Amazon.com's Best of 2001
When Elvis Presley played Las Vegas between 1969 and '76, many rock & rollers screamed sellout. Today, every rock act plays Vegas. When Elvis came to town, it was the event. RCA--still uncovering unreleased stuff decades after the King's death--celebrates his Vegas legacy with two complete, previously unreleased shows from '69 and '70; a CD of previously released material from '70 (much of it taken from the classic Elvis Onstage, February 1970 album); and a fourth CD of mostly rarities from '74 and '75. The latter also includes a show from his disastrous '56 Vegas debut. Elvis began moving in a more mainstream direction in Vegas, and some may complain that the two unreleased shows are very similar to several other released shows from the same period. But, at least early on, the boy could still rock when he wanted and break hearts with a ballad. And the "new" 1970 show includes what may be the best live version of "Suspicious Minds" available. Besides, planeloads of fans from Japan and Europe flew to Nevada just to see as many of these shows as they could in a week--two a night for $15, which included dinner or two drinks! Redundancy was never an issue. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars A NEW DAY IN VEGAS.......2007-06-13

This show that Celine does in Vegas, is a must see show. She is outstanding, and performs outstanding. She wears the most beautiful clothes. I have seen her show 8 times, and going in August, and have tickets for her last show on Dec. 15th. This will be the show of all shows in Vegas. There will never be an other singer that will TOP CELINE DION. Susan

3 out of 5 stars As good as the show.......2007-01-10

This CD is great to listen to and even better after seeing the performance in person. My only regret is that there seems to be a couple of songs missing from the CD that she sings during her show in Legas.

5 out of 5 stars A New Day....Live in Las Vegas.......2006-11-10

Without a doubt Celine is a great singer, she has a voice as beautiful as Barbra Streisand. I really enjoy listening to her.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-11-10

This CD reminds me of when my husband and I went to see her recently. I love the CD. It captures the moment for me. I listen to it All The Time. I have recommended it to everyone I know.

3 out of 5 stars Great as always.......2006-08-04

Celine's songs are always very good; however, still awaiting the DVD of the entire Las Vegas show; not the bits and pieces as was included with the CD.

4 out of 5 stars LIVE IN LAS VEGAS~ ELVIS PRESLEY.......2007-04-07

What can I say,,, Elvis was the best entertainer that ever lived and his music will live on. "Live In Vegas" is Elvis' years in the 70's. Some of the songs are some that were not placed on vinyl or were rarely placed on vinyl. You will enjoy going back to the 70's and listening to Elvis again...

4 out of 5 stars The King Still Rocks !!.......2006-05-11

BMG are really doing a great job with Elvis Presley Box Sets of late and they do deliver once again with this one...Sure, we have heard all of the songs before but the beauty here is that we also get snippets from the early Las Vegas appearances in '56. The rawness of Heartbreak Hotel is still spine-tingling. For a young performer, he still showed at this young age to possess charm and charisma as he wooed the crowd. It is a good collection from some of this best 'live' performances spanning 19yrs ('56-'75)that really capture the magic that only Elvis had. Why did I not give it a '5' ? -beacuse you do get repetition over the 4 CD's. Nevertheless, the king still delivers, even from beyond the grave! - Really for Elvis fans, but will still please the casual observer.

5 out of 5 stars No better Elvis set.......2005-07-25

Every Elvis song you can think of - all performed live!

The recordings are of excellent quality as well -- and most of the performances are excellent

highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars simply.... THE KING !.......2005-07-20

To address a previous reviewer (Timothy Carey "vicvega2003" ) who retardedly suggested giving the King title to another performer... he obviously has not seen ELVIS THAT'S THE WAY IT IS (concert), much of this music is of that period. The early 70's is what really made elvis king. Might I also remind people of Mr. Carey's ilk, that is the public who gave this title to Elvis. Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, or Chuck Berry should be king? Survey says.... NO !

3 out of 5 stars A Huge Elvis Fan Is Disappointed.......2004-09-02

I have to say that I am a huge Elvis Presley fan. There will never be another performer who captures thieir audience quite like Elvis. It's easy for some people to criticize his later concerts and performances, but I can't seem to do it.

With that said, I certainly CAN criticize this poorly put together boxed set. Most people who buy boxed sets like this are people who already own a lot of the artists other albums and are big fans of the singer and/or band. You probably won't find an ordinary person off the street paying $70 for a boxed set of Elvis concerts. So, my question is this....WHY DOES BMG PUT PREVIOUSLY RELEASED CONCERTS IN THIS BOXED SET?? I already own the "On Stage" concert album. But that makes up the entire Disk 3 in this boxed set. That was dumb. I've also already heard most of the other concert performances from this box set on other albums already released. I was hoping for new concerts and unreleased material from this boxed set. I was disappointed.

How many concerts did Elvis perform in Las Vegas? HUNDREDS!! And yet they chose to put concerts we already own in this boxed set. I just don't know why we can't get some new unreleased material. Yes...I do know why. Because fans like me will still go out and buy these boxed sets because it has the name ELVIS on it. It's a big RIP OFF! And I am disappointed.

If you want some good unreleased Elvis concerts, try to find some import CD's off ebay. They are definitely worth the money! This boxed set wasn't.

While the sales of Sarah Brightman's ambitious, Middle Eastern-themed 2003 album Harem may have fallen short of its predecessor, the veteran UK chanteuse's popularity as a live performer has only mushroomed. This live recording of her ambitious, sold-out Harem World Tour engagement at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Arena is testament to that appeal, begging the question: Will Brightman become the Grateful Dead of classical crossover? Indeed, abetted by the rich sonic textures of longtime producer/collaborator Frank Peterson, the worldbeat conceits of her recent studio recordings are folded into a larger, even more expansive live vision here. Brightman's overt dramatic instincts and oft-chaemeleonic vocal abilities drive a slate of material that stretches from the Arabian Nights/Madame Butterflypastiche of Harem's seductive "It's A Beautiful Day" through surprisingly effective classical/rock reinventions of Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" and The Moody Blues' chestnut "Nights in White Satin" to expected classical bowings "Nessun Dorma" and the obligatory nod to "Phantom of the Opera" Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING! She is so much better live!.......2006-12-02

This CD rocks! This is Sarah Brightman on her Harem World Tour, and this performance was recorded at her stop in Las Vegas. The first two tracks, "Kama Surta" and "Harem Overture" debut from her newest album, entitled HAREM. The two tracks are connected, but in the actual Harem Tour, the full piece "Harem" is sung. If you go to www.youtube.com and type in "Harem Tour" in the Search Bar, you can see live videos. I would prefer that the album has placed "Harem" instead of these other two tracks. The third track, "It's A Beautiful Day", is from Madame Butterfly, written by Puccini. This version is Brightman's twist, which some more pop and some English. It's pretty cool. The fourth track on the album, "Dust in the Wind" is from EDEN, an amazing album. Track 5 is, "Who Wants to Live Forever", and it seems as though Brightman never creates a tour without putting this piece in it. It's a beautiful tribute to Queen's rendition. Track Six is "Anytime, Anywhere", also from EDEN. I'm not really into the Foreign Language - English songs, but this works very well, especially because she ends the song with the classical foreign language. The seventh track is Brightman's rendition of Dvorak's "Song to the Moon", or "La Luna". The track is beautiful! The eighth track is Puccini's "Nessun Dorma", and Sarah masters this beautifully! There is no other soprano I know that can sing this piece one octave up and can hold the ending note for ever!!! Track 9 is "The War is Over", which is followed by "Free", both from HAREM. Track 11 is "A Whiter Shade of Pale", from LA LUNA. It's beautiful to listen to. Sarah's version is very gentle, but has a lot of energy in the chorus. The twelfth track on this album is "Twisted Every Way", followed by an instrumental version of "The Phantom of the Opera" Theme. The next track is "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again", which is extended at the end, in which you hear some men cry out "WE LOVE YOU SARAH!", and she responds cutely with an, "I love you, too." The audience laughs! Track 14 is "Time to Say Goodbye", the duet that made Andrea Bocelli famous, and skyrocketed as the number one single sold in German history! The last live track on the album is "A Question of Honour", from "Fly", which is awesome! The last track on the album is a bonus track, which I don't really prefer. However, the whole album is simply amazing. I much prefer Sarah when she is live. She has a more magical quality! If you love Sarah Brightman, then you will love this album.

ALSO RECOMMENDED : Since there is so much Sarah Brightman to choose from, I also recommend EDEN, TIME TO SAY GOODBYE, LA LUNA, CLASSICS, and DIVA.

What an album, absolutly beautiful!
We, the fans of this great artist finelly have in our hands a live album, and it's amazing:
-The voice is totaly live, she sang about 24 complete songs in the show, but the album only contains 15.
-Snow In The Sahara is a lovely song.

If you have the chase of get this alubum, don't doubt and get it; It wond disapoint you!

5 out of 5 stars astounding performance.......2005-06-07

an impeccable concert experience that successfully elevates the album to majestic heights. I had long been a fan of Dead Can Dance and the unparalleled work of Lisa Gerrard. When Sarah Brightman ventured into these Middle Eastern sounds on the Harem disc, I thought it was too derivative of the Dead Can Dance sounds (there is even a sample used on one of SB's songs that had previously been used within DCD).

However, experiencing this epic and intensely mystical concert compelled me to realize the individual and unique glory of Sarah Brightman. Also, this concert is so phenomenally entertaining at many levels that I couldn't help but fall absolutely in love with the special magic of Sarah Brightman. Obviously, the expansive Middle Eastern milieu can accommodate more than one angelic vocalist!

I now consider Lisa Gerrard and Sarah Brightman to be geniuses who both warrant goddess status in the pantheon of lyrical greats. To see either one of them perform live is surely one of the most powerful and memorable sensory experiences one could ever have!

4 out of 5 stars Great, of course.......2005-03-18

Sarah's voice and style are terrific, as usual. However, I have to say that her version of Anggun's "Snow on the Sahara" is fairly bland, especially compared to the original Anggun version. Sarah has the chops but lacks soul on this great song. Everything els here is very nice.

DJ Baby Anne brings the nu breaks style to Las Vegas for Mixed Live, part of the Moonshine label's ongoing series of recorded live sets. Like past entries in the series from Carl Cox and AK1200, Baby Anne's dirty, intensely danceable sound works well in this format, effectively conveying the kinetic energy of her act. A combination of breakbeats, drum & bass, and old-school techno, nu breaks has an organic, retro feel that Baby Anne gets just right. Tracks like Sharaz's "Brain Damage" and Merlyn's "Solar Flares" share minimal textures with snap-and-crackle beats, while Baby Anne's self-produced "Down To Zero" flirts with Fischerspooner-like electro. She's also willing to get evil for darker material like "Nightmare 2002," which gives her set some variety, and the crowd a chance to gather itself for the next big break. As a further bonus, the CD comes with a 5.1 Surround Sound DVD, to give you an even stronger "you-are-there" feel. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Club Ra, located in the Luxor Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip is one of the city's premiere venues. Baby Anne laid down her signature Big Breaks sound to a packed house on February 28th, 2003. We were there to record the mix and capture the crowd reaction from all corners of the club. The end result is another unique installment of the world's only truly live dj-mix series in 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound - Mixed Live

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-06-05

One of the best breaks cd's I own. Tracks 1,4,7,9,and 11 could make an awesome cd alone.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Nu Skool .......2005-05-11

If your used to hearing other Baby Anne albums, you will notice that this one is slighty different. On this live album, the bass queen uses the "Nu Skool"type of breaks which features old school techno mixed with breakbeats, creating an awesome bass monster of an album. What makes this cd so good,is that it was recorded live at RA in Las Vegas, and the crowd screaming in the background really adds life to this mix.If you like dance music, you want this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best........2004-02-16

WTF is going on with my beloved Bass Queen??

The last two cd realeases have been weak in comparison with the first 3.

I remember the release of Bass Queen vol.1, it was like a breath of fresh air. It would turn my car/home into a local club(New Orleans). This is true no longer.

Once a never miss a local gig Baby Anne fan, I do not intend to go out of my way to see her play here. Her recent set at the House of Blues was lame in my opinion.

Maybe I'm expecting too much, or maybe Im still caugh in the breaks sound I so loved in 1998-2001 but something is definitely wrong here.

The few decent tracks on this live mix cd were played out long before the release of this mix. Maybe it is because breaks are so popular in my local clubs that this did nothing to move me, but 5 stars some of you, gimme a break!

Bass Queen, what happened? Is it your fancy new record label contract? Come on, you can tell us. Why are you releasing these cds?????????

5 out of 5 stars If you like break beat it does not get any better than this!.......2004-02-01

I have been a fan of Baby Ann since she broke out through Icey. I think this is by far one one the best mixes she has ever put together. It will make your subs beat and you hi's scream. Very awesome.

4 out of 5 stars Macy Gray Live in Lavega.......2006-11-12

This is my first cd of Macy Gray and she is fresh and cool.

2 out of 5 stars Subpar Live Album of Macy Gray.......2005-12-24

Macy Gray stormed onto the music scene in 1999 with the very impressive debut album "On How Life Is". Things have gone downhill since then. Her subsequent 2 studio albums (2001's The id" and 2003's "The Trouble With Being Myself") failed to take off critically or commercially, and now, out of the blue comes this live album.

"Live in Las Vegas" (2 CDs, 18 tracks, 100 min.) is a curious affair. It is not released by Macy Gray's label (Sony), but by some obscure label called NuTech. Furthermore, the release does not give any indication whatsoever when this was recorded, who was in the band, who wrote the songs, or any other credits. As to the album itself, it just doesn't cut it, and the performances are generally subpar (in particular the back-up vocalists are horrible). As to the few highlights, "Why Didn't You Call Me" is built around a Kraftwerk sample; "Do Something" sounds good as well, and Macy's breakout hit "I Try" also hits the stride. Note that all those songs are from her debut album, in fact 8 of its 10 tracks are on this collection.

Unless you are a die-hard Macy Gray fan, this is not a recommended purchase. Not only is the quality subpar, but the purchase price is pretty steep as well. Buyer beware!

5 out of 5 stars Attention Mystery Buffs.......2004-05-07

If you frequently find yourself wondering about mysteries of the universe & the dark side of human history, get a copy of this recording today! It supersedes the original studio recording by allowing you to hear the actual concert performed by a live band at live Las Vegas show in the same sequence--only the non-musical comedy routines, & redundant choruses have been eliminated.

"Ouverture/Ramsani" opens with some annoying sounds of a baby crying (it's unfortunate they didn't edit this small section, which is the only low point of the production), but then kicks into a very powerful gear. During the performance, strange beings emerge from both sides of the stage, bathed in blinding light, while drummers pound out a Big Bang as they are lowered from the rafters above the gaping audience. Two celestial ladies sing in an other-worldly language that seems to praise the creation of this magical universe!

"Misha" is the most mystical & original-sounding track on the CD--it will totally entrance you! The first mystifying portion of it accompanies the performance of a man maneuvering within a giant steel cube, spiraling over the stage. During the final minute, the song rocks as he escapes the cube & twirls it miraculously like a baton!

"Egypte" provides a steady, Eastern-sounding march during which poles are set up on the stage for the next performance. Eerie, 2-faced creatures crawl headfirst down the 100-foot wall on either side of the stage like lizards from another galaxy!

"Rondo/Double Face" is a rocker with 2 crystal-crisp guitar solos that sound like Martin Barre of Jethro Tull at his finest! The Double-Faces perform amazing acrobatics leaping from pole to pole, grabbing the poles with only their legs!

"Ulysse" slows the pace down to a spooky level as 2 men manipulate each other into a series of unbelievable poses that defy gravity! The celestial ladies seem to cry, "Tristay mor!" Maybe this could translate: "Don't let go!"

"Dome" is a brief transitional piece; the previous act departs from the stage dome that lowers into a mist, & sets the mood for the following jungle sequence.

"Kalimando" & "Kunya Sobe" accompany a breathtaking bungee performance over the audience; the former is an uplifting ballad of epic proportion, while the latter provides a steady, groovy dance beat that'll make you wanna get up & get down! It's Tarzan on another planet!

"En Ville/Frisco" plays as the stage turns into an acrobatic madhouse! The sax on this song wails in harmony with the myriad of leaps & flips!

"Gambade" is another transitional piece for the extensive safety-net setup.

"High Bar" is the pinnacle of the show, both on the stage, & in the speaker system! This song truly captures the anticipation of watching trapeze artists. Even though the risk of injury is minimized by the safety net, it's still amazing to see these guys fling through the air on cue, & somehow manage to catch each other's hands. At times, the song delivers a powerful, unstoppable rhythm; then on cue with the performers, it suddenly halts as we hold our collective breath--then it allows us to breathe again while building up to the next stunt.

Approaching the show's end, an array of drums rises from the mist, & a battalion of drummers bang out "Taiko"!

"Finale", as you can imagine, summarizes the show, & recaps some of the melody presented during "Ouverture". After experiencing this thrilling musical spanning a range of human emotions, "Finale" closes the circle in a magnificent way!

    5 out of 5 stars mystere review.......2003-07-17

Cirque Du Soleil's Mystere is a visual and musical journey through
life's duality, its ceaseless wonders and
its corrupting vices. It is a sequence of acts which heavily
incorporates live music to define mood and add continuity.
The use of classical instruments, french vocalist, and influences from
various cultures add breathe and clarity to the
    amazing physical performances.

"Egypte" begins with the chiming of bells that portends the coming
danger. Intermittent drumming gives way to a wordless
melody that is both hypnotic and eerie. The drums again become the
central sound, quickly partnering with a woodwind
instrument to create an Egyptian-like quality in the music. The singer
begins voicing french words before reverting back
to the original melody. The song seems to be a warning of the
uncertainty of life, the many dangerous roads fate
presents for our choosing. I feel the songs ominous tone is not meant
to frighten the audience, but rather allows us
to better understand life's dueling themes of love and hate. The even
paced and dramatic "Ulysse" is dominated by the
violin and the classically trained vocalist Nathalie Gauvin. The slow
tempo violin style compliments the even delivery
of the vocalist. Gauvins rendition echoes the themes of classicism,
strong and in complete balance with the
    instrumental accompaniments.

Rarely does a song demonstrate the beauty of art through music as well
    as "Kalimando." The song
begins with a slow tempo guitar rendition that segues into a lilting
female voice. The vocalist is able to
reflect a sadness for futures' past and a hope for
beginnings, all in the same breathe. It is this duplicity that invites
the audience to share in a world with invisible borders, a place where
the music adheres only to its own call.
The up tempo "Kunya Sobe" serves to elevate the mood of the audience.
An ensemble of drums, flute pipes, and an

Asian influenced melody parallel the high-energy acrobatic acts. In
this act particularly, the music binds the
audience and acrobats. It is the commonality between a world that
defies convention and a world restrained
    by its self-imposed limits.

"Taiko" introduces itself with a haunting violin solo which is soon
    joined by frantic
tribal-like drumming. The contrast in styles of the violin and drums is
a statement about the cruelties of a life
governed by someone else's pace. It is a reminder to live independent
of negative influences, to make mutually
exclusive unrealized potential and the realization of promise.

I would recommend the music because it accompanies the listener into a
world where truth is beyond reason, where
the questions are never subservient to the answers, and where the
tapestry of life is revealed in the
    struggle between action and inaction.

    5 out of 5 stars Awsome!.......2003-03-06

Featuring songs to the main acts in the new version of the show which began in 1996 and continues today, the recording provokes the sixth sense and opens the third eye! Haunting, romantic and energetic music from a forgotten dream that one may remember!

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2003-02-12

This soundtrack is truly wonderful! The original Mystere soundtrack was good, but this one puts it to shame. The best songs on the cd, in my opinion, are Ouverture/Ramsani, Ulysse, High Bar, Taiko, and Finale. The haunting vocals on Ulysse and Finale are so chilling, they make you want to cry!

    5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing..........2002-04-09

Words alone cannot fully express this CD. To listen to Mystere is to embark on a journey throughout myth. It is said the disk is based on Greek themes, and the hint of various melodies from around the globe can definitely be heard throughout. This is the Cirque du Soleil way, is it not? The perfect blend of music from all cultures: we have the Japanese Taiko Drums in "Taiko", Rock and Roll/Sax solos within "En Ville/Frisco" and beautiful, ominously powerful melodies during "High Bar". Indeed, this CD is sure to please any fan of Cirque du Soleil - old or new - as it has a bit of every culture in it without being so 'out there' as to be annoying.

The vocals are outstanding and the musicians are absolutely amazing. To think that they do this twice a night, five times a week with this much quality is mind-numbing. The level of skill and deftness with which the overall CD is performed is enough to make any aspiring musician practice harder.

In all, this is a great CD to listen to after a long day to relax and energize yourself. The beat is steady, the words enchanting and journey timeless.

...Easily one of the best CD's Cirque du Soleil has produced...

4 out of 5 stars Just Like a Buffett Concert.......2004-12-08

This CD will give you the same vibe as a Buffett concert. Great music combined with middle-age white people drunk out of their minds and puking all over the bathroom. I get tickets every year.

3 out of 5 stars Too Much The Same.......2004-08-09

Jimmy redoes what he has done so well in the past; but enough is enough. The parrot heads seem to like the endless supply of uptempo Jimmy; I like him when he's a bit more creative and can be listened to in a quiet room rather than in a smokey bar.

4 out of 5 stars I love his live stuff!.......2004-07-14

Okay, I want to start off by saying that I did not give this album 4 stars because of performance, it's because of the disc itself. There is absolutely no problem with this performance. It was obviously an amazing crowd. His choice of songs was almost perfect, too. My only problem with it is this disc doesn't combine the tracks together like most live albums, they have a gap which takes the fun out of it being a live album. Also, if you're like me, you like to listen to live albums pretty loud but this one has a volume ceiling on it. I just can't seem to get it as loud as I can other live albums.

      3 out of 5 stars The Gaps.......2004-06-02

I too purchased "live in Vegas" and was disappointed with the quality. I have Mansfield and Auburn which are perfect. My first copy of Vegas had parts on the first disc that would drop out. There were however, no gaps between the songs. I went to exchange my first copy and was annoyed to hear the pauses between the songs. I thought that this disc was messed up too so I returned it for a third copy and it too has gaps between the songs. I also noticed that the recording level on the two vegas sets were lower than my set with the drop outs during the songs. I guess I will just have to settle.
