Texas guitar-slinger Johnny Winter bares some of his deepest roots on his first album of new recordings since 1998. In a rare turn on acoustic slide six-string, he performs fellow Lone Star State legend Hop Wilson's "That Wouldn't Satisfy" with the sweet, lovely simplicity of a street corner singer. Then Winter plugs in for Lazy Lester's stomping primal rocker "Sugar Coated Love." But after years of health issues, Winter, who's 60, has lost the roaring vocal authority of his earlier albums and no longer takes dizzying solos at jet speed. Instead, he makes all the notes of a tune like "Lone Wolf" count, whether he's crafting a slide melody or literally howling. "The Monkey Song," a playfully sleazy double-entendre number, proves his sense of humor is intact. And harmonica ace James Montgomery, who recently joined Winter's band, provides perfect accompaniment to Winter's vocal and guitar lines. Ex-Stevie Ray Vaughan keyboardist Reese Wynans also contributes to this overdue addition to Winter's dynamic blues-rock legacy. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars JOHNNY'S BACK!!!.......2007-01-12

I just saw Johnny Winter, in concert TONIGHT (1/11/2007) on his first date of his 2007 tour and this man shreaded. He had his legendary chops and his legendary "Johnny growl." I've loved Johnny Winter since the early 70's and I am sad to say that I had almost forgotten about this blues master. I've been playing guitar, full-time professionally for thirty years and after seeing Johnny play tonight I don't feel like ever picking my guitar up again. Yes, I was a little worried when I saw his band walk him out and help him sit down to play. But, once he put his fingers on the strings he was the same Johnny Winter I had always known and loved. Age has taken its toll on his body, but his fingers were lightening fast his lick blisteringly tasteful and when they brought out his legendary Gibson Firebird and pinky slide he WAS in his prime. The man is a master and untouchable as a blues guitarists. Seeing Johnny tonight made Stevie Ray Vaughn (God rest his soul, and he would probably agree with me if he saw Johnny tonight) still in his adolescent days of working towards blues master. Johnny Winter rocked Virginia Beach tonight and defied everything you saw in his diminished physical state. No one can touch Johnny Winter today as a blistering blues guitarist, he was the total master of guitar tonight and created an energy that I've never seen matched by another blues guitarist with the stamina that Johnny possessed tonight.

2 out of 5 stars Life is Hard, and then you die.......2006-12-28

As the fantastic song title above indicates, life IS hard, and it's been hard on Johnny Winter. It is definitely beginning to show. I play guitar and sing, too, and an arrhythmic heart keeps me off stage a lot. What a drag. Well, I hear Johnny has a few health issues, and I only mentioned my own in order to be able to say that he sounds on this album a little like I feel, sometimes. His voice has weakened quite a bit, and thinned out, but as with the change in Bob Dylan's voice, he actually sounds more musical, sweeter, now, than before. So the burning glory is gone, and the blistering solos are replaced with very carefully phrased and finished riffs. And, yes, a little lacking in energy at some points. The Monkey Song is almost too skanky to be believed. Hell, Johnny, they're all shaved on the internet these days anyway, and that's probably as far as some lame old guy like you gets, right?
Sorry. This guy, doing Rock& Roll hootchie-Koo with Rick Derringer back in 1970, could blow walls down.
I guess this is the blues.

5 out of 5 stars Still Alive and playing the Blues.......2006-09-14

I am amazed at some of the comments posted here. Johnny is 60 plus and not in real good health, I seen him last weekend 9-10-06 at a Blues Fest, and it was sad to see him in such rough condition, but he still has the heart and the soul of a Bluesman and even though he is not what he was 30 years ago, he can still play that old guitar. He is probably the greatest Electric Blues Guitarist that has ever lived. And he has trully lived the life of a Bluesman. I really doubt that his health will ever get any better, but I hope that he keeps playing, recording and showing up at gigs when he's up to it. This cd was nomanated for a Grammy!!! That did not happen because the cd sucked, it happened becasue it is a great collection of songs. When JW was young there was not the kinda of money in music that there is today. Even Mick does not perform like he use to, Rod Steward just doesn't have that old power that he had once, he's even switched to a softer sound. But at least JW is still true to his music, playing and writing Blues, maybe in a little differant vein than he use to,but its still pure Johnny. I wish him all the best and look forward to his next release.

1 out of 5 stars amatuer effort.......2006-04-13

this is definetely a low water moment for mr winter with this poorly pieced together album.these songs were recorded over a span of 3 years with johnnys poor health slowing down the project. there is nothing good to recommend on this album. poor choppy guitar playing, vocals that are off key and off timing and a baffling selection of songs.hopefully he will get better at a future date and have the chance to release something that is actually entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Go See Johnny In Person.......2005-12-19

First off, I do not own this CD. I do own all of Johnny's original releases (no collections) and I have listened to the Amazon sampler of this CD. I most likely will buy it at some point. If you are looking for Johnny in prime form buy; Johnny Winter, Progressive Blues Experiment, Second Winter (Legacy Edition), Serious Business, Third Degree, Let Me In and Hey Where's Your Brother.

Now, to the point. If you have the chance to see Johnny on his current tour, GO!!! I saw Johnny last night at the Granada Theater in Dallas, TX. The last time I saw Johnny was 30 years ago when he had Floyd Radford along for the ride. Johnny played more quality blues guitar last night then he did when I saw him in his rock n' roll hay day. Sure, there were no nine minute "It's My Own Fault" solos and what he did play and sing was visually an effort for him, but it was excellent. He was enjoying himself and his voice was in good form, much better than this CD would have you think. Johnny played several cuts off this CD as well as a couple of Muddy Waters and Freddie King tunes and closed with "Johnny Guitar" all played on his Laser. The encore was out of this world! The curtain openned up and Johnny was sitting their with his Firebird and that all too familiar shiny steel tube on his finger! He played, "Mojo Boogy", "She Likes To Boogy Real Low" and closed with, "HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED", the crowd went nuts!!!

Johnny at 60 plus, STILL plays the blues better than most ever did at any point in their career. Do not miss Johnny if you get the chance.

Buy this CD, all of Johnny's orginal work is worth every penny.
