Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
An album title like This Is Rock 'N' Roll doesn't exactly promise grand artistic ambition and high concept. Still, give the London Quireboys credit: the title emphatically delivers on its promise, however modest it may be. These Quireboys actually date back to the mid-1980s and coulda been a contender for the blues-and-boogie-rock crown that was eventually grabbed by the Black Crowes. Singer Spike Gray reconvened the band at various points and in various incarnations throughout the 1990s, but This Is Rock 'N' Roll marks the band's first new studio full-length in nearly a decade. For fans of unadulterated, unhyphenated rock with catchy hooks and thick riffs, you could certainly do a lot worse than this bunch. Sure, they sound an awful lot like the Faces--Rod Stewart rasp and all--with a touch of Mott tossed in, which will no doubt earn them cries of "Derivative!" from snootier folks, but that is their loss. As Spike himself belts out, "Y'know it's a travesty when ya just can't sing along." Amen. --Marc Greilsamer

Album Description

Said Rolling Stone, in their 4-star review:

If Modest Mouse spent a year in a Chuck E. Cheese ball pit, they might emerge sounding like the delightful Brooklyn quartet Bishop Allen. That's not to say that these indie-poppers aren't a serious band. On their debut, Charm School, the foursome blend sharp, jangly guitars with catchy melodies and big choruses. Songwriters Justin Rice and Christian Rudder write cheeky lyrics and layer their tunes with handclaps ("Charm School") and singalongs ("Ghosts Are Good Company"). And the band's carefree attitude, along with their musicianship, make Charm School as addictive as it is playful. Add drummer Margaret Miller and bassist Bonnie Karin, and they enter indie elite. Karin's ethereal backing vocals complement Rice's perfectly -- propelling already memorable tracks into charmed harmonic bliss.

5 out of 5 stars Throwing Furniture Off the Roof.......2007-07-01

"Charm School" is a delightfully silly set. It has bubbly charm of grape soda pop. It doesn't take itself seriously like on the wacky "Penitentiary Bound," "You be whatever you want to be & see whatever you think you see & take whatever you like for free & just like I've been saying every single day since I wore this suit..." "Bishop Allen Drive" is hilarious with its pop chorus and its stunningly bizarre story, "I don't know why, but she couldn't stand still; The radio was playing, it was time to kill; We were throwing furniture off the roof; We'd watch it shatter on the ground below singing la la la la..." "Things Are What You Make of Them" beats like the soundtrack to "The Tell-Tale Heart," "She said: Son, if you don't make a noise, God will never know you're there." "Empire City" & "Quarter to Three" are also diamonds. In Bishop Allen's hands, "Eve of Destruction" is remade in unique fashion. While not each track is memorable, there are so many wildly original classics that this is a disc not to be missed. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Good enough to give chills, fun enough to sing forever.......2005-10-20

If you like The Shins, Modest Mouse, or even the better songs of the Rolling Stones, I can almost guarantee you will like this album. I heard a couple of their songs online, loved them instantly, got chills up and down my arms from their emotion and their innovation, and I ordered it immediately.
This is instantly likeable music, music I knew I loved the moment I heard it. That bands like Bishop Allen aren't being hounded by every major label out there is baffling to me. This album features terrific female backing vocals, simple yet rocking and friendly songs, occasional drums by Microsoft Excel, witty lyrics, a terrific tribute/thank you song "Eve of Destruction" in which the band thanks all their friends on a day that might be their last. The album's also got funny liner notes, and one of the coolest songs I've ever heard, "Ghosts are Good Company,"
Buy "Charm School" now. Listen to the samples on Amazon, and then buy it immediately. And, if you like this, check out Soltero. Good music is out there, and waiting for you.

5 out of 5 stars Justin, David Byrne wants his gesticulations back..........2005-02-05

Ok, well Mr. Rice fully deserves any wild hand waving rights though because this is a great album. Another live-show-bought-the-album deal (the guy on the left of the album, Mr. Rudder, actually sold me it to me. Sorry amazon) the album has only continued to grow on me. I could go on about depth of lyrics, mature sound, etc., but I can't compete with a guy from Rolling Stone who probably has a degree in journalism and critical theory. Let's just say 'Charm School' is a good buy for anyone who can stand a little bit of fun and is in the midst of the mainstream doldrums. A little Atom and His Package, a little Modest Mouse (sorry), a little Hell's Kitchen, and a little art school band all grown up! Pixies beaten with an irony stick! I could go on! Fantastic stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Charming.......2004-09-30

I heard "Busted Heart" on the radio and was immediately intrigued. Checked out some of the mp3s they had on their web site and after listening to them twice, bought the album. I love it! It's in constant rotation and if I don't listen to it every few days, I crave it. Every song is great. particularly like Ghosts Are Good Company and the reprise of Things are what you make of them is gorgeous. great lyrics, fun sounds, pop with a little bit of a punk edge. If you like pop, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Good punchy Pop-Rock.......2004-08-13

I like this quirky CD a whole lot. The guitar work sounds like the strongest pop songs of Luna but with quite a bit more spark. These are fun songs that seem to take many cues from 50s rock (Little Black Ache), the best 60s psyche-pop (Charm School) as well as a mixed bag of folk and rock -- and of course some of the darker and often humorous ironies found in the lyrics of bands like King Missile. Throughout the CD, the female vocals are quite lovely, and compliment the quirky, ironic, and sometimes sublime male lead vocals quite nicely. Charm School is a creative mix of atmospheric songs, pop ballads, and the like. As I learned in my years in NYC, the best things in the city - despite the rumors - usually cross a bridge or drive through a tunnel to deliver and Bishop Allen does exactly that!

I suggest you hear a few of the complete songs on the Bishop Allen web site before you buy the disk. They have some full songs for listening.

Album Description

It's been said that Memphis is mentioned in more song titles than any other city. On In The Mood For Memphis you'll hear a diverse musical testimonial from some of Memphis' most dynamic voices. For the first time ever, a CD has been compiled celebrating the rock and blues Mecca of the world with 16 songs, each with Memphis in the title. From the mainstream "Walking In Memphis" performed by Eddie Harrison to the underground sounds of Mud Boy & the Neutrons' "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again," In The Mood For Memphis is filled with soul-pleasing, groove-controlling, guaranteed satisfaction.

Powerful and charismatic singers Gary Johns and Susan Marshall each perform different versions of the title track. Don McMinn's funky "Memphis In May" sets the mood for an exquisite rendition of "Memphis In June" by jazz diva Joyce Cobb. With Delbert McClinton on harmonica, Dan Penn's "Memphis Women and Chicken" is smooth, Southern and irresistible. You'll also hear Holly Shelton's sultry interpretation of W.C. Handy's "Memphis Blues" (followed by a haunting instrumental with The W.C. Handy Preservation Band). Songwriter Bob Cheevers adds his irresistible "Memphis Till Monday" exclaiming the virtues of good ole Memphis barbecue and fun. Gusto jumps in with a lively version of Lyle Lovett's "I've Been To Memphis." Other highlights include Daddy Mack Orr and Billy Gibson on the Chuck Berry/Johnny Rivers classic "Memphis," the soulful sounds of the Memphis All-Stars on their feel-good original "Lovely Memphis Day," and The McCarty-Hite Project's "Memphis Town." Cult rockers The Delta Queens include their raw, but fiercely independent "Memphis (Highway 72)," as the almost final track.

Patrick Dodd concludes the CD in a reflective tone with "Memphis Keeps Rolling On," a gospel-tinged pop ballad that examines the struggles and triumphs of Memphis and its legacy.

Since 1992, Inside Sounds has focused on producing the best of Memphis, from blues to alternative rock, and is the parent company of the critically acclaimed Memphis Archives label.

4 out of 5 stars Memphis moods.......2004-02-18

16 songs of and about Memphis - in fact, Memphis is in the title of each and every song.
I was a wary of this album at first but the more I thought about it, the more I understood it. Memphis' diverse musical situation needs to be celebrated and Dattel has compiled a carefully conceived and varied selection here.

Some songs will be recognized, some won't. Some were done in Memphis (most of them) and some in other places. Some songs are old, some songs are new, but for the most part it's a blues album, and since it's from Memphis, even the weak cuts are strong.

Susan Marshall's "In the Mood for Memphis" begins the album and seven songs later, we hear vocalist Gary Johns' version of the same song. Longtime player Don McMinn tells about "Memphis in May" and Joyce Cobb tells us all about "Memphis in June" in her unique.

Two songs jumped out at me and made the album worth the time - Jim Dickinson's Mud Boy and the Neutrons hammering out his friend Bob Dylan's "Stuck Inside of Mobile (With the Memphis Blues Again). " It's done with verve and vigor and I've always liked Jim's voice.

Eddie Harrison's version of "Walking in Memphis" is the best version of that Grammy-winning song I've ever heard. I remember seeing and hearing Eddie Harrison and the ShortCuts 35 years ago and thought they were great, and he's an even better singer now.
From beginning to end, the musicianship quality is top-notch and Dattel and company have an excellent CD here. If you're already from Memphis, go get this CD and celebrate your town. If you're not from Memphis, come on down! There's magic here.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pop Rock Classic!.......2002-03-02

This is one of the top five releases of the last decade. If you like early Cheap Trick, especially Heaven Tonight, you will love this. All twelve tracks rock! Super Tuesday, Calling Sydney, RU Receiving, etc, etc. I do not exaggerate. This is one of those special records. Even the great Shazam will have a hard time beating this one. This is modern power pop at its absolute finest.

4 out of 5 stars Billy Batson would be proud!.......2001-11-29

The best post-modern powerpop album I've found. Echoes of Cheap Trick, ELO, DB's and others, but the Shazam don't merely ape these forebears - they pay homage to them with well-crafted songs. The lyrics may be a bit sloppy in places, but even this looseness is endearing. I can't stop playing it.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest CD ever made.......2001-08-21

In my country Shazam is worshipped as hero of culture. The rock sounds have the learnation and learnededness of the Zander, Roy Woods, BeatleGrup and other brilliant men. Indeed, God Speed The Shazam!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful pop.......2000-11-16

This cd is a step up from their self-titled debut(and that was pretty good). Much more guitars on this one and thats a good thing. Reminds me of the Who in parts, maybe some Cheap Trick too. While loud and proud this disc never loses touch with the melodies, and choruses. It lags a bit in the end, but the first eight songs are to die for. A must buy.

5 out of 5 stars RU Receiving The Shazam? You should be..........2000-10-05

Quite simply, an outstanding second CD (IMHO) from this band out of Tennessee. They've deservedly had strong reviews in the UK music press for this release. Much has been made of influences such as legendary bands such as The Move and Cheap Trick, but the songs on this stand up by themselves, although you can hear elements of those influences in some. Excellent "power pop" and I challenge anyone to give this a try... and then *not* keep playing it over and over! It really grows on you! Hans Rotenberry proves that he is a skilled songwriter, and he is ably supported by fine musicians. I honestly recommend this CD. Terrific band, wonderful album, BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars All I can Say is WOW.......2004-08-29

This is possibly the best Rockabilly band in years and years. The two albums they have are my two greatest buys. I know rockabilly, neo, traditional whatever, Ive listened for years..this is the real deal. If you are like me, enjoying a wide variety of rockabilly, this is the band you have been hoping to find, from high energy guitar riffs, growling vocals, this is the band. I guarentee this will be in your cd tray for weeks at a time. I cant say enough about Rockin Ryan and the Realgoners, except thank you! Keep rocking!

5 out of 5 stars great late 50's style rock'n'roll and some rockabilly.......2004-08-25

This cd captures Rockin' Ryan's wild and energetic stage presence, even though these are studio recordings. Ryan sings like a rockabilly star from around 1957, but without copying any particular 50's rockabilly icon, and therefore sounding original. This cd is different from his 1st lp, which sounded like mid 50's rockabilly, this cd is late 50's and even early 60's rock'n'roll ,with a few rockabilly and western swingy sounding tracks thrown in for good measure. The highlight of this cd is without a doubt his original "Spiderlegged Baby", where the witty lryics state "I was trying to kiss her lips, I was inbetween her hips... I was trying to kiss her face, I was inbetween her waste." A great cd, and it shows that Ryan is maturing wit hwach new release, here's looking forward to his next cd.

saw these guys the other day with someone called "extreme elvis". I must tell you, he was extreem. However, no one seems to be able to top the Librarians live. Not even the King himself, now in extreme form, can touch the raw energy these guys put out. I wish there were more bands like this and I hope they all stay slightly below the radar of the masses.

4 out of 5 stars Backed up the hype.......2003-04-26

As catchy, rocking and simply impressive for a first album this is I can't give it a full five stars. But let's remeber this isn't olympic diving and a four is pretty darn good. I can say that this is one of the rare occasions where the reviews of the album were pretty dead on.

5 out of 5 stars Better and better.......2003-04-23

Not only does this album get better with every listen, it actually gets better through the album. Thank You For Me is simply incredible! I once listened to this album for three hours in a row on a late night interstate drive. It kept me both awake and rocking!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Record!.......2005-11-29

This guys can play! I can tell you that. When I first heard this band, I thought they were this huge known superband, because they souded like one! I was amazed at the way the make complex music, the sound, the melodies and the power. A must have for every ProgRock fan looking for new stuff. This surely is A+ Music. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Journey meets Dream Theater meets Rush.......2002-02-06

Summary: Buy it if you like melodies form Journey and Rush but appreciate the musical edge of Dream Theater. Don't buy it if you are looking for a progressive metal-fest.

    Great tracks: Stay

Good tracks: New Age, Start it Over, Sometimes, Change

Fair tracks: Say Goodbye, The Night, Senorita Serenade

    Bad tracks: You & Me.

The best aspects of the album are the arrangements and production. In addition, the vocals are very strong and guitar work is impressive. The vocal style is a little bit like the Fates Warning "Parallels" album if Steve Perry from the former Journey were to sing it.....and in this case it just fits perfectly with the music. The separation of backing vocals into he right and left channel is a nice touch that makes the sound stage interesting. The guitar work is not only impressive from a musical standpoint but never reaches the self-indulgent point that can make for a difficult listen. The best track on the album is "Stay" and ranks among some of the better pieces of music I have ever heard in this genre. In essence I would have given this album 5 stars but the track You & Me is weak and there are a couple of tracks with lyrics that are not quite up to par.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Progressive Rock Band!.......2001-07-14

This band has it all, great musicianship, vocals, songwriting, catchy hooks and the recording quality is really good. The artwork and band photos are nice as well. The guitar player is awesome!!! They are going to be big. There are at least three radio hits on this CD (I personally like all of the songs). No matter what kind of music you listen to I think you will like this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The New King Of Californian Cool.......2003-10-29

After the shut down of his previous label Permanent Press Walter Clevenger forms his own label Brewery and ends four years of silence with "Full Tilt & Swing". Imagine a world where The Raspberries, Buck Owens' Buckaroos , The Clarence White era Byrds and Brinsley Schwarz jam nightly and you're getting warm to "Full Tilt & Swing". Dominated by Clevenger's Nick Lowe-esque vocals and often witty songwriting and a band that loves to twang and thunder this is a CD for those who thought The Eagles eventual slickness gave L.A music a bad name. Hey, what's not to like? Non-dopey lyrics about love, guitars that take no prisoners and a front man who has real imagination...we have lift off. Just buy!!
