Album Description

The road to success is not an easy one - but some handle its hurdles better than others. In 2001 Jimmy Eat World was a widely adored but criminally underappreciated band capable of drawing capacity crowds all over the world, but unable to find a record deal to their liking. Having just been unceremoniously spit out of the major label machinery, the band opted to record a new album entirely on its own dime and let labels come a-calling. The gambit more than paid off, with the resultant Bleed America (later re-titled Jimmy Eat World), yielding the hits "The Middle" and "Sweetness," and ultimately selling over 1.4 million copies in the U.S. By the time two full years of touring had wound down, they'd made triumphant breakthroughs everywhere from Saturday Night Live, being nominated for an MTV Video Music Award and topping, "Best Of" lists at Blender, Alternative Press, SPIN, USA Today, People and Rolling Stone to name a few. Not bad for a little band from Mesa! , Arizona. But then came the problem once all your rock dreams come true, what do you do for an encore? The band's new album, Futures, is the answer to that question. It's a sprawling, gorgeous, heavy-yet-quiet epic with songs ranging from ambitious hard rock to epic ballads. With the hard driving first single "Pain" kicking off the campaign to the beautifully constructed follow up single "Work," Futures is perhaps the best sounding record in Jimmy Eat World's career.

5 out of 5 stars Every Song You Can Listen To...........2007-05-10

Im not 13 just didnt want to make an account...im 21 and very much into music.

1. Futures- *Single* more of the pop side to J.E.W. It just has a great opener and lyrics are sweet. Very catchy song. This song will draw people to this cd. 10/10

2. Just Tonight . . .- Total change from "Futures" with a faster pace song. I love listening to this song when driving or working out. The middle guitar riff is sweet. Great Song 10/10

3. Work- *Single* hmm I liked the song when I first heard it but just kinda got bored with it. Its not a bad song but just no alot to it. 7/10

4. Kill- Kinda have the same feeling as I do with "Work" but not as bad. Good song and love the lyrics. 8/10

5. The World You Love- Think this was kinda a filler song. I still love it though. Catchy song...cant say anything bad about it. 8/10

6. Pain- *Single* Tied for the best song on the album. Fast paced and just rocking. I love it. Lyrics are written very well and chorus is awesome. You will love this song. Guitar riff is really good. 10/10

7. Drugs or Me- What a change from "Pain"....nice slow song that fits good in the middle-bottom of this cd. Kinda a sad song when you listen to it. 9/10

8. Polaris- This is a yummy song. Its a hidden gem. If you just lay back and want to listen to some music play this song. Makes this cd very strong. 10/10

9. Nothingwrong- Back to rock!! Love the opener. very very catchy. 9/10

10. Night Drive- Lyrics are very well done. This song fits the album very well. 9/10

11. 23- BEST SONG FROM JIMMY EAT WORLD!!! I love this song. I listen to it everyday and never gets old. Its long but thats what makes it so good. 11/10

5 out of 5 stars Man this is still good.......2007-03-19

I thought they were going to suck this time around but the music is solid. How many times have we all acted like "nothing wrong", I love lyrics with a minor philosophical tint. The chorus in "night drive" is cool. I'm sure they'll be some purists out there complaing, as always, but this is good stuff and a great effort.

4 out of 5 stars over-production.......2007-03-08

This is a perfect example of how an over-production can botch an album. If you decide to pick this up, I highly suggest you get the special edition version because it comes with the demo disc of the entire album. This demo disc is by far superior than the actual release. I am giving this album four stars because it is not quite as great as Clarity, and I am basing my rating on the demo disc. If I had not picked up the special edition, it would get a much lower mark.

5 out of 5 stars Rocking harder.......2007-01-18

This CD isnt as upbeat as thier last album.. in fact its much more somber. BUT, that doesnt mean that they arnt good. THIS CD IS THE BEST I have EVER heard as a whole. Each song individually rated should be like 4-5 stars... its so good. MUST have for any collection

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-01-09

My kids and I love this CD...there is only so many songs they can hear from it, but they request me to play them all the time....

Chick Corea is a musician of extraordinary abilities and sometimes maddening shifts in artistic perspective. On Past, Present & Futures, he returns to the trio format that gained him some early renown in 1968 with Now He Sings, Now He Sobs. This time, instead of Roy Haynes and Miroslav Vitous, he's got drummer Jeff Ballard and bassist Avishai Cohen. Like most Corea sidemen, they are gifted players, though lacking the personality of someone such as Stanley Clarke or Barry Altschul. Past, Present & Futures only partially fulfills its title. Corea rows into the mainstream, drawing from Fats Waller's jazz standard "Jitterbug Waltz" to original compositions that owe more to Chick's post-bop roots than to his avant-garde or fusion strains. While much of the music is extremely competent and buoyantly played, only a few tracks lift off, such as "Dignity," with its off-center melancholy, and improvisations that take some pieces deeper. On "Chelsea Shuffle" a hard-bop homage to his old stomping grounds in Chelsea, Massachusetts, you can hear the Horace Silver soul-groove sound that was influencing Corea at the time. Every few years, people think Chick Corea has lost it, and every few years Chick does an album that shows that he may not be on the bleeding edge anymore, but he hasn't lost a thing. --John Diliberto

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's all about the tunes...death to standards!.......2006-10-07

What I have always loved about Chick is his interest in formal structure. He rarely composes "heads" just so he can get on to the blowing, but through-composes most of his songs, which gives the music wonderful depth and breath. And of course, what seperates Chick from anyone is his rhythmic sense. This session crackles with energy and passion - it's not just another "white guy" jazz trio designed for sleep inducement and 'abstract' reinventions of standards. And thank god he echews playing "standards." Can anyone really stomach another record by anyone that covers jazz tunes written 50-60 years ago? My exhortation to new jazz artists - smash the busts of the hallowed giants and compose, compose, compose!!!

5 out of 5 stars Chick's Still Innovative.......2005-09-26

Chick Corea established himself as a genius jazz musician a long time ago. He has recorded several albums that are regarded as especially innovative, such as Now He Sings Now He Sobs, Light as a Feather, Three Quartets, etc. I think whether or not this album belongs in that category is a debateable; it really depends on how influential it is on musicians, but I would not be surprised if it eventually becomes an album like that.

Chick Corea seems to have been going for this sound for a while, with albums like Akoustic Band, but I think he achieves it with better success here. Some of the compositions here are unlike any other jazz I have ever heard. Songs like "Fingerprints" and "Chelsea Shuffle" have a ton of rhythmic punches (in the case of the blues "Fingerprints," the punches are the main theme), and incredible group interplay is present here, with many cases of piano/bass doubling the same line in the composition (other tunes that do this include "Dignity," "Revolving Door," and "Cloud Candy"). The songs on this album seem to require a very precise group interplay, and the musicians pull it off beautifully.

The sound of this album is also quite different from most of his other ones; the atmosphere here is very light with lots of space and emphasis on higher notes. It reminds me of classical music, particularly impressionism, and it also reminds me of Bill Evans's approach, but the songs themselves are very unlike anything Evans would play. Chick also features interludes between solos on this album, such as "Cloud Candy," "Dignity," and "Rhumba Flamenco." It think ultimately it is his emphasis on group interplay and treating each instrument as having a part of the melody (rather than doing a standard jam-session type of arrangement) that makes this album really stand out and work well.

The album is mostly originals with one standard: "Jitterbug Waltz" by Fats Waller. However, Chick's treatment of this song is no different from the rest of the material on this album; group interplay and delicate touches. If I never heard the tune before, I'd think it was one of Chick's on this album. It is a very impressive arrangement of this song.

Standouts on this album include the incredibly catchy and punchy "Fingerprints," "Dignity" with its delicate approach and amazing use of space and repeating bass lines throughout the head and the solos (similar to something off Three Quartets, but not in atmosphere), the bluesy and swinging "Chelsea Shuffle," and the Latin and rhythmic "Rhumba Flamenco."

It is awesome to hear that Chick Corea is still trying out new ideas for jazz. Often, jazz artists innovate once and then spend the rest of their careers just exploring those innovations rather than moving on. I think Chick has the right idea in trying to push the music to places it hasn't been yet; it is albums like this that show me that jazz may not be dead yet. I recommend it to all Chick fans; you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An instant classic.......2005-02-10

Of the ten or so Chick Corea albums I know, this is my favorite. It's great to hear an established jazz great doing his best work now, rather than just repeating himself. Every one of Corea's compositions on this album is outstanding--tight and carefully composed, using artful Latin rhythms, passionate melodies, and startling dissonances. This album sounds less improvised and more planned than many of Corea's recordings, but that's all to the good when the composer is as powerful as Corea. As other reviewers have mentioned, Aviahai Cohen's bass work is astonishing, recalling the intimate connection that Scott LaFaro had with Bill Evans. If you like Chick Corea, you've got to hear this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent trio playing.......2002-07-19

Corea's recent acoustic ensemble playing is a welcome return for those of us who fondly remember his early recordings, and this disc is a very good portrayal of Corea at his acoustic and traditional best.

His sidemen on this recording- Cohen and Ballard- aren't as well known as Pattitucci and Weckl (from the "Akoustik" album) nor do they have chops quite as flashy, but I think this is the more musical, more lyrical album of the two. The "Akoustik" album was at its best when Corea was playing solo; here, the interplay between Corea and his sidemen is much more intimate, more communicative.

A fine recording of a fine performance.

5 out of 5 stars inventive and engaging.......2002-06-08

This has quickly become one of my favorite jazz records. Latin-flavored rhythms are always shifting and changing, demanding your attention. The performances are superb. This is really a showcase for Avishai Cohen, even more so than his own solo albums.

The three form one cohesive unit, it seems as though they are reading each others' minds - the interplay and development of musical ideas happens among the three of them as though every note were written down ahead of time, but it always sounds spontaneous.

This album grabbed my attention from the very beginning and didn't let go until the bitter end. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Album Description

John Gorka's most realised recording in a career of fine recordings, "Old Futures Gone" takes an intriguing look at our unexpected present and tomorrows. With fresh stylistic turns and band-driven gentle grooves, the sound remains pure Gorka...his voice, melodies and lyrics riding on infectious, well-conceived arrangements. Joining him on guest vocals are new folk artists Lucy Kaplansky and Alice Peacock and soul singer Kathleen Johnson.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Consistent John.......2005-10-13

If you like John Gorka music then you'll like this. It's that simple. John Gorka is very much like Sinatra. If you like Sinatra then you like all of his songs. I wish that other musicians and artists could recognize what they are exceptionally good at, enjoy it, expand from that base, and keep doing it, and doing it, and doing it.
I was painting my bedroom walls. It took me two days. I listened to this cd probably 9 times through. I didn't get sick of it. And that is a true testament, because if a cd can overcome being overplayed and still enjoyed then it is a keeper.

Nice work John. Keep churning out the songs....just like Frank did. And don't worry about your songs being too "down". We love it all...from Morningside.....to The one that got away.

Side note this CD has an obvious political, or social tone. But even if you disagree, and love war, or 'wars' then it is still good, because the songs are still great, his voice is still great, and it's beautifully Gorka.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2004-08-15

Have you ever listened to a CD, and then you had to listen to it again and again, pulling out the lyrics and examining them, then realizing this is one of the best collections of music you have heard in your life. This is what John Gorka does for me. If you have seen him play live you are more hooked!

The music is wonderful and so are the lyrics, stirring emotions deep in the heart.

Lyrics like, "There are doors that you walk through, that only swing one way. Once you cross the threshold, there's nothing words can say." Then his characteristic MMM...MMM...

or lyrics from "Always"..."I will always be lonely, it's what I'm going on about. Love is hope without doubt, hate is fear turned out."

or lyrics from "Shapes"..."Words are just the shapes that the heart moves through. On the way to finding out if whatever there is true."

and undoubtedly the best lyrics:

"We can learn from everyone
How to or not to be
But we can learn the most from those
Who think differently
Who think differently.

War makes war. It won't bring peace."

"The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice." Martin Luther King Junior

I'm also impressed because this CD is dedicated to the late Senator Paul Wellstone and wife Sheila.

One not only gets a sense that Gorka is a great and sensitive musician, he is also intensely politically aware. He has a message through his music that more should be tuned into in this day and age.

FIVE STARS!!

4 out of 5 stars I Didn't Know If I Needed This One.......2004-02-07

I wondered if I had moved on from John Gorka's music. It ocurred to me that perhaps I just didn't listen to "that type of music" anymore. Then I saw him play at a local pub. I marveled at his guitar playing. I was envious of his deep, rich baritone vocals. I was moved at his ability to write songs that were so easy for me to relate to. I plunked down the money for this album. By the time I drove home, I was singing along to "Dogs & Thunder" and "Always". It's true that there's not much different here. There is a bit more of a pop sheen to most of the songs. Kind of a melancholy James Taylor vibe going on. I would submit to you that it's okay that John is John and we need to know he's there from time to time. A lot of us feel a little less alone that way.

5 out of 5 stars Old Voice Still There ..........2003-12-19

Okay, look, we don't buy Gorka to dance to, right? (Well, except for a few cuts on "Temporary Road".) Buy this collection if you remember Gorka's original boomy deep voice and you want it updated with his continually maturing lyrics and without the pessimism. If you're a first time Gorka, get the "Temporary Road" CD first. This is overall a bit slow and contemplative, except for 'Make Them Crazy' (my fave), maybe 'Shapes', and 'War Makes War'. This CD is a showcase for his fabulously dark deep vocals and is backed up by a variety of singers including the always lovely Lucy Kaplansky. At times a bit repetitive and silly (his trademarks after all), this is all very nice music.

I am so thrilled to find a CD remastering of this incredible 1977 release. So many people only know Mr. Bacharach's big hits, but beneath all that are a slew of unbelievably beautiful recordings that are absolutely stunning, haunting and sophisticated. GO...NOW...BUY!!

      5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2006-07-25

Splendid! I remember buying this record in the 80's in the soundtrack section of Coop City. This was one discovery. It is a sonic masterpiece. While in many ways it is very different from the 60's Bacharach stuff we are all used to, it is still uniquely-sounding in many many ways. Principally the playing is wonderful and the arrangements are beautiful. This really comes across in the instrumental Futures. OK this CD is really somewhat pricey but worth it!

4 out of 5 stars A long-lost "Sweet Soul" classic finally on CD........2006-09-09

The Futures were one of the most criminally underrated soul harmony vocal groups of the 1970s. Despite the greatness of their recordings, they failed to make it big. This 1975 release is deservedly viewed as a classic "Sweet Soul" album today although it went nowhere when originally released. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars IN THE BEGINNING:.......2006-06-21

This is first album by the Futures. I Played it until you can only here the grooves. So it was a pleasure to find it on Amazon.com. The songs: I Had A Dream. Love Lives On a Windy Hill. 90 Days. are all fantastic. The Futures started with a couple of singles before this album was made. The producers and writers on the album also wrote Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You a hit for Wilson Pickett. For the Futures. A great beginning.
