3 out of 5 stars Good concept, tough to use.......2007-05-27

The concept is great, and I'm glad I have the book. But it was quite difficult to use because of the need to keep flipping back and forth. This should ideally be presented as a searchable CD, or even better, as an online database with a membership fee. That would also allow for more pictures, which would help greatly in identifying plants.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible for allergy sufferers.......2004-07-08

As someone who has a history of allergies to almost everything, this book truly has become the Bible of allergies for me. In my opinion, this really is the best book ever written in regards to allergies. Tom Ogren outlines the allergy potential for every plant you've ever heard of, and a few you probably haven't heard of. When we moved into our new Southern California home a couple of years ago, we used this as a bible for landscaping -- if the book gave it a good pollen rating, we planted it. If it was a high pollen rating, we didn't plant it. The result? My allergies are better now than they have been at any time in my life, and this book has played a huge part in that! Even if you're not allergic to plants, get this book if you do any landscaping -- if everyone would follow his suggestions, there's no question we'd reduce the amount of allergic reactions by a huge amount. I can't say enough good about this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2003-09-25

I have owned this book for several years now and couldn't do without it. I do a good deal of gardening and before I buy any new plants at the nursery, I consult Allergy Free Grdening. My allergist suggested I buy this book, and I am very glad that I did. AFG helps me pick out trees, shrubs, vines, & flowers that will not cause allergies. It is very easy to use, interesting, useful, and surprisingly, kind of fun to read. There is also a good deal of solid advice on how to grow different kinds of plants.
Several of my friends also own this book and we all find it terribly useful. If you have allergies or asthma, or if you have a husband, daughter, son, or good friend who does, this is the book to own. It would also make a wonderful present for your favorite doctor, especially so if he/she is an allergist. I highly recommend Allergy-Free Gardening.

5 out of 5 stars Changed the way I look at plants........2003-05-06

Allergy-Free Gardening really did change the way I look at plants. I have a background in both horticulture and botany and yet there was so much new material that I learned from this book that I was frankly, amazed. I knew a bit about plant sex, but in retrospect, very little.
In Thomas Ogren's eyes all plants are not created equally--or at least they certainly are not equally of value to us. In the past I planted and never gave much thought to whether or not something would be causing me rashes, allergies or other plant-triggered illnesses. I look at trees, shrubs, vines, flowers, lawns different now though. I use this book to find the best plants, the ones that will be attractive and useful in my garden and that will be healthy choices for me and my family.
I like the way Allergy-Free Gardening is set up. Everything is easy to find, easy to understand, easy to use. This author has a real talent for taking the very complicated and putting it all into easily understood layperson terms. His writing is fluent, personal, interesting. You have the feeling he cares deeply about what he does. I haven't read his newest book yet, Safe Sex in the Garden, but I have two friends who have and they thought it was excellent. I've ordered a copy of it also. But, if you garden or you are concerned about your health, I expect you will enjoy this book. I also find that I use it over and over as a general gardening reference book, since it is full of good, solid, down to earth horticultural advice. This is one of the best gardening books I own, and certainly the best thing written on allergies, asthma, and avoiding pollen.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! This is an incredible book!!.......2003-04-13

I just finished reading and reviewing Safe Sex in the Garden, the newest book by Thomas Leo
Ogren. I had already bought and read (several times) Allergy-Free Gardening. I am becomming a real fan of this author, who I would say knows more about health and horticulture than any other writer I've ever read.
Seriously, Ogren is that rare find, an original thinker who can write well. In both of his books the
text moves right along. It is almost like reading a good novel, except that as you read it,
you are learning so many remarkable, often quite incredible new things.
I have a friend who heard this author speak, at the Huntington Museum and arboretum, and
she told me that he is a fantastic speaker too. But that doesn't surprise me at all.
In Allergy-Free Gardening you will see what has happened in modern landscapng, where
tidy plants (male) are so much favored over pollen-free plants (female). There is a huge
section in the book where many thousands of garden and landscape plants are discussed, and
each one is given an easy to understand allergy (1-10) ranking. Everyone I know who owns this book has put it to use, making their own yards allergy-free. I count this book as probably the most useful
gardening book I own, and find that I refer to it over and over, and not just on health matters
either. The culture of plants, how to grow them best, all this is well covered.
I just can't recommend this book too highly. I wish that every single gardener, landscaper, allergist, doctor,
and horticulture teacher owned a copy. The city arborists need to read this book too, since
so often they are the ones who are planting all those allegenic, male, pollen producing street trees.
This is a good one (as is the super intersting Safe Sex in the Garden) and if you have a
garden and care about your own health, you'll simply love reading it.

safe sex in the garden

And Other Propositions for an Allergy-Free World by Thomas Leo Ogren

Residential and commercial landscapes are loaded with male-only trees and shrubs since they are litter- and therefore maintenance-free. But given a choice, what would you rather do—sweep or battle hay fever? The fact that our urban forests have been propagated with male-clones is a crime on two counts: male plants are the pollen-producing offenders, and without female plants to absorb pollen, allergenic pollen counts are on the rise nationwide. In SAFE SEX IN THE GARDEN, horticulturist Thomas Leo Ogren explores this safe sex issue (plant sex, that is!), as well as many other allergy-related topics: organic gardening, protecting pets against allergies, handling allergy-related stress, and global warming's affect on allergies.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book!.......2004-07-08

Anyone who has read Tom Ogren's book "Allergy Free Gardening" knows it is the bible of all allergy books. I recommend this book just as highly -- Ogren's scientific, common-sense approach to allergies is something that will benefit anyone with allergies, and anyone who has friends or relatives with allergies. I very highly recommend both of these books!!

5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2004-07-08

Safe Sex in the Garden should be required reading for anybody that is in any way involved with making decisions on what plants will be part of both our public and private spaces. Statistics only confirm how pervasive allergies are in the Los Angeles area and the toll this condition takes on the quality of our daily lives and work. I wish for full disclosure from plant growers regarding the potential health impact of the supposed convenience of this cultivars and more widespread knowledge on what company each plant should keep. Thank you. This book could improve the lives of many of us.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating - not dry reading at all.......2003-07-03

You have to love a book with a title like this. You might think a book about allergies and plant sex would be dull, but Ogren's writing style is lively and he knows how to convey information in a fun way. I wish he'd been my science teacher in high school! Everyone who's thinking about doing some landscaping, or has allergies, should read this. I know it's made me think more carefully about what I plant.

5 out of 5 stars A must for everyone's bookshelf.......2003-06-09

This and Ogren's previous book, "Allergy-Free Gardening" should be on everyone's shelf, whether they garden or not. If you want to know why allergy incidence has quadrupled in the last few decades and asthma deaths have reach alarming numbers, this book explains it. Ogren's OPALS ranking scale can help us choose appropriate trees for our own gardens, plus he gives lists of recommended ground covers, poisonous plants, "super trees" and discusses pet allergies and all sorts of other relevant topics.

The book is well-written and easy to understand, even when your sinuses are clogged and your eyes are running.

5 out of 5 stars Great for all your gardening pals!.......2003-05-18

Tom Ogren's new book is a popular commentary on and addition to his first, groundbreaking book, Allergy Free Gardening. It is meant for both experienced and novice gardeners, and for all who may have a plant-related allergy. It is highly informative, and written with humor and style. Do get a copy for all of your favorite gardeners!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2002-09-10

Lots of very good and very useful information. I was looking for something more detailed for people who have
Chemical Sensitivities" that are bothered by the "Chemical emissions" of plants and not the pollen. This book doesn't go into that. But it is a very nice book with very pretty colored pictures that discusses how plants pollinate, when and what precautions you can take to plan a yard or garden as "Allergy Free" as possible. Including plant choices, placements, etc. It does cover MOLDS and spores which is very useful to a person with "Chemical Sensitivities"

"Be Well"

3 out of 5 stars Some good info but disapointing.......2002-06-08

There are lots of good pictures and some general advice for low allergy gardening but if you are only going to get one book it would have to be the Ogren book. The garden designs and plants covered here aren't going to be suitable at all for Southern California gardeners. Most of the plants recomended are high water use and/or cool climate plants. Not much thought is given to low maintenance gardens. The options listed for large trees are minimal. The very best trees, which are female varieties of separatly sexed trees, aren't mentioned at all. Common names of plants are rarely given. While there are many good pictures you have to read carefully to find out whether the pictured plant is recomended or not recomended. Overall I found this book not to be as usefull as it could have been.

5 out of 5 stars It's a proactive approach, rather than reactive.......2001-05-26

Instead of just listing "bad" plants, the author lists not only WHY a plant may cause an allergic or poisonous reaction, but also suggests alternate, safer plants with similar qualities! Rather than being written dryly by a doctor, the author is instead an award-winning British landscape designer who really did her research. The reader feels that finally there is hope for the allergy-sufferer who wants a garden that is both safe and lush rather than sterile and bland. Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars Much better than the other book.......2001-05-18

This book is so much better than the other allergy book, which seems to throw in the author's political views. Lucy Huntington's book is the one that my allergist recommended to me. I've read both books and THIS is the one to get!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information about allergies........1998-09-03

Lucy Huntington designed a low-allergen garden for the Cincinnati Flower Show this year. Her book is authoratative and very informative about allergies and how to avoid or control allergy problems when gardening. Fascinating for any allergy-sufferers; contains useful information about low allergen plants, too.
