The Daredevil soundtrack provided a nice boost for this previously unknown quartet from Little Rock, Arkansas. Evanescence's songs "My Immortal" and the imposing "Bring Me to Life" are clear standouts in the film, mainly because they work so well with the dramatic, eerie undertones of the storyline. They reappear here on the band's debut, alongside a selection of similarly brooding tracks that evoke pensive artists like Tori Amos and the Cranberries. Vocalist Amy Lee has the kind of voice that can cause weeks of insomnia, but on songs like "Tourniquet" and "Haunted" she belies the music's sinister mood with evenhanded spirituality, thoughtfully letting some light shine through the tempest. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:
What you hope for if you've ever heard "Bring Me to Life".......2007-07-16
Indispensable.......2007-07-09
Light in the Darkness.......2007-07-03
"Bring Me To Life" is a stunning track on its own merit that could stand to lose the male pseudo rap-rock vocal yelling "Wake Me Up". (If you hear the demo version without the male vocal you will understand) I find it amusing that fans of bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit are buying this disc just on the basis of this track alone only to realize that the rest of the disc is moody, dark journey into the belly of various beasts. Nevertheless, Amy Lee has a haunting voice that layers beautifully over gothic rock/metal passages much like Tarja, Anneke, Christina, and Tori Amos. "Haunted" is a short, but remarkable track that allows Amy's vocals to breathe chilling words of despair. Just read the cold words to "Imaginary" and you wonder what exact demon tortures the writer's (Ben Moody) soul.
Overall, this disc is way too deep and thought provoking for its target audience. For those of us that have supported this style of music for years, please don't pass judgment against this disc until you have experienced the overall enchantment within its 11 tracks.
Amy Lee: The most underrated voice in music today.......2007-06-27
After selling 14 million copies worldwide and having a strong sophomore release with "The Open Door", I decided to give Evanescence another chance, returning to the debut album "Fallen". Sometimes it takes giving an album a second chance to make a first impression, and this time around I guess I was ready to embrace a band that was deemed as Goth Metal by the masses, but had a female vocalist that was able to help them rise above the all too familiar growl and dirge vocal efforts that usually fall into this category. Strong singles that stand out to me start out with Track 1 in "Going Under", which has a nice, simple guitar piece that has enough grind to stay down in the darker, more brooding sounds of this style of music. Track 6 is a tune called "Tourniquet" and has some eerie tones that help it start out before breaking into a clean, balanced attack of guitars and percussion. The overall structure of this album is great, and although I said there are several singles I like, I will just sum it up by saying there is something great about every song on this album.
What really is a selling point for me, however, is the lead singer Amy Lee. Amy's voice is poetic in deliverance of the songs and has a great overall emotional connection with the music, while at the same time her range allows her to add a lot of diversity to each and every song throughout the album. Overall you have a powerful set of music that rocks when it has to, and has some piano melody to add to the mix (Track 6 and 9 in particular) that I feel sets it apart from a lot of the genre's and classifications that people have been trying to put it in. If you are not much into newer "Nu-Metal" or what have you, but enjoy some of the progressive metal sounds and intricate approaches of such musicians, you just might find Evanescence to your liking. As stated before, it took me a few years to "come back" and discover them, but the wait was worth it and I look forward to any new releases this band has to offer.

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

Album Description
Clearly, Avenged Sevenfold have thrown away the rulebook. With Waking the Fallen, their sophomore effort for Hopeless Records, Aveneged Sevenfold (or "A7X") shatter preconceptions of punk and metal. Guitar World (March 2003) said the band "completely blur the line between metal and punk." The magazine also noted that the band would "be as comfortable on the Ozzfest stage as it is playing punk rock dives" A7X marks the beginning of a bold new direction for punk rock and metal. "At first, we were nervous about working with a producer because we didn't want our song structures changed. We didn't want to be formatted into three-minute, verse-chorus-verse songs. We told Mudrock that we want to sound epic, with big harmonies, have clean-sounding vocals like Iron Maiden's, and then go into heavy stuff like Pantera. We wanted to use all those influences and still make it work."Customer Reviews:
Waking the Fallen - what a title! And what an album!.......2007-07-17
Don't get me wrong - **I like this band** - but everyone has a misfire sometime. Now I get why people say COE was a sellout album.
Core's review.......2007-04-22
1. Waking the Fallen - just an intro song, still good though.
2. Unholy Confessions - Now this is one of my favs!!!! Its loud, fast, and heavy.... The chorus and verses combined are just awesome!!!
3. Chapter Four - This is probly my fav song on the album. I LOVE this one... Its about something from the Bible, too. Alot of their songs are.
4. Reminissions - Not my fav, but still real tight. The intro alone is enough to tell you its gonna be one awesome song.
5. Desecrate Through Reverence - This might be the hardest screaming song on the album, probly next to "I Won't See You Tonight Pt. II". Another good one. ROCK ON.
6. Eternal Rest - This song is a lil slower, but its got some of the fastest guitar work at the beginning.
7. Second Heartbeat - Similar to Eternal Rest in some ways, this song is slower, but the guitar at the END this time, is incredibly fast and blazing. This is one of my favs too.
8. Radiant Eclipse - This is my third fav on the album!!! I love the lyrics to this one, and Second Heartbeat. They really mean something.
9. I Wont See You Tonight Pt. I - This song is incredible, theres no words for it. This my second fav. I make a real strong connection to the lyrics and message.
10. I Wont See You Tonight Pt. II - Sort of a screaming version of Pt. I, this one is awesome too. Its the heaviest song on the album. Its like Part one and Part two really show the bands abilities with melodic singing in part one, and screaming in part two, and both combined almost sum up the entire album in a way.
11. Clairvoyant Disease - This is a good song too, its a little bit softer, its not my fav but its good.
12. And All Things Will End - This song is AWESOME... Not a lot of screaming, but its my fourth fav on the album. Also a great closing track. This song talks about the apocolypse, and how life will end, and really serves as a PERFECT prelude to the NEXT album, where the first song is "Beast and the Harlot", which talks about the apocolypse too. This is definitely one of the best on the album.
Overall, whether you like metal or not, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!! Its well worth it, and you wont be sorry. Unless of coarse you have no taste, but... that would be YOUR loss.
SYN IS GOD. I made a review for City Of Evil. THIS IS BEST.......2007-04-01
1. Waking The Fallen 10/10. Great intro. Actually the whole song is an intro. Its wonderful. Without this intro, the cd would have started in an awkward way.
2. Unholy Confessions 11/10. Great great great. The first A7X song i ever heard. This made me want to buy the cd. Awesome opening riff followed by a great chorus. One of my favorite A7X songs.
3. Chapter Four 12/10. BEST BEST BEST BEST. i don't know but i would say that this is the best song on the cd. Let that alone the whole 3 disc collection. Great song. Awesome chorus. ENDING IS THE BEST. Where has he gone wat have u done. U gotta listen to this. Beast solo.
4. Remenissions 7.5/10. Did not like this song. To much changing with the rhythm.
5. Desecrate Through Reverance 9/10. This was a good song. Luv the intro. The chorus wasn't that great, but the ending made up for it.
6. Eternal Rest 9/10. The intro was impressive. I luv the mixing of screamo and M. Shadows normal voice. Great song.
7. Second Heartbeat 10/10. Awesome. thats all i can say. Great Intro. Great Chorus. A very good song.
8. Radiant Eclipse 8/10. The intro was too long and too boring. I didn't enjoy the verses. No rhytym in the screaming. Everything is made up for all that in the Chorus. The chorus steals the whole song. Wonderful.
9. I Won't See You Tonight-Part 1 10/10. Sad song but great. Wonderful chorus and beautiful piano intro. Listen to when sad.
10. I Won't See You Tonight-Part 2 8/10. Totally ruined the "I WOn't see you tonight" series. I didn't like this song that much. The best part was when they took the chorus from Part 1 and mixed it in.
11. Clairvoyent Disease 9/10. Awesome chorus. Not the best verse.
12. And All Things Will End 9/10 Great mixture of music. Great song.
So its a good cd. Check out my review for City Of Evil. Its under SYN Is gOD. This is a great cd. I advise first time listeners to listen to City Of evil.
Amazing.......2007-03-19
especially when you're pissed off.
My review for every song is as folllows:
Waking The Fallen: 10/10
-Can't go wrong with an intro.
Unholy Confessions: 10/10
-Some of the strongest words I've ever heard. Especially
the line "I know it's hurting you, but it's killing me."
Chapter Four: 8.5/10
-Catchy verse and awesome chorus, however I'd expect Avenged Sevenfold
to be a bit more original than developing a song from the bible, which they tend to do often with songs like "Beast and The Harlot" or "Sidewinder."
Remenissions: 7.5/10
-I thought the verse riff was a bit misplaced because the riff
starts out all hard and then goes soft, so I thought it was a bit distracting.
Desecrate Through Reverence: 9.5/10
-Awesome hard track. You can feel his anger surge when he says "Spit in my face!" I love this song because it's about standing up to people.
Also, that harmonic through the verse really catches your ears.
Eternal Rest: 5/10
-Only song I didn't really care for. I thought it was a huge mess.
The solo was just a cluster of scales with no rhythm or melody, just insanity.
Second Heartbeat: 10/10
-Unbelievable song. The solo is absolute perfection, incredibly fast.
Really touchy song too, about losing friends and memories.
Radiant Eclipse: 9/10
-A true headbanger with vulgar lyrics. I love the anticipation for the first line of the song to come out: "Last night I was shot!"
I Won't See You Tonight: 10/10
-Most depressing song I've ever heard my entire life. Trust me, it really screws up your day the first time you hear it. However, amazingly powerful and irresistable.
I Won't See You Tonight Pt.2: 8/10
-I thought they could've done without this song on the album,
but still a very hard and good song.
Clairvoyant Disease: 8.5/10
-I thought the verse was a bit weak, but once the chorus comes in, it becomes a lot stronger.
And All Things Will End: 9/10
I enjoyed how the band mixed elements of metal and punk in this song; it adds a lot of interest.

Because he was gone by age 27, any opportunity to hear Gram Parsons in action is worthwhile. This record was recorded in front of a studio audience and broadcast live on WLIR in New York in March of 1973, a mere six months before Parsons's untimely death. Most of the material comes from his two solo albums (now collected on one CD) and his groundbreaking work with the Byrds and Burritos. Still, there are a few noteworthy additions to the canon, namely an urgent reading of Merle Haggard's "California Cottonfields," a roughshod '50s-rock medley, and the relatively obscure sacred tune "Country Baptizing," which was written by North Carolina fiddler Jim Shumate, a onetime member of both Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys and then Flatt & Scruggs's Foggy Mountain Boys. Parsons's touring band, the Fallen Angels, play with fire and looseness, especially Neil Flanz on pedal steel, and, of course, the wonderful Emmylou Harris harmonizes ever so passionately with the lead Fallen Angel. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

Amazon.com essential recording
Gram Parsons was one of the founders of country-rock and an artist whose influence can be heard in the music of such disparate performers as the Eagles, the Rolling Stones, Emmylou Harris, and Wilco. The two-disc, 46-song Sacred Hearts & Fallen Angels brings together tracks from every stage of his too-brief career, starting with his first group, the International Submarine Band, continuing through his period with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers in the late 1960s, and ending with two solo albums from the early 1970s. Parsons was a talented songwriter, but an erratic singer, and some of his performances are on the ragged side. But when he pulls it together, as he does on the mournful ballad "$1000 Wedding" or his transcendent duets with Harris on "Love Hurts" and the old Louvin Brothers gospel tune "The Angels Rejoiced Last Night," he justifies his reputation as a great country singer. Sacred Hearts & Fallen Angels is an excellent introduction to the work of the man who introduced country to the rock & roll world. --Michael SimmonsCustomer Reviews:
Incomplete.......2005-10-04
The great bulk of this 2-disc set is available on 4 discs: The 2fer edition of Gram Parsons Solo Records GP and Grievous Angel; Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo, The International Submarine Band's album, and Flying Burrito Bros' Gilded Palace of Sin.
I personally think it makes more sense to just go out and buy those discs than another (quite fine) comp. That way, you get (almost) everything, the way it meant to be heard.
An August Sunday morning.......2005-09-23
While my girlfriend drove the rental, I was in charge of the entertainment -- popping the CDs in and out. I decided on Gram, front-to-back, both discs -- from the boyish, sunny enthusiasm of the International Submarine Band to the sadly premature weariness of his last recordings. Maybe it was the gorgeous scenery as we snaked the hour or so toward the floor of the valley from the south gate. Or maybe it was the weather (perfect). Maybe it was a hyperactive rock'n'roller taking time to take it easy and give the songs a longer and better listen than before. Maybe it was just the notion of listening to Gram in California. But his music was the absolutely perfect soundtrack to an absolutely perfect Sunday morning. Simply beautiful music.
The only thing I can compare it to was the August Sunday morning my father drove us through North Carolina en route to Florida when I was 13, and the sun was just right, and every station on the radio was broadcasting some preacher or another. Except that listening to Gram in the cathedral of John Muir was a much more religious experience.
If you're not into history, at least listen to this collection if you love a sunny Sunday morning.
One Hot Burrito To Go, Please........2005-06-09
A nearly perfect compilation.......2005-03-28
1) The International Submarine Band's "Safe At Home" reissue on Sundazed contains tracks 1-6 on CD 1, as well as 4 more tracks, in excellent sound and packaging.
2) The Byrds' "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" CD on Legacy features lots of Gram vocals and involvement, including tracks 7 & 8 on CD 1, but you miss the Gram vocal take on "The Christian Life" that's on this 2xCD. The versions of "You Don't Miss Your Water" and "One Hundred Years From Now" are different, too. Although these (tracks 9-11 on CD 1 here) were on the Byrds' boxed set, they were just about the only worthwhile things on it that weren't on any of the Byrds' single CD reissues as bonus tracks - so this double CD gets you those 3 tracks quite easily.
3) The Flying Burrito Brothers "Hot Burritos!" 2xCD on A&M contains tracks 12-24 of CD 1 here, plus the first track of CD 2 . . . AND 29 more tracks, some of them excellent (though this 2xCD does a good job of capturing the best.)
4) The Reprise single CD reissue of Gram's two solo albums "GP" and "Grievous Angel" contains tracks 2-9 on CD 2, as well as tracks 13-22 on CD 2. It also has five tracks not included here. And the song "Return Of The Grievous Angel" is in a different mix here.
5) Gram Parsons & the Fallen Angels "Live 1973" CD on Rhino features tracks 10-12 on CD 2, plus nine tracks not here, in excellent sound.
6) This CD also features three outtakes from Gram's solo albums (tracks 20-22 on CD 2). These were previously available only on the import-only "Sleepless Nights," a compilation of these three tunes plus some late-period Flying Burrito Brothers country covers - the best of which are also on "Hot Burritos!" So this Rhino set is an easy way to get these three tracks without any dross.
That's it, with the exception of the recently unearthed "Another Side Of This Life: The Lost Recordings Of Gram Parsons 1965-1966," a surprisingly fine Sundazed release of previously undiscovered demos. Gram's talent is in full flower (he even performs a version of his own "Brass Buttons" roughly 8 years before its appearance on "Grievous Angel.") Most of the 18 tracks are covers of great songs by Fred Neil, Tim Hardin and other soulful folky types. It's much better than you'd think.
Enjoy!
Excellent, vital anthology..........2005-03-17
I wish I could explain what Gram Parsons did for me musically. He could very well be the reason why there is any good country music left at all. This anthology includes some of The Burrito Brothers stuff, Byrds, and plenty of old Fallen Angels tracks. This is one of those all-inclusive anthologies...I don't find myself wondering, "Why didn't they put such and such song on here?"
It is worth the money for this one if you're a fan of real country music.

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10
Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19
And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.
I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.
More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30
It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).
This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.
There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.
Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25
Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27
I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.
Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

A Great Collection of Songs.......2004-07-09
This lady truly is a one of a kind and deserves all the sucess she has gotten over the span of her career. She has finally opened my eyes to real, authentic country music. It's no wonder she has been around so long.
Contemporary country album of high quality.......2004-05-29
Elsewhere, there are plenty of fine songs beginning with Handful of dust, a mid-tempo song with a similar idea to the old sixties pop song, A hundred pounds of clay. Halfway down (another mid-tempo song), When fallen angels fly (an excellent ballad about a happy relationship) and Feeling good about feeling bad (about successfully getting over a broken relationship) are among the other great songs here.
This is Patty at her peak and should satisfy all her fans. While this is a contemporary album, it should appeal to all but the most die-hard traditional fans.

Distinct Style.......2006-11-05
My first introduction to VNV Nation.......2005-07-10
electronica/industrial trance outfit. Being a Delerium/Front Line Assembly fan I saw VNV as my own personal progression to explore new music and new sounds. I basically came across VNV Nation through Amazon.com reviews and picks and decided to buy this album to have a 'little taste' of what VNV is. I am now a fan, this is a style of music that one can dance to, chill out too as well as have as background music for a party with friends. All the tracks are interesting to listen too, the drums are worked in well with the synths and industrial beats. The vocalist is dark and mysterious and for this style of music that is a underpinning success. 'Joy', 'Solitary' and 'PTF2012' were the picks for me from this monumental album. And I now will look out for more VNV Nation releases.
If you like the works of Leeb & Fulber you will enjoy this from the anthem sounding VNV Nation.
Like Cutting Your Soul on a Blade of Darkness........2005-01-29
From the very start, humanity is on trial, and the evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of annihilation due to acts of extreme injustice and ultimate disorder. Hopelessness and cries of injustice scream through and pervade every moment of this intense spectrum of light and darkness that ranges from moments of defeat to times of glorious victory. Yet even in victory there is an impending emptiness and isolation, leaving the listener lost on the isle of doom and despair.
There are times when the listener questions the motives and meaning for the music, but overall, it's a glorious tribute to those who have fallen into the pit of injustice and unmerciful disaster. From "Chosen" all the way through to the untitled hidden track, the music soars and falls like a bird with clipped wings, like a parade of souls searching for answers that never come. In "Chosen," the almost hopeless journey begins with railing accusations of scourges on mankind and inhuman deeds of 'cataclysmic, unnatural, and unreasoning' destruction. From there, "Joy" fights back and shouts through with lyrics of defiance, posing such disturbing questions as, "Why do I love when I still feel pain; when does it end; when's my work done? Why do I fight? Why do I feel that I carry a sword to the battlefield?"
From there, the march continues with "Procession," a song of vengeance and warnings of judgment and resurrection, disturbing the listener with such violent lyrics as, "And we who were so scorned will always wish to make their end, our words to still their voice, out hands to break their worthless necks." It then continues with words of future triumph like, "One day we'll see our names in stone where fires burn, the great who silent stood among you, never praised nor never known." The epic continues as "Voice" takes it from there and defiantly shouts, "We are not the same! You will hear my voice!"
The darkness thickens with "Forsaken," an absolutely haunting song of sorrow that takes you on a lyric-less yet positively melodic journey into the abyss of human despair and loneliness. From the pit of desolation, the phoenix rises through the flames in "Ascension," an eight minute-plus voiceless refusal of surrender.
The height of the journey comes with "Honour," an unimaginably intense philosophical questioning, a trial within itself, with an accompanying moving beat. "Mothers stand in vain and cry" while the poet interrogates the by-now miserable listener with such propositions as, "Shall I recall when justice did prevail? No reason to be found why reason did fail." And just as the listener has confined himself permanently to realms of night, the poet sifts through the destruction and demands to "Stand your ground this is what we are fighting for, for our spirit and laws and ways! Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war! For heaven or hell we shall not wait! Shall I think of honour as lies? Or lament its aged, slow demise?"
Onward continues the journey with "Burnout," which seems almost like a burnout of reason, but thankfully we arrive at shore again with the epic "Solitary," which truly gives words of hope such as, "And if rain brings winds of change, let it rain on us forever. I have no doubts form what I've seen; I have never wanted more. With this line I'll mark the past as a symbol of beginning." This beacon of light is a welcome reprieve from the endless darkness that permeates the soul of this album, and we find ourselves even more thankful for the moments of remembrance and regeneration in the final three tracks "PTF2012," "Schweigeminute," which is a literal minute of silence given to the listener as a chance of reflection and contemplation, and the untitled hidden track.
Overall, this is an utterly spiritually crushing yet intellectually and morally elevating work of art, and even better, it is but the genesis of the VNV Nation empire, whose genius continues in the insubstantial castles of darkness of Empires and its subsequent beam of light Futureperfect.
Sloppy, repetitive and untalented........2005-01-27
Intriguing, although somewhat simplistic..........2003-12-13
The melodies, although at times complex, are subordinated to pounding drums during some of the tracks, and this seems to grate owing to the fact that the beats are as rough as a cheese grater. If the melodies in some of the songs were played louder and more frequently, this would be a brilliant album. However, the dark and haunting sounds are sometimes drowned in repetitive drumming all to often, resulting in a record that has less melody, and dramatic impact, than it potentially had. The only songs that really manage to strike the balance (and also be the best tracks on the album IMO) are Joy, Procession and Honor. These songs are so catchy, and awfully danceable, that they would turn a retirement home into a rave. Still, most of the other tracks can get too rough, or, suprisingly, too sedate.
This, however, doesnt mean that VNV's first big album is bad. In fact, it is very good! The lyrics, although sometimes too preachy, are quite intelligent and compelling, and the times in the songs where they allow the melody to shine through are utterly breathtaking. If you are new to EBM and want to start with the sound of the Berlin Philharmonic being ripped apart by chainsaw-weilding Nazis (which this album is wonderful at creating), then I would reccomend this. However, a softer (and more depressing) alternative for an EBM novice would be Failure by Assemblage 23.
Although this record is too polar (your choice between sheet-metal instrumentals or boring ballads, with too few 'middle ground' tracks), it shows excellent promise and a vision that was fully realised in VNV's next album, Empires.
