5 out of 5 stars Classy, classic sci-fi adventure.......2007-07-20

JOURNEY to the CENTER of the EARTH is classic(Jules Verne)sci-fi that's classy to the max. JAMES MASON(of WALT DISNEYS's 20,000 Leagues under the Sea,CATAIN NEMO fame)is the Professor. He stalwartly leads an expedition comprised of radiantly beautiful Arlene Dahl;an appealingly heroic Pat Boone;Herculean Peter-the-big-guy,Ronson;& the big guy's existential(and LATER tasty for bad guy,Thayer David)cool-as-a-moose pet DUCK,Gertrude.
THE JOURNEY is an action/danger packed Quest, full of beautifully photographed surprises~ Sequences from Carlesbad Caverns in New Mexico,USA are spectacular;as ls the gigantic Alice-in-Wonderland Mushroom Forest and eerie, phosphorescent kalaidescope pools).Battles between ferociously nasty dinosaurs(trick/interposed live-action blow-up photos of muy feo Australian Dragon lizards)are climactic. As is the ordeal of survival in magnetically-induced storms on a vast,center-of-the-Earth sea which culminates in discovery of The Lost City of Atlantis.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH is a film of highest production and entertainment value. The story is well-paced and suspenseful. The cast...again and again...is ingratiatingly appealing.SFX,for the time, were wonderous;they are still servicably good to excellent. This,as has been observed,is superior, unreservedly recommended FAMILY adventure comprising what was once best in Hollywood spectacles...and still is.

5 out of 5 stars Journey to the Center of the Earth.......2007-07-04

My son was so interested in seeing this movie after seeing the book at a Doctor's office. He has been thrilled with the quality and the story!

4 out of 5 stars In the spirit of Jules Verne.......2007-06-29

Collectively, Verne's novels were called "Les voyages extraordinaires", and this film, whatever licenses have been taken with the source, aspires to that. While the prelude to the journey is too long (we even have to endure Pat Boone croon a tuneless number), once we've plunged into the Earth, the film takes on an air of wonderment.

Cast chemistry contributes in a big way. James Mason, a brooding but stout leader. Pat Boone, surprisingly effective as an eager student (but not so successful as a Scotsman). Arlene Dahl, a ravishingly beautiful damsel who is sage and sane and only distressed when she really really needs to be. Real-life Icelander Peter Ronson, a tall man's man -- who loves his pet duck. Gravelly-voiced American (believe it or not) Thayer David, pure villainy.

While the special effects are often praised, I think much of the credit for the wonder and awe of the film goes to the elaborate sets.

And I doubt that Bernard Herrmann had a better vehicle for his mystical, sonorous music.

Add the final ingredient: a script that mixes fun and excitement with the fantastical.

Blend thoroughly and you have an extraodinary voyage for the teenager in you.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Adventure Movie of All-Time!!!.......2007-06-17

I am in my late 20's and I saw this for the first time when I was a young teenager. It captivated my imagination in so many ways and after viewing it repeatedly within the last few years after getting it on DVD I have to say it completely stands the test of time. I wouldn't change a single thing about the characters, actors chosen to play them, the plot, the special effects, anything. It all fits together perfectly, like in the same way Goonies and Ghostbusters did. Plus the soundtrack is phenomenal. Every time I hear an excerpt from it I get sucked back into the movie. It's perfect music for the journey.

The screenplay is excellent. It has the right amount of scientific basis, comedy spots here and there, intelligent lines, logical dialog, and the best possible way of telling a story about a journey to the center of the Earth. I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure the center of the earth is molten and extremely hot and not possible to get to. So the story in general cannot actually happen in real life. But that doesn't matter. the story here is presented in the best possible way that it *could* happen if it were a possibility. And presented in a way most people would actually want it to happen.

The reason I love older adventure movies more than newer ones is because they didn't have computer effects to use so they made every thing, which in turn gave it a more tangible quality and made it more real. Most of the special effects completely hold up. The lizards seem real, the ocean scenes and the journey down all seem extremely real.

It's a top notch production all the way through. Every now and then the stars align on a film and it surely did with this one. I wouldn't change a thing about it. I like it even more than "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" which is another Mason classic.

If you haven't seen it then without a doubt get it. It's great for the whole family. Nothing is excessive or would limit any age groups.

5 out of 5 stars Classic film.......2007-05-18

This movie is a classic and should be in the library of any Jules Verne fan!

1 out of 5 stars Why Bother?.......2007-04-15

The only reason I bought this CD was because I spotted it for .99 cents as I was looking for a copy of the Bernard Herrmann CD for the original. I saw the TV movie in question and thought very little of it, so the soundtrack was even less on my mind.

I figured for .99, since I was buying something else at the same time, why not?

Rareley will you find a more generic, synth and orchestra score of such litte interest that even a second listening fills you with indifference.

About the only stand-out moment in the score is the faux-tribal chanting -which, while it sounds embarassingly stereotypical, at leasts livens up the otherwise drab proceedings.

This CD might be useful if you want to add background music to your home movies or a PowerPoint presentation, but it hardly merits shelf-space in anyone's permanant collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Cute! Tuneful!.......2004-04-15

I have always loved Jules Verne stories. I remember reading when this production was touring in the midwest. So I was very excited to get the CD. I was very pleased. The author did a great job adapting a very difficult story and the songs fit the characters (some from the book, some he created) beautifully. The standout has to be "A Woman of Science" sung by Shavonne Convoy. I think that the orchestration, while probably a synthesizer (or two) really fit the material well. The CD has a big sound and every song is charming. I find myself humming the songs all the time.

2 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment.......2003-10-05

I bought this because I thought it would be fun to hear a music based on JTTCOTE! Also, the only review on here said it was good and had been nominated for awards...what I didn't notice was that the WRITER had posted the review!!
Don't get me wrong this isn't a total waste of money but it comes close!! For a start it's only 23 minutes long!! Secondly there are only 10 tracks and two of those are reprises!!
I will admit that I like the sound of the title track, plus 'No Adventure in my life' and 'Woman of Science'...but unfortunately there is no orchestra just, what sounds like, a synthesizer!! All in all the lack of orchestra and short duration make this musical a disappointment and very unprofessional sounding!! Especially for the money!!!
I bought this at the same time as Frankenstein The Musical which was only $6.99 - and worth every penny!!!!

5 out of 5 stars CUTE MUSICAL!.......2000-01-19

This is a really fun musical version of the Jules Verne Book. "A WOMAN OF SCIENCE" is my favorite song---sort of like a Disney Villian kinda thing. The rest of the score is also fun, there's a very pretty title song, and a great ballad called "SUN AND THE MOON AND THE STARS"--I highly reccomend this album!

    5 out of 5 stars A Rick Wakeman Masterpiece.......2007-05-08

My mother introduced me to the music of Yes, and subsequently, Rick Wakeman. This album was her first recommendation, so I picked it up. Being a fan of the original Jules Verne book, I looked forward to hearing Rick's musical take on the story. Needless to say, I was not disappointed; each piece of music is well worth the price of admission. The added narration really adds to the overall production. This would certainly be a great album to witness live. One interesting note is that there are actually four tracks on the CD (not two, as the listing indicates).

4 out of 5 stars Blast from the Past.......2007-01-12

I've always enjoyed this album, its my progressive rock roots. Tells you a story. Can be a little hokey with some of the Lyrics the choir sings in the "Battle", but just sit back and enjoy it for what it is

5 out of 5 stars Journey With Rick Wakeman.......2006-11-03

"Journey to the Centre of the Earth" is a 40 minute or so live performance of a piece of music based around and inspired by Jules Verne's original novel. It's composed by and features Rick Wakeman, the keyboardist of Yes. It's a really interesting and enjoyable listen, I think.

The performance features an orchestra, a choir, a couple of lead vocalists, a narrator and of course a whole lot of keyboards and effects. There's Moog, there's clavichord, there's electric piano, all of which Rick plays in that unique, wiggly way of his. He has a way of evoking images with sound, which really helps make this recording special. I love the burbling synthesizers that illustrate the bubbling water from the rock, and I love the uneasy sound of the choir evoking the sound of a heaving ocean on the second side, for instance. Getting everyone to play a bit of "The Hall of the Mountain King" as the volcanic Mt Etna erupts is pretty cool too, and kind of funny. There's a lot of moments like this which are really fun to listen to.

As for the lyrics and narration, the wording isn't exactly "high" literature, but it's all definitely got Rick's personality on it. I can just picture him writing the lyrics on his sheet music by the piano.

"By horse, by rail, by land, by sea, our journey starts..."

Being a live recording, there's a couple of imperfections, but that's all right by me. I'd recommend this to Yes and progressive rock fans and lovers of a good story. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on the sequel "Return to the Centre of the Earth", an album recorded in 1999 which picks up where this album, and Jules Verne, left off.

5 out of 5 stars TIMELESS MASTERPIECE !!!!!!!!.......2005-08-08

And the one that introduced me to sinfo-prog rock in the first place.I remember how astonished I was at the use of synthesizers,at the majestic orchestrations,at the excellent narrator's dramatization, and of course at the incredible performance of all of the musicians, taking me into a musical journey into one of the books that inflienced me the most as a child,J.Verne's.The sound was incredible for an early
70's album.I've owned this wonder in 4 track cartridge, cassette,lp,and now on cd.I hope I won't be able to wear it down like I did with the other formats. And next month I'm buying the DVD in spite of all the bad reviews.LONG LIVE THE MASTER !!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing is good for everybody.......2005-02-03

As said our collegue J.B.Fresno, from Madrid, Spain, this tune isn't a masterpiece of the classical music, as himself tought when was 17. I really appreciate to know he become a grow person but I can't resist to say that the most of the 17yo person would like to find sounds that says something to their ears, sounds that merge with their youth... and, I'd like to go far: a lot of people that, as my self (i'm 46), is older than 17 like to hear and feel tunes like that... If you wanna to hear a good rock and roll music, don't miss that! And if you like to hear classical music, well, don't miss Amazon's index about that.

    5 out of 5 stars A 'Journey' Revisited.......2001-07-14

First of all, the other review is true: it IS a re-release of the second disc of a Greatest Hits compilation released in 1994. However, disc one were Rick's versions of Yes tracks, and disc two were new versions of SOME of his solo tracks.(I say SOME beceause there is a ton of stuff of his.) The bulk of it is a new version of 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'(albeit instrumental only), and three others. Personally, I didn't care so much for the first one, to tell the truth. I liked the second disc much more. I had the Greatest Hits, but traded it in at Streetlight Records.I made a copy of disc two on tape, but something happened to it ... to make a long story short, it's nice that there's another version that's just the Rick solo tracks. So, taken like that it's a cool disc.
