4 out of 5 stars Pure beauty.......2005-09-06

Ever since Charlotte Church turned into a tabloids' darling and a wannabe pop star, there's been a gap opened for a young, sweet-faced soprano. The best bet on filling it seems to be Hayley Westenra, a young singer/dancer from New Zealand.

The result: "Pure," an album that is reminiscent of early Sarah Brightman, back when she did folk songs and showtunes. Westenra sticks close to her classical sound with songs like the delicate "In Trutina" and the traditional New Zealand song "Pokarekare Ana," which is rendered with the backing of a a rather muddled male chorus and some swelling strings.

However, Westenra doesn't neglect more modern songs, and she does well in classical pop as well as straightforward classical. The big difference seems to be a bit of synth and a delicate guitar melody, in songs like the charming "Beat of Your Heart" and dreamy "Why Painted the Moon Black?" It's a smooth, thoroughly sweet crossover effect.

Westenra also eschews the usual round of classical-pop songs, like "Nella Fantasia." I love that song, but it's been done so many times. Instead, she opts for Maori lullabies, Vivaldi ballads, the neglected "Mummer's Dance" and the orchestral cathedral grandeur of "Benedictus." She even covers Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights," adding a modern feel to the finale.

That is not to say that every choice is an excellent one. "Wuthering Heights" has Westenra trying to sound more Bush-ian, while "Amazing Grace" is too simple vocally. Aside from those, her choices of song are excellent -- rich, uplifting and beautiful, and backed by a wide range of orchestral musicians, especially the strings.

There is also an accompanying EP, in which Westenra covers four Christmas ballads, and does them all justice. Her vocals are well suited to the dignified lyrics of songs like "The Mummer's Dance" and "Silent Night," although a bit less for the still-lovely "Mary Did You Know" and "Away in a Manger."

Her vocals themselves are not operatic, but they are strong, clear and sweet, without pretensions or dramatic flourishes. The effect is stunning, more given to magic and sweetness than to keeping to classical standards. Since this was recorded when Westenra was only sixteen, one wonders how good she'll be in ten years.

Despite comparisons to Charlotte Church, Hayley Westenra is more like Sarah Brightman -- a sweet-voiced singer, straddling the fence between classical and pop. An enchanting experience.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A GIFT!.......2004-12-20

I RECEIVED THESE 2 CDS AS A GIFT AND I LISTEN TO THEM FREQUENTLY. HER PERFORMANCE WITH RUSSELL WATSON (ON DVD)ON HIS TOUR IS WONDERFUL. I CAN'T WAIT FOR A NEW ALBUM. WOULD LIKE TO GET HER NEW SONG, BRIDAL BALLAD, FROM THE SOUNDTRACK OF THE MERCHANT OF VENICE

5 out of 5 stars Incredible voice - Incredible CD.......2004-04-29

I recently saw Hayley on TV and had to immediately buy this CD. Her voice is so clear and pure, and her songs are filled with lyrical emotion.

It is an absolutely incredible CD that any music lover should have in their collection. My favorite song is Wuthering Heights.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2004-04-27

Her album is the best, voice of an angel.......you can totally relakes to her music.

5 out of 5 stars Charlotte is NO match..........2003-12-15

Hayley is just phenomenal. There is no doubt that she surpasses every other female artist in her genre. This CD is astonishing. My two favorite songs are "Heaven" and "Wuthering Heights". The first Hayley Westenra song I ever heard was "Heaven". It would not be the last. Her voice is like that of an angel. She has a smooth, serene sound, and she has an incredible range. If you want a more classical sound, you want her. It's not that gaudy stuff that people generally think of. This stuff has a beat... and it's not pumping with bass. If you're a fan of Sarah Brightman, Josh Groban, Charlotte Church, or Mario Frangoulis... try Hayley Westenra, you won't regret it. I just can't wait 'til she comes to the states... that'll be a good day. She has a few Italian songs, but she's not heavy on the foreign stuff like some of the other artists of Opera / Classical. She's got a wonderful voice for a little girl... I'm a huge fan, Hayley! You roped me in, in about 2 minutes time!

4 out of 5 stars a couple of great songs.......2007-06-29

I had to write this to disagree with one of the reviewers who disliked/hated the song Drummer Like Me. What? Ironically, I looked up this album (on Amazon) for just that song (it's not on itunes); Drummer Like Me is a gorgeous, well-written, wonderful song; one of my favorites ever. Different strokes for different folks I guess. The Crane is another wonderful song, more of a "rocker." Wish I'd seen them live, back in the day (along with all those other great Mpls bands).

    5 out of 5 stars Snow Days.......2006-12-11

This album contains one amazing little gem called Snow Days. It's absolutely inspired, and that's why it's getting five stars. Plus the band's musicianship isn't bad. But their lyrics on every song except Snow Days are pretty hard to take. Sophomoric. Banal. Sometimes embarassingly bad. In fact, Drummer Like Me is absolutely hideous. The only time I've been able to listen to it in its entirety was the first time I played it, and that was in disbelief. That being said, buy the CD for Snow Days if you want to experience God; for Drummer Like Me if you want to hear a song that your 12 year old nephew's garage band would write.

    5 out of 5 stars JULIETTE.......2006-11-21

I wandered one evening into a bar in Uptown, and Trip Shakespeare was playing. If you never saw them live, then your life will end incomplete. My favorite Trip show was a benefit on Halloween, and all were dressed in fabulous costumes. Lots of drama with this group, but a show one will never forget. Some of my best memories were at Trip Concerts! Bring back Trip! One of my all time favorite bands in the Universe. ToolMaster of Brainerd. Who could think that stuff up???

5 out of 5 stars Love It, Love Them - Miss It, Miss Them.......2005-11-24

Across the Universe has got to be one of my all-time favorite albums. It's been that way from the moment I first saw it in a used cd store on the Upper West Side in Manhattan. And then when I popped it in my Player and did my errands around Manhattan, things just got better and better.

From the first strains of Turtledove, I was in love. In fact, the only song I ever didn't absolutely love was "the Slacks". That error in judgment on my part was corrected when I first got to see Trip Shakespeare perform the Slacks. Their take on their own song was so wonderfully, humorously, enlightening, I began to make the Slacks the starting point for many listens of this masterpiece.

Unfortunately, during my divorce, my ex decided to keep Across the Universe. And won't even copy it for me. Even though I have groveled.

I love it, I love them. I miss it, I miss them.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect Creativity.......2003-10-03

This is one of the best collection of songs ever published. It is rare that all the songs on an entire album are exceptional. This album is a must for everyone's collection of alternative music without the lethargic, angst-ridden depressive feel that most alternative music contains. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A Different Look at Beatles Music.......2005-12-22

In the World Beat area, we are presented with traditional flamenco guitarist Eric Hansen doing not so traditional interpretations of classic Beatles tunes.

At first it may not appear that Flamenco can blend with the Beatles, but Mr. Hansen picks some of the best guitar pieces the Beatles had to offer and expertly weaves acoustic guitar in the flamenco style with some of their best loved melodies.

This is traditional Flamenco style guitar playing. Mr. Hansen is well versed in this style, having worked with this classic Spanish style of guitar since the early 90s. He executes this flawlessly, yet brings in his own styling, adding elements of classic rock or a touch a jazz and allowing the styles to blend and speak together. The intricate fingering of notes does not detract in any way from the music, but rather enhances the works, giving the listener something new to listen to rather than a tired performance of the same works again. This gives many of the songs a new life and provides new interest for the listener.

And excellent choice for the opening track that gives the listener the very best combination of both styles is Michelle. This piece was made for acoustic guitar and Mr. Hansen expertly weaves the flamenco style into this piece.

Mr. Hansen successfully interprets such pieces as Strawberry Fields Forever and Fool on the Hill, which lent them to the very intricate style of flamenco very nicely. She's Leaving Home came across surprisingly well, and is an outstanding interpretation on this collection.

Across the Universe was also a real pleaser, as well as Here, There and Everywhere, which is another outstanding track of Mr. Hansen's work.

I enjoyed this very different look at the Beatles, through the eyes of a Flamenco guitarist. I was skeptical at first, but Mr. Hansen shows how easily the forms can be blended. There is a touch of ambience to the work, and it allows the two forms to peacefully co-exist and gives us a very likable and enjoyable performance. I feel the style gave new interest to the works.

If you are a fan of the Beatles, you will love this new look at their music. And those who like contemporary Flamenco guitar will find this very different, but also very agreeable. mafoster

    1 out of 5 stars A lesson learned.......2002-10-04

I like the music of the Beatles. I also like full orchestral performances of music. I like the quality of Telarc recordings. I like many performances by Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops, although they have a predictable tendency to get overly gimmicky. I bought this CD off the store rack using that logic. Also, I had the balance of a freebie gift card in my pocket, just yearning to be spent. I had hopes of popping this CD in my player and hearing something on the caliber of Moody Blues (Days of Future Passed) or Renaissance (Scheherazade). The moment the King'Singers chimed in with their barbershop-quartet style vocals, I knew this CD was destined for my "never will play this again" bin. Without their vocals, it might have fared better. I regretted the purchase, but was able to resell it to someone who had different musical tastes than I. I've had a few instances where I was pleasantly surprised with the purchase of a CD on a hunch, but I will try to avoid this kind of buy-it-blind purchase again.

It could have been some more songs and it has its ups and downs, but this CD definitly got qualitys and its a universe between this and the standard awfull chessy Newage. The angelic female vocals coming in then and then mix well with Terrys very moving and soaring solopassages. Its very moody and calming and those who like Enya may find something new here!

4 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2001-06-28

Terry Oldfield's newest release is a combination of various musical instruments, vocals, and natural sounds. The music ranges from melodic to ambient with a soothing and calming message. The shortest of the five pieces is more than 7 1/2 minutes long, so the moods are sustained, and the listener can be transported into an extended, gentle fantasy. Known mostly as a flutist (flautist), Oldfield also plays piano and keyboards, percussion, whistles, pipes, and bells. The three vocal pieces are lovely, but I really prefer Oldfield's soaring instrumental work. "From the Heart" is the soundtrack to a dream of the listener's choosing. Oldfield plays all of the parts on this one, and it meanders like a lazy stream. Actually, water sounds run through this work, making it easy to imagine Oldfield sitting on the bank of a quiet river, bringing his musical vision to life. "When" opens with a haunting, slightly ominous prelude. Reverb and the use of echo cause this piece to evoke images of wide-open, and perhaps very dark, space. When the vocals come in, the instruments become a much more subtle backdrop, but Oldfield supplies several passionate instrumental solos between the verses. "Down to Earth" is a darkly spiritual piece, showing clearly what Oldfield does best - emotional soundtracks to be experienced with or without visual accompaniment. This is my favorite piece on this album. "Across the Universe" holds a consistent mood throughout, and travels at a very peaceful tempo. In the liner notes, Oldfield is quoted: "This album is about the yearning to be free that becomes so much a part of Human Condition as we travel the pathways to liberation." Very nicely done!

4 out of 5 stars Beatles Like I've Never Heard Before.......2005-02-10

I borrowed this CD from the library out of curiosity and what a delightful suprise. The interpretation of Beatles music is wonderfully simple - I especially love the different variations done with the same tune in some of the pieces giving them a fresh sound. Harmonies between cello and violin in "Norwegian Wood", "Across the Universe" and "Girl" are mesmerising. Mostly played with a slow tempo, this is great soothing music after a stressful day. This CD is definitely worth purchasing for a twist in popular Lennon-McCartney compositions.

4 stars for song selection, otherwise 5 stars for interpretation.

1 out of 5 stars Interesting Cover, but Bad CD.......2004-06-05

I can not believe that Ofra is even famous. Her playing is so stiff and lacks phrasing. Her tone quality is horrible. The only reason that she makes recordings is because her father is rich and he bought her a several million dollar cello and paid symphony orchestras to let her play solos with them. But, it is interesting to hear a cellist play the Beatles. Only buy this CD if you have boughten every cd on this webstite and have a little money left over.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Relaxing.......2004-05-21

The Beatles and Ofra Harnoy! The best of both worlds! What more could you ask for? A friend gave me this CD, and I have enjoyed listening to this right before bedtime every night. Ms. Harnoy, I applaud you for making some of the finest renditions of my favorite Beatles tunes. If you're a semi-professional classical musician like me and you don't have this in your CD collection, you're missing out--Big Time!!! 5 + stars for a wonderful CD!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lovely and powerful.......2002-01-01

Before you write this off as another attempt to "muzak" the Beatles, listen to Harnoy's lovely playing on "She's Leaving Home," "Across The Universe" and "Girl" and see if you still feel that way once you've heard them. A great set of interpretations by a most evocative cellist.

    3 out of 5 stars 5 stars SACD 3 Stars Music.......2002-11-22

Telarc's SACD recording is 5 Star. This is elevator music. I'm almost old enough to remember the Beatles on TV. This is not them. This is Beatles ala choir and orchestra. Very Good, if that's what you were looking for.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Dance.......2001-06-02

I originally bought this CD used, but it was scratched and could only hear half of the songs, so I bought a new one, and am so glad I did! I listen to this CD so much at work, when coworkers enter my area, they ask if I can only afford one CD (I have hundreds and they know it). One of the best songs on the CD, has no sample! What a shame, Track 12 Keta-Man Strong Enough is the BOMB. Shining Path Under the Milky Way and Garden Eden Lemon Tree both great as well. Well worth the money, and a MUST for anyone who enjoys Dance as much as I do.

    4 out of 5 stars It's pretty good.......1999-06-27
