how we can change the world-if we reach out and grasp opportunities.
Learning through Nature!.......2005-05-23
What a wonderful gift! Dawn Matheson and Pamela Barcita have presented a beautiful treatise on the gaining of confidence. Mrs. Wagner's garden is the perfect place to learn the ways of nature, through the gifts of a loving God.
How many times in our ordinary lives have we felt we were a bumble bee? Given a task much greater than we; for we have wings far too small for our body! This book shows the possibilities for all of us; have faith and soon confidence will follow.
I highly recommend this book for the quality of its production and the beauty of its message. Dawn Matheson's story and Pamela Barcita's illustrations hold the readers attention, making each page a delight.
Readers, who enjoy Ruby Lee, may also enjoy "The Ballad of Blue Eagle." An adventure story about the animals living in Peaceful Valley and how they are protected by Blue Eagle!
Fun Book With Great Message For Kids.......2005-04-07
I work in a children's library and am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Ruby Lee has beautiful illustrations and a story line that keeps the children's attention as well as inspires them to "believe in themselves". It is a wonderful spring board for discussion in believing in yourself and telling yourself "you can do it!" I have always liked fun books that also give a message children can relate to, and this is one of them.

Really helped us out with our new place.......2004-04-17
We recently bought a small farm and orchard and were simply overwhelmed about what to do with the fruit trees. Fortunately for us, the local feed store was selling this great little book. It covers the essentials for successful grafting and budding, includes the info needed so that the proper tools are acquired and/or used, when to do the different types of grafting and budding, as well as the definitions of the various types of grafting.
A Ripoff for Orchardists.......2003-10-04
This book is a 32-page flimsy pamphlet of the kind that your local Agricultural Extension Service often gives away for free.
There is a paucity of information, no pictures, poor hand-drawn graphics, no mention of anything of value to southern farmers. NO mention of air-layering, and NO compatibility tables for different types of fruit. Egad.

Some really great advise and helpful information.......2006-07-12
Love the Storey Country Wisdom Bulletins. These are great because they are inexpensive and they offer basic useable information that most people can use. This bulletin on row covers and mulches is a time saver in so many ways. First the various methods of extending the garden season is something those who live in short growing season areas or where fall can bring a surprise cold snap will appreciate. And so many inexpensive ways to keep the cold at bay from seedling and plants. How many people ever thought to lay a piece of lattice on cement blocks as a shade cover for things like lettuce?
Then there are the easy to make, inexpensive row covers that are like mini green houses. And the floating mess covers that keep harmful pests out of tomatoes, cabbage etc crops, since they cannot get thru the mesh.
