Thanks to the success of pioneering musician-scorers like Hans Zimmer, the symbiosis of traditional orchestral tones with synthesized electronic elements has become one of film-scoring's most popular working methods. The underlying reasons, however, haven't been always been particularly altruistic; a music software program doesn't have to work for scale. Composer James Newton Howard's score for director Scott Hick's telling of novelist David Guterson's interracial soap opera cum murder mystery is one of the best of the new genre, a seamless sonic wedding of the orchestral/choral/electronic, replete with appropriate ethnic instrumentation (is it real or is it Microsoft?). It's music that ranges dreamily from delicate flute passages and ethereal choral work to understated solo cello and percussive flourishes. This is what New Age music should sound like. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
One of Howard's best!.......2006-02-25
Unlike many other great composers, Howard not only uses large orchestras with the traditional instruments for his compositions. For example The Grand Canyon and Primal Fear have as main instruments synthesizers and/or electric guitars.
Snow falling on Cedars is one of those compositions that involves traditional as well as non traditonal instruments and at times choirs singing like it's the end of an opera. The atmosphere of the different tracks can change from frightening or theatrical to peaceful and relaxed to emotional and sensitive. All tracks have a slightly depressing undertone but in a beautiful way.
Although this soundtrack is probably best compared to The Village, in a sense it's almost a 'best of' cd because in the melodies you'll find many similarities to a great lot of his other soundtracks. But because it also has a very distinct flavour this soundtrack stands proudly on its own.
When listening to it, already during the first few seconds the music captivates you and you'll experience moodswings from the beginning to the end. After listening to it a couple of times, I discovered the music really grows on you.
Definitely one of my favourites from Howard!

Fulfilling, thoughful, and British.......2004-01-31
OK, this band have been influenced by all things British; The Smiths, Radiohead, Longpigs immediately spring to mind. Would we dare use this sound and claim to be original? They have, and they've done a good job.
"Almost The Same", "Can't Feel A Thing", "Come into the Darkness" undulate from crunching guitar and melodic acoustic sounds, while "Mind is Evil" and "Keep Smiling" combine the somber melodies of Ben and Jason with a hint every-so-often of the Beatles's use of strings to remind you once more of a britpop era past.
With "Wonder if the snow will settle" you'll swear you know from somewhere (Beatles perhaps?), but it never gives you the satisfacion of recollection, perhaps therefore, it's no suprise this was my favourite track.
If albums from Elbow or the Longpigs grace your collection then you'll recognise the connection to "I'd like to Hurt you" (haunting and flavoured with great bass sounds), "Just off the coast" (fantastic guitar riff to this track, and wet drum sounds), "Treat Yourself with Kindness" (vocals glide over the top of a wave of anthemic guitar - not unlike the old days of Radiohead).
This album is not for playing before you go out. Many have commented that it's airs on the negative side, but so what? they have something to say and I think people will listen.
9.1 out of 10 from PitchforkMedia.com.......2003-11-09
With the band's arcane 2001 debut, Lido, behind him, lyricist Jason Pegg clouds his nostalgia with fear and devilry. As drums clap like pew-kneelers under buttresses of strings on "The Mind Is Evil", Pegg warns like a grimacing choirboy, "it makes me do all those unspeakable things." This veiling of coal-colored sentiment in majestic settings runs through every track. In "Keep Smiling", the lines "Just nod your head accordingly and do the opposite of anything they tell you" mirror Thom Yorke's Hail to the Thief manifesto, but Pegg's de-politicized subversion strikes harder-- as unlike Yorke's reaction against the obvious, with his willingness to point the finger inward to less-admittable wickedness. Elsewhere, processional whipcracks of percussion and paint-chipped baby grands drive him to admit "I wouldn't hurt a fly, but I'd really like to punish you" on "I'd Like to Hurt You", suggesting that any of us can snap under pressure-- whether that pressure results from government, the anxious Zeitgeist, or ex-girlfriends, Pegg doesn't say, but the universal ambiguity of his sentiments injects the music with a raw and timeless nature.
Throughout Cedars, Clearlake continually find beauty in melancholy and melancholy behind beauty, while raising your hairs in reverence with occasional guitar squalls. Murals of feedback, keyboards, and chanting close in around "Come into the Darkness". As Pegg inverts the Golden Rule into a mantra of selfish motivation on "Treat Yourself with Kindness", lurching chords burst up the walls like shadows springing in sudden bold bars of light through stained glass. The drama segues into the closing hymn of "Trees in the City", where hope is found in the resilient growth of greenery in a smoky metropolis.
The British love to honor through a lacerating wit. It seems almost as if modernity is tolerated only with the thought that one day humanity will lose and the English countryside will expel the scars of society. Clearlake fit into this tradition as true patriots. Cedars towers in the tradition of the best British art.

Top-Flight Jazz.......2002-11-11
Backed by the A-list support of Cedar Walton on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Billy Drummond on drums, and recorded at the famed Van Gelder Studios, this luscious sounding album brings Coryell to the land of traditional jazz. In it we hear richly-layered guitar tones, crystalline keyboards, and a rhythm section that is both subtle and convincing.
The record opens with the title track, the leader's opus to the veteran pianist. The tricky melody lays the groundwork for the musical solos that are to be found throughout the album.
With an intro that would certainly give Monk a big grin, the band's rendition of "Bemsha Swing" moves them firmly into hard-bop. Walton shows just how strong a soloist he can be as he brings taste and tradition to this session.
Coryell tactfully opens with a lyrical eight bars and then begins to blow, as he and Walton show just how well they play together on Walton's exciting piece "Fantasy in D." Walton's commanding highly-melodic lines often bring to mind sounds of the orient.
The lovely rendition of "Theme for Ernie" is a showcase for Coryell's deep understanding of its changes. Coryell's blending of discordant and melodic lines produce both strong tension and emotion.
On "Limehouse Blues," Coryell plays both rhythm and lead on an acoustic guitar. When he brings the tempo up, we are reminded of his acoustic sets from the 1970s.
The record continues with a strong version of Wes Montgomery's "D-Natural Blues," lovely versions of "What's New" and "It Could Happen to You," and the fiery modern Walton piece "Newest Blues."
Rounding out the session is Coryell's sublime acoustic piece "Shapes." Enriched by the recording genius of Rudy Van Gelder, we hear the beauty of Coryell's finger plucked guitar.
If you are traditional jazz fan, or you just love beautiful music, this album will be a welcome addition to your Christmas list.

Product Description
The art-music composer of today faces many challenges. On the one hand, one is tempted to create music that embraces a diversity of styles. On the other hand, one hopes to develop a personal language that would reflect ones artistic orientation and at the same time communicate effectively with the audience. This issue is of particular relevance to composers who grew up in non-Western cultures. Their music, to some extent, manifests their struggle to mediate between Western music and music of their own culture. Shih-Hui Chen is one example. Having grown up in Taiwan and having her basic musical training there, her works have been influenced by traditional Chinese as well as Western concert music. Over the years Chen has become adept in the compositional language of Western music. She earned a doctoral degree from Boston University while continuing her education in the United States. A prolific composer, she has written for a wide range of genres, including solo,! chamber, orchestral and film music. The five works featured on this CD cover a broad span of time (1999-2003), and reflect a developing aesthetic. This music summarizes Chens development and comes out of a desire to create works that assimilate her Chinese heritage and her training in Western art music. Like the interaction between yin and yang, these two opposing yet complementary forces continue to shape Chens aesthetic and her music, resulting in music that explores the representation of Chineseness within predominantly Western compositional frameworks.

my heart and I killed off my mind, and we agree.......2005-03-29
As for the lyrics, the singer certainly wouldn't get any work as a motivational speaker. The lyrics seems to be waiver between direct Morrissey gloom (I'd Really Like to Hurt You), introspective self-doubt (Wonder if the Snow Will Settle), and passion about life (Mind is Evil). However, despite the sound, which is quite dissonant and gloomy, the lyrics typically leave me feeling triumphant and empowered in my realism.
The music is beautiful crafted and seems to go quite perfectly with the lyrics throughout the entire album. The first time I listened to it, I was slightly thrown off by the unique changes and sounds. However, the music quickly grew on me in much the same way that Stereolab's "Switched On" or Bjork's "Homogenic" did. The sound is rough but the edges are polished. Distortion is not lacking when the singer is recommending us to "Come into the Darkness", and the softness and tranquility are there when describing "Trees in the City".
As a poem, this album is touching and passionate.
As a feat of songwriting, this album makes writing your own songs seems nothing but vain.
As a work of art, this album is truly outstanding.
Notable points:
-The chorus of "Mind is Evil"
-The interlude of "Come into the Darkness"
-The lyrics of "Keep Smiling"
-The beautiful transition from the dissonant "Treat Yourself with Kindness" to the peaceful "Trees in the City"

Customer Reviews:
It's no contest. Dorothy has the biggest set of pipes. :-).......2001-10-13
The album - Ms. Papadakos' best to date, as far as I'm concerned - has a "green" theme (as well it might, given her close association to Paul Winter and his Consort over the years). But it's hardly "for tree-huggers only" and it represents her own novel musical thoughts on what we tend to call "world music." The common thread is that of trees around the world, and her world music collaborators on this album could hardly be topped. Most of the collaborations involve Dorothy at the Aeolian-Skinner console, but two of them have her at the piano keyboard instead, and one of these is a heart-stopping trip down memory lane.
High marks go to Dennis Yerry, native American flutist, in a haunting duet with Dorothy in "The Sacred Tree," Steve Gorn playing clarinet with a breathy mid-Eastern style in "Cedars of Lebanon," Pandit Ramesh Mishra on sarangi (an Indian cello-like instrument) performing - with Dorothy - a raga originally created by the great Ravi Shankar. Elizabeth Henreckson-Farnum sings a beautiful version of "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree," set to words of an anonymous poet by Elizabeth Posten; a beautiful melody indeed.
Dorothy has as well a few solo tracks of her own. The opening improvisation - "Come, O Great Spirit" - is, all by itself, worth the price of admission for all pipe organ aficianados. In this piece, the mountain winds are her collaborators.
I'm saving the heart-stopping best until last. The late, great Billie Holiday had many "signature" tunes for which she is justly remembered and will never be forgotten. One of my favorites has always been "Willow Weep For Me," both by Lady Day and by June Christie, who had been Stan Kenton's vocalist and had put her own style on the piece. On this album, Theresa Thomason - justly famous for her own gospel performances at the Cathedral and with the Paul Winter Consort - sheds her gospel style and gives us a jazz blues performance that can only be described as a ringer for Lady Day's incomparable version. Listen yourself, and you'll appreciate how one's heart can be stopped by this rendition. Truy a trip down memory lane. Dorothy's jazz piano, along with Alex Norris on trumpet, Vashon Johnson on bass and Nate Smith on drums, complement Theresa perfectly; the style and the sound of the era are captured with uncanny accuracy.
If it weren't for those Aeolian-Skinner pipes, my vote for "best set of pipes" would surely have gone to Ms. Thomason. We'll save THAT vote for a different Ms. Thomason, on a different album, singing in her more well-known gospel music style. But I do have to say that she does have the sound and the feel of Lady Day nailed here.
