Another volume of the various artists CD compilations put out on the Bacchus Archives label that features unknown psych, garage and R&B bands from the mid to late '60's. Tunes here that had me taking notice and tapping my toes were tracks by the Dave Clark Five-like Bram Rigg Set, The Other Four, The Noblemen, The 7 Dwarfs, Sons Of Adam, Bittersweets and the Monkees-like Glass Candle. What I'd like to know is WHO are these great bands and how come most (if not all of us) have never even remotely heard of any of them? Not even one! An absolute must-have.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Garage.......2007-01-20

Although composed of a series of (not even) one hit wonders, the music on this album is amazingly good. In some of the songs, you can hear shades of more famous sixties groups. If you can accept that, there's not a bad song on it. The music is upbeat and quite entertaining. The CD sounds like it was recorded from vinyl; you can actually hear the pops in a few places. I prefer the selections on this album to those I've heard on other compilations, such as Nuggets (but it's just a matter of taste).

4 out of 5 stars 'Fuzz,Flaykes&Shakes,Volume 1:Sixty Miles High'-Various Artists (Bacchus Archives).......2006-06-11

Another well assembled 18 track collection of some virtually unknown / unheard of late '60's psych, garage and pop bands. Another fun-filled volume from the Bacchus label. Fun to listen to on your car CD player. Tunes that are sure to have you giving this disc repeated spins are Glass Sun-"I Can See The Light", Countdown 5-"Speculation", The Odyssey-"Little Boy,Little Girl" and The Society's "High&Mighty". Well worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Part of a balanced breakfast........2000-06-13

While it holds a very skinny candle to the "Nuggets" collection from Rhino, this delightful CD is perfect for the '60s music junkie looking for buried treasure. The eighteen (not nineteen) featured tracks are not to be heard on the radio, and in the case of "Day-tyme, Night-tyme" by the Band of Wynand or "Dialated Eyes" (sic) by the Gregorians, that is a pity, if not a tragedy. To sweeten the deal, entertaining and informative liner notes are included. This CD is rather difficult to locate, so I commend the good folks at Amazon.com for offering it here.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Tantalizing tid-bits from the '60s.......2003-07-26

Tony the Tyger scooped up a heaping spoonful of assorted flavors to satisfy even the most raging appetite for '60s garage goodies.
The best cuts on the 17 track sampler for my taste are the wild R&B stompers with snarly put-downs: "Is That Your Halo" - The Rock Shop. The jangly lament "I Don't Want To See You" by His Majesty's Coachmen is alright. Trojans of Evol on name alone should intrigue anyone who enjoyed their final scorch-out with compressed distortion on "Through The Night", here's the half as cool B side "Why Girl". Then wait for it... the wild freak-out on bass and organ, "The Man" from an unreleased acetate by The Canterbury Fair. This is the one worth the price of admission. Hard to believe this one slipped through the cracks, it's lot more worthy than their pleasantly psych "Song On A May Morning", as much as I do like that one. "Something's Wrong" by The Veil has a good fast tempo and almost goes flying off the tracks. "That's Why" by Apperson Jackrabbit almost sounds like a swipe of the Jefferson Airplane Takes Off guitar sound, but with L.A. suburbian cool teenage frustration at the wheel.
The Whats New shoot the fuzz protest works with "Up So High" - again, another price of admission keeper kut. Joey Welz & the Time Machine "Caught By Love" has a nice spooky feel, though the patent hooks laid down are well within familiar territory.
The American Way - "Lady Dressed In Black" is a good psychedelic ballad, then there's a revved up Raiders style rocker -"Help Me, Help You" and an equally good psych weeper "I Cry" - a pair of rarities by Sonny Villegas. The Menaces (led by Dennis) were barely in their teens when they recorded the decent "If You Want Me" with Byrdsy guitar, and the set ends with the band that started the CD, a very psych guitar solo in the Stonesy "State Of Your Mind" by The Rock Shop. Several others I haven't mentioned include the well compiled title track by The Blues Company "Experiment In Color", and a few others. I give this about an 8 on a scale of 1-10. Well worth getting.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, but............2007-04-09

Not a bad garage rock compilation, but don't get it for the Merseybeats USA (pre - NRBQ) cut, because it was left off the CD at the last minute for licensing reasons (the band wouldn't agree to license it). It is NOT on this CD. The rest of it, though, is above-average.

5 out of 5 stars Breakfast for the Ears.......2002-09-27

After hearing most of the tracks on an internet garage radio station, I knew I was going to buy this CD. If you like the Nuggets, Pebbles, and Back From the Grave compilations, consider this as your next purchase. There's a great mix of snotty punk, fuzz, psych and harmony here from the first track through the last. Standout bands include The Preachers, The Satisfied Minds, The Camel Drivers, The Mike Jones Group, and Bedforde Set.
