Album Description
Top of the British Classical Charts for 10 Weeks! Billboard Top Ten Classical Recording - December 2002! This album gathers together most of the carols I have composed over the years, plus a sprinkling of my arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a program which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story. I have always enjoyed carols ever since I first sang them as a member of my school choir, and it was not long before I began to write carols of my own-in fact my first two published compositions were the Nativity Carol and the Shepherd's Pipe Carol. For any musician involved in choral music, Christmas is an especially joyous time, and I am indeed happy that it has played a part in my musical life for so many years- JOHN RUTTER
Customer Reviews:
Rutter Christmas Album.......2007-05-14
Great selection of music, and well presented. This is however older recordings that do not match the quality of Rutter's latest recordings such as the Te Deum or the Gloria.
Unique and Beautiful!.......2007-03-09
John Rutter, and his beautiful music, is such a gift to the world. This unique Christmas CD is magnificent! Especially touching are two of Rutter's original carols, "Christmas Lullaby" and the joyful "Angels' Carol." The musical selections speak to the soul, helping the listener connect to emotions of joy, peace, faith, hope, and love. This is a worthy addition to your collection of Christmas CDs.
Johh Rutter Chirstmas Album.......2007-02-19
If I were to choose only one Christmas album to ever own, this would be the one. John Rutter is an exceptional composer of religious music, with unusual harmonies. The music is difficult to sing, and because this is his own choir and he is directing it, the performance is flawless. Gives you goosebumps.
Liked it enough to go through a lot of trouble to give it a review........2007-02-07
Great music by John Rutter: Great performance!
John Rutter and Cambridge Singers.......2007-01-18
This is quintessential English cathedral music; beautifully sung. Reminds one of the English Christmas -- warm and serene -- that we've only experienced in our dreams!

Album Description
Japanese exclusive reissue of the soft-rock singer/songwriter's 1978 sophomore album. Ten tracks. Sony. 1993.
Customer Reviews:
Superb, timeless, gorgeous.......2007-03-16
This album was originally released in 1978, and was a vast improvement on her 'Stone's Throw' album of the previous year. Carter's vocals, which were satisfactory on 'Stone's Throw', are even better here, and this time are complemented by material worthy of her talents.
The CD kicks off with the up-tempo 'Crazy', which is followed by a blend of mellow ballads, moving love-songs and the notably rocky 'Change in Luck'. There's a remarkable consistency here, but I'd have to tag 'The Blue Side' as a stand-out track.
The album also benefited from superb production (by James Newton Howard) and is an absorbing listen - it's warm, mellow and compelling, and has retained these qualities in the transition from vinyl to CD.
I love this album, and play it again and again.
Overlooked, underpraised from '78.......2005-08-08
How stupid and overpaid are record executives? Well, this has been allowed to be out-of-print for years and years, for beginners. No, it's not a perfect album, and people like below who make critiques such as "overwrought vocals," well go record your own darn album, jack. The excesses of an artist sometimes define them. I'm looking for essence and soul, not perfection, and Valerie supplies it here. Lots of solid tracks, and, yes, it's a bit blue at turns, but Wild Child and The Blue Side, well, gotta find 'em again. This LP and Lonette McKee were the overlooked gems of the year. I suppose everyone was busy with the Bee Gees and such and the only dull stretch of the Eagles.
not BAD, but marred by Valerie's overwrought vocals.......2005-06-16
Valerie Carter's second album, 1978's "Wild Child", is a frustrating listen. The album was produced by James Newton Howard and is simply loaded with big name players--Jeff Porcaro, Steve Lukather, Victor Feldman, Jay Graydon, Chuck Rainey, Davey Johnstone, Fred Tackett, Lenny Castro, and the list goes on--and a valiant effort was made to make this a quality pop-rock album. Also, Valerie herself did co-write a couple catchy pieces of material with the uptempo, somewhat disco-ish album opener "Crazy" and the riffy, mid-tempo pop-rocker "Lady In The Dark", the latter of which was co-written by Lukather. Also a standout track is David Batteau's supremely haunting ballad title track which closes the album. However, Valerie's vocals are a problem--they do have an appealingly husky quality which is, in part, nicely lent to the lyrically naughty "Crazy", but they tend to be annoyingly pretentious & overwrought. In hindsight, at times, she actually sounds like Britney Spears in a late '70s pop-rock context. On the annoyingly whiny Carter/ Howard-penned ballad "Taking the Long Way Home", she also brings to mind the excruciatingly pretentious vocals of Paula Cole. Adding to the annoyance level are beamed in layers of 'soulful' background vocals. Plus, a lot of the material, though not awful, is certainly a long way off from greatness--there's "Da Doo Rendezvous" with its limp melodicism and excessive repetition; the drippy "What's Become Of Us"; a rather forced-sounding attempt at funk with "The Story of Love"; "Change In Luck" which starts off as a respectable groove but has weak lyrics, not to mention those annoying vocals; and there's the soul ballad "Trying To Get To You" which is rote filler. Carter's version of the David Lasley/ Allee Willis-penned ballad "The Blue Side" is decent, but for a great version, check out Crystal Gayle's masterful vocal treatment of it on her 1979 "Miss The Mississippi" album. There's certainly some enjoyment to be had on "Wild Child" for big time fans of that '70s "L.A. pop-rock sound", but the album sure does leave a lot to be desired and feels like a real missed opportunity.
Thank God for the Japanese..........2003-01-26
...who seem to treasure our artists far more than we do. This is one of the great "chick albums" of the late '70s, but it is singular because instead of being a country/folk/rock excercise, it is a *soul* album. Carter may have looked like a beautiful air-headed model, but her songwriting and singing are solid and superb. To this day, I don't think I've heard a better blue-eyed soul performance than those on "Crazy" and "Story of Love." The woman had a spectacular voice, and I've always been at a loss as to why she wasn't a monster star. I've heard that the death of her mentor Lowell George sent her into seclusion, but still... She should have been huge. Oh well. We have this CD, which is wonderful.
James Newton Howard produces VAL!.......2001-06-13
With great results, the genius producer James Newton Howard writes songs with and coaches awesome vocals out of L.A.'s Valerie Carter. The songs here are more jazz, rock & R&B-influenced than on her folkier tinged debut. Did anyone know that there is another good song titled "Crazy?" It's the lead-off here and has an L.A. jazz/car driving energy to it. David Batteau's "Wild Child" is a moody classic and although Valerie does it justice, why hasn't someone else covered it? "Taking the Long Way Home" is so theatrical it sounds like it could come from Broadway's "Rent." Except it's way better than anything in that. Valerie's voice is flexible and fits almost any style and that is proven here. "The Blue Side" is a good, commercial pop tune and David Lasley's brilliance comes out. I wish SONY would release this one domestically. From what I've read on the internet, they could have a good seller on their hands.

"A feast of heavy, pulsing reggae ... next to any vintage record from the likes of Spear, Marley or Tosh, you'll find it on par with those noble predecessors." -- CMJ New Music Report
Overwhelmingly authentic, Rasta-inspired reggae with crushing grooves, mesmerizing lyrics, and razor-sharp social commentary. Reissue of the most acclaimed, rootsy album from Midnite's plethora of releases. Includes three of Midnite's greatest hits: "Lion Wears the Crown," "Love Right, Live Right," and "Foolish and the Wise." The first-ever reggae CD recorded entirely without artificial enhancements--no overdubs, EQ, or electronic reverb.
Customer Reviews:
The recording environment matched Midnite's pure music playing.......2006-12-20
I personally got a chance to visit the recording studio in Upper Marlboro, Md. where this production was created. Oh my god! - Yes, I sweared! The strive for perfection in capturing the moment, and the dedication to capturing the true, honest, live, and closeup club environment sound was definitely achieved. I pray that Midnite requests that Maple Shade Records record again for them. Amazon's previews do not serve justice to the quality of sound. Someone commented here that the bassist appeard to be playing mostly on the left side of the soundstage/speaker. I guess you are saying that all of the sound should come from the middle of the stage, or two speakers? I think the sound should appear to come from where the actual player was standing? Maple Shade is serious about capturing their live recordings as they visually appear on the stage (capturing the true moment). Maple Shade Records has relocated to Baltimore, Md., due to development sprawl getting too close to their quiet rural wooded recording location. Midnite recorded this CD without any edits. With Maple Shade you have to get it correct the first time because it is going straight to the old school reel to reel tape. Maple Shade uses tube amps, speaker cables lifted off of the floor and some more. The simple heavy, tight, mesmerizing tones in this CD causes you to listen while in a continuous trance. Thanks Pierre for recording such a great hit.
Sound quality gives it 3.5 stars.......2006-11-03
The most unique thing about this CD is the recording and sound. Very simple, 2 channel to analog. The natural ambience is palpable, with a pronounced stereo effect. Lovely sounding. That said, it is a bit disconcerting that they panned the bass guitar almost completely to the left. You would never get such an effect hearing a live band. And the drums sound too acoustic really. They should have used a kick drum mic inside a damped shell, IMO.
In terms of the music, the vibe is solid. Mostly one-drop style, with nary a bridge or chorus to be found. The songs are overly simplistic...there could be more contrast in this album. The drummer needs to accentuate, using cymbals more. The bass and guitar are the best instruments. Still, a very interesting sound.
The only Reggae review I'm going to do.......2006-01-12
This is Midnite's only CD done with Wildchild, a very small but very good independent label. The sound is clear and uncluttered, without the usual audio tricks found on almost all audio tracks. It seems to have inspired the band to do something special. The lyrical content, the instrumental and vocal delivery, make this the best release Midnite has done yet. I consider Ras Mek Peace to be one of the top ten Reggae CDs of all time. This is not hyperbole. Amazon allows you to preview the CD through Windows Media Player. Judge for yourself. I would not normally review a popular music CD, but some ignorant comments were made about this group that required a response. If your are trying to find this CD, try Ernie B's Reggae site. The prices are fair and the service is excellent. (The sellers at Amazon appear to be stocking the gold-plated versions of Ras Mek Peace.)
"Who feels it knows it." - Bunny Livingston.......2005-10-23
In light of their prolific output of consistently moving roots reggae, their creative genius, precise musicianship, and inspiring message, one can only guess that the only two reasons Midnite has not achieved global superstardom are (1) they are from St. Croix, Virgin Islands, and not Jamaica, and (2) they do not want global superstardom. True to their religious beliefs, they realize that global superstardom is empty and not worth their aspirations. I feel certain that the more juvenile reviews ("They're great! "No, they're not!" "You suck!") posted here do not reflect the tenets of the music its "supporters" claim to appreciate. Universal peace and love is the way. Respect for all. To each his own. Make your choice and move.
"Ras Mek Peace" (and the rest of this band's work) demonstrates musically the Rastafarian faith in its purest essence, unashamedly. Dark brown wood roots grow from the soles of the feet of the artists who make up Midnite, digging deep into the sands of St. Croix, trees of truth whose fruits are falling slowly, one by one, on all the lands of this desperate Creation.
Greatest Roots Reggae Album Ever Made!!!!!.......2005-03-10
My review title says it all. I own thousands of reggae cd's dating back to Count Ossie, Lord Creator, Judge Dread and even young man you may have heard of: Bob Marley.
Anyway. Midnite is the greatest thing to happen to the reggae movement in years. Groundation is: Incredible, John Brown's Body is: Phenomenal, But Midnite is: Biblical!!!!!!
So the guy down below Jaco Roesch, that calls Midnite insipid, and claims that Groundation is a better reggae band, just remember this, I've met Harrison Stafford, the lead singer of Groundation, at 3 different Midnite shows, and he considers Midnite to be one of the best.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is, well, if Amazon.com will let me sat it: Jaco, you're an idiot.
Respect.

Rollicking good ska.......2007-05-07
Oddly, this one was a sleeper. High-energy, but not frenetic like Save Ferris or others, this album really packs a punch. Hard to compare, but warmer melodies than most, maintaining the infectious pace. Very good stuff. An essential for any ska collector.
Retro 80's. Nice flashback vibe of ska & soul, Like no other........2006-07-27
This is a super album. Not to diss the British but The UNTOUCHABLES master that soul/ska sound better than THE ENGLISGH BEAT. "I Confess" is the only song I can deal with by them. The UNTOUCHABLES are far more intelleGENT with their sound selection. Favorites "I Spy For The F.B.I.", "Freak In The Streets", "What's Gone Wrong", "Free Yourself" etc. I'm not dissing the BEAT but with that beat, they need some UNTOUCHABLE soul..like this!!!!
Great collection - horrible quality.......2006-07-09
As much as I love The Untouchables and was dying for someone to put all their classics to CD, this is not what I thought I'd be typing here. Cherry Red's remastering has terrible sound quality. Compared to the original vinyls, it sounds like you're listeing to these songs through giant ear muffs. None of the edge and liveliness, neither the great guitar kicks nor the low beaty thumps, that IS the distinct Untouchable sound gets conveyed here.
Excellant UT cd!.......2006-03-03
For all of you LA based ska-brothers this is an excellant CD! This CD has almost all of UT's good songs! The only songs missing are The General, Tropical bird, Twist & crawl and Dance beat (the singles). This is a "can't miss" cd!
Ahh...to be a college freshman again........2006-01-06
Man, these guys were so happenin'. A little Ska, a little reggae, a little Stax/Motown. What might have happened if these guys got the shine they deserved...
The CD puts a smile on my face every time I play it.
Buy it. Play it loud. Dance around like the kid you know is still inside.

These kids sing like angels! I am so glad I purchased this CD for my holiday collection.Great price also!
WOW - one of the best !!!.......2006-11-08
What a great album - fun arrangements, beautiful harmonies. This is one of the best Christmas albums I have heard or bought in a long time. "Gloria" will be one of my favorite tracks from now on. This album is all I expected and more. If you love Christmas music then you need this album.
Moving.......2006-09-23
I have been a progressive Hard rock heavy metal singer for over 19 years. I am a lover of harmonies no matter what instrument is doing them. I first heard this album (specifically the song African Gloria) while browsing in Yankee Candle's "Black forest" room. I was moved by that song and I still am when I hear the clip now. I immediately ordered it. What I can say is that these kids are not doing any easy tasks...I am a singer and I know what it takes to get the harmonies and dynamics what they are. I give them 2 thumbs up and urge them to always continue. Childrens choirs are wonderful and in my opinion spark a Holy part of us. 5 stars!
This cd is simply PERFECT!.......2005-12-13
My husband and I opened this cd and played it for the first time tonight. It was like hearing a choir of angels. I am dead serious when I say that I have NEVER heard voices as beautiful as the Von Trapp children. I have just orded two more of their cd's, and I intend to order everything they record. DO NOT miss this one. It is an absolute gem!

Customer Reviews:
A great cover of a 'Tom & Jerry' Classic.......2005-10-21
Most people don't know this... but this is actually a cover of a Louis Jordan hit best known for its lampoon in a 1946 cartoon: Tom & Jerry's 'Solid Serenade'. I have fond memories of the scene where Tom is serenading some pussycat with this little ditty, only to have Jerry foil his plans. To hear it recreated so wonderfully is quite a kick.
A grand swingin' time.......2003-09-14
Amazon limits reviews to just a thousand words, so I'll be brief. Listen to this CD! Put it down for a day. Come back to it a day later and listen again. Yep, it's as good the first time you heard it. Probably better. These guys, excuse me and gal, sing and swing. J. Gordon Holt of Stereophile fame once said, and I paraphrase, "if it doesn't make your toe tap, it's not music." Well, this stuff makes your toe tap, your head bop and weave and heck you might even kick the rug back and swing the wife about a bit.
The group is tight. They know their music and don't pretend to know anything other swing. No bossa nova retro be bop hoot and holler stuff. This music takes you back to when a tune was a tune and the lyrics made sense. No special messages, just a tune that rattles around in brain for hours on end. And here's the real bonus. You got to hear their vocalist, Marianna Previti. Where the Jumpers her found has got to be the real story. This is the only recording I know featuring her. Too bad, she's a keeper.
Well, Amazon doesn't provide a word counter and I'm afraid of running over. A grand swingin' group with a spectacularly recorded CD thanks to Mapleshade Records. A must listen.
Marianna Previti: Queen of Swing.......2003-02-01
This album is outstanding, due mainly to the vocal stylings of the great Marianna Previti. This three-time WAMA Wammie award-winning singer proves without a doubt that DC jazz is hottest in the world. Buy it and you'll soon learn what everyone else already knows: Marianna Previti is the Queen of Swing!!
The Real Deal.......1999-09-09
Compared to the likes of current Retro Swing Bands, that for the most part don't even come close to anything resembling the swing or jump blues bands of the 40's, it is refreshing to hear a band that for the most part, nails it.
J Street where Have You Been Hiding?.......1999-07-09
In today's music market, including the world of swing all too often bands appear who are harping on that rock n' roll early 90s sound with a swing beat. This works less often then it is tried. The J Street Jumpers are one of the few bands of late that more than play the notes on the sheet in front of them. The J Street Jumpers feel the music. This is obvious in their recent release "Is you is or is you ain't my baby?". There is an interesting sound at work here that harkens back to the decades of the 30s to the 50s. J Street owes a lot the the allure of Marianna Previti for her vocal stylings that range from Andrew Sister-esque to sounding a little like a young Ella Fitzgerald. Previti delivers her lines with of confidence a determined woman from the silver screen of the 40s. This is actually quite refreshing and something I personally have been wanting to hear from a swing band with female vocals. "Is you is..", begins with a punch with its first track Better Beware, then smoothly slides into a sultry number with Ain't But One. Arthur Gerstein, pianist also provides vocals. Gerstein's vocals on Night Life Boogie lack the knack that Previti's does, but he makes up for his vocals with his piano playing. Amazingly the J Street Jumpers cover Louis Prima's "swing version of Smells Like Teen Spirit", also known as "Jump, Jive & Wail". Here for the first time is an interesting rendition which both Gerstein and Previti share the vocal duties. For once this over-covered song almost works. Sixteen tracks are compiled on this CD, all covers, but done tastefully. Often with well placed passion for the musical execution. J Street's four horn section, upright bass, drums and a well placed electric guitar, please the ears especially on "When I Get Low I Get High" and "Sure Had A Wonderful Time Tonight." J Street, who hail from the Washington DC, visually don't look like the modern 90s swing group, although as mamma always said, "You can't judge a book by it's cover". J Street tends to play more political parties than they do night clubs which is sad, because they have become one of the best kept secrets on the east coast.
