Sparse, underproduced, and at times downright dour, On the Beach was Neil Young's first studio album after Harvest had transformed him into a mainstream superstar two years before. It was a career move akin to "pissin' in the wind," as the artist himself describes life on one of the album's most famous lines. Young had already recorded the harrowing Tonight's the Night, his indictment of '60s drug culture and the damage done, but his label rejected it as too abrasive. So the artist gave them this instead. Less mournful but still haunting, the album is basically Young's rejection of rock stardom and what had become of the counterculture, covering a range of subjects, including Richard Nixon and Patty Hearst (the epic "Ambulance Blues"), his affair with actress Carrie Snodgrass ("Motion Pictures"), and, most famously, years before it became "chic" to do so, Charles Manson (the rocking "Revolution Blues"). "Vampire Blues," meanwhile, seemed to be about all those topics, as well as Young himself. Full of despair and little hope, On the Beach would nevertheless eventually come to be reappraised as a rock culture masterpiece. --Bill HoldshipAlbum Description
2003 remastered reissue of 1974 album. This dark yet triumphant album, with guests Graham Nash, David Crosby & The Band's Rick Danko & Levon Helm, initially peaked at #16 & achieved gold status. Eight tracks. Reprise.Customer Reviews:

Never Looses its Unique and Darkly Profound Feel.......2007-03-05
"Walk On" is that real catchy country/rock pop tune with riffs and hooks, a style Young seldom showcased. "See The Sky About to Rain" had been around for a number of years and is a tender ballad with some nice steel pedal guitar and organ work. "Revolution Blues" is Neil at the top of his game. The banjo comes out on "For the Turnstiles" along with Neil singing in a real high pitched voice, it has a real rough charm to it, as does most of Neil's stuff. "Vampire Blues" is a little bluesy rock number. The title track is a moving and atmospheric delight, close your eyes and immerse yourself for 7 minutes. Some great lines in that song. "Motion Pictures" is a raw acoustic ballad with some nice guitar fills, some honest lyrics and a nice melody. The closing track would be one of his finest compositions, a near 9 minute acoustic narrative song, more organic, earthy and moving than any of Bob Dylan's tunes of similar length.
This album is best listened to at night.

The screenwriting/directing debut of veteran British stage and screen actor Charles Dance tells of a pair of Cornish spinsters (Judi Dench and Maggie Smith) who discover a charismatic young Polish violin virtuoso castaway (Daniel Bruhl) on the beach below their home. The tale leads inexorably to tender romantic conflicts and a warm concert house finale. Composer Nigel Hess masterfully utilizes his background as Music Director and House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company to conjure a score that evokes its quiet, emotional dignity via neo-classical orchestral arrangements that feature real life young virtuoso Joshua Bell on solo violin. Hess' intimate original compositions form a virtually seamless tapestry with the story's requisite classical repertory choices, which range from Massenet and Debussy to Bell's delightful variations on Paganini's "The Carnival of Venice." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Dan Zanes, lead singer of the 1980s roots-rock band the Del Fuegos, didn't need to enlist the high-profile help of pals Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega to produce a crowd-pleasing kids' record, but he got it anyway. On Rocket Ship Beach, where traditional tunes such as "Polly Wolly Doodle" (with Crow) and "Erie Canal" (with Vega) mingle in loosey-goosey, just-for-the-fun-of-it fashion with originals such as the plucky "All My Friends Live in the Woods" (written by Bad Company buddy Simon Kirke), Zanes exhibits the same plugged-in exuberance that gave his former band its unpredictable zing. Besides the no-amateurs instrumentation, which includes Zanes on guitar, lap steel, banjo-mandolin, and studiophone, and G.E. Smith on banjo-mandolin and guitar as part of a kickin' string band that performs the classic "King Kong Kitchie," plus a cluster of others, what stands out most about this 17-track funfest is its draw-you-in friendliness. Pitching in with the pros (who also include dancehall rapper Rankin' Don--he delivers the gruff stuff on "Father Goose" and "Sunny Side of the Street") are family friends such as the gang of West Indian babysitters turned vocal group the Sandy Girls, who give it up to impressive, get-you-boogying effect on "Emmanuel Road," and a kindergarten class that contributes, adorably, to "Sidewalks of New York." All told, this is way hipper than most kids' records and it also razzle-dazzles with its packaging--Rocket Ship Beach arrives in a chunky, colorful board-book illustrated with sweet, fantasy-fueled beachside scenes by banjo player and Zanes's brother-in-law, Donald Saaf. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The Producers was the vehicle that first proclaimed Mel Brooks's decidedly singular comic vision as a film director in 1968. At the time, the world may not have been entirely ready for the depth charges of hilarity he unleashed; but more than three decades later, it seemed almost foreordained that the film's retooling as a full-fledged musical--directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman--would become the smash hit of the 2000-2001 Broadway season (even before opening at the St. James Theatre in April). Brooks is, of course, no stranger to the Broadway musical genre or to songwriting, but skeptics might find themselves taken by surprise at just how outrageously well all the threads come together for the new show. The film's absurd core vignette--the infamous "Springtime for Hitler"--if anything gains a few notches in hilarity when framed by a character-rich musical that comes off as both parody and valentine in its mimicry of Broadway's "golden age." Brooks (with the help of idiomatically expert arrangements by Glen Kelly) has cooked up a variety of numbers constituting a virtual primer of old-fashioned American musical comedy styles (there's even a toying with Cabaret-style decadence), but they're always coated with an extra layer of zaniness. In fact, the whole show becomes a Chinese box of parodies within parodies. But what really gets the whole mix working is a surefire cast headed by Nathan Lane playing Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick doing a delightfully nebbish turn with delusions of misplaced glory as his sidekick, Leo Bloom.
From his first big number (musically winking at Fiddler on the Roof), Lane hungrily lays claim to the role, undaunted by his formidable predecessor, Zero Mostel. Even on disc, you can visualize his over-the-top mugging as a dethroned "king of Broadway" who was "the first producer ever to do summer stock in the winter." Comedy, as they say, is all about timing, and that's exactly what Lane gets right. His interactions with Bloom, Franz Liebkind (Brad Oscar), and Roger de Bris (Gary Beach) are priceless, even when only in sound. As for the tunes, Brooks crafts a number of truly memorable ones--don't be surprised to find yourself horrified as you hum along with "Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop" and, of course, "Springtime for Hitler." --Thomas May

Spring Time for "The Producers".......2005-12-13
While "The Producers" Is not as musically complex or mature as other "Best Musical" scores of recent years (Spamalot, Avenue Q, Hairspray,) It is funnier than all of those put together. Nathan lane And Matthew Broderick Are perfectly cast in their roles and Caddy Hoffman is great, and when Ulla belt, she Belts!
the rest of the cast is amazing.
As for the song I can't think of one that I don't like, They are all great!
I would hope that the fact that the show makes light of Hitler doesn't turn you off, because you would be missing somthing great.
Mel Brooks = Brilliant.......2005-12-12
I was not disappointed. It was funny, racy, and downright fabulous. I bought the soundtrack at intermission and have been listening to it ever since. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves musicals. Lane and Broderick play off each other perfectly, Cady Huffman has one of the best belting voices I've heard in ages, and the songs are actually FUNNY.
Aside from raving about one of my favorite shows, I would like to address the comments made about the show downplaying Hitler and being racist towards Germans. In no way does this show downplay Hitler's terrible deeds. Bialystock and Bloom make several comments about how disgusted they are about the play- the fact that it is so insulting to our sensibilities is the reason why it was chosen in the first place. I am Jewish and have studied the Holocaust and WWII for years. I was not offended in the least, nor did I feel the Brooks was promoting or trivializing Hitler's war crimes. Brooks himself is Jewish for god's sake.
Second, I see nothing in the show that is racist towards Germans. Yes there is a Nazi in it who is German. How is that racist? The Nazis went all over the world after WWII- it is possible that several ended up in New York City. And no one will argue that some Nazi's were German. You might as well say that the show is discriminatory towards Swedes, or gay directors, or producers, or the countless number of things made fun of in the show.
it won 11 (if im correct) TONY awards for a reason!.......2005-12-08
So about the CD...awesome. I love these songs, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the movie version of the musical coming out in late December! GO SEE IT!

Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31
When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.
This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.
Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.

Jimmy Buffett's music has always had an easy-in-the-islands feel to it, and if his songs seem like postcards sent from exotic locations or notes hastily scribbled on a bar napkin, that's more or less what they are. On Buffett's 31st album, the singer/songwriter, bestselling author, pilot, and son of a son of a sailor offers alternately wry and sentimental observations on everything from our impending doom ("Waiting for the Next Explosion") and the appeal of Cajun food ("I Will Play for Gumbo") to the ultimate vacation getaway ("Beach House on the Moon") and life's sweet mysteries ("Oysters & Pearls"). Buffett also tries on a couple of intriguing covers, including Bruce Cockburn's pensive "Pacing the Cage," Mose Allison's sly "You Call It Jogging," and Fred Neil's laid-back "Lucky Stars." Thanks to the return of a few long-lost members of his Coral Reefer Band, Beach House on the Moon often recalls Buffett's early albums--cause enough for Parrotheads everywhere to fire up the blender, string up the hammock, and give this one a spin. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

I mean, I'm a big Parrothead, and I REALLY want to like this album, but he makes it so very difficult with the weak material included. In fact, with repeated listens, it's actually getting harder to enjoy it.
Jimmy just seems to be coasting most of the time on this disc (coasting in a bad way), going through the motions, on autopilot. He really needed/needs a reality check of his music, away from his current trend, and back to something of substance. I doubt that this album will hold up to the test of time as his 70's-80's albums have.

I wanna live on the Moon!.......2002-10-12
I recently began to re-visit Jimmy Buffett's body of work.
Yes, I am a Parrothead...long before they named us that.
But, more than that, I love the music. And even more than that, I love a good story put to music.
Buffett has done himself proud on this CD. The stories he tells about tattoos (PERMANENT REMINDER OF A TEMPORARY FEELING), failed love affairs (YOU CALL IT JOGGING), being a caveman in the era of the world wide web (FLESH AND BONE), being a true son of the south (I WILL PLAY FOR GUMBO), and the advice he gives to misery husbands (SPENDING MONEY) are top notch. Not only are they musically pleasing, they're very well written.
I'd like to ask Buffett what comes phirst -- the music or the words.
However, this year on the first anniversary of 9/11, I was really struck by the words to PACING THE CAGE. It was if I was hearing it for the first time. Made me weep.
Get this CD and enjoy songwriting and the joy of performing at its best.
Go, Jimmy!

An Atmospheric Gem.......2000-08-15
The standard of musicianship is high: Dave Mattacks played drums on the Joan Armatrading album, and Max Middleton did the keyboards on the very heavy 'Blow by Blow' of Jeff Beck. Rea himself has a catarrhal voice which, while not quite possessing the gravelly nature of Tom Waits's, often sounds as if he is just recovering from something seriously bronchial.
Many of the tunes here are great. The only ones that seem possibly out of place are the upbeat ones which disturb the mellow sunbathing mood. Rea has always been wielding a guitar whenever I've seen him on TV, but with many of the tunes,I cannot tell whether they were originally written on guitar or keyboard. Rea has himself re-recorded the track 'On the Beach' several times, but the version on this album -- the first -- is by far the best and much more subtle.

Mike Rutherford and cohorts have had their ups and downs commercially, but the quality of their output has never wavered. Paul Young (the one from Safe Cafe, as must always be pointed out) and Paul Carrack are outstanding vocalists, and the top-drawer musicians click seamlessly as usual. "Looking Back Over My Shoulder" and "Another Cup of Coffee" are fine tracks, but it's too bad the project as a whole is tarnished by the lame Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder covers. --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:
New directions explored as this album lives up to the band's high standards.......2005-12-23
This is the first album where there is a lineup change in the band. The big change is that keyboardist Adrian Lee is demoted to studio musician status. The other original members Rutherford, Carrack, Young, and drummer Peter Van Hooke remain. As he has on the previous three albums, Christopher Neil returns as producer. The high quality of songwriting continues with Neil, B.A. Robertson and Paul Carrack (who started making songwriting contributions on "Word of Mouth") teaming up with Rutherford (who writes all of the original material). Another big change is the band does two "cover" songs: Smokey Robinson's "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" and Stevie Wonder's "I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Last Forever)". Robinson's song introduces a new side to the band - a Motown influence.
As for the lead vocals, the rule of thumb for the first three albums was that Carrack delivered the intense vocals while Young focused on the passionate vocals. The interesting thing on that album is that I see more "melding" of the styles of Carrack and Young. In addition to their voices have some similarities in style, there are cases where they team up for duets.
Here is a review of the tracks:
"A Beggar on the Beach of Gold": This song has a bit of the classic Mechanics feel - especially the keyboard work and the passionate vocals of Young. This song kind of reminds me of Mike + The Mechanics version of the "Rich Man, Poor Man" story.
"Another Cup of Coffee": Another classic Mechanics feel - especially the keyboard. Carrack sings lead vocals in the narrative about a "good housewife". I believe Young also contributes some background vocals.
"You Really Got a Hold On Me": Carrack and Young perform this as a duet - and they should more of this. It's a terrific cover of the Robinson tune as the Mechanics incorporate some Motown-style elements into this song.
"Mea Culpa": This song almost has a similar Rhythm to Genesis' "I Can't Dance" when it starts - definitely a different feel than the "Classic Mechanics feel". Young does great on vocals.
"Over My Shoulder": Outstanding track - this song has almost an acoustic guitar feel to it. Carrack delivers some terrific vocals from start to finish. The songwriting is outstanding as this song explores looking back at a failed relationship.
"Someone Always Hates Someone": This song almost has a the feel of early 1980s Genesis (i.e. the "Genesis" album) and even incorporates some progressive rock elements. The song deals with the impacts of hatred.
"The Ghost of Sex and You": Not a bad track. The melodies on this track also have a feel of early 1980s Genesis. This is the longest track on the album and sometimes I do grow a bit tired of this track.
"Web of Lies": This song once again shows the Classic Mechanics feel. Great vocals by Carrack and there are some good guitar rifts by Rutherford on this song.
"Plain and Simple": Great song. There is more great guitar work by Rutherford. Young delivers terrific passionate vocals. This song features an interesting incorporation of "news clips" in the middle of a song that discusses someone wanting a "simple life". The melodies during those news clips show a slight progressive feel.
"Something to Believe In": While Young has the lead vocals, Carrack joins in making for a terrific duet. This is another example of how these two vocalists work brilliantly together. There's more great guitar work by Rutherford.
"A House of Many Rooms": This song almost has a slight R&B feel to start. This song also grew a little tired on me as I listened.
"I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Last Forever)": This is the Stevie Wonder cover and this has more of a Rock sound to compliment the soulful vocals of Carrack.
"Going Going....Home": The harmonies on this song compliment the lead vocals of Young perfectly. This is another outstanding track from a songwriting perspective as it deals with someone who has left his family behind, but realizes he can't run away from his problems and yearns to go home.
The liner notes include the lyrics for all of the songs as well as the songwriting and production credits. Overall, this is a very good album - and with better promotion, this album could have also been a commercially successful album. While Mike + The Mechanics stuck to a formula for the first 3 albums, I like how they switch gears for album four. This certainly will appeal to the core Mechanics fans, but this certainly some great music for anyone to check out.

Towering above all of the other excellent tracks is "A House of Many Rooms." It has lyrics to rival the best of Tony Banks or Peter Gabriel, using the rooms of a house (well, mansion, really) as a metaphor for the human personality. Stay away from me, the protagonist warns his would-be lover, for I am a house of many rooms . . . . There is a slow-build up of the music to mirror the tension in the lyrics, and at the end of the song we get a whirlwind tour of the house, with a whirlwind guitar to accompany us. Brilliant, simply brilliant.
