Any new compilation CD starring Yo-Yo Ma is certain to please. This master of the cello takes the listener through so many types of music that the ear and mind never tire. The present selection is billed as a sort of "musical autobiography," and, indeed, it gives us a tour of Ma's musical life. The Silk Road Project is represented by Zhao's "Swallow Song," with its eerie, fascinating soundscape (specially re-recorded for this CD). We also accompany Ma on his excursions into the world of the baroque cello with Vivaldi or of the Finnish folk song (by Mamiya, a first recording). There are Gershwin's languid Second Prelude, with its intimations of the song "Summertime," and an all-new recording of a nine-minute heart-breaker by Astor Piazzolla ("Soledad"). Ma also gives us more familiar Brahms, Franck, and Saint-Saens. The compilation's mellow 65 minutes offer relaxing, beautiful music, all exquisitely played. Ma is joined by the best: Emanuel Ax, Kathryn Stott, John Williams (who plays piano on his own "Going to School" from Memoirs of a Geisha), Isaac Stern, and Claudio Abbado. This is a veritable Who's Who of superb musicians. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

This is a darker collection than I expected. And like a serious, reserved friend, it can take a little longer to appreciate than the bubbly outgoing ones. I now find I like it very much, but it is serious "conversation."
There is great variety here as well, and I gave it to a friend's teenager who is considering whether she wants to learn the cello. Her response was much the same as mine. Initially not so sure, but over time, has really come to like it, too. This collection has great depth.

Depressive Pleasures .......2006-10-01
Their message is made apparent by Curtis' voice, lurching with a flat monotone, peeling the listeners' emotion away like a vagrant soul found in the pages of an Edgar Allen Poe story. Moreover, this relic of mirth is at the heart of the lyrical themes that range from betrayal, death, depression, religion, and crumbling sanity. This downbeat sensibility has the somberness of the broken-hearted youth in a Shakespearean tragedy, and the damnable suffering of a villain's final breath in the climax of a Jacobean revenge story. The "all is not well in wonderland" angst is apparent on Pleasure's opener, the emotionally withdrawn song, Disorder. Containing the daring first lyric, " I am waiting for the guide to come and take me by the hand," the refrain shows a loss of touch with reality, leading to a lust for death. It is this blur between the earthbound and the empyreal that makes "Joy Division" a landmark band that would set up the groundwork for other genres, such as Goth.
Bassist Peter Hook, drummer Stephen Morris, and guitarist Bernard Albrecht perform the sonic atmospherics. This British triple-threat adds to this emotional masterpiece of dark delicacies constructed from a vortex of fractured passions and disbanded ecstasies. Working as a collective whole, the members brandish a high concepted, yet refined minimalism in their sound that fluctuates from dizzyingly kinetic, to a subdued, unsettled tone; and it is in the passionate musical arrangements that a cough of life emerges. "Joy Division's" classical merit is an absolute, they are a fever-pitch of decadence, and a masterful band that transmitted their social concerns and lack of faith in the system into their music. Speaking on the unjust tragedy of Curtis' suicide, the audience must understand that true art is an emotional outlet for someone's own frustrations in the world, and no matter how blurred with reality it may be, art is always a form of self-expression, and communication. Thus by turning our back on the artists' views, because of their personal problems, we in turn dehumanize that person.
Moreover, despite their gloom-drenched aura, "soul" and "diversity" is at the hull of the band. The music itself speaks; frankly, re-animating the emotional somberness only for the album to stop spinning in the player, but not in the listeners' mind. Unknown Pleasures is not just a masterpiece of music, but rather an experience that brought artistry into the post-punk sound, and made it an emotional tool to break your heart, to then enclose the fragments in darkness. R.I.P. Ian Curtis

This enchanting, flavorful CD finds the ever curious Yo-Yo Ma traveling to South America, and Brazil in particular. The music varies from classical to samba to bossa nova; the combinations range from guitar, flute, and cello to female voice (the remarkable Rosa Passos), cello, guitar, percussion, piano, and bass; to simple cello and piano; to cello and two guitars. The overriding element is rhythm; each selection has a beat which is both infectious and sensual, but the contexts are splendidly varied. "Dansa brasileira" has a Debussy-like, impressionistic flavor, "Dansa negra" is sultry with an easy melody, "1 x 0" is a dance scored for guitar, percussion, and cello with a solo clarinet riff. It's impossible to get bored or tired listening to this creative CD; it's unique--just like Yo-Yo Ma himself--and endlessly surprising. It may not be quite what we'd call "classical" music, but it is many kinds of music, and they all will delight. The other musicians are as impressive on their instruments as Ma is with his cello, and that's saying a great deal. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
Although this collection intends to transport the soul, it has a tremendously potent low-end depth to it that earns high marks indeed in the worlds of vocal and liturgical music. Dmitri Bortniansky's "Hymn of the Cherubim" is performed with a gracefulness that gets a warming fatness from the production, as does Alexander Gretchaninov's "I Have Chosen the Blissful," which travels with a ringing resonance. In a year of fine choral works--check out Sequentia's Hildegard cycle box, 900 Years or Arvo Pärt's Kanon Pokajanen for a "something old, something new" mix--this collection is highly valued for its sonic integrity and its excellent anthological mix. --Andrew BartlettAmazon.com
Words cannot describe poignantly enough the exquisite, angelic voices that permeate the heart and exalt the soul on Sacred Treasures. The most highly regarded Russian and Bulgarian choirs sing the hymns of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Lvovski, and other composers in the Russian Orthodox Church's tradition of "Divine Worship" (worship through chant). From the first tolling bells that open the CD with a willowy, floating piece from Rachmaninov's Liturgy of St. John, to the final bells closing the door on "Hymn of the Cherubim" (Grigory Lvovski), this CD creates a gentle, distinctly Byzantine glory. The rhythms slowly wisp along while the choirs' baritones, tenors, and sopranos mesh into one expansive blessing. Meant to comprehensively gather not all Russian liturgical pieces but rather hymns that emote an inner tranquility and celestial grace, Sacred Treasures plays like a piece of heaven on Earth. --Karen KarleskiCustomer Reviews:

Divine Beauty and Peace! .......2006-12-03
In many cases, I chose to use excerpts from longer pieces, omitting the exultant huge crescendos and very fast sections that are typical of Russian sacred music, presenting only the slow and quiet verses. One reviewer complained about the omission of the final (loud and fast) part of the Cherubic hymns, saying this is the best part, but I completely disagree! I feel that the slow "adagio" sections are by far the most beautiful parts, and that is what you will hear on these CDs.
Different types of music serve different needs, and in today's stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world--to "lay aside all earthly cares" (as the "Cherubic Hymns" on this CD prescribe) and to rest in a magical, quiet space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of these albums, including this one, "SACRED TREASURES: Choral Masterworks from Russia"!
A Soviet version of Russian music.......2006-05-29
Because of Stalin's efforts to cleanse the country of the influence of religion, many musicians and composers were sent to Siberia. They were replaced with those from peasant backgrounds. The result was a huge change in how classical Russian music was performed, becoming less subtle, more interested in brute power and flash.
This recording features a massive and powerful choir. But the listener mostly hears a series of vowel sounds, with the consonants lost in the shuffle. Dynamic range is not as large as it could be. Phrasing is largely absent and we hear a steady wall of sound instead. Precision of rhythm is spotty, what consonants we do hear are frequently smeared. Pitch and richness of tone are good, but on high notes, inevitably given the size of the choir, some members strain.
Having performed and recorded Tchaikovsky's Liturgy I am very familiar with the piece. But listening to this recording of excerpts from it I sometimes barely recognized it as the same work. Tchaikovsky gives us great artistry, frequently crecendos and decrecendos on a single phrase. Each choral voice comes and goes like a wave, not all together like a tsunami in all but a few places. The balance of voices is constantly moving.
I encourage you to listen to the samples available here of the Russian Chamber Chorus's recording of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy, compare the same pieces. This recording is more a Vegas neon version of this great artwork than the fine art it deserves to be shown as. James Oestreich, the New York Times critic, put the Russian Chamber Chorus recording at #4 on his top ten list of classical releases for 2001, and said that if you had not heard it "You only think you know Tchaikovsky."
I hope you give the real Russian classical tradition a listen. It deserves your time, and it will pay you back with a huge amount of pleasure.

Follow-up to 2004's 'Da Unbreakables' from Memphis-born duoJuicy J and DJ Paul. Includes the single 'Stay Fly.Customer Reviews:

Not very creative or interesting; a sub par effort by Three 6 Mafia.......2007-05-26
Nevertheless, Three 6 Mafia have actually been around for awhile, and I've heard their singles in the past. Although they were mostly immature and disposable, they could provide a good amount of entertainment. However, 'Most Known Unknown', the group's most recent effort, falls below the standards I've expected from it (not to say they were very high). I at least expected to be entertained, but I mostly found myself skipping the track and the bulk of the songs sound like they just run into each other. A very repetitive album, 'Stay Fly' and 'Poppin' My Collar' are the songs that stand out the most, but even those aren't outstanding. The skits advertising other artist's records confirms that Three 6 Mafia weren't looking to produce an artistic classic here, and this is yet another boring southern release.
Although it's a definite cut above trash like Young Joc and the like (though that isn't saying much), it's still an immensely boring record when it's all said and done.
Nothing extraordinary, but solid.......2007-03-18
I guess I'll have to review this a second time.........2006-10-20
While this album isn't classic, it is one of the finest mainstream releases in the last few years. It doesn't hold the same horrorcore lyrics found in their classic albums, such as Mystic Stylez or Da End, nor does it contain the same triple-cadence raps; what it does provide is DJ Paul and Juicy J's immortally dope production with catchy lyrics provided by the remaining members of the Three 6 Mafia.
Songs like Stay Fly, as well as it's remix, are undeniably catchy. They may not represent the best Three 6 has ever done, but it does show that Paul and J continue to make innovative music. Other songs on this album are considerably darker, at least musically, including "P' Got Ya Hooked," "Knock The Black Off Yo A'," "Got It 4 Sale," "Half On A Sack," "Body Parts III," "Swervin'," and "Roll With It." Also, more infectious and innovative tracks come from "Side 2 Side" and "Poppin' My Collar."
Also, to a reviewer below me, as I stated in my intial review, Three 6 Mafia have been together for well over a decade as it is; saying you doubt they'll be together in ten years, let alone making music is pure ignorance. If you're going to comment on a product, or group, you should at least know enough about their history in order to do so properly.
Nonetheless, this is a great album from the Triple Six Mafia. I know this review could've been better, but I didn't feel like writing the entire thing over. Hopefully, this will be give you enough information about the album in order to be helpful.

Album Description
Christopher Parkening, whose remarkable life and career were recently chronicled in his autobiography and companion CD, Grace Like a River, described the young baritone Jubilant Sykes as "phenomenally gifted". Through the years, as Christopher and Jubilant's friendship grew, so did the scope of their individual careers. The two performed together in concert quite frequently so the idea of recording together seemed a natural progression. When Christopher Parkening and Jubilant Sykes walked into Capitol Studios' famous Studio A, where so many legendary artists have recorded, something special was going to happen. This recording, aptly named Jubilation, is a musical journey through Brazil, Spain and the Americas.Customer Reviews:

Product Description
Studies prove that the music of Mozart has a powerful effect on the intellectual and creative development of children. Don Campbell, musician, teacher and author of the new book The Mozart Effect for Children and The Mozart Effect, has selected some of the best of Mozart's music to stimulate and inspire young minds. Based on up-to-date medical and psychological research in creativity and intelligence, the pieces on each recording have been carefully chosen by the author so that tempos, key signatures and textures of the music change with each selection in order to provide a rich listening and learning experience for children of all ages.Amazon.com
Two hundred years after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's death, French physician Dr. Tomatis discovered a relationship between listening and learning. Remarkably, he found that children develop their listening ability in the womb. According to medical studies, we now know that the music of Mozart in particular has a profound effect on the human mind, body, and spirit. Working in accordance with this philosophy, internationally known teacher and musician Don Campbell wrote The Mozart Effect, a seminal book correlating music with health, well-being, and increased intelligence. Campbell's musical collection of the same name presents compositions carefully chosen for the benefit of children. Volume 1, "Tune Up Your Mind," is formulated to gently stimulate young minds. Volume 2, "Relax, Daydream, and Draw," includes excerpts from Symphony Nos. 6 and 18, and volume 3, "Mozart in Motion," a delightfully playful disc, includes an excerpt from The Magic Flute. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:

Bringforth the artist within by listening to Mozart.......2005-10-07
The more I listen to Mozart, according to his arrangement, the more I'm convinced. The Mozart Effect: Music for Children, Volume 1-3 is an excellent prescription for the young and older mind, alike.
Absolute nonsense.......2005-03-06
"The Mozart Effect is an example of how science and the media mix in our world. A suggestion in a few paragraphs in a scientific journal becomes a universal truth in a matter of months, eventually believed even by the scientists who initially recognized how their work had been distorted and exaggerated by the media. Others, smelling the money, jump on the bandwagon and play to the crowd, adding their own myths, questionable claims, and distortions to the mix."
"The idea for the Mozart Effect originated in 1993 at the University of California, Irvine, with physicist Gordon Shaw and Frances Rauscher, a former concert cellist and an expert on cognitive development. They studied the effects on a few dozen college students of listening to the first 10 minutes of the Mozart Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K.448). They found a temporary enhancement of spatial-temporal reasoning, as measured by the Stanford-Binet IQ test. No one else has been able to duplicate their results. One researcher commented that the "very best thing that could be said of their [Shaw's and Rauscher's] experiment-were it completely uncontested-would be that listening to bad Mozart enhances short-term IQ" (Linton). Rauscher has moved on to study the effects of Mozart on rats. Both Shaw and Rauscher have speculated that exposure to Mozart enhances spatial-reasoning and memory in humans. "
Note that the only scientific tests were performed on college students.
If you want to listen to Mozart, great. Just buy a CD that does not insult your intelligence by making ridiculous claims.

"After DArk" this gets even better.......2007-07-11
Although consistent for the memorable songs and albums Blue Oyster Cult's recording output can be split into two realms. The first encompasses the intelligent metal and often-esoteric sounds of the self-titled LP, Tyranny And Mutation, Secret Treaties and the live On Your Feet Or On Your Knees. Phase two entered with the 1976 break through Agents Of Fortune.
June of 1981 "Fire Of Unknown Origin" hit the record shelves and the faithful weren't disappointed. From the opening notes of the rock and roll title cut, it was evident that band was on the right track. "Burnin' For You" was not only a tremendous entry into the singles chart but filled with well constructed lyrics. For old-timers like me the reference to the days of 45 RPM's "Time to play B-sides" was an example of how much went into the lyrical content. With the catchy riff, it deserved every second of airplay it received then. A tribute to its longevity is the frequency classic-rock stations will play the tune today. "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars" is often haunting in the construction of the song. Thanks to science-fiction genius and friend of both Hawkwind and BOC, Michael Moorcock made his presence felt in a big way. Ripping your eyes out before you blink twice "Heavy Metal-The Black And Silver" is a track that we listened to a multitude of times to absorb the firepower. "Joan Crawford" was emanating from a plethora of radios in 1981. How could you not be entranced with the lyrical and music combination?
There should never be anything unknown about the fire from Summer 1981.
Enjoy the music and be well,

One of BOCs 3 best albums (post-Black/White Trilogy).......2007-01-27
NEVER THE SAME AGAIN.......2006-02-21
1981 BEGINS THE TIME THAT B.O.C. WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN. THIS WAS THE YEAR THAT ALBERT BOUCHARD WAS DISMISSED FROM B.O.C.
ALBERT WAS THE "LUNATIC GENIUS" OF THE BAND WITH HIS SONGS, VOCALS, LIGHT DRUMMING...HE WAS THE "KEITH MOON" OF B.O.C. IT SEEMS THE BEST ALBUMS OF THIS BAND WERE THE ONES WHERE EVERY MEMBER HAD A SONG CONTRIBUTION ON IT AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM.
BOC at the top of their game.......2006-02-08
The good side of all this is I get to see them in concert at more intimate venues for far less now that they are not a major act anymore. It's a little consolation, anyway.
