Chess is a musical that sounds like it shouldn't work but instead succeeds surprisingly well. This is the original concept album that was recorded before the musical was staged in London. Chess is the story of a love triangle told against the backdrop of an international chess tournament during the height of the cold war. The composers are Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (the Bs in ABBA) and the lyrics are by Tim Rice, who supplied the words for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, as well as Disney's Aladdin (with Howard Ashman), The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast. The six-member cast does a beautiful job with the songs, which are a combination of ballads, rock, and operatic choruses. Murray Head's version of "One Night in Bangkok" became a surprise hit in the mid-'80s and it still turns up on the turntables in dance clubs around the world. --Michael SimmonsCustomer Reviews:
This should never have worked at all.......2007-06-18
While "Chess" may be a document of an era that no longer exists, there's a lot more going on than the surface metaphor. It holds up very well indeed. When it aims for humor, it generally succeeds, and likewise when it aims to devastate. What more can you ask for?
A GREAT AND OFTEN OVERLOOKED MUSICAL FROM THE 80-IS.......2007-03-04
This concept album is the main reason why the show has so many ardent fans until this day. Tim Rice wanted to write the show with the main plot revolving around chess for years and after his long time partner Andrew Lloyd Webber remained uninterested, he found the new collaborators in Ulvaeus and Andersson. The subject matter follows two international chess players in a championship, a Russian (Tommy Körberg) and an American (Murray Head) and a woman called Florence (Elaine Paige) who is a manager to the American but falls in love with the Russian. The story also draws a parallel between the game of chess and the cold war/real life situations.
This concept album was recorded in 1984, two years before the original London production took place. As the authors noted in the accompanying booklet, it was a work in progress and thusly the story is not quite readable here from the musical numbers alone. Despite that fact (which is amended by the synopsis included in the booklet), this album remains a winner. The score (played here by the London Symphonic Orchestra) itself makes an intriguing bland of the famous ABBA sound, the classical; the rock and the pop enhanced by the orchestral solo passages and the strong choral parts. The lush orchestrations add an epic touch to it and on the whole it is melodic and hummable, packed with great tunes. Some of the songs achieved huge success outside the musical: `I know him so well', a duet between Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson, held the number one spot on the UK singles charts for 4 weeks in February 1985 and won Ivor Novello Award as the Best Selling Single; Murray Head's `One night in Bangkok' became one of the biggest dance hits of its time, often heard today. Some other notable tunes include `The Anthem' (Russian's deliberation on his homeland); the soaring rock songs `Where I want to be' and `Pity the child' (in the former, the Russian reflects upon his life under the spotlight; in the latter, the American ponders about his own unhappy childhood) or the gentle `Heaven help my heart' (in which Florence weighs up her relationship with the Russian).
A special reference must be made to Tim Rice's excellent lyrics. With `Chess' he managed to keep up to the high standards he set himself in `Jesus Christ Superstar' and Evita'. Again in this case he shows he is a lyrical wizard, with his familiar cynical touch. `The story of chess', in which he gives a history of the game in a couple of crafty verses, is a pure masterpiece. The same can be said of the song `I know him so well', where the two women reexamine their relationship with the same man. As a whole, `Chess' owes a lot of its appeal to Tim Rice's written word.
The cast on this album ranks the high standard of the material. The principal parts (sung by Elaine Paige, Tommy Körberg and Murray Head) are delivered in a strong and impeccable fashion.
This 2-disc edition comes with a booklet containing a note from the authors, a text about chess, a full synopsis and a libretto, together with the photos of the principal singers.
Anyone interested in the modern musical theatre should find `Chess' to be a great score with great lyrics, which should be enough to satisfy any aficionado.
Chess.......2007-01-15
One of my favorites!.......2007-01-12
Concepts get better with practice.......2006-11-27
With most Broadway musicals, the musical numbers tell the basic story of the show. If you listen to the recordings of Phantom, Mama Mia, Beauty and the Beast, you can discern the basic storyline of the show. Listening to this particular recording of Chess, though, will leave you wondering "What was that?" The Broadway arrival of Chess saw a much needed reworking of the storyline and arrangement of the musical numbers. This recording seems too much like a mish-mash of songs that don't really relate to each other.
For musical fanatics (like myself), I say "yes, you should have this recording in your collection", if only to understand how much work went into the show before it opened on Broadway.
If you are only buying the album because of "One Night In Bangkok", purchase the Broadway recording instead; you'll be much happier with the performance by Phillip Casnoff rather than Murray Head.

Opening at the tail end of 1948, Kiss Me, Kate became an instant classic--and amazingly didn't receive a full-scale revival until 1999. All the more reason to revel in its original version. With its cunning play-within-a-play premise (a musical update of The Taming of the Shrew reverberates in backstage feuds), brilliant mix of high and low comedy, and of course some of Cole Porter's better-known songs--"So in Love," "I Hate Men," Too Darn Hot," "Always True to You (In My Fashion)"--Kiss Me, Kate remains a funny, zesty hall of mirrors. Hard as you may try to find a fly in the ointment, there's no fault with the cast either--Patricia Morison, for instance, is a perfectly petulant Lilli Vanessi. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
The best and maybe the last CD of this great musical........2006-02-20
Sony's transfer engineers used state-of-the-art restoration software to remove the roughness and surface noise from the originals, but (thankfully) they resisted the urge to tart-up the sound with artificial reverb, faux stereo, and thundering bass. This is by far the best-sounding CD of this ever released, and it may be the last.
The age of music ownership in America could be drawing to a close. Five years from now, this music may only be available by download, you might only be "borrowing" it, and it probably won't come with the the authentic cover art or the 26-page booklet.
(See also the original broadway CD of Out of This World.)
Beautiful remastering of historic original cast recording.......2004-05-24
The sound on this newly remastered CD is crisp and clear and easily surpasses all previous issues. Sony even uses the original artwork from the very first LP release.
The performances remain as fresh as ever. Alfred Drake was Broadway's top leading man and sounds just glorious. Pat Morrison had less of a career but sounds just perfect as Lilli. Lisa Kirk is wonderful as Lois, and Harold Lang makes the most of his few moments on the record as her boyfriend, Bill. In an unusual move these peopel reunited 10 years later to re-record the score for Capitol in true stereo. They still sound great on that recording (on CD as part of the Broadway Angel series) but the performances are fresher on this recording made just 2 weeks after KIS ME KATE had opened on Broadway to rave reviews.
The CD booklet has good info about the show, though curiously, no synopsis. There are, however, a half dozen pictures of the original production. This edition featureds longer takes of "We Open in Venice", "I Hate Men" and "Too Darn Hot" though the total extra music adds but a minute to the album's running time. A bonus track of the Overture dates from a 1958 stereo recording by Lehman Engle.
KISS ME KATE was the first Tony Award winner for Best Musical (1949). The 1999 revival won a Tony for Best Revival.
the peerless original cast.......2004-03-04
Very rarely has the score been bettered than the original 1949 cast album, reissued here on the Columbia Broadway Masterworks label. Patricia Morison plays Lilli, with Alfred Drake (OKLAHOMA!, KISMET, GIGI) as Fred, the feuding, ego-ridden leads. Lisa Kirk (ALLEGRO, MACK AND MABEL) is the sexy young starlet Lois, with Harold Lang (PAL JOEY) as her caddish boyfriend Bill.
KISS ME KATE opened at the New Century Theatre on Broadway in 1949, making history in its run of over 1000 performances. Patricia Morison is perfectly-suited to the role of Lilli. She offers a glowing rendition of "So in Love", whilst her duet with Alfred Drake in the tongue-in-cheek "Wunderbar" is sublime. Lisa Kirk gets three of the big showstoppers ("Why Can't You Behave?", "Tom Dick or Harry" and "Always True to You in My Fashion"), and nails each and every one. Harold Lang was a better dancer than he ever was as a singer, but is quite good on this disc.
A must-own.
Who Put The Shake In Shakespeare?.......2001-04-11
The story is set in a Baltimore theatre where a divorced couple, Fred Graham and Lilli Vannessi, are in the two leading roles of a musical version of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. Fred currently dates a colorful light-heart named Lois Lane, while Lilli is about to head off to get maried in the south. Lois, by the way, will 'always be true' to her boyfriend, the gambling player Bill Calhoun. The story takes off from there!
The show originaly opened on Broadway in 1948. It's timelessness has still not worn off after so many years. The classic script by Bela and Sam Spewack, and the best music of Cole Porter, we cannot fail! The show has been performed since then in many many countries, and has been performed in many languages! It has only recently been revived on Broadway.
Kiss Me Kate has become a staple of classic Broadway, and this is the cast that will not be outdone. Patricia Morrison is a perfect, operatic, Lilli Vanesi. She is strong, yet thoughtful. Her voice fills the CD with a lively 'Wunderbar' and the raging 'I Hate Men.' Alfred Drake is a manly and appealing Fred Graham who will have you laughing out loud! His 'Where Is the Live...?' is yet to be surpassed. Harold Lang is a sexy, and hypnotic Bill Calhoun. He takes the role for himself, and his 'Bianca' is done to the point of perfection! His voice is misty and self-confident, and has the qualities all Bill Calhoun's should. And of course, there will be no one as good as Lisa Kirk for the role of Lois Lane! Her tongue-in-cheek performance on this CD is flawless! She is teasing, sympathetic, funny, and has the right voice to win her part! I can't imagine anyone who can do what she has done with 'Alway True to You' and 'Why Can't You Behave.' The classic character songs are very nice! The balladic, and melodic 'So In Love' will ring in your head. 'We Open In Venice' will make you dance! And 'Brush Up Your Shakespeare'(performed with much humor by Jack Diamond and Harry Clark) will give you a laugh the next time you read 'Romeo.' You won't be disapointed!
The nostalgic quality of the 40's is alive and well in this recording. Columbia has done a great job restoring the work, and the scratching that were a part of the original releases. The sound quality is crisp and clear, and the music sounds wonderful! The magic hasn't worn out yet!
There have been a few more recordings of the work, including a complete London recording, and the new Broadway revival cast. None can do as well as the original recording, however. In the revival recordng, however, they come close. Brian Stokes Mitchell has the voice for Fred, but runs through his lines a bit fast, and without much enthusiasm. And the orchestrations for the new recording are a bit overdone, and they sound more like PBS's Jazz, than Broadway.
Altogether, this is great recording. I was very pleased with my buy, and hope that you will add it to your collection right away! It's time to Brush Up Your Shakespeare!

THE LAST GUNNE RIDES AGAIN.......2006-10-09
worth . . . how could he know it's the greatest attraction on Earth?"
--- Opening lyrics, SO...WHERE IS THE SHOW?
This is the key to the Soul of a Rocker....in this case, a man named Jay Ferguson, captain of the ship-of-savants known as Jo Jo Gunne. One of the 1970s' greatest musical enigmas, Jo Jo Gunne fell --- or, more accurately "jumped ship" --- out of Spirit, America's greatest, most creative musical aggregate to date.
Pioneers of jazz-rock fusion years before Miles Davis' BITCHES BREW, Spirit's hard-luck story should be the backbone of a "VH-1: Behind The Music" segment that mirrors the travails described in Al Kooper's biobook, "Backstage Passes And Backstabbing Bastards" to which most Pop acts are privvy.
The sins bordered on criminal, in the case of Spirit...a band that should have been hailed within the pantheon of Rock popularity above any of their contemporaties, including their LA neighbors, The Doors. Spirit was just too good, in that sense.
And their commercial success came, literally, moments after their two "blonde bombshells" group members (songwriter/front man Ferguson and bassist/anchor Mark Andes) departed for a single-focused, more definable, seemingly more lucrative career point, forming Jo Jo Gunne in late 1971. (Spirit's 4th album, TWELVE DREAMS OF DR SARDONICUS, did not climb the charts with sufficient dispatch for the immensely talented duo. Tragically, it was the last missed-it-by-that-much for a band that, e.g., declined the opportunity to open for their long-time friend Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. But, of course, who knew???)
Completely eschewing their esoteric roots, the Gunne's 1972 breakout, self-titled debut album still ranks among the greatest straight-ahead Rock albums of all time.
Twisting away 180 degrees from the over-produced wetness of SARDONICUS, JO JO GUNNE jumped feet first into the uncharted Mojave Desert of bare-bones, Southern-California rock-and-roll. (Fellow Asylum Records artists The Eagles, whose premiere album flew off the shelves in 1972, explored that same desert from the Country side.)
Stepping out from the dark genius that was Spirit, the Gunne melded Ferguson's previously unheard, barrel-house piano style and trademark sinewy, smokey-dark melody lines with his strange-and-wonderful lyrical paintings, all-the-while nailed to the floor by Andes' unmistakable bottoms. (Note: EVERY bass player should learn the importance of and the elements of Andes' unmistakable style, not only in cementing a band's overall sound through its disciplined lows, but also in its addition of counterpoint, color and movement to even the simplest moments.)
Later that same discography, WHERE'S THE SHOW if not floated, at least drifted their sound into a direction that could have saved the remainder of the decade from Disco. As it stands, this was the band's swan song. More's the pity.
The title opener, as always, was the dependable, Fergusonian killer single. More subtle, yet much more anthemic than most of the band's previous material and pre-sages Jay's later bent, especially the immense single, "Shakedown Cruise," from his REAL LIFE AIN'T THAT WAY solo LP.
Having seen the band on its final tour that largely pushed this, their farewell set, I was thoroughly impressed by the live execution of WHERE'S THE SHOW?'s beefy, expressive rock lines. The great and pleasant surprise was guitarist John Staehle's work: hot and fluid solos that were dramatically different in technique and technology from founding guitarist Matt Andes' strokes, Staehle redeemed himself from the abyss that was Spirit's extremely forgettable follow-up to TWELVE DREAMS OF DR SARDONICUS, called simply FEEDBACK. (In his, and his bassist brother Al's defense, they never had a chance. Especially since they had neither any appreciable songwriting talent nor Jazz chops.)
Be that as it may, SO...WHERE IS THE SHOW? demonstrated a newer, fresher, much more muscular and directed sound. Also, there is a LOT less clutter and over-production than on the band's two previous outings, BITE DOWN HARD (the weakest of the Gunne's four albums) and JUMPIN' THE GUNNE, which was infused with gobs of Ferguson's inimitable sense-of-humor, largely absent from BITE.
"Where Is The Show?" drafts the sentiments of the road (a shaft that Ferguson had mined previously, on JO JO GUNNE's "99 Days" and BITE DOWN HARD's "60 Minutes To Go") with a positive flush, dodging the complaints and getting down to the benefits and motivations of the ridiculous lifestyle that is rock-and-roll. "I'm Your Shoe" is a comedic show-stopper. (No one but Ferguson, other than perhaps Walt Disney, Chuck Jones or Dr. Seuss, could breathe life into an inanimate object with such panache.)
"Single Man" describes the honest sentiments of a man of integrity, pulled away from home and hearth by the necessary vagaries of, again, the rock-and-roll lifestyle. "Do you think I could have made it as a single man?" asks Ferguson, who forgives, "so let the foolish man gamble, crazy man ramble...all I can handle is some peace of mind...I'm a homebound rover, honey, think it over. Baby, we're doin' fine."
"Big Busted Bombshell From Bermuda" is another hilarious Fergusonian travelogue. (If Jay ever does a compilation of all his works, there are lots of creatures and habitats to be visited: "Animal Zoo," "Thunder Island," "Topanga Windows," "Babylon," "To The Island," "At The Spa," and many, many more. It should be called "MISTER JAY'S GREAT ESCAPES.")
Now, so many years later, the real question is: "SO . . . where's the GUNNE?"
Fans and true believers may not have long to wait: the original (and only valid) line-up of the band, including the incomparable Mark Andes on bass, reunited in 2003 to record a new album, titled THE BIG CHAIN.
Look for it~jk
