Squeezing Out Sparks was not only Parker's finest moment, but it still stands up today as one of rock's best albums. When it was first released in 1979, Arista simultaneously issued Live Sparks, a collection of live radiocasts that featured the same 10 songs in the same order plus the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" and Parker's kiss-off to his former label, "Mercury Poisoning." The latter package was made available only to radio stations and critics, but it was a riveting live record worth all of the $40 it commanded on the collectors' market. Now Arista has reissued the 10 studio tracks and the dozen live tracks on an invaluable single CD. Included are two versions each of rock's best pro-choice abortion song ("You Can't Be Too Strong") and best Hiroshima song ("Discovering Japan"). --Geoffrey Himes

A classic.......2007-05-14
This is an album that came close to changing my life! In 1978 I first heard this while browsing for vinyl at the local college record store. Parker and the Rumour were playing, introducing me to what we called "new wave" at the time. Trouser Press used to debate whether Elvis Costello or Graham Parker was the best band of this new era of rock and roll, giving the edge to Parker because of the back-up band! History may have chosen differently, but this is an album that can still bring a tingle to your spine! If you have not heard it, you owe it to yourself to give it a listen. If you like it, then you need to find a copy of "Live--Alone in America" to hear the most stripped down, soulful version of someone who completely "gets it" even if his talent is not singing, but interpreting.
Still sounds great.......2007-01-10
I am very happy with this CD. Love Protection and Local Girls (which played on my first date with my husband).
a forgotten album that needs a wider audience.......2006-08-29
Poor Graham Parker. His timing was bad and this excellent album never got it's full acclaim. This was hist first album that attracted attention in the U.S. he was very inaccurately grouped in with the New Wave movement. When that petered out, he seemingly fell by the wayside along with all the other skinny tie groups. The problem was this was really a singer/songwriter/rocker. When he asserted his true identity, people viewed him as a former new waver shifting styles. I saw him open for a number of rock groups and he was booed off the stage. It is a shame b/c Graham Parker has a vast, rich body of work where he should have a better reputation as an accomplished artist. "squeezing out the sparks" ,I think, is his best work.
The singing is out front, the lyrics have meaning and sometimes, are effectively seething, and he is backed by a crack band. The guitar player employs the same tone throughout all of the songs which I like since the guitar becomes a vry recognizeable voice. The drumming is very simplistic and tribal and definitely enhances the songs. The production results in a pronounced spacing between the instruments. The musicianship is very good.
This is a great album so every song is excellent. There is no filler, no weak tune, no song is superior to the other.
I personally like "Local Girls" b/c it was released as a single in Chicago where I was first introduced to the album. "Discoverying Japan" "Can't be too Strong" "Nobody Loves You" and "Love gets you Twisted" are my preferences.
If this would have been release 3 years pre or post -punk and new wave, it would have reached a wider audience.
You will never know about this excellent album from radio airplay or publicity. This will always be a word of mouth artist. Its a shame b/c he was like a Brittish Springsteen/Mellencamp
You Can't Be Too Strong.......2006-05-20
To XraySpex: the song "You Can't Be Too Strong" is not anti-abortion. Listen to it again. If you knew anything at all about Graham Parker, you would know he is the furthest thing from a religious fundamendalist that you can get. The song doesn't take a stand one way or the other. It's simply *about* an abortion, and is likely a true story.
That aside, this is a legendary album that everyone should own. And with the Live Sparks promo added as a bonus, it's indispensible.
Live Sparks from cyberspace! How an email friend & I met Graham Parker.......2006-03-21
I bought the vinyl LP back went in came out in the late '70s (yep, I was still in the 8th. grade!) and to this day still drag it out and play it from front to end. I guess I can say that was one of the best things I ever bought with my allowance $$, LOL. Although it was a shame Graham Parker never received as much attention in the US compared to other artists who were of the "angry young men" school of rock, Squeezing Out Sparks was a great calling card to introduce his music to other people--so much so that at times I felt I could have collected some royalties myself for turning others on to Graham Parker! Fast forwarding to 1999: I got wired to the Net at home then quickly fell into a message board community of old school punk and new wave affectionados. The first person I was emailing on a daily basis was a fellow GP fan from Germany who noticed all the posts I wrote about Squeezing Out Sparks, also in his 30's at the time, who needed someone to help him better understand what most of the album's lyrics meant due to his limited English. One particular track I patiently explained to him on more than one occasion was "You can't Be Too Strong", that poignant anti-abortion song; I guess the angry, yet emotionally empty feelings Graham Parker used in his that song sang with much passion really confused him along with most of the phrasing that trying to graspe such a powerful song as a non-English speaker, and non British English to boot, was really overwhelming for him. We kept in touch for several months and at one point after finding Graham Parker's own website, my German friend went to look at it himself, sent an email to GP which Graham had personally answered!! =) My friend mentioned how Graham was pleased to have been emailed by a German fan, then GP being a big football player himself, the two of them talked about football teams then Graham had made a standing offer to play a little football with my fellow German GP fan should my friend ever visit England. Having heard him tell me about this conversation with our favorite singer almost make *me* feel like I had met "the man himself", too! Sometimes the Internet can be a wonderful thing! =)

A Barely Dated Hybrid.......2005-10-24
4+, that is. Many call this classic rock 'n' roll. If they're comparing it with Boston, Dave Matthews, or other such over-blowns/watered-downs, I see their point. However, I hear a delightful hybrid, the sort of merging more likely when most of the sources are faraway (as with the Beatles and black "girl groups," producing something derivative while different). Elvis Presley or Johnny Burnette & the Rock 'n' Roll trio, who in their day had never heard of Otis Redding, could still kick the Rumour's ass at bare-boned ROCK AND ROLL. But who cares? This is great stuff. Back when it came out, and my friends & I were 20-something, it revealed a mature yet fresh approach to what would later come to be called Alternative Rock, Rock - let's not start that whole argument again. While stages were being dominated by a bunch of boys, or boyish personas(the Ramones, Sex Pistols, et al) Parker & his cohorts, like distorted reincarnations of Frank Sinatra or Louis Jourdan, jumped up and said, "Wait a minute - we can play - and we have experience!" - very sexy. My girlfriends & I consistently helped pack sweaty dance floors at Parker's U.S. tours. Think we'd have trouble relating to the viewpoint of "Hotel Chambermaid"? The song, which is written & played in a wonderfully circular/resolving fashion, is so convincingly joyful as to transcend such considerations. Along with "Turned Up Too Late," "Back Door Love," "That's What They All Say," & a handful from Howlin' Wind & Stick to Me, it's a timeless reminder of the innocence, hope & raw oomph that lived before AIDS & a host of other plagues drained some of the roll out of rock. As to why Parker didn't make it "bigger," he was able to ride the New Wave's coattails but his aforementioned maturity (& lack of standout physical appeal - he was already going bald, for instance) placed the band in a relatively unmarketable nether zone. Elvis Costello was no handsomer but got lumped in with the New Wave and benefited from Stiff's dead-on marketing. Dave Edmunds had been around longer but was cuter and able to go in a more Pop direction. It didn't help that Parker was sometimes confused with Costello. Years later, I think Parker's music has aged better. And I'm certainly less sick of it - one of the benefits of lack of extended airplay?
A Classic Remastered........2005-09-06
GP's "Heat Treatment" along with "Howling Wind" are considered 2 of the greatest records in the history of rock. Anyone unfamiliar with GP should begin here. These are the first 2 albums of a 30 year recording career that should have him in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Yet, his name is almost never mentioned at voting time. The sound on these remasters is very good as well.
This is awesome..........2005-05-12
This sounds a lot like The Clash's London Calling. Ahead of it's time in way of it's eclecticism mixed with punk rock.
Incredible.......2004-08-22
There is simply no way to describe the raw emotion and passion that GP has in his music. Has there ever been so large a talent that has gone unrecognized in his lifetime ? Maybe Van Gogh is the only one. GP and the Rumour (the tightest back-up band this side of E-Street) rock out like their lives are on the line, with total commitment and a beat that won't quit. If you like Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen or Elvis Costello you'll love this. An Incredible CD.

Soul + Punk = Greatness.......2006-11-14
This is my favourite GP album. Although it does not have the rock & roll grandeur of "Squeezing Out Sparks", this album clearly ranks as one of the best albums of the 1970's.
Don't underrate this gem!.......2006-05-02
Graham Parker's "Stick to Me" had a troublesome birthing process, with the entire album having to be re-recorded at little expense after the original production fell victim to disintegrating tape stock. Nick Lowe came in at the last moment and produced a quick and dirty version of an album that from all accounts was much more ambitious, arrangement and production-wise.
I always liked this album but it wasn't until seeing half or slightly over half performed live with the Figgs a few years ago that I think I "got it".
"I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down" is a perfect cover for Graham, he would have written it eventually had he not been beaten to the punch.
The vinyl originally came with stickers of the cover.
Move over Chuck Berry and tell Keith Richards the news.......2003-12-08
While "Stick to Me" is generally considered weaker than Parker's previous 2 albums, it may be more fun than either. STM finds Parker and the Rumour switching between bar band mode and the intensity of the earlier LPs. As far as songs go, there are enough good ones here for STM to hold its own. The standouts from a songwriter perspective are "Thunder and Rain," "Stick to Me" and "Watch the Moon Come Down." "The Raid" and "New York Shuffle" are great songs, too, but show the band's more playful, Chuck Berry side.
In the late 70s Parker and the Rumour were one of the best white R&B bands going, right up there with the Asbury Jukes, and nearly the equal of the 60s Stones. Parker would later slip a little too far into new wavish keyboards and sensitive singer-songwriter territory, but "Stick to Me" represents the hard R&B that personify GP's early efforts. Highly recommended!

A Strong Cd .......2007-02-21
The Rumour is a strong release from Olivia, the first single the catchy 'The Rumour' is a fun song written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin, this cd has great production and solid vocals from Olivia, if you're building a Olivia collection make sure this one is included.
Olivia is the bomb.......2006-11-10
The best grouping of new songs on one disc. Great melodies. Great vocals, and songs with meaning. Too bad it didn't sell well in the US. I spent years trying to find it and then.........the internet. I never knew finding great old music could be so easy. Olivia is timeless and her music always sounds great and relavent.
Not Just Olivia's Best.......2006-08-31
This is not just Olivia's best cd. This is one of the best albums of all time. It has some of everything put to great music: contemporary social messages. history, mothering, relationship dicsord and just fun. I would put this album above Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and Prince's "Purple Rain", both of which had songs that you fast forwarded through. This album is a must listen from beginning to end.
Many voices have entertained me over the years, but few were truly beautiful. Olivia has a beautiful voice, wrapped in a gorgeous, classy package. She is the consumate performer. I wish I could purchase the accompanying dvd-"Olivia Down Under". I cannot find it anywhere. Why America did not reawaken to Olivia and classify this as the greatest comback in a generation bewilders me. This album should have birthed at least four #1's, giving Olivia a total of nine.
I will always love Oliva Newton-John. I will always love great music, which is why I will always love this cd.
Olivia: One Of The Best.......2006-01-28
Once Olivia Newton-John became well established in American pop music in the mid-70's, she entered the exclusive circle of the top female singers of our time, right up there with Linda Ronstadt, Diana Ross, Bette Midler and Dionne Warwick. Once you reach these heights, a new album doesn't prompt the question "Is she a good singer?" but rather "Is the material good, and was the vision for the recording successfully realized?" For me, the answer for this collection is "Yes". "The Rumour" is like a slightly subdued sequel to 1985's "Soul Kiss". Both have top-notch 80's pop-rock production, both continue Olivia's sexy image, and both were largely ignored by the American public. There is a new direction, however, on "The Rumour". Sex is still a force, but now it is blended with themes of fidelity, lasting relationships and the future of our planet. In "Get Out", Olivia sends a message of self-reliance, just in case the relationship doesn't work out. "Let's Talk About Tomorrow" manages to sound like both a rock and disco recording, and the lyrics are about environmental concerns. "Tutta La Vita" reminds me of Sheena Easton's "Strut" musically, but the discussion is on the philosophy of life and love. Two other songs about love differ in subject matter and in expression: "Car Games" comes to a slow boil and stays there, while "Walk Through Fire" reaches the peaks of a power ballad. Olivia's versatile voice is excellent, as always, and she continues to seem totally involved in the songs she is singing - there is no cool detachment. So, I find this album to be another example of a very good recording that just doesn't sell, simply because the artist has passed his or her prime period of commercial appeal. Oh, and did I mention that IT ROCKS??

Customer Reviews:
This guy is incredible!.......2006-09-13
He was the angry young man before Costello even started. With Brinsley Scwartz (a Pub rock band that Nick Lowe use to be in) doing the music and Graham Parker singing made a perfect combination. Most of the critics back then named it one of the best albums of the decade and if you hear it you'll know why. I do like his first two albums Heat Treatment and Howlin' Wind better myself since they have more of a gritty soulful swing like Van Morrison unlike this album is rock but what he does better on this album is the songwriting he is at his peak on this album.
girls.... want to understand male anger?.......2006-06-12
we can get , like really sensitive, passionate and vulnerable too...
Plus we're smarter than we look and act...
This album is a masterpiece, lyrically, and with the backing band, the Rumor at its Zenith, with incredible bass/drums/lead riffs .... *****
"Its not the knife in the heart that tears you apart ....
Its just the tought of someone sticking it in ...."

Sparks: timeless classic.......2001-12-15
I bought this record back in 1979, when I was a freshman at Colorado State University. I needed to get the remastered version on CD. I did...
And by the way kids, this is MUSIC!
So you youngsters out there will thank me for weeks if you buy this classic from the punk era. As far as you could tell, this could have been recorded last week. It's timeless.
The two bonus tracks were cut during the original sessions, but were left off of the original album. Buried for 22 years these two songs are as great sounding as anything on the record.
