1 out of 5 stars Feng Shui for Dummies.......2007-05-15

I laughed out loud when I got this book in the mail. Lesson learned...from now on I will read ALL descriptions MUCH more carefully! I was FULLY expecting a FULL sized book but got this tiny thing. Felt like I was dooped but checked and it does clearly say Miniatue Edition. Live and lern.

1 out of 5 stars Lesson learned..........2007-03-19

To say I was disappointed when I recieved this 3 inch by 3 inch book would be an understatement. I have purchased numerous other books in the Dummy line so was not expecting this miniature book. Had I read the reviews like I usually do, I would have known and not wasted my money.

1 out of 5 stars Also Disappointed - THIS IS NOT THE FULL SIZE BOOK!.......2007-03-02

I wish I would have read the reviews closer before buying this book.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE FULL SIZE BOOK!!!

If take an 8.5" x 11" piece of paper and fold it into sixths, this book is still smaller than that. I think the description is very misleading. You have to search really hard through the description to discover that this is a miniature edition. I feel this should have been listed in the title. I'm very disappointed!!!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-02-23

I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one "tricked" into thinking this was a full sized book. This book is ok for the principles and history, but I was looking for applying feng shui to my home, and out of 124 minature pages, there are very few pages on applying specific principles to your home.

1 out of 5 stars Feng Shui for Dummies.......2007-01-19

I was completely blown away when I opened my "book." At 3" by 3" it is a mini book at best. No where was that stated in the discription. It has some interesting info in, but come on, when I was expecting a full sized book, I was greatly disappointed.

Anyway I received the book in record time and not only is it in excellent condition but it has a lovelier cover than advertised on this page! Hearty thanks to the folks at BookAlley for their promptness, FIVE STARS for their service. Look forward to studying the book.

5 out of 5 stars Get more from your garden with this book!.......2002-12-11

Once again, Lillian Too manages to compile feng shui information in a way that is thorough, interesting, and easy to understand. As the publisher of a weekly feng shui ezine, redlotusletter.com, I read A LOT of feng shui books. This book has it all and explains everything in a way that anyone can understand. Unfortunately when it comes to feng shui, many people overlook their garden. Gardens are a very important element in the complete feng shui of your home or office, as they are the "arms" that surround your location. Anyone seriously interested in feng shui, should not overlook this important area. What's wonderful is that Feng Shui for Gardens explains in very easy terms all the considerations such as shape of the lot, elements such as wet or dry areas, and how to activate areas of your garden to improve your life or business. Best of all, the book has many, many beautiful images to accompany the text, which I personally find to be very helpful because they demonstrate ideas visually. Like the spaghetti sauce commercial says, "it's all in here." From rock gardens, to water gardens, greenhouses, to fishponds, you'll find it covered in this book. The book also has an index (I love these!), a glossary, and sources for further information. In short, this is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to incorporate feng shui in their garden. It's on my bookshelf.

3 out of 5 stars Beginners Take Care.......2000-10-11

Gill Hale has done a nice job of introducing Feng Shui concepts, but I feel this book is perilously lacking in depth. OK for those who want to dabble because it's trendy, but not much else. Photos are good; basic design advice is sound. BUT as a Feng Shui landscape design consultant with several years experience I have grave reservations about anyone relying on this book for serious Feng Shui. Hale's grasp of many FS concepts seems superficial at best, and possibly harmful if not well understood when applied. For serious readers I strongly suggest instead Lillian Too's 'Complete Illustrated Guide to Feng Shui for Gardens', very readable, lots of good photos & diagrams.

I really like the color photos. She is very clear and informative as well as encouraging. It made me feel like staying home just to garden!

5 out of 5 stars Tangible philosophy.......2000-04-12

I have had a necklace for years with the I Ching symbols, but I never knew their meanings. In this 228 page beautiful book, feng shui is explained beautifully and simply. For the first time I understand the elements and their relationship with energy, astrology and healing. Simply the best book I have read for novices like me who have admired the tranquillity and peace of oriental gardens but were unable to capture the techniques required to plan such a simple yet complex space.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2004-02-12

What a lovely, positive and uplifting piece of work. As a newcomer to the world of Feng Shui but an experienced gardener, I was so delighted that Lillian was so encouraging and informative. Give it a go, you too will be the recipient of all the benefits of this glorious way of life in your lush gardens.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful collection of ideas.......2004-01-30

I found this book a wonderful collection of ideas, rather than a 'narrative'. Almost every 2 page layout can stand on its own as a graphic/textual design. I particularly enjoyed the discussion of the creative and destructive cycles. This wasn't anything new, but it made sense for the first time.

The book strongly emphasizes the coordination of garden layout with a southern facing home entrance. There really are no alternatives offered. I found this a bit rigid at first, but the northern exposure of any garden wall will always have limited sunlight, so I concluded it might not be entirely unreasonable.

Ms Too minces few words when something strikes her as a bad idea. I think at one point, she concludes a misplaced water feature could lead to madness in the family. This is likely to offend some, but one won't be bored!

The book seems a good reference. Since every 2 page layout is so rich with metaphors and relations between text and graphics, it will be rewarding for study over and over, again.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down.......2001-12-12

This book flows around its subject matter in much the way that the water dragon formula in Chapter Six identifies "auspicious" water flows with respect to the main doors facing different compass directions. It is well written and concise while still covering a lot of ground. I was fascinated with the collage illustrations. And I wouldn't be at all surprised if it turns out to be auspicious to read a book that has the word "auspicious" on every page.

1 out of 5 stars Completely impractical for most gardeners........2001-08-12

If you just bought yourself a big empty lot and will be designing and building your house and garden, this is the perfect book for you. For the rest of us with small, non-rectangular lots and existing houses, this book is useless.

I've never understood why so many people have a hard time understanding feng shui, but reading this book illuminated me. My interest in feng shui comes from Karen Rauch Carter and Terah Kathryn Collins, both of whom take ancient philosophies and practically and usefully apply them to Western culture. Lillian Too's feng shui seems to me to be so rigid as to be impossible for the majority of us to implement.

For example, this book advises that water elements (ponds, fountains) should go on the north side of your property. Well, that's not where I want (or have room) for my fountain. I want a fountain--where else can I put it? This book doesn't say, leaving me with the impression I'm courting feng shui disaster to place a fountain anywhere else in my yard.

This book also advises that palm trees, because of their height and the shape of their leaves, are dangerous to have anywhere around your home. As a Southern Californian, I find this very hard to believe. I also don't care for the assertion that cacti and other desert plants are dry and "dead" and therefore bad to have in my garden. Am I supposed to purchase only those plants that grow in China, regardless of my own climate and soil conditions?

I had hoped to obtain some sound advice to help me design my garden, but this book is filled with inflexible dictates rather than helpful guidelines. There aren't many feng shui gardening books out there, but I'll wait for a good one to be published. I got my money back for this one.

2 out of 5 stars Feng Shui for Gardens.......2001-04-07

The basic ideas in this book are good and the illustrations are great. However several subjects were lacking complete explaination and left me thinking I had missed something. The biggest disappointment for me though was the over-use of the work auspicious. By the end of the second chapter I caught myself counting how many times that word appeared on one page. I realize the word auspicious is a very powerful word, but in a 217 page book that word appears at least once on every page or at least it sure seemed so? I don't think I will be able to get past this and probably will return the book for another selection by a different author.

Book Description

Gardens for the Soul is a truly inspiring approach to garden design. Garden designer and plantswoman Pamela Woods' unique approach teaches you how to create a garden that reflects your spiritual beliefs and inner emotions. She invokes the power and beauty of ancient symbols, like Celtic wheels and spirals, with Eastern practices, such as feng shui, to create gardens that are relaxing, meditative and, above all, beautiful.

Beginning with a discussion of what makes a garden spiritual using historical examples and her own modern designs, Pamela then discusses how to analyze and channel the energies in your garden using techniques such as feng shui, dowsing and basic common sense. She also looks at ancient symbols and systems, for example, The Tree of Life, the medicine wheel, mandalas, spirals and labyrinths, and how to incorporate them into your own garden. Pamela then explores how shapes and forms in nature are reflected throughout the universe, in history and in science, and how to draw upon these universal patterns as inspiration for your gardens. Inspirational chapters explain how plants can possess healing powers and symbolic mysticism and explore how to appreciate the foundations of your garden--tending the earth itself, incorporating wildernes and understanding the seasons that nurture your garden.

Simple graphic illustrations, helpful plans and John Glover's evocateive photography combine with spiritual theories and practical garden advice to help you create a space that is full of peace and resonance--an extension of your own soul and somewhere you will feel completely at home.

2 out of 5 stars Bizarre.......2006-10-09

What a bizarre book. I checked it out from the library expecting beautiful photographs of stunning gardens and equally lovely descriptions. Not here! Instead, there are lush photographs and bizarre psychobabble. Of course, I am a scientist, and have a hard time dealing with this type of nonsense at the best of times.

Don't waste either your time or money. The photographs are beautiful, but the the written portion seems to consist solely of Ms. Woods's silly spiritual ramblings.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful and inspiring.......2005-07-20

Gardens for the Soul is a wonderful and inspiring book filled with beautiful pictures.
If you are looking for a "how to build a pond, steps 1, 2, 3" kind of book, this is not the right one for you.
Pamela Woods has a vast knowledge of various ancient systems and symbolism which she incorporates in her garden designs in a subtle and yet powerful way. The book doesn't go into each option in debth, that would explode the size of the book is not aimed. The author gives the reader rather a different view of gardening. Whatever your spiritual inclination there is a way to incorporate it in a garden design to make it a garden for the soul. This book is so inspiring that you might feel that building a sacred garden is your purpose of life where you can be at peace with yourself and the world. A very different gardening book. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A lovely book!.......2006-12-29

I really like this book. It gives suggestions for gardens made to improve one's life. I made a miniture 3x3 foot version of the 'Power Garden' and loved it! This book has some good illustrations. There were no photo examples but I will still rate it a 5 because it has some great information regarding the bagua, the meanings of color and meanings of shapes in Feng Shui, the different types gardens (i.e. Meditation Garden, Lover's Garden, Children's Garden, etc) and many helpful tips. This is a fairly basic book that someone will understand even if they know little or nothing about Feng Shui. This is a cheerful and fun book, with none of the superstition, none of the complicated ceremonies, or number calculations like other Feng Shui books I have read. I own this book and will read it again once I am ready to plant a garden in my new place!

5 out of 5 stars You can create your own feng shui garden.......2000-12-20

I followed the guidelines for plants, color, fragrance, shapes, and meaning, and designed five interlocking Florida feng shui gardens based on Nancilee's book. We used the bagua to locate the right spots (for us) for a Meditation garden, a Healing garden, a Fertility garden, a Child's garden and, in the Power Corner, the Lover's garden.

The result is a tropical paradise which enchants us, our friends, and garden enthusiasts. The book was a great guide to learning by doing.

3 out of 5 stars There are better books out there.......2000-11-29

Fortunately I already knew Feng Shui. This book, I felt was rather thin on the basics of Feng Shui. As I read it I kept waiting for Wydra to touch more upon the Bagua, but it never came.

5 out of 5 stars Provides a new way to analyze your garden........1999-04-14

I recommend this book if you are looking for a new approach to what might be called the garden metaphor. This book provides wonderful definitions of the garden and the importance of place, but also gives practical ways to analyze faults as well as checklists and questions to help gardeners pinpoint where they might want to go. I found it helped to diagnose my problem areas and also pointed to some not so radical solutions that changed emphasis just enough to give my garden a whole new look. I highly recomment it.

5 out of 5 stars Feng Shui in the Garden is a treat for all.......1998-11-17

Feng Shui in the Garden is a great book for either the feng shui savvy or the novice. Easy to understand explanation about feng shui and soul provoking ideas for the garden make this a "best buy". Ms. Wydra presents a mini encyclopedia on vegetation that transcends the norm by including the implications of color, shape and symbolic meaning of plants and trees. The reader also learns how to create speciality gardens to include a power garden, a lover's garden, a meditation garden and a healing garden plus more. She continuously connects all of this with the Ba-Gua, a feng shui roadmap for life. What I especially like about this book is the simplicity of the garden designs - nothing seems overwhelming. I highly recommend this book.

Kind of a fun read. Tells you what you're doing right (no wonder the birds like where I moved the bird bath better than the old spot) and what you're doing wrong (too much clutter enervates the gardener). With or without the belief in chi, it makes a lot of sense.

But where does the compost pile go? It only says where it doesn't go....

1 out of 5 stars May be good but no need of it.......2004-02-20

I plant onion and garlic in garden. Keeps all the ghosts away. No need for shift and incantation.
Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Taking Feng Shui to The Garden.......2007-03-01

This book is excellent. It is "applied" feng shui -- the book is well designed, with high quality photos and illustrations to help you overlay the bagua, and feng shui principles throughout your whole outside environment. She addresses landscape design (feng shui) using color, lighting, material choices, water features, etc., and placement very logically -- using ancient concepts. This book is one of the best of many feng shui books I've read, and after breezing through the book I was able to sketch our house and property to scale, using the bagua overlay, to analyze and plan our landscape design with confidence.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent feng shui guidebook using beautiful pictures.......2004-06-29

This book presents general principles of Feng Shui. It is illustrated by the most beautiful pictures that inspire and provide ideas for westerners wanting to improve the flow of chi and the feel of their gardens. The level of technical information is perfect, allowing one to take advantage of this ancient Chinese wisdom without the frustrations. I compared the pictures in this book with pictures of Japanese-style gardens and decided to proceed with a feng shui garden, even though I am a Zen Buddhist. I immensely enjoyed this book and heartily recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Good garden design.......2003-11-17

Feng Shui is an ancient way of shaping a beneficial life force, called "chi" which is believed to permeate all things and is created by the continuous balance of complementary forces called yin and yang. This ancient Asian belief taps into the benefits of the flow of nurturing energy around us and helps us link to the rhythms and cycles of nature.

This book is a good introduction to the topic, although I would like to have seen a bibliography or reading list to help those who might want to delve further into the subject. It helped me to understand that much of Feng Shui shares a great deal with the basic principles of garden design. There is an emphasis on balance and proportion, on taking time to plan, harmonizing with nature and on creating a unity where each aspect of the garden complements the others. Words like "harmony" and "flow" occur often and I found that Feng Shui agrees with my own personal belief that a garden is no place for straight lines and square corners. I had never thought of "chi" being made harmful by straight lines, or gentle curves enhancing the flow of beneficial energy but it's as good an explanation as any.

The writer has produced a readable book that seems to be well researched. It has lots of pleasant colour photographs, but these don't relate particularly well to the text. Most look like stock photographs that were trotted out for the occasion. But if you're looking for an overview of a topic that's still a bit trendy this book should do it.

4 out of 5 stars Feng Shui In The Garden by richard webster.......2000-04-11

I found this book to be clear, concise and easy to read. Most of Richard Webster's books are like this. The ideas and suggestions were easy to follow, and didn't go too deeply into the whole history of each "feng shui" rule and principle for each idea, which I like. I am the type of person who likes to read a BIT of the history, and be able to apply it quickly. I do not like a whole lot of "long-figuring" to apply a concept. This book appealed to that characteristic. Simple solutions for simple questions. If you like a deeper "why and wherefor" of feng shui in the garden, you better go to Lillian Woo(?) Webster's book will appeal to people who want a quick overview and want to start using basics of feng shui IMMEDIATELY. One does NOT have to be a feng shui master to ubderstand this book.
