3 out of 5 stars HAS ITS MOMENTS.......2007-04-13

this is a listenable CD but I can't get too worked up about it. From what I heard on the disc I cannot say this band "can rock in zep shoes", as one reviewer said. Not even close. Jon Hyde is hardly the kickass drummer that reviewer would lead you to believe. If he is I don't hear it here. The track Grim Reaper has a Zep flavor, Recognition has a very bluesy feel to it but doesn't really take off, Deep Down is a nice instrumental track. Like I said, the CD is listenable but doesn't really grab me as I had hoped. Oh well.

[...]

5 out of 5 stars Why not the "Next Big Thing"?.......2005-04-30

Count me as one who is mystified as to why Detective never made it to the Big Time. All the ingredients were there: all star line up, big push by big record label and gobs of l.p.'s produced at the time (how many vinyl copies of "Detective" have YOU seen in the bargain bin?).
But let's face it, Detective was a little bit "different". Right off the bat on "Detective" they are definitely playing it cool. That is to say that the first track, "Recognition", is hardly the rockin' head blast that the at-the-time Led Zeppelin-heads were expecting, let alone wanted. It's a spooky little number with a bluesy slide guitar and some jazzy riffs. Things heat up a little with "Got Enough Love", but it seems that the boys are taking their cue from the Philly soul bands, not Bad Company, who quite literally stole their thunder.
Things finally click on "Grim Reaper" wherein Detective solidly lays down the heavy metal thunder, sheets upon sheets of black and dark blue. But I suspect that at the time of release not many listeners had made it that far. Certainly not to "Nightingale", the fourth track, a brutally beautiful "dreamy love ballad" (Michael Des Barres' description), which could be the band's finest hour.
The remainder of the CD does manage to chart some Bad Company territory, the galloping drums of Jon Hyde (who would figure so prominantly on "It Takes One To Know One") finally stepping out. But all is tempered with a flavourful jazz instrumental "Deep Down" that finally highlights the keyboard talents of Tony Kaye.
Come to think of it, this music is down right unselfish. Not one musician outshines the other. Detective is a perfect cohesive unit. Remarkable.
Things get hot and sticky with "Wild Hot Summer Nights" and bass man Bobby Picket finally gets a go at it. Deliciously funky.
Detective was a cut above in the quality department (please refer to the list of band-mates again) and certainly uncompromising. And not to go in to too much detail about Mr. Michael Des Barres, but given his pretty boy glam roots and "Decadent with a D" lifestyle, he was probably a little too far out for the day. But god, could he sing and turn phrases and coo and caw.
"Detective" is tasty, bluesy and thoughtful. Something completely unexpected at the time. So why wasn't Detective "the next big thing"? I think we're looking at the time honoured tradition of how the really practiced and talented bands don't get near the success the gimmick laden and untalented bands get. Unfair? Hell yes.

5 out of 5 stars detective locates led zep.......2004-04-22

this band found the right gooves, the right clues, and can rock in zep shoes. it is so sad the music /radio biz forgot to give credit to this band. i am so glad that this recording is available .it is time for all you radio rockers to wake up and re-discover the undiscoverd true sounds of rock n roll. the drum tracks on this cd are so powerful , led zep could have carried on after jon bonhams death and replaced him with detectives drummer jon hyde. this cd is a must for the serious 24-7 rock n rollers of the world. its time to stop being clueless, the sound has been found.thanks too the detective band , tony kaye, keys, michael monarch ,guitars, michael des barres ,vocals, bobby pickett, bass and last, one of the best kick ass drummers ever to sit behind the drum kit. laddies and gentile rockers mr.jon hyde.get this cd and learn what you have been missing. rock on.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nice Complement to the First.......2005-04-30

Detective's second l.p. "It Takes One To Know One" was certainly a step in a more predictable direction, if not a "full frontal assault" direction. Perhaps the thinking was that the first l.p. was a little too "soft" and maybe even too "classy" for the masses. It was time to put the pedal to the metal. And there's certainly much metal, not to mention mettle, on this one.
And if anyone is still insisting that vinyl l.p.'s sound better than CD's, then FINALLY here is proof that this person needs to have his ears taken out of his bum. This CD sounds positively blistering and Jon Hyde's drums have never sounded so thundering. Galloping stampedes, anyone? Wild horses unleashed? Bluesy guitars, jazzy interludes, keyboards turned tastefully down (uh oh, here we go again, Detective showing some class), funky-a** bass playing and THE VOICE. Yep, you know what I'm saying. It's that Michael Des Barres guy again, clearing the air with his diesel fuel pipes.
If "It Takes One To Know One" didn't live up to the diversity and astonishing clarity of the first effort, the second is every bit as astonishing in its sheer "rock-ing-ness". Tracks like "Competition", "Fever" and "Tear Jerker" are amazing shards of heavy funk riffing. And there is a more than a passing resemblance to John Bonham and Led Zep in the drums. Man, this stuff is potent.
But wait, there are some gentle moments. "Something Beautiful Has Died" is every bit as heartfelt as "Nightingale" was on the first l.p. And the follow up track, "Warm Love", is every bit as positive and love-affirming as "Something Beautiful Has Died" is not.

5 out of 5 stars Detective, "It Takes One To Know One".......2004-04-09

Great band, highly underrated. This band received the full Swan Song sonic treatment, big drum sound and live ambiance sound. Michael Des Barres sings like a true "rock & roll" crooner on par with Zep's Robert Plant or early (Jeff Beck/Faces) Rod Stewart. Michael Monarch plays guitar with great style and confidence. Very tight but loose sound. This band rocks.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Arena Rock........2004-02-22

Now were cooking, I saw these guys when this album was out and what a great live show they had. First let me say that Michael Des Barres is from the old school of Hollywood rock, sunset strip days with Silverhead and if anyone knows he was later with 'Power Station' after Robert Palmer departed. From the start he was always a showman as vocalist and in his early days he was acting and can be noticed in the movie "To Sir With Love" with english singer LuLu. Guitarist great Michael Monarch from the legend band "Steppenwolf", Born To Be Wild, The Pusher, Magic Carpet Ride, has got riffs that were ripped off by many future players kicks this Cd with his unique style and is still to this day out there with his solo music. Keyboard player Tony Kaye from "Yes" and "Badger" has always been way ahead of his time and his effort here does not fall short with his playing. The song "Help Me Up" is a fast tune that will get you in the mood to rock and the big beat of "Competition" does remind some of a sort of Zep Robert Plant type sound. Not too bad of an album. The one standout track is "Dynamite"which has a decent riff and does rock out quite well. The rest of the album is okay and I would say worth the purchase.I do have both albums and feel that the purchase has been worth it.Basic rock and roll executed well..

      Product Description

Alec Wilder was a man of many parts, in every way unique and unforgettable. Always in coat and tie, possessing an almost Edwardian sense of courtesy, he lived a nomadic existence, traveling with most of what he owned in two suitcases. Enigmatically sophisticated to a degree impossible to describe, he could sit and talk to young children with a kind of innocent gravity, leaving them wide-eyed and attentive, then later he might blow bubbles down a staircase at a formal dinner party. Unspeakably well read, he would breeze through the London Times crossword puzzle (in ink), yet he never held himself above anyone, a genuinely humble man – albeit with no tolerance for pretension in anyone. As a musician, his discerning ears reacted immediately to a performer’s style: a moment of his approval would remain a treasured memory for life. After all, he was revered by the likes of Eileen Farrell, Charles Mingus, and Frank Sinatra, and he really did know what was “right” and what was not. A composer of hundreds of songs and huge catalog of chamber music, Wilder created an oeuvre that is unusually diverse yet characteristically American. Categorizing his work has not been an easy task for musicians and critics, as it does not clearly “fit” into any one slot. That, along with his frequent use of popular and jazz elements and a penchant for writing lighthearted divertimento-like movements or entertainments, has often led to his being dismissed as not being a “serious” composer, while his craftsmanship and lyrical sentiment went largely ignored. In a society quick to put labels on things, he has been an enigma. While his music was championed by many of this country’s leading performers during his lifetime, Wilder did little to further his own cause and shunned every opportunity to gain further recognition. Most of his chamber music was unpublished until the last years of his life. Now, nearly 25 years since his death, it is heartening to see new recordings by a whole younger generation discovering his music for the first time. This new Albany disc is just such an example.

5 out of 5 stars THE MOVIE AND SOUNDTRACK RULE!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-12

I have always been into London's history and I LOVE the Great Mouse Detective because it's in London in the 1890's. I've have always pretended to be a second mouse assitant of Basil's to go on cases with he and Dr. Dawson. Now the soundtrack made it even more fun. I LOVE the Big Ben Chase on the soundtrack when Basil is in a life or death battle with Ratigan on Big Ben's hour hand. I still LOVE the movie and the soundtrack today and I'm proud to say that I'm 13 years old and I still pretended to do cases with two imaginary mice.(P.S. I'm watching the movie right now!)

      5 out of 5 stars Isn't this a crime!.......2001-08-31

To be honest, I have seen the case of this movie but I have not see the tape that it's on, but I think I have seen the movei just not for a very long time. This cd has both music it self and some singing. The music parts of this cd which has more of than singing was done by Henry Mancini (he was Music Composed and he conducted the music), I can't remember when this cd was made, think I might have been under 5 years old and now I am almost 18 years old. Here are the songs and music on this cd, Tracks 6, 11, 13, and 17 has the songs on them.
      1. Main Title
      2. Dawson Finds Olivia 3. Enter Basil
      4. Enter Ratigan
      5. Crushed Box
      6. The World's Greatest Criminal Mind (sung by Vicent Price).
      7. Unusual Foot Prints
      8. Here's Toby!
      9. Check Mate
      10. Reunion 11. Let Me Be Good To You (sung by Melissa Manchester)
      12. Ratigan's Plan
      13. Good Bye So Soon (sung by Vincent Price)
      14. Cat Nip
      15. Big Ben Chase
      16. Wrap-up 17. End Title: Good-bye So Soon Just in case you may have missed the songs. So this takes place in London, that's where Big Ben is. Could you think you would have a clock tower in your city or close too?

4 out of 5 stars Mancini "scores" for mice what he did for panthers!.......2000-07-10

"The Great Mouse Detective" is a film that suffers with a slight split personality. Three fourths of the movie is typical cutesy Disney fare; the last fourth, featuring the battle between the good detective and the evil Ratigan is somewhat intense, possibly a little too intense for the very young.

Mancini's score reflects this. The main title is exciting and engaging. Vincent Price's solo turns on "The World's Greatest Criminal Mind" and "Goodbye So Soon" are hilarious and melodic, in a sinister way. As an earlier reviewer stated, the Melissa Manchester addition "Let Me Be Good to You" is quite provocative for a "G-rated" family film.

The "Big Ben Chase" is ominous and thrilling as the two rodents are involved in a deadly battle atop London's famous landmark. Mancini's music has never been more "on the mark."

While not up to his work on the Panther films or "Victor/Victoria," this is still a treat for his fans.

If you're a fan of 50's do-wop music, you'll enjoy this fun album. Lots of light-hearted 50's music. Robert Downey Jr., who is an excellent singer sings the new version of "In My Dreams" with alot passion and heart. It's pretty fun to listen to the 50's version of the song (also included) back to back with Robert's version. My 6 year old has become quite good at singing along with "Mr. Sandman" - her personal favorite!
