4 out of 5 stars Good songs.......2007-04-04

You take Bullseye, The Wayback Machine, and James Bond, and listen to those. They are good cuts. Then the rest, some of which I really don't like. But you take those three, maybe a couple more - it's worth the discount price. For those, I'd recommend it. I put two of those on one of my mix cds right along with my remixes of Metallica live (SnD), Sabbath live (Into Void), Nugent (Please Don't), etc. And I can get tired of those, and never much listen to the lyrics at all. But I like listening to Bullseye and Wayback, over and over again. I'm very partial to guitar intrumentals, with some 'groove' and energy.

3 out of 5 stars THERE'S NO DENYING.......2006-10-26

THAT THIS SURF MUSIC CD GETS YOU GOING. I AGREE WITH ONE OF THE OTHER REVIEWERS THAT THE SONGS MAY AT TIMES SEEM A BIT FORMULAIC, NEVERTHELESS IT IS STILL PRETTY GOOD AND BETTER THAN MOST OF THE CRAP YOU WOULD HEAR ON THE RADIO NOWADAYS. SO IT GETS AND EXTRA STAR FOR THAT BY ITSELF. HOWEVER, THERE IS NOT ONE CUT ON THIS CD THAT IS TRULY ORIGINAL.......AND IT LOSES A STAR FOR THAT!

2 out of 5 stars why surf music died.......2006-07-28

While this may sound negative for the sake of bashing, i grew up with surf music and really like it. Heck I play it (as i imagine some of the people interested in this genre might too). WHile ther are one or four somewhat intersting cuts- this is quantity not quality surf.

Back in the day there werent as many super guitarists, but lots of pretty competant guys....well this cd shows that these cuts seem to be emulating that level of playing and creativity.

The best of the genre is great-this cd is a sampler of Golly Gees and Crown records 'stable'-personally i think it is stale and uncreative-kind of a modern surf thrash-suitable for modern day movie sound tracks-ie -I-IV-V's with insipid repeating hooks and bashing drums, the ballad in minor, but nothing taking the genre someplace new and better, or taking the old and putting a great new twist on it. Just my opinion.

I wouldnt buy this again, as I really found it formulaic and an imitation of the genre with little new or inspiring. and next time ill listen to more cuts more carefully before buying. The sound quality however is quite good, as are the catchy tune titles and group names.

5 out of 5 stars surf mania!.......2004-04-11

The title of this alblum sounds a bit cheesy but the music in the CD is excellent. The songs sound much better on my stereo than the little speakers in my computer. This CD is a champ as far as giving you your moneys worth of songs. I could not find any songs I did not like to listen to and was very impressed with the Supertones songs on the alblum. While not quite as authentic as real 60's surf music I find the collection of songs here to be some of the very best of whats offered today in the modern day surf guitar sound.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Great CD!.......2003-12-20

I picked this CD up after I purchased the other Golly Gee release "Rockabilly Rumble". Someone had recommended it and since "Rockabilly Rumble" was such a great record, I had to have this one as well. I was not disappointed at all. This is an incredible CD with almost and hour and a half of music! No boring tracks at all - and surf music can be boring. After listening to it all the way through I had to listen again and again. "War of The Surf Guitars" is definitely worth buying - even if you live in Texas and can't see the ocean ; )

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not ultimate- but wonderful, none-the-less.......2007-04-14

As good a guitarist as Julian Bream is, one must begin by acknowledging that the title of this 2-CD set containing 32 admittedly seminal pieces written for hand-played strings ( primarily, the lute) is a tad hyperbolistic. An "Ultimate" collection of anything would have to be more complete, by definition, than any two CDs can be and, again, it almost goes without saying that no two people are apt to be in total agreement about what should or should not have been included in any such collection. All caveats considered and aside, this is, indeed, a thoughtfully selected and masterfully performed collection of what is, unarguably, some of the very best classical pieces ever written for the lute. Bream plays some of them on the guitar and others on a renaissance lute - the latter giving a somewhat truer indication of the stylings and musical nuances intended by the various composers. But, even the pieces he plays on the guitar - an instrument that, in it's current form, did not exist when many of the pieces were originally composed - are sensitive and lyrical interpretations that sound as if they MIGHT have been composed for the guitar.

Without spending space here reiterating the specific pieces, their titles and lengths, I will simply list the composers whose works Bream presents so nicely in this collection. They span a range of about five centuries beginning in the time of England's Elizabeth I and spanning the years through to the 20th Century's premier Spanish and Brazilian classical guitar composers. The list reads like a `Whose Who" of classical plucked-string instrument music and of composers whose keyboard compositions work particularly well on the strings of a lute or guitar, and includes;
- John Dowland
- Francis Cutting
- Antonio Vivaldi
- Gaspar Sanz (*)
- Mateo Albeniz (*)
- Manuel de Falla
- Enrique Granados (*)
- Hector Villa-Lobos, and
- Joaquin Rodrigo
(*) = Pieces originally written for keyboard play.

Every classical guitarist has his own recognizable style and approach to the instrument and the material. An experience listener would not confuse Bream's work with that of Andres Segovia, for example: but it is not that one is better than the other. Each, in his own distinctive way, is simply superb. Though the Spanish influence is clearly audible with both musicians, Bream's stylings have a more contemporary lilt and inflection than do those of Segovia; he makes each piece his own. One suspects that each time he plays a piece it comes out differently according to the moment, his mood, the instrument and God knows what else. Segovia, on the other hand, was well known for his constancy once he had found a version of each piece that fully suited his own ear and temperament.
While I am admittedly a Segovia fan, I find Bream's renditions to be noticeably fresher and each infused with an aura of presence in the here-and-now which I find especially enjoyable.

The collection is neither complete not `ultimate', but it is VERY good and well worth having in any collection of classical guitar music. In fact, for audiophiles not familiar with this genre, it is a fair place to begin to develop an ear for and a listener's knowledge of and experience with the classical guitar.

4 out of 5 stars Very Nice Bream Collection.......2005-03-03

I have volumes one and two, but I prefer volume two because it contains later recordings, which are of a better sound quality than the tin-can reverb that predominates in volume one. I really like the inclusion of about a half dozen lute pieces in addition to the guitar. I wasn't a lute fan before, but after hearing Bream playing lute on this CD, I am a convert. Ditto with what one reviewer said about Sor's Andantino Grazioso--purely delightful.

Overall, this CD consists of a good variety of masterfully played music. I only wish most of Bream's recordings were recorded using later technology, which would make his playing shine even more.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I thought!.......2004-11-08

Well, a bit of a "anti-climax"! I was expecting something totally different. Not at all the kind of guitar music I like but will make out a great unexpected gift (hopefully). The delivery time from order to delivery was excellant, 19days - internationally!

5 out of 5 stars Ultimately Satisfying.......2004-02-03

A wonderful companion to the first set, this edition includes 20 beautifully recorded pieces by one of the master guitarists of the twentieth century. And Bream is at his best in these recordings, showing off his amazing technique, as well as his almost daunting emotional power. An amazing gift to guitarists and music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2002-02-11

The brilliance of Breams guitar/lute shines through. If you love any of his work you will love this, I can never get tired of his work.Especially this one. Antantino grazioso is absolutely amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Not a Novelty Record.......2006-05-09

If you plan on buying "Wild Guitar" as a goof or as a funny novelty record, you are going to be very surprised. Anyone familiar with Arch Hall Jr.'s movie career will be surprised that Arch actually plays a pretty good guitar, and has some decent vocal skills. Mixed in among some great early sixties guitar rock are bits of dialogue from some of Arch's films, which is pretty fun. All of Arch's "hits" are on this disk, from "Konga Joe", "Monkey in my Hatband" and "Guitar Twist". You can tell Arch was influenced by surfer rock bands like "The Ventures", but there are also a couple cool blues tunes on here, as well as some decent ballads. Plus you get the themes and background music from most of Arch's movies. The last half of the disk is Arch and Archers performing before a crowd at a Florida Drive-In. This is gold. Arch jokes with the band, does some decent covers of rock classics like "Hello Mary Lou" and "Susie Q". What really amazed me is that you learn that Arch is only 19 years old at this point! He already had 4 movies under his belt, and was touring the country leading his own band! So however you discovered Arch Hall Jr., through MST3K or just happened to stumble across one of his flicks on late night TV, you owe it to yourself to pick this CD up. It's lots of fun, and will probably stay in your CD player for quite awhile.

5 out of 5 stars Probably will be the compilation reissue of the year.......2005-06-29

So far, no 2005 reissue has been so much fun for me as this one has. I knew I'd love it even before I received it in the mail for two main reasons. There isn't a Norton Records album I own that I don't like, and I love the films of Arch Hall Jr. This teenage rock 'n' roll cult hero is best known for his infamous caveman ressurected film "Eegah". People who enjoy that cult classic (featured on "Mystery Science Theater 3000" once) will enjoy this CD. While most of his films were unintentionally hilarious turkeys (with the exception of "The Sadist") he wasn't a half bad guitar strummer. While not on the level of Hendrix, he knew a mean lick or two, and could write catchy songs. As cool as his movie tunes are, his live stuff is even better. Obviously loving what he does, Hall plays through some originals and covers with a sense of fun not found in a good amount of today's music. If you're into pre-Beatles rock 'n' roll or are a fan of Hall's films, this is worth a purchase. I probably won't play this everyday, but when I do play it, it's still fun.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly to listen to!.......2004-05-25

If you're looking for a CD to relax to, or to set a romantic mood, or rock a little one to sleep, this is the one. I was rocking my baby to sleep at a friend's home when she put this on, and he quickly fell fast asleep to the light, beautiful, flowing sounds of harpist Erica Goodman within moments. You don't have to be a fan of the harp to enjoy this music, as the varied composers provide the variety. This is a collection of some the very best possible selections of classical music. It floats lightly through the room and just makes you want to close your eyes, relax, and drink in every sweet note.

Steve Hall plays the classics like I always wanted to as a child taking lessons. Classical, inspirational, and broadway music have always been my love. Steve Hall reaches all with a passion. My hobby is painting--so on days I indulge in my "passion" I turn the CD player on loudly with Steve Hall music and make beautiful "music" of my own. Added instrumentations(on various CD's) from harp, bagpipes, and brass on some are a treat. This CD is one of 5 Steve Hall CD's I have--I love them all.

Album Description

Channel 23 calls their music Tryptafunk. It is a blend of heavy soul, funk, dub, rock, tryp-hop and hard bop, performed by some of San Francisco's most potent musicians. Memorable vocal songs remain the focus of this cd, however it is peppered with some experimental flavors, and ripping instrumentals. Recorded on all tube gear, the sound is full, raw, and fat. Running at 66:30, with 17 tracks you get over an hour of one of San Francisco's most innovative new groups.

...one of my favorite bands now channel 23 flows through different types of music and gets into some pretty funky grooves. buy it and you wont be dissapointed

5 out of 5 stars Wow, Float's my boat.......2003-02-24

I picked this up after finding eenor thru the Frog Brigade shows, I was blown away by his performance. Where is this band, how can I see them? This band should be on the Grammys tonight winning something. The cd is long and covers lots of styles and I like the way it travels, takes me on a ride. Too hard to describe here, just buy it. Somebody get this band to tour please.

4 out of 5 stars So smokin', you'll think you've been cremated..........2001-11-15

Anyone remember S.F. locals The Limbomaniacs? How about South-Bay wonders Psychefunkapus? Of course we all know about Primus, and for those who don't know, there is a Les Claypool connection with this band.

Well, this is a mish-mash of them all, with a little Oingo Boingo thrown in for good measure. A somewhat ok comparison would be like the outfit Ulu, only a little more funky. It is (bottom)-slappin, grease-drippin, funked-out, jazzed-out, music. Drips like butter of a hot biscuit, as some may say. For a measely (cost of cd), you cannot only work to get these boys some new shoes (which they all need), but you can get a heapful of some of the best tunes you'll ever come across, from one of the most awesome bands around (despite the fact that noone beyond Shattuck Ave or Haight St. seems to know who they are).

Get it, get it, get it. Should you wish to try and experiment with other S.F. mind-bending efforts, look for some stuff by Laundry, El Stew, Praxis, Death Cube K and even Ben Wa. Also look for the release from No Forcefield which features Ler and Brain of Primus fame. And, for the utter amazement of what can be acheieved through a six-string guit, check out Buckethead. As Claypool has stated, Buckethead is "actually Neil Schon with Trey Anastasio on his shoulders." Go figure that one out.

But, at any rate, this is HIGHLY worth the effort. Get it and you will not be disappointed. Look up top too....they even let you sample ALL the songs. How can you go wrong?

5 out of 5 stars An endothermic galactic tryptafunkic journey of music..............1999-10-21

Is this band really from our planet? I hope so!!! The dynamics of these artists together make it hard to explain in words how I'm moved everytime I listen to this disc.Their sound is just like they said: warm, raw, and DYNAMIC! Songs like Buzzfly, Float, Room, and Gonzalger Quaalude make you want to search out their next live gig and be part of the 'here and nowness' that this band is all about. You won't be disappointed. FLOAT is one splendid effort! Congrats to CHANNEL 23!!!

5 out of 5 stars Gonzalager Quallude' definitely puts this San Francisco quartet.......1999-07-11

"Channel 23" into their own league. We're talking skills! This band can play, (the drummer is making meat-by-products on his kit quicker than any Wolfgang Puck, the horn player has got breath!) and sing and write unique, worldly pop-music. When we listen to it, we think of a rather steamy amphitheatre in San Paulo, Brazil dancing and sweating to this very dynamic and expressive band all night long. This band should be on tour with Dave Matthews, Mana, or 311-because they cook!

ASV living era does a great job of remastering and repackaging old 78 records. Here are a number of tasty guitar and violin pieces from the late twenties and early thirties. These guys were excellent musicians who could really cut loose in 4/4 time. This is enjoyable for background or focused listening. Another winner from this fine company.

    Album Description

The King of the Wild Guitar rips through a five-decade career-spanning 25 cuts of extreme distortion. Not for the faint hearted.

This CD replaces the extremely popular Ace UK title "The Original Rumble", which is now deleted. This is the finest all-instrumental Link CD available.

No vocal filler, just the guitar sound that launched a thousand riffs, and all remastered. It's quite brilliant.
