5 out of 5 stars The best weather!.......2006-08-30

With Red Garland it doesn't matter if it's raining outside, the weather is always good. At least if it's raining it's better. You can stay at home listening to Red's albums which are always exceptional. This is one of the best. Red here swings with Paul Chambers and Arthur Taylor, and what can I say, they play the perfect jazz trio music. Do you know what does it mean perfection? Each tune is mirably chosen and interpreted by Red's trio as what it really is. I mean, Red does not only play over the chord changes, he plays the tune even if he is improvising he tells the story of the tune. And believe me, it makes a world of difference! Here this fantastic ability that not every jazz player even among the big guys possess, finds its perfect expression being this one a collection about weather conditions. And you have to hear for yourself the stories Red's trio is able to tell you. Stories about the rain, about summer and winter, stories of spring and autumn, stories of storms. The idea of playing weather songs is a winner in the hands of musicians like these because they literally paint the scenaries of those weathers .... This album is simply another exceptional work of art from one of the most perfect pianist in the history of Jazz music. Red Garland.

4 out of 5 stars one of the best piano albums around.......2001-09-03

red garland came to notoriety as the pianist for miles davis' first great quintet of the 50s featuring john coltrane. some critics of the day dismissed mr. garland as a glorified lounge pianist, but this album destroys such naysaying. mr. garland could flat out swing. he may not have pushed the envelope like thelonious monk or bud powell, but he had an encyclopedic knowledge of the american songbook and could find the groove in most any tune-- check out "winter wonderland." here he takes the conceit of working through a seasonal songbook and seems to have a lot of fun doing so.you will, too, as you discover one of the great overlooked talents of the jazz piano.

5 out of 5 stars Swingin' Through The Seasons With Red Garland's Trio.......2000-08-23

One of the great jazz pianists. Especially the late 50's early 60's recordings. All Kinds Of Weather features a soulful rendition of Summertime and swings through Winter Wonderland. The whole album is great! Highly recommended, along with his other recordings.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09

Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

    Product Description

The sophmore album from female foursome Vervein. Their sound is like the aural equivalent of vicodin and red wine at the same time. A moody, atmospheric foursome with ethereal vocals, interwoven guitars and cello set to driving drums. Likened to Mazzy Star, the Breeders, American Analog Set, and Throwing Muses.

Vaguely pleasant, but lacking hooks, substancial chord progressions, and melodies. It's not drone music it's pop-rock but it just kinda drones. It's not giving me much to get into. Reminds me of early Curve, which is a change from their last album which was somewhat more organic but equally patchy, although it had a couple truly great songs and this album seems to be lacking any. I don't suppose this band will ever make an album that reaches the potential they hinted at during those best moments.

      Album Description

A welcome re-release of this legendary Goth album which reached #3 in the Indie charts in 1985. Emerging alongside other goth bands such as Sisters Of Mercy, The Mission and The Cult, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry stood out as a different breed due to the directness of their lyrics. Formed in Leeds in 1982 they plowed a lone furrow with their dark and often manic rhythms - almost assaulting the audience with their force. The Indie hit singles 'Take It All', 'He's Read', 'This Today', 'Monkeys On Juice' and 'Hollow Eyes' are all included as well as 10 bonus tracks 'Beating My Head', 'I'm Still Waiting', 'Take It All', 'Happy' (Single Version), 'He's Read See The Fire', 'Monkey's On Juice', 'Push', 'Silence', 'Hollow Eyes' (12" Version) and 'Russia'. Cherry Red. 2005.

I don't know what kind of system the previous reviewer was listening on, but with all the pops and crackles, it is obvious that EVERY track is mastered from vinyl. Cherry Red has been re-issuing Red Rhino material for some time now using vinyl as their source (Pulp, Skeletal Family, etc). RLYL fans have had to endure many sub standard re-issues and rehashes of their early material. The shame of it is that their are CD versions of 'smashed hits' and 'paint your wagon' that came out back in the day that could've been used to improve this and the '82-87 singles collection'. The bonus tracks appear to be different vinyl versions than those used on '82-87' with 'take it all' in particular sounding pretty bad. It's missing the rerecording of 'beating my head' from the 'this today' ep, which is far superior to the 1st 7" version used here (this track is also missing from '82-87'. The insides are pretty good replicating the lyric sheet on the inner sleeve of the LP, and yet another eulogy from another fan. The music is brutal. RLYL were the best band to come out of goth ground zero (leeds/bradford area)in the 1980's, and were to say the least, uncompromising. More like the Doors on speed, than anything else. This and 'paint your wagon' should be in your record collection, however you'll gain nothing by buying this on CD, buy the original LP instead. One last gripe the gravestone marker on the front cover ruins the sleeve.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar-Drenched Gloom and Doom .......2005-11-24

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry's TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER was one of the strongest UK rock debut albums of the mid-1980's. Consisting of eight short, crushing songs, the LP was a throbbing mass of guitar-drenched gloom and doom that seemed at the time to herald a new and audacious band fully capable of going on to do bigger and better things. While the Lorries would in fact release several subsequent singles over the years that were (arguably) better than any of the individual tracks on WEATHER, they never again would release an album so coherent and consistently powerful; it definitely stands as their ultimate statement and serves as the best starting point for anyone remotely interested in the band.

Previously available only on a murky sounding "two-fer" Compact Disc, with the Lorries' second album, PAINT YOUR WAGON, tacked on, this new reissue has been completely remastered and appends several bonus tracks, including the first ever CD appearance of "Russia", one of the band's most bizarre b-sides. The release is part of Anagram's Goth Collector's Series, although its certainly arguable to a considerable extent as to whether the band should really be bound within the extremely rigid perimeters that define the "gothic rock" genre. They were more adventurous than many of the run-of-the-mill goths, often embracing acid rock and danceable rhythms along the way. Vocalist Chris Reed's bleak lyrics tended to be a little more straightforward and intelligent than most of his competitors, at least on this first album. Regardless of how you choose to classify the music, TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER is undeniably an explosive and searing document of its time, and still a powerful experience after all these years.

First off, you're in for a bonus if you buy this cd: in addition to Stormy Weather, the cd also includes Thelonious Monster's previous album, Next Saturday Afternoon, the great leap forward that cemented their position in Southern California's punk pantheon.

And if that isn't enough, then perhaps a few words about TM's vocalist, Bob Forrest. For all of the uniqueness of his voice, there's more to him than just the sound he brings to TM. Lyrically speaking, this is a guy who's willing to wear his flaws on his sleeve; a guy who explores his shortcomings with such sincerity it's hard not to like him.
Listen to almost any of their songs and one quickly realizes how cathartic the act of singing and composing is for Forrest.

Then there's the music. TM is a band that floats from one genre to the next with little or no difficulty. Whether they're playing punk, folk, jazz, acoustic, or country, there isn't a genre they are unfamiliar with, nor is there a style they haven't mastered.

My brother first got me into this group and I was fortunate enough to see them at a tiny hollowed out club in Long Beach in 1988. They have tremendous energy live. See them if you can.
