5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of Songs.......2006-08-20

I remember walking into a record shop when I was on vacation and buying my first Hendrix album, it was this one (Rare as Love not Bleeding Heart). This album begins with some excellent live guitar playing, with songs like "little wing" and "room full of mirrors" which far surpass the studio recorded versions in overall soul and sound. The ending 5 songs are all early rock style songs or blues, and finishes with "she's a fox" -- a song that will truly make you feel that you are alongside Hendrix cruising the streets of Seattle in the 1960's.

Rare as Love does not come close to the Woodstock collection, but if you would like to experience some rare and beautiful Hendrix music; this album should be added to your collection. I highly recommend this album to any guitar enthusiast, Hendrix fanatic, or just plain music lover. Really, who cares if this is not one of the original albums, it may be a cheesy looking album cover, but it is still hendrix behind the guitar.

3 out of 5 stars Aliases of this album.......2006-08-07

I'm going out on a limb here, not having it myself, but it sounds like something released in late '78 or early '79 called High, Live, &Dirty--released by an entity called Nutmeg Records, with a bright purple cover and a glaring big "X" on the front to warn listeners of explicit content. On that album, Morrison does indeed utter little besides obscenities, and the phrase "F.H.I.T.A" sounds like it's dubbed in repeatedly; and one even hears Jimi telling him which microphone to sing into--Morrison's recollection of it all was no doubt quite hazy the next day!

But, Hendrix does some respectable guitar work, and it's remarkable in being a good example of Jimi at his most relaxed and informal, indulging his ultimate pleasure in life--tinkering around with some songs and entertaining a small audience in a cozy setting as he did so.

As far as I know, Johnny Winter was not present.

So, if "Bleeding Heart" is indeed the same material, I'd recommend it for the serious or semi-serious Hendrix devotee. Newcomers to Hendrix might do well to hear some of his more well-known material first.

4 out of 5 stars HOW COULD U GO WRONG ?!.......2006-02-23

I DON'T HAVE THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, I HAVE ONE CALLED WAKE UP AND FIND YOURSELF DEAD. THE SAME SONGS ARE HERE AND TO ME THIS ROCKS, EVEN THOUGH JIMS TRASHED JIMI ALWAYS ROCKS WHEREEVER HE GOES. I'D GIVE IT 5 STARS BUT LIKE I SAID I DON'T HAVE THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM. ANYONE WHO THINKS THIS IS NOT A GOOD FIND REGARDLESS OF SOUND QUALITY JUST DOESN'T APPRECIATE RARE INSTANCES IN ROCK HISTORY

1 out of 5 stars False advertising. Don't be fooled........2005-12-08

According to Johnny Winter he never actually appeared on this after hours session at Steve Pauls "Scene Club" in 1968.It's probably Jorma Kaukonen instead of him. Basically the session is based on one of those times in the 60s when someone left the tape machine running without the full knowledge of the artists, mind you, they were so stoned they wouldn't have cared anyway. "Bleeding Heart" is probably the 'best' track on here if i were to make a choice. It's taken at a funky pace.
This recording has been issued and re-issued under various guises and titles under Hendrixs's name both on vinyl and CD.("Woke up this morning and found myself dead" being the most famous) Even came out as a bootleg back in the 70s. The sound is of typical poor bootleg quality and the musicianship is well below par with screaming obscenities being hurled from Jim Morrisons corner that would make the likes of Marilyn Manson blush.(on "Uranus Blues") Well, what more do you expect with a title like that?? The whole session turned into something of a joke inspite of Jimi trying to inject some seriousness into it.Like the original LP i think the CD should carry an 'advisory" label because it's as obscene in places than the vilest rap record today.
Not for the faint hearted. If you are thinking of purchasing it because of Johnny Winter's presence then don't bother because although he did jam with Jimi on occasions Winter isn't present on this session and i think he's thankful that he wasn't.
