Book Description
A household icon of the environmental movement, Aldo Leopold (1887-1948) may be the most quoted conservationist in history. A Sand County Almanac has sold millions of copies and his lyrical writings are venerated for their perceptions about land and how people might live in concert with the whole community of life.
But who is the man behind the words? How did he arrive at his profound and poetic insights, inspiring generations of environmentalists? Building on past scholarship and a fresh study of Leopold's unpublished archival materials, Julianne Lutz Newton retraces the intellectual journey that generated such passion and intelligence.
Aldo Leopold's Odyssey illuminates his lifelong quest for answers to a fundamental issue: how can people live prosperously on the land and keep it healthy, too? Leopold's journey took him from Iowa to Yale to the Southwest to Wisconsin, with fascinating stops along the way to probe the causes of early land settlement failures, contribute to the emerging science of ecology, and craft a new vision for land use.
More than a biography, this articulate volume is a guide to one man's intellectual growth, and an inspirational resource for anyone pondering the relationships between people and the land.
Customer Reviews:
A surprising, penetrating, lyrical study.......2006-11-06
Readers who think they know Leopold, whether from his classic A Sand County Almanac or from earlier writings about him, are in for a real surprise. We see here, far better than ever before, the science underlying Leopold's conservation thought; he was at the forefront of ecology, not merely a consumer of it. Even more, we see how Leopold moved step by step to the (for him) painful realization that true conservation was not possible without significant cultural change, which in turn required committed conservationists to step up and challenge dominant values and institutions. Newton shows clearly that it was Leopold's idea of land health, not his land ethic, that stood at the center of his mature conservation thought. She shows how land health, once carefully crafted, transformed his thinking on nearly every aspect of conservation. And she explains vividly-- far better than any other scholar--the precise meanings that Leopold attached to his famous ethical admonition to preserve the land's "integrity, stability, and beauty." Why did Leopold resist the federal conservation programs of the New Deal Era? How did he redefine wilderness over the final decade of his life and reshape his chief reasons for protecting it? What did he view as the main goals of wildlife management, and why did he turn against many basic assumptions in his classic book Game Management? What kind of startlingly new ecology text did he have in works when he died? These and other questions are answered for the first time, in this major work that is brimming with new information and new interpretations. The most sobering realization one has, though, upon finishing this splendid book, is that today's conservation cause might cite Leopold often but hardly at all understands who he was and what he thought. This is not just the best book we have on Leopold, it might well be the best book we've had on any conservation intellect.

Book Description
Since the very first issue of Country Living Gardener, writer, artist and naturalist Sharon Lovejoy has created the award-winning “Heart’s Ease” column for the magazine. Through this collection of delightful essays and beautiful illustrations, she shares with her readers the boundless joys of a country garden. Lovejoy has chosen to focus on animal life in the garden, including hummingbirds, caterpillars, and dragonflies, but her informative and witty prose also covers traditional plant care. The very titles of her sketches convey pleasure in the vibrant country landscape and the life that teems within it: “The Bumble Bee Rumba,” “Faeries in the Fuschias (sphinx moths),” “Holiday Feasts for the Birds and the Beasts,” and “Conversations with Sunflowers.” This compilation truly is—to borrow another of her titles—“Something to Crow About.”

Customer Reviews:
Magnificent man, fine book.......2003-07-24
John Muir is one of the greatest and least appreciated men of the paste 150 years. His fierce determination to preserve the wilderness was a gift to us all. This book does him justice in all ways. Not only is it beautifully written and crafted, the author's empathy and understanding of Muir is evident throughout. Naturally there is an emphasis on Muir's tremendous conservationist efforts, but I was pleased to see material on his early years in Scotland and the emigration to America. Ehrlich also discusses in some detail Muir's loss or sight and his spontaneous restoration of sight. An incredible story in itself.
Most of the book is devoted to Muir's tireless environmental work in California. His (ultimately futile) battle to save Hetch Hetchy is described in painful detail. His triumphs are also chronicled, including his epic hiking adventures, trail forging and wilderness activism. This is a first-rate biography of an outstanding human being, and hero to envioronmentalists everywhere.
Provides vision and hope........2003-07-06
An elegant and beautiful book. It was both visionary and poetic, like Muir, and offers us a fine, new appreciation of the man and his message in this time of political and environmental degradation. Stunning photographs.
What a nature lover!.......2002-09-04
This is an excellent book about the life of one of our greatest conservationists. If you have enjoyed Muir's books, I highly advise learning about his incredible life journey with this great biography.

Book Description
This reprint of the third book in Nichols's Allways trilogy contains a new foreword by Bryan Connon, Beverley Nichols's biographer. Set in the English countryside, the hilarious memoir is as much about the author's love for plants as it is about the village in which he lived. The depictions of flowers and ornamentals - "A single one of those gloxinias would be an event in Allways ... I should give a party for it" - are both inspiring and unforgettable. This is the voice of one whose chief endowment is an appreciation for plants and the landscape, including a keen understanding of the importance gardens play in an increasingly modern world.

VILLAGE IN A VALLEY.......2007-03-13
I was a bit disappointed in this book - Beverley seems to have not been as interested in his subject as he was in the other 2 books of this trilogy, and he became quite morbid in the last section. Perhaps he was in a hurry to get the book finished, or wasn't well at the time.

Book Description
During John Muir's extraordinary life as a conservationist, he traveled through most of the American wilderness alone and on foot, without a gun or a sleeping bag. In 1903, while on a three-day camping trip with President Theodore Roosevelt, he convinced the president of the importance of a national conservation program, and he is given major credit for saving the Grand Canyon and Arizona's Petrified Forest. Muir's writing, based on journals he kept throughout his life, gives our generation a picture of an America still wild and unsettled only one hundred years ago. Edwin Way Teale has collected here the best of Muir's writing, selected from all of his major works, including MY FIRST SUMMER IN THE SIERRA and TRAVELS IN ALASKA. THE WILDERNESS WORLD OF JOHN MUIR provides "reading that is often magnificent, thrilling, exciting, breathtaking, and awe-inspiring" (Kirkus Reviews).
Customer Reviews:
An excellent place to start.......1997-12-24
Whether you are interested in John Muir specifically or just want to read about an interesting life, this book is an excellent place to start.
John Muir had an incredible and important life, and it is told here succinctly in his own words, excerpted to emphasize the profound. It is a glimpse into a lifestyle 99.9% of us will never know, yet it is truly important to our times. His love of nature, adventure and exploration is a reminder of why we need to experience more than our 9 to 5 workdays and why we need to apply ourselves to the protection of the Earth.
Muir was a gentle but strong man, a genius with simple needs, solitary yet influential. This book is a terrific way to look into his life and his time and to gain some inspiration into our lives and our times.

"Bold use of color," declares the book's forward, "like profound music and poetry, can evoke emotional responses not easily described." Color is a vital part of an exciting and interesting environment, yet so many people are afraid to use it; they wind up instead with safe (and very dull) rooms. Fear no longer. With the help of this spectacularly visual book, just about anyone can learn to utilize color as a versatile and powerful decorating tool. Crammed with ideas, the well-written text explains how to successfully employ both bright and pale shades through the use of paint, furnishings, fabrics, and decorative accents. Every spread is filled with intense, eye-catching photographs that should inspire even the most timid homeowner to introduce some color into every room.
Book Description
Country Living True Colors

Wonderfully versatile, it can be introduced into a room in an infinite number of ways, from paint and fabric to decorating details such as wallpaper; rugs, art, and collections. Employs use of different color hues from brilliant to subtle. Teaches you how to use the colors together so that anyone can learn to utilize color as an interesting decorating tool. Beautiful pictures, well written!
This book was so much fun!.......1999-03-28
I received this book as a gift from a friend that knew I love fabric and love color. I have spent hours (literally) thumbing through this book, enjoying the colors and enjoying the different decorating styles. My friends and I pulled it out at one of our Girls Only slumber parties (I'm 39) and spent 2 hours looking, and ooing and ahhing over it! I also got the nerve to paint my living room sage green, and I love it! Fun, fun, fun book!

Book Description
This photographic tribute to the quilt maker’s artistry is both beautiful and practical, with 20 superb designs for classic patchwork or appliqué versions. Portraits of the finished work accompany each project, along with a table that instantly shows how much fabric you’ll need and full-size pattern pieces to trace and cut out. Includes more than 100 variations on those patterns, watercolor illustrations, and how-to photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Large range, small style. .......2005-05-13
Printed in 1992, this thick tome (207 pages long) contains a huge variety of quilt patterns, traditional and funky. Unfortunately like most interior decoration or themed books from that still 80's influenced era, it has not dated well.
Interesting for reference without containing too much inspirational material, the book includes 20 quilt projects illustrated with high detail and good instructions.
It also photographs myriad pages of quilts separated into different themed sections - "amish" "Log Cabin" "Caring for Quilts" & many more subcategories.
Whilst being an excellent compendium of quilts of the past, photographing them in such dated settings detracts from the charm of the quilts themselves.
Understandably this book was created from a collection of "Country Living" photographic shoots therefore the approach is a reasonable one.
Not recommended as anything more than a library borrow, unless purchaseable for under $5.

Depends on what you are looking for.......2003-09-27
This book features traditional quilt patterns, a variety of pictures of quilts in country home settings, and some historical information. Nothing earth-shattering here. The quilts are beautiful in their own way, but if, like me, you are looking for fresh new ideas and exciting fabrics and colors, this is not the book for you. If you love traditional or antique quilts, then you might like this book. It would make a nice coffee table book.
Wrap Yourself in Quilts.......2000-10-18
For lovers of traditional quilts and how to make them, care for them, and show them off, you can't find more inspiration. Quilts are photographed in homes, on porches, on tables, on the walls of houses of all styles and tastes. If you are just starting to quilt or have rooms full of fabric waiting to stitch, this book will give you new ideas. A great gift and a wonderful book to curl up and read under your favorite quilt.
