5 out of 5 stars A long underrated and long deleted album/CD.......2005-09-03

Duke made this recording back in early 1963 in Paris. Atlantic (the original label) didn't see fit to release it until 1977 (3 years after Ellington passed away). Let me tell you, it was one of the recordings that got me hooked on jazz. And to add insult to injury, the CD version didn't come out until 2004; what were record executives thinking? Anyway, it's finally here in CD form and it's great for lots of reasons.

For starters, the instrumentation: 2 violins, viola, piano, bass, drums, and with some brass on the 2nd half. Stephane Grappelli, Ray Nance, both on violin, and Svend Assussen on viola, handle the strings with superb ensemble work, accompaniment, and soloing. These guys prove that violins, violas, even cellos can swing with the best of them when they're in the right hands. It's also interesting to hear how each string player swings and improvises, but with a sound distinctive from the other 2.

Duke is right on tops of things directing the whole show from the piano chair. Ernie Shepperd, the bassist, provides solid bass lines and a wonderful syncronized vocal-bass solo, a la Slam Stewart, on Take the A Train, but he's humming and plucking instead of humming and bowing.

Lastly, there are combination of familiar and more obscure Ellington compositions in this collection. For those of you who know that Ellington is the greatest composer and one of the greatest pianists that America ever had, in any genre, this is an essential or near-essential CD to buy. Like all great jazz, it hasn't dated at all.

Released in early 1961, Sinatra's Swingin' Session!!! is one of the last albums the Chairman of the Board made for Capitol before leaving for Reprise. Like most of Sinatra's Capitol recordings, this one shows the singer at the peak of his vocal and interpretive abilities. Nelson Riddle's hard-swinging arrangements of standards like Rodgers and Hart's "Blue Moon," Irving Berlin's "Always," and Cole Porter's "You Do Something to Me" would leave most vocalists in the dust, but Sinatra masters them without ever seeming to break a sweat. The CD reissue includes three outtakes from the original sessions, including a sly version of "Old MacDonald" that places a special emphasis on "chicks" but has nothing at all to do with barnyard animals. --Dan Epstein

4 out of 5 stars Sinatra on Capitol.......2007-01-25

I prefer Sinatra during his Capitol years. His voice and orchestrations are superb. A must have for a Sinatra collector.

3 out of 5 stars For Completist's Only -- Buy the earlier Capitol Stuff First.......2006-12-20

I didn't know about the history of the session, but what struck when listening to it was that Frank just seems to be putting in another day's work at the office, and that he isn't singing or swinging with the special phrasing that makes him so special. In other words, he's phoning it in.

That said, it is still a fun album, and if you are a fan of Mr. Sinatra, it's worth picking up - just buy the earlier Capitol Stuff first.

5 out of 5 stars Sinatra At His Swingin' Peak.......2006-08-02

"Sinatra's Swingin' Session" finds the Chairman of the Board at the peak of his powers. With a strong assist from Nelson Riddle, he nails one classic after another: "When You're Smiling," "It All Depends on You," "My Blue Heaven" and "Always." This 1961 recording was one of Sinatra's last for Capitol and it remains among his best. In terms of vocal mastery, nothing from Reprise comes close.

4 out of 5 stars Sinatra in top form.......2005-08-02

a very good recording in the top range of a mature sinatra
presentation and again an excellent band leader Neal Hefti

5 out of 5 stars "Though Spring Is Here, To Me It's Still September...".......2005-05-30

"Frank Sinatra is the most gifted singer of his generation and, as time has shown, the single greatest interpreter of popular song we ever have had the pleasure of hearing." ~ Pete Welding

When I was about eight years old, a classmate of mine from grade school asked me "What's your favorite song?" And when I replied, "I like all the songs by Frank Sinatra." She said, "Who's Frank Sinatra and what are the songs he sung?" This goes without saying that I was exposed to the music of Mr. Sinatra at an early age. And I have learned to appreciate his music through constantly hearing his LPs from my late father's collection when I was growing up. I have loved his music and him as an artist and interpreter of the Great American Songbook. He was truly a one-of-a-kind Entertainer of the Century. And no other singers can surpass him. He maybe gone and missed but not forgotten.

"Sinatra's Swingin' Session!!! And More" is one of my very favorite CDs from my Sinatra collection. The arrangements by none other than the greatest orchestrator of all-time, Nelson Riddle, are the sprightliest and swingiest from among all the Sinatra and Riddle collaborations.

Listening to "Always," an Irving Berlin composition, brings back nostalgic moments to me. This has been one of my late parents' theme songs (the others are "Love Is Here To Stay," "Embraceable You" and "Let Me Call You Sweetheart"). Harry Warren & Al Dubin's "September In The Rain" is very affecting and one of the most poignant ballads I've ever heard.

"To every word of love
I heard you whisper
The raindrops seem to play a
a sweet refrain...
Though spring is here
To me, it's still September
That September in the rain...
That September that brought the pain...
That September in the rain."

The rest of the tracks are all fabulous but my highlights are the danceable "My Blue Heaven," "When You're Smiling," "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me," "It All Depends On You" and "You Do Something To Me." "Sentimental Baby," a composition by Alan and Marilyn Bergman & Lew Spence is a schmaltzy song but a nice one.

Get this CD and be ready to swing with Mr. Sinatra! You'll absolutely enjoy listening to it as much as I do.

Nat "King" Cole endured more than his share of scorn and rebuke from all manner of fans and critics. He wasn't jazzy enough to satisfy many, not white enough to please the pop cultural obsession with Anglo- and Euro-American stardom. In answer to all of this, Cole simply proceeded, crooning beautifully even after he'd walked away from the piano and become primarily a vocal sensation. This 1956 collection is famous as Cole's riposte to the critique that he wasn't jazzy. The session brings several Swing Era stars on board: violinist Stuff Smith, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, trombonist Juan Tizol, and alto saxophonist Willie Smith. The horns and violin fronted a semistandard jazz setup of guitar, drums, and percussion, along with Cole's own considerable chops on piano. As an improviser, Cole heavily influenced a generation of ivory ticklers, including Oscar Peterson and others, and here he shows himself a stellar pianist. His runs bespeak Cole's utter perfection on the keyboard. This is a crucial document. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars 'And Still...The King..'.......2006-12-18

I've been wearing this out-and I don't know who's in his league as an entertainer;actually,I think it's a toss-up between Nat-and Louis Armstrong-for 'the greatest' title.Just as it's a tough call to decide whether I prefer Armstrong's playing-or singing,I'd say the same about Nat(I've played his 'instrumental classics' cd for several people;all of them have done a double take.."That's Nat King Cole..?"). This cd is a very balanced work as to what Cole is about(aside fronm the 'Ramblin' Rose'stuff-and,who beats him as a pop singer?,anyway).Maybe, even more importantly,I think I'd enlist him as the number one weapon against illiteracy-and-the general mangling of the English language...nah,with Nat,you can understand every word...whoops..syllable-perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars A unique Nat King Cole collection.......2006-02-12

There is some great stuff here that you won't find anywhere else, including one of my favorites, "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" (Lavene/Nast/Hadamik), that I simply can't find anywhere else and sheet music for it doesn't seem to exist. Willie Smith plays some sweet sax, too.

5 out of 5 stars better than a greatest hits CD.......2005-10-07

"greatest hits" collections are nice but usually they have a quality of being too familiar. These are just familiar enough. These songs became standards, and the title says it all. After midnight has a relaxed quality to Nat's piano playing. Not to be rushed, he sings with ease of a late night jam with enough intensity to warm your insides. "You can depend on me" alone is worth the entire purchase price and you still get 17 more songs!!!

5 out of 5 stars After Midnight.......2005-08-17

I don't believe I have ever heard a bad recording of his, but this is exceptionally inspiring for any Nat Cole fan.

5 out of 5 stars If you think you know Nat "King" Cole..........2005-03-15

If you only know King Cole through his big, heavily orchestrated hits, then you don't know him all that well.
"After Midnight" showcases the extraordinary talent of this man as a vocalist and pianist, with spare, perfect accompaniment by top-notch jazzmen. It is a treasure to discover, and rediscover with every listening.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent choice for both dancers and listeners.......2006-04-21

The Swing Session strikes a near perfect balance of rhythm. You can safely throw this disc on at your swing dance party - Diga Diga Doo and Saxawoogie are quick and fun. Other tracks (April in Arkansas, Katy Did) are a little slower, but still entertaining (with their lyrics, not just the music), so you can play it in the background just for the big band era atmosphere. I've been playing this disc for weeks, and now I'm lending it to all my swing-dancing friends. A solid addition to your music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! Great Lindy Hop Music!!!.......2004-03-09

These boys swing with the best of them. Their covers are just as good, if not better than, the originals. And their original songs sound so much like period songs that I'm not sure if one is new or old until I take a look at the liner notes! This is a world-class band. Erv's sax has never sounded better. Pop's vocals are gritty, yet smooth. When these boys play, you better make sure you've got room to dance, because you won't be able to control your feet. This is one of my prized CDs. "White Cliffs of Dover" and "Saxawoogie" are my current faves, but not by much. Every cut is a gem.

5 out of 5 stars Surprising smooth swing.......2003-01-23

These guys love to swing and it shows. As with their first album "The Swing Session" it took me a bit getting used to, but once the penny dropped "Whispering Grass" didn't leave my cd player for weeks (and still listening almost daily). You can't sit still listening to them, that's for sure. It's a perfect mix of vocals and instrumentals and everything swings. Nothing hard, all very smooth.
I think this album is better than their first: more melodious, more rythmic (for lack of a better word), beautiful arrangements and a better overal production.
But, hey, these words are so boring. Stop reading and go listen to this beauty!

5 out of 5 stars the best swing cd in the world.......2002-03-06

I hope that if you read this review you will take a minute to listen to the samples of this awsome CD.
I absolutely love it. Since the day I first danced to the sounds of Swing Session band in San Francisco, I fell in love with their unique style and became addicted to swing dancing. I could not wait for the Whispering Grass CD to come out. "Whispering Grass" is my absolutely favorite song. I also love the " How come", the "White cliffs of dover" and "After all i've been to you". These songs make my heart swing.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect jam.......2006-11-09

Brilliant music from multitalented cross-generation group of jazz giants:
Granz style sessions of this sort (particularly at festivals) sometimes went overboard with honkin, screeching and squeeking, but this is rhythmically extremelly potent and yet tasteful affair.
Roy Eldridge gives a great performance for this late a stage of his career, with lot of growling fire and incinerating high tones, Johnny Griffin, one of the fastests guns in modern jazz tenor sax field lets loose with one eye on the glorious jazz tradition. Then there is Milt Jackson who gave blues and energy to the Modern Jazz Quartet, explosive Louis Bellson and the greatest Danish invention since Dreyer and Douglas Sirk: Niels Henning Oersted Pedersen on bass.
Basie sets the tone, playing some more than fine piano, but the whole group is jumping, connecting the present with the past in glorious performances of Parker's "Bilie's Bounce", collective impro effort "Festival Blues" and the brilliant "Lester Leaps In", a heritage of Basie's greatest tenor collaborator...
The shortest song clocks at 11.58, so there is plenty of magnificent mainstream jazz on this heated CD.

5 out of 5 stars hard swingin.......2002-01-29

Everyone is taking long, energetic solos in front of a lively crowd. Johnny Griffin wails on his tenor sax. Roy Eldridge creates some amazing sounds on his trumpet. Bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen swings as hard ever and takes amzing solos. Milt Jackson plays long creative riffs. Louis Bellson takes an awesome solo on "Lester Leaps In" after trading fours. And then, ofcourse, the Count: his performance is too amazing, and on "Lester Leaps In" he begins the song with 4 choruses of own special 'stride' piano which was popular in jazz' early days.

The songs performed are the
1. quick paced blues- "Billies Bounce" (Charlie Parker)
13'35"
2. the more relaxed "Festival Blues" (Basie, et al)
11'54"
3. "Lester Leaps In" (Lester Young) based off of Ive Got Rhythm 16'06"

5 out of 5 stars You Ain't Got a Thing If You Ain't Got This Swing.......2004-08-17

I ordered a whole wad of neo-swing type music from Amazon within about 2 weeks & this was by far my favorite of the lot. It is very authentic sounding, yet still has its own flavor. The band does an excellent job with its cover material, my favorite being the "5 Months, 2 Weeks". I am a big Louie Prima fan & was hesitant to check out anyone else doing his material, but these boys do him proud. Their original stuff is just as good. I just ordered the Stompy Jones CD, which is this band's new incarnation, & it has 2 more Prima covers. This is an incredible, talented band & a treat to listen to. Buy this!! I enjoy them much more than hipster outfits like Royal Crown Revue (fun, but they try too hard with all that faux gangsterism) & Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (more fun, & a servicable cover of "Minnie the Moocher). Lavay Smith is wonderful; her voice is incredible & her band very very good, so buy both her CD's at once. She redlines the sass-o-meter & gets every gal in touch with her inner Miss Thing. I was lukewarm in my response to Lily Wilde, but that one's growing on me. She lacks Lavay's soulful range & flirts a bit with a Broadway musicalish delivery that turns me off a little. Keep it dirtier & you'll have it, Lily. By all means stay away from Johnny Favorite! He looks like his mobbed-up dad bought him a swing outfit to play with & while his voice is okay, his lyrics are extremely silly ("Rootbeer & licorice, 50 cents to spare, sometimes I swing all night, sometimes I wouldn't dare") and his arrangements are tired. He does have a cute cover of Led Zepplin's "Black Dog," but it doesn't touch Dread Zepplin nohow. There's a one-stop shopping list for y'all: Swing Session/Stompy Jones & Lavay Smith are at the top! Beyond that, go for the immortals like Billie, Ella, Ellington, & the big swing outfits. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Great music for dancing or listening! Everybody will love it.......2004-02-06

Swing Session burst onto the swing scene right as one of the most popular of the small-group swing bands, Indigo Swing, was fading away. Swing Session quickly became THE band of choice for serious swing lovers and dancers, and they rocketed to the top of everybody's favorite band list. They deserve it. They play genuine swing of the 1940s, the kind of danceable, high-octane music performed by small groups during the big band era. This, their first album, is a great place to start in discovering this exciting group of superb musicians playing the most infectiously joyous music you will find anywhere.

But this isn't just an album for swing dancers! Anyone who likes jazz and the roots of modern music, or just plain clean, old-fashioned peppy sounds, will absolutely adore this album. Please check it out-it just might turn you into a swing dancer as well.

The back of the album advertises "EVERY CUT A GEM!" and for once, the advertising isn't kidding. These are twenty tracks of which everything is great. Many of the numbers are classics of the era, and the band fully does them justice: the instrumental "Spooks Holiday," the Louis Prima classic "5 months, 2 weeks, 2 days," a lesser-known but absolutely knock-out Prima piece called "Be Mine," the sexy but very danceable Louis Jordan tune, "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby," and the hard dancing instrumental "Drivin' & Jivin'."

But the band also writes some great original tunes that perfectly fit the style of the classics: "Hardtack" (based on the noir movie "Out of the Past"), "Jump Little David" (named after the bass player), and one the real big gems of the album, "Last Night," a slow, fun, and soulful tale of an actual nightclub fire. Lead singer Pops really does a number of this one1

The musicians all just stun with their abilities. Leader singer Peter "Pops" Walsh is a wonderful personality in his vocals (and he's a swell guy in person as well). He's backed up with drums, piano, trumpet, sax, and bass-and man, can Jeff "Erv" Ervin wail on the saxophone! These guys swing hard, and they love what they do, and you'll love what they do as well.

(As a side note: the band recently changed their name to "Stompy Jones" for the release of their third album. Don't worry, though: it's still the exact same line-up of players playing the same wonderful 1940s swing!)

If you love this-and you will-buy their equally great "Whispering Grass" and "Stompy Jones" albums. Look out for them in your town, especially if you live in California (they are a San Francisco-based outfit). They are party to see live! (And remember, they are now called "Stompy Jones.") SWING ON!

5 out of 5 stars Lindy Hopper's Delight!.......2001-10-04

There's a great range of tempos here, with nothing incredibly fast. It's all danceable. And you can't help but move! Their authentic sound really rocks! My favorite songs aren't their covers, but their originals, like Baby's Boogie Woogie and Out West, written by their own Little David. Scotty's boogie woogie piano reminds me of the old greats, like Pete Johnson. I love going to see this band; whether I end up just hanging out and drinking with Pops & Scotty, or dancing the night away, they always make the evening memorable. I can't wait for their next album, Whispering Grass!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME BAND.......2001-07-31

Easily my favorite swing band playing today. "Pops" has a great stage presence and infectuous playfulness that while this CD does not fully convey, is nonetheless in evidence in abundance. These medium tempo swing tunes are sure to get your feet moving whether on the dance floor or under the office desk. 5,6,7&8!

5 out of 5 stars The essential modern swing band.......2000-06-27

I'm a fanatical swing dancer and Little David and the Swing Session are my favorite dance band. This single album has twenty tracks, each of which is indispensable for dancers. They make my feet move! I used to have the pleasure of following the Swing Session from venue to venue in San Francisco, and since I've moved to the East Coast this CD fills the space they left in my life. Most of these tunes are quite faithful renditions of tunes by someone named Louis, and most are quite hoppin' fast, though there are a few slower numbers. You need this CD!

      Album Description

Improbable as it may sound, the sextet was one of the largest groups that Art Tatum ever worked with; it may even be the largest for Tatum, who worked for most of his life with no accompaniment at all, towards the end showed a marked preference for a trio, but rarely ever appeared as one of six. The reasons are easy enough to surmise. Tatum, being a colossus, needed as much room as possible in which to operate, and the more other soloists there were to take solo time and to demand of Tatum the duties of an accompanist, the more Tatum must have felt like a thoroughbred on a light rein. For Tatum, when he worked with other musicians, would sometimes temper his genius with a little tact, for the sake of the cohesion of the performance as well as in deference to the egos of the other musicians involved. Now the listener never cared anything for all this. Of the supporting musicians, the one with the longest list of battle honors was the founder of the vibes. Lionel Hampton, a musician who, having worked with both Armstrong and Tatum without exhibiting even a flicker of inhibition or loss of nerve, may therefore be said to have done and seen everything there was to do and see. Harry Edison, who plays trumpet with Tatum, spent many years in the Basie band, where he perfected a personal manner which consists of paring down the content of every solo to the practical minimum. The rhythm players include Barney Kessel, who was one of the very first musicians to become associated with "Jazz at the Philharmonic", and the Granz recording labels. The drummer, Buddy Rich, is in his own way as remarkable a technical wizard as Tatum himself, although on the Tatum sides the demand for wizardry was limited. Instead Rich laid down a strong, solid beat, assisted by the bass playing of Red Callender. Essential Jazz Classics. 2007.
