Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate music for every time of day and every mood.......2007-07-03

With 20 CDs in the collection, we have classical music for every mood and atime of day.

4 out of 5 stars Would give 5 stars if sound quality where better.......2007-06-30

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price. The sound quality is decent, however it is not great. This set will not provide you with the crisp, clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection for a great price.......2007-06-27

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars 20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

4 out of 5 stars Very pleased.......2007-06-10

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this CD. True, I could have listened on line before buying but that would have taken the fun out of the purchase. Besides, I really didn't care for the CD the first couple of times I listened but now I really love it. It's not something to listen to all the time but given the right circumstances e.g. a small gathering of friends, it's perfect. If I'd listened to online, I wouldn't have purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars Sumptuous and mellow.......2002-11-28

The six men of the King's Singers present sweet and light-hearted madrigals of such English composers as Morley, Weelkes, Dowland, Wilbye and Byrd. The thirty five selections include "Now is the Month of Maying", "Though Philomela Lost Her Love", "Sing We and Chant It," the celebration of tobacco entitled "Come, Sirrah Jack, Ho!" and a host of other fa-la-la-la-la venues interspersed with wistful laments. I love the rich, sonorous sound of a male vocal ensemble, with countertenors, tenor, baritones and bass, and these six singers do a great job. Occasional instrumental accompaniments by lute and tabor are included, but this group doesn't really need it--I could listen to them for hours all by themselves. Also quite enjoyable, as well as educational, is their earlier release, "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain and Germany". For a more risque' take on the vocal music of Renaissance England, you might get a kick out of "The Art of the Bawdy Song" by the Baltimore Consort with the Merry Companions.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Collections of English Madrigals.......2002-03-27

Any fan of the King's Singers will regret not having this album in their collection.

This album offers a veritable feast of the choicest English madrigals found on any comparable album. From the obligatory "Now is the Month of Maying" and "Fair Phyllis" to the more obscure "Tan ta ra, cries Mars," there is certainly enough on this album to bring a smile to lovers of Renaissance music - and a spark of recognition to anyone who sang traditional madrigals in high school or university. For serious students of early music, this album comes very highly recommended.

Among the more sonorous offerings on this album, Jones' "Farewell, Dear Love" and Dowland's "Come Again," cannot be ignored. Nor can Bennet's immortal "Weep O mine eyes" be matched more musically than here by the King's Singers.

This album has been played again and again for almost 6 years as both serious listening and background working music. And it has yet to lose its delight.

4 out of 5 stars A Delightful Collection of English Madrigal.......2000-08-16

With 35 tracts to enjoy you're sure to find a couple of favorites. I gave this CD 4 of 5 stars compared to 5 stars for the King's Singers World Madrigal Tour CD. If you prefer all your songs in English, this will be your 5 star CD. Tract 32 "Come again" is my favorite due to the surperb tenor lead and melodic development. Compared to many polyphonic early music styles (1300s-1485), this era (1500-1610) provides many memorable melodies.

4 out of 5 stars A wide variety.......2000-04-28

This is an excellent sampling of English madrigals. This presentation, given by an older roster of the Singers, is a nice introduction to the world of the madrigal, and English madrigals in particular.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Piano Miniatures.......2006-06-13

Felix Mendelssohn's "Songs Without Words" will always have a special place in my heart because one of the "Venetian Boat Songs", opus 19 no. 6 was the first work of serious music that I performed in a piano recital as a child. I have returned to the collection many times over the years, both to hear the music and on occasion to practice some of the pieces.

Mendelssohn composed eight sets of "Songs without Words", each consisting of six pieces, over a course of 12 years (1835, 1837, 1841, 1844, 1845, and two posthumously published sets in 1847). These works are romantic miniatures, characterized by their lyricism (the title of "songs" is apt), elegance, polish, grace, and imagination. Each piece is intended to capture for the listener a specific mood or emotion; they are of the type of romantic piano music sometimes referred to as a "character" piece, as are the individual sections of Schumann's Carnaval and Scenes from Childhood, Scubert's Impromptus, and Moments Musicaux, and much of Chopin. Many of the pieces in the collection have acquired nicknames over the years, but Mendelssohn himself only gave titles to five: the three "Venetian Boat Songs", the "Duetto", opus 38 no. 6, and the "folksong", opus 53 no. 5.

Mendelssohn's Songs were highly popular during the mid-19th Century but have subsequently been criticized by many for their alleged superficiality, their generally cheerful tone, and their lack of intense passion. I find the criticism misdirected. These pieces were composed for amateurs to play in their own homes. They have a flow and a beauty to them that I would not part with. It is sad that domestic music-making, people playing for themselves for the sheer joy of it, is becoming an endangered art.

This two-CD mid-priced Phillips set includes the complete Songs without Words performed by Ilse von Alpenheim. In addition, the compilation includes three of Mendelssohn's other piano works: two sets of variations and an andante cantabile. Ms. von Alpenheim was the wife of conductor Antal Dorati. Her recorded output was not extensive, but it includes the Haydn piano concertos with Dorati at the podium. Ms. von Alpenheim is a near-ideal pianist for Mendelssohn's Songs. She has an exquisite, polished, touch, a singing melodic line and flexible but controlled rhythm. She plays without mannerism. She neither prettifies these works nor attempts to find profundities in them. She offers the type of performance that one can imagine hearing in a home or in an intimate hall. I enjoyed relistening to these performances, score in hand.

Listeners will each find their own favorities in this collection. My favorites include the three Venetian Boat Songs, the first song in opus 62, the opus 62 no. 3 "funeral march" and the the first, and surprisingly romantic, work of opus 67,

Rehearing Mendelssohn's Songs brought me happy moments and made me want to turn to some of these works, including the Venetian Boat Song I played as a child and its two companions, on the piano. Amateur pianists and those who love the piano will enjoy this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, delightful, colorful.......2005-03-21

This is a very expressive and colorful, but not overstated recording. I picked it up a number of years not knowing anything about the performer, but it was the only complete recording in the store at the time. I was impressed the first time I played it, but since then, my enthusuasm grows for it every time I hear it. Only later did I learn that in addition to being Antal Dorati's widow, that she has recorded all of Haydn's piano works and just a few other albums--I will surely be on the lookout for them. I only wish she had recorded more widely.

1 out of 5 stars Not professional quality playing.......2005-02-03

I would avoid this set, despite its price and the fact that it includes all the Songs without Words. Alpenheim is simply not a professional quality pianist and was likely only recorded because of her husband, the great conductor Antal Dorati. Alpenheim doesn't have the technical proficiency or range of textures one would expect from a first-rate pianist but what is most annoying is her inability to shape the music's melodic line into an expressive whole. Look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Ravishimg songs without words!.......2004-12-17

Antal Dorati `s wife was an exquisite pianist wrought in the purest roots of the late Romanticism . Her Mendelssohn texture reveals the wide scope she had . Despoiled of that slender refinement which weakened seriously the score, she is more interested in extracting the dramatic nucleus instead the possible fireworks and the sweet charm of every piece .

The other three recommended versions would be in this precise order : Walter Gieseking , Annia Dorffman and Daniel Barenboim.

Pitifully Guiomar Novaes that incredible brazilian pianist just recorded several pieces but never as whole .

5 out of 5 stars A lot of listening.......2002-09-13

This CD began a serious exploration of Songs Without Words for me that has included the Barenboim recording and others. I heartily don't recommend the latter as being incredibly fast and lacking any sensitivity. By contrast, this interpretation has kept me thinking and holds interest after many months. In fact, I'm on this space to purchase a replacement disc. I should also mention that it is very well recorded and retains the bass without boosting. If you appreciate Songs Without Words, this is the best recording I've found.

4 out of 5 stars Acceptance 2000 EP.......2005-07-16

This six song EP shows the diverse talent that this band 'Acceptance' has to offer. The entire CD only goes for 35 odd minutes but the quality of the songs are terrific. This young band that dabbles inbetween emo and alt rock beats shows alot of promise. 'I believe', 'Things You Say' and 'Torn Inside' are utterly beautiful songs that deal with love and relationships. The lyrics are meaningful and the listener will be able to identify with a song or songs from this album release. It is a beautiful album with six equally succinct songs that will leave the listener a fan of this budding alt rock band from the USA.

5 out of 5 stars The Lead Singer Is My First Cousin.......2003-06-10

This band is truly amazing. I grew up listing to my cousin Jason Vena (The lead singer) and have seen this group evolve. I loved them back when they were called Day Zero. These guys are so dedicated to their art.I am so happy to see that people like the band and their music. Spread the word, Acceptance is the band of today.

5 out of 5 stars Acceptance rocks!.......2003-05-06

I heard about Acceptance on my college radio station at Westmont, the guy whose show I was listening to told me to check them out, and the only thing I regret is that I didn't hear about Acceptance sooner!

4 out of 5 stars Acceptance - Old vd. New.......2003-04-13

This CD is rad. Great songs and a really unique sound. This is the only "emo" band that all my emo-hating friends will listen to. I just got a copy of the new record, Black Lines To Battlefields and its probably going to be my top record of the year. OK i lied, i didnt get the new record actually, I downloaded it from P2P. But I WILL buy it when it comes out.

5 out of 5 stars Great band everyone should know.......2003-02-02

I know that Acceptance isn't that well known....yet... but I know that they are one of the best bands out there. They're cd is definitely worth buying and I would recommend this cd for anyone who likes good music!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD, but who's the real star, Picker or Schumann?.......2002-03-21

As most people, I got to know Tobias Picker through his fabulous "Old and Lost Rivers". I was enchanted and looked a long time for this CD. I finally found it and it is, as I had hoped, great. This recording presents some of Picker's more accessible works, the record with the violin concerto (Composers Recordings - #589) being a totally different side of his output, with earlier and less approachable pieces (at least when you're not used to listening to modern classical music).

This CD presents to different guises of "Old and Lost Rivers". The one for orchestra which has been recorded a number of times and one for piano solo (transcribed for and first recorded by Ursula Oppens on Music and Arts CD-4862-2). The orchestra version is very good, with just the right tempo and sense for rubato. Yet, I like the version on Williams' "The Five Sacred Trees" (Sony - #62729) better, just because the sound of the Houston Symphony can't compete with the London Symphony Orchestra (although Williams takes the tempo a bit too fast). The piano version is a nice addition, although I get the feeling Eschenbach tries to "do" too much with the music in stead of letting it speak for itself. Therefore, the tempo is sometimes dragging.

The Encantadas for speaker and orchestra is really entertaining. Firstly, the texts are very well chosen and Sir John Gielgud brings them wonderfully with his sonorous, somewhat "mushy" voice and his British accent. The orchestral representation of the spoken words is delicate and very well composed, making the speaker more or less a part of the orchestra. The different moods in the texts are vividly painted by the orchestral colors and the use of instrumentation is great.

The romances and Interludes for oboe and orchestra are possibly the finest compositions on the disc. Ironically, the romances (three in number) are really exact copies of the romances written by Robert Schumann for oboe and piano, with 20th century orchestration provided by Picker. The prelude and two interludes are distinctly Picker's own and also distinctly 20th century. The contrast between the different styles and periods is what makes this piece so attractive. The playing Robert Atherholt is very sensitive and clear and it opened my ears to the possibilities of this instrument.

So, all by all, I like this CD very much, recommending it to everyone who wants to explore the lyrical side of Tobias Picker or really everyone enjoying accessible, but modern classical music.

4 out of 5 stars What is a Conlan Nancarrow enthusiast?.......2006-03-21

Some of the music in this recorded program is lovely, in a strange and obstinate way, but I dare say that liking this music pretty much makes one a Conlan Nancarrow enthusiast. The soul who rather enjoys Conlan Nancarrow's singular, difficult music is probably outnumbered by those who would call themselves enthusiasts; the two groups are surely dwarfed by those who cover their ears and run for cover after just a few measures of the average Nancarrow study for mechanical piano.

Contraption #1 stands out for its blending of Nancarrow's signature mechanical piano sounds with Trimpin's mellow mechanical marimba; the two sonorities approximate the tamber of a natural instrumental ensemble, and create a hospitable sonic ambience.

Producer Charles Amirkanian's interviews with the composer, excerpted here, are not only edifying, but reveal the maestro to be more fun-loving and affable than the average expatriate genius.

5 out of 5 stars To Mr Groves.......2003-04-23

The second string quartet remains uncompleted, and the recording of the third by Arditti String Quartet was avairable in Gramavision R2 79440 (out of print?).

4 out of 5 stars Only for the Nancarrow Enthusiast.......2001-03-11

This CD contains a couple of Nancarrow's studies not included in the five-volume set on the Wergo label. It contains the Prelude and Blues for Piano, the former in a player piano version, the latter for an interesting contraption created by a composer named Trimpin. This instrument is like a computerized player-marimba, and it is also featured in duet with the player piano on Contraption No. 1. Other tracks include a player piano arrangements of the unplayable Sonatina, and of the String Quartet. The last eight tracks are excerpts from an interview with Charles Amirkhanian.

Overall, I think this disk is only worthwhile for the Nancarrow enthusiast. I don't know why the player piano version of the String Quartet No. 1 is included; it has no advantage over the string version. I would have preferred that this record included more of the hard-to-find instrumental music by this composer, such as the second and third string quartets.

This recording is a sequel to pianist Carol Rosenberger's "Perchance to Dream," a compilation of lullabies and other restful, tranquil music. It's nice to have a follow-up on such a warm and professionally presented album, and this does not disappoint. On the first disc of this two-CD set there are a number of simple tunes including themes by Mozart, Schubert, and Beethoven; on the second disc we hear their variations. Once again Rosenberger's playing seems suited to the primary goal at hand: putting children to sleep. Her execution is without edges or unpleasant texture of any kind. While it would possibly come across as slightly bland in a concert hall, this approach is perfectly suited here. -- Gwendolyn Freed

The collections itself well deserve the title - lots of sweet, dreaming and classic melodies. However, the bad recording sound has taken away all the goodies created in the album.
